Multiple OS in same task sequence

Hi,
Scenario:
I have random different computer configurations where any of the following OS can be installed: win 7 HP, Pro, Ult or win 8.1 and 8.1 Pro.
All drivers (apart from lan and USB) are installed as application bundles (grouped by motherboard)
At the moment I have 5 task sequences for 5 different OS, but if any changes has to be made - I have to update all of them. Recent one - I would like to add GPU detection and automatically install correct nvidia or AMD drivers.
Is there any chance to have one task sequence or two (win 7 and win 8.1) where I can select correct OS to be installed. or maybe have something like split task sequence.

Hi
Yes you could combine ypur Wim images to one, here is a guide:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/cameronk/archive/2010/04/29/consolidating-your-task-sequence-part-1-how-to-combine-wim-images-into-one.aspx
And here is a TechNet thread how you can choice Wim index in the deployment wizard:

  • How to use two different boot images in the same task sequence

I have a need to use Two boot images in the same task sequence. The reason is I'm deploying ZTI to McAfee encrypted devices which I have already done with McAfee v6 Encryption successfully.
Here's where my problem comes in. We are about to deploy McAfee v7 which means we will have a mix of v6 and v7 in our environment. I must have two special Boot images one with v6 drivers and one with v7 drivers in order for my process to work. I don't see
a way right now to assign more than one boot image to a task sequence. Is there any way to do this?
If I can't do that then I will have to create two task sequences and target collections based on the Endpoint Encryption version to deploy to.
If anyone has suggestions it would be much appreciated. Thank you

Have you tested copying those files to %windir%\system32\drivers during the WinPE session (just enable commandline support to your boot image) to see if they need to be in there before the OS start? Test that and if they don't need to be there during the
    boot up of WinPE then:
Create two packages (v6 and v7)
"Run command line", use the package created earlier and just use "copy /Y .\*.* %windir%\system32\drivers" ...again, this should be run according to your needs, variable or some other check like I said

  • Having issues with patches that require multiple reboots in a task sequence?

Are you guys having issues doing a build and capture or deployment, while including the recent patches ?
It looks like another patch is requiring multiple reboots which breaks the task sequence...
Long story short... the last time I created a .Wim file was in June (with ZTIWindowsUpdate) - it included all the patches as of June 2014. This image has been deployed since then with no problem. All the other monthly patches (07/08/09/10/11/12/01) can be
installed successfully through the deployment task sequence with no problem.
Then last week, I decided to create a new .Wim file to include all the patches as of January 2015. In my build and capture step, it exits because one of the updates requires multiple reboot. I checked on the following website and it has not been updated
    since October 22nd : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2894518
Do any of you experiences issues with a WSUS that requires multiple reboot recently ?
    Thanks!

As mentioned, the MDT offline updates task will do it. Add it to your build and capture and it will do the work for you using the updates in an update package that you've previously created. Alternatively, use a stand-alone instance of MDT to create your
image (using a build and capture TS of course) -- this can then use a stand-alone instance of WSUS to install the updates into your image which you then import into ConfigMgr.

  • Reasons for not deploying applications using Task Sequence

    Hi guys!
Could you provide me with some reasons why I shouldn't be using Task Sequences to deploy all of my applications? I like the idea that I can deploy multiple applications and packages at the same time, as well as being able to perform other tasks in the same
Task Sequence if needed. I also really like the progress bar window which shows end user the company and name of application being installed.
The SCCM Unleashed 2012 book mentions that while this is an available option it's not a good practice because "applications are meant to be state-based". Would someone be able to elaborate on that statement?
Is using Task Sequences for deploying applications generally a bad practice that I should try to avoid?

    Hi,
here is a description for state based:
Depending on the deployment purpose you have specified in the deployment type of an application, System Center 2012 Configuration Manager periodically checks that the state of the application is the same as its purpose. For example, if an
application’s deployment type is specified as Required, Configuration Manager reinstalls the application if it has been removed. Only one deployment type can be created per application and collection pair.
If you deploy your applications by using task sequence you bypass this feature. You will install the application. but after this initial installation there will be no further check for the app to be still present on device.
You can use task sequences, but should be aware of the features you bypass in this scenario.
    Regards

some other model but in this Lenove M82 (3306-G1F) and M82 (M3395-AB4) we have the same error. But on other Lenovo model the same task work very fine. Why?

    Hi,
    I agree with Damon.
Might be the ConfigMgr Driver Injector will help you.
This tool will allow you to capture installed drivers on your workstations and then will automatically import them in ConfigMgr 2012.

  • Failed to Run Task Sequence (Error 0x80070032)

    Hello folks
We just setup the productive SCCM environment and successfully staged many clients. But with one we have some trouble.
I have added the Client with the Hostname and MAC address into SCCM
Added the Client into the Collection where the Task Sequence for staging is applied
Made a boot image on CD-ROM and booted up the client
He can successfully connect to the SCCM Server and also get the right ask Sequence
Bevor starting downloading the Vista OS WIM, the following Error occure:
    Failed to Run Task Sequence
An error occured while starting the task sequence (0x80070032).
For more information, please contact ....
I used the Boot CD-ROM successfully on other clients without any problem.
The same Task Sequence was working perfect on other clients
All Clients are HP DC7800 SFF Desktops
BIOS Settings are default by all the Clients
Have tested the same Client on the Test SCCM Environment and got the same problem.
Deleted the Client and re-added it into the SCCM Server
Tried to use different network cable on different location
Client successfully get a DHCP IP address
We have all done so far as I have the knowledge. Any help would kindly be appreachate.
    Kind regards
    Stefan

    Hi folks
As seen in another thread (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2592075&SiteID=17) that the local smsts.log file located in x:\windows\temp\smstslog\ will help to analyse whats happen in the background, I have seen the following line in the Log:
The active system partition on a MBR system must be NTFS
    and
Failed to prepare the system partition for staging.
The request is not supported. (Error: 80070032; Source: Windows)
    and
    Failed to stage WinPE. Code(0x80070032)
So, I did the steps informed in the other thread to press F8 durcing the Error and used the following in the DOS Box:
    Diskpart
    Select Disk 0
    Clean
After that steps, the Bootprocess worked perfect. It seams that the Disk was partitioned not that good, that WinPE could handle it.
Hope this helps other for analysing.
    Cheers
    Stefan

The attached log file is related to a client push, I'm not sure how that is related to your problem. When you're having problems with the client installation during a task sequence deployment, please check the smsts log file and, if available, the ccmsetup
log file (these log files should be available on the client itself).

  • Install CS6 Applications via SCCM Task Sequence

    Hi
We have an SCCM 2012 R2 infrastructure on our network, and want to deploy Adobe CS6 applications using Windows Installer Packages created with Adobe Application Manager Enterprise Edition 3.1
We created individual packages for each application (for flexibility) following the instructions provided at this address: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/creativesuite/pdfs/AdobeApplication ManagerEnterpriseEditionDeploy…
When we go to install the packages via an SCCM Task Sequence, the following occurs:
    1     The application is installed
2     The application is not installed
We have followed the instructions provided by Adobe for the deployment, and cannot get any consistency with the installers. For example, when we run the task sequence, the following applications will be installed:
    1     Dreamweaver
    2     Fireworks
    3     Flash Professional
    4     Illustrator
    5     InDesign
    6     Photoshop
When we run the same task sequence again, the following applications are installed:
    1     Dreamweaver
    2     Fireworks
    3     Illustrator
    4     Photoshop
The task sequence first images the computer with Windows 7, and reboots the computer between each application being installed
I have also attempted packaging all the applications together, in a Design and Web Premium style package, with the same, unfortunate results
Please, can you help with this?

The error means RPC server unavailable. TS needs to invoke Execution Manager by RPC. This may be caused by the issue of RPC starting. I suggest you check the RPC service availability first. Another try is to add a restart computer step before installing
SQL. If still no avail, add a Delay "cmd.exe /c timeout /t 900".
Regarding the connecting network share issue, seems the network services has not been initializing or ready. Another possibility is the DHCP time out. Check the Event log and this may give you some clues of why the network is not ready or DHCP cannot get
IP address. Network Monitor can also be used to monitor the IP helper when the Client try to send DHCP request after reboot.

  • Task Sequence Fails after Software Updates Install Step - Lenovo X240

    Hi All.
I'm having a strange issue trying to run an OSD on Lenovo X240 machines.
After the Software Update step, it reboots as expected, then exits the task sequence and sends you to the windows logon screen.
Review the SMSTS.log, it appears the reason is:
Found network adapter "Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260" with IP Address 0.0.0.0.
    TSMBootstrap 24/07/2014 15:07:10
    1824 (0x0720)
Found network adapter "Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I218-LM" with IP Address 0.0.0.0.
    TSMBootstrap 24/07/2014 15:07:10
    1824 (0x0720)
    Full log file:
    SMSTS.log
If I remove the Software Updates step, the task sequence completes without any problems.
Don't think it is a driver error, as above, every other step completes without issue. Other models use the same task sequence (including software updates step) without any problems.
    Any ideas? I'm completely stuck.
    Thanks!

Looks like I am deploying KB2965788 which requires two restarts.
    Thanks all for your help.
P.S. - I periodically update the base image with a build & capture to include the latest updates, so in the times between this I deploy the software updates as part of the task sequence.
I've found the offline servicing to be very flaky, have attempted to use it many times and found it either a) doesn't apply the updates to the image b) corrupts the image.

  • Does "Distribute content" on the right click menu for a OSD Task sequence also REDISTRIBUTE packages?

I have a task sequence with quite a few packages that have already been distributed. But that same task sequence has far more that have never been distributed.
When you Right click a SCCM OSD Task sequence and select "Distribute Content", does it also redistribute content that's already been distributed to existing DP's, or just the packages that have never been distributed?

    Hi,
You can only select DP's that don't have the Packages required by the Task Seqeunce so no you cannot use it to update the DP's

  • Dell Driver Packages breaks OSD Task Sequences?

I'm completely stumped here... I had an OSD Task Sequence that was working perfectly. Then I imported some Dell Driver Packages with the Dell Client Integration Pack and suddenly, OSD doesn't work anymore.. I made no changes to the Task Sequence itself (steps
    are listed below).
The weird thing is, when the OSD is actually running, the progress bar goes through all of the steps and the Monitoring space on the deployment shows each step completing successfully, but every step after "Apply Operating System" doesn't actually
take effect.  When rebooted, I find the computer has not joined the domain, has not applied any drivers, has not installed the SCCM client, didn't install any of the applications, and didn't install the updates.  It's like the task sequence just
stopped actually writing to the hard drive and just pretended to go through the motions.
Does anyone have any idea what could have happened?  This same task sequence used to work just fine.  Could just having driver packages available on the DPs break the OSD even though they're not even referenced in the task sequence?

  • Installing "Applications" during the task sequence and installation enforcement

    Hello,
Kind of a weird question here, so it seems like I'm seeing that if you install an application on a system during its OSD task sequence, then you later manually uninstall that application, that SCCM considers that system now out of compliance?
And then reinstalls the application as indicated in AppEnforce.log?  Is this true?  If so, how do you get around this behavior?  I guess I thought that this application compliance only took effect when you actually deploy an application to a
system, through an actual deployment.  I didn't realize that it would enforce compliance even if an application was installed during a task sequence.  So if you have hundreds of systems that were imaged with the same task sequence and you have
a small handful of machines that can't have application X on it (so you want to uninstall it), which was installed via the task sequence, how do you disable this compliance enforcement and disable its automatic reinstall?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sorry for the delayed response, thank you both for your input.  To answer both your questions, no these workstations do not have any required deployments for this application directed at them.  I have confirmed that, however, they do have
the OSD task sequence deployment (that contains this application) constantly "available" to them (via only "media and PXE") as this makes it very easy for our technicians to reimage any machine whenever they need to (love that feature
    by the way).
I can only assume that because they still have this task sequence deployment pointed at them is why they continue to attempt to reinstall this application when ConfigMgr finds that it's not installed anymore.  In fact it does it at the same day/time
each week, which I believe is the same day/time of the week that the machines were imaged.  I must have the compliance part of the clients configuration to check every 7 days for stuff like this?  Anyway, that's my conclusion for now.
Since even Wally Mead felt that this must be an actual required deployment outside of the task sequence I'm really curious to see if anyone else sees this behavior.  It would be fairly simple to attempt to recreate, image a machine with a task sequence
that has "application" installs included, where the deployment for it is just "available" and keep the deployment "available" after the machine is reimaged.  Then after that, uninstall one of the apps that was installed
during the task sequence via an "application" and then see if it reinstalls automatically, it may wait a while (may 7 days by default?).  You can see the evidence of our application reinstalling itself in the "AppEnforce.log".
Is it even remotely possible that this is a new "feature" or behavior of ConfigMgr 2012 and "Applications"?

  • Drivers - Can you do both "Apply Driver Package" and "Auto Apply Device Drivers - PNP" in the same Task Seqeunce ?

    Hi All,
It has been mentioned to be that it is possible to have both "Apply Driver Package" and "Auto Apply Device Drivers - PNP' " specified in the same task sequence, with some kind of logic specified that if the Apply Driver Package step does
not run due to the hardware wmi query not being valid then the 'Apply Device Drivers -PNP' will run instead. Vice-versa - if the "Apply Driver Package" wmi query is correct and driver package applied then the 'Auto Apply Device Drivers -PNP'
will not run and be skipped.
    Is this possible ?
I can't seem to find any documentation or reference indication this can be done. :-(
    Many thanks everyone..

To add some info here, note that the end result of both tasks is the same. Neither actually *installs* drivers in any way. Both simply copy the drivers to the target system and inject them into the image being deployed where they are then available to Windows
Setup (which runs during the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task) to install based upon the Windows Setup standard PNP detection.
Thus, using both task types, depending upon what is in the driver packages and what is detected by the OSD PNP detection (which differs slightly from the OS PNP which is far more complex and has been described as a "black art"), potentially injects
more drivers into the image potentially making more drivers available to Windows Setup. This could of course increase your deployment time.
I've thought about this approach before and it is technically valid, but I've never had to resort to it. I've always just made sure that the drivers packages are complete. If you're trying to address the scenario of hardware without a explicit driver package,
I could see it working but I could also see it causing problems because drivers are weird. In general, I would recommend always testing new hardware and anything not accounted for is considered unsupported.

I am seeing this with my customer with a WIndows Server 2008 R2 client. Its in a workgroup, install the client manually (CCMSETUP run locally). I approve the client and add it to a collection with a mandatory TS (non-OSD). It just hangs at "Installing..."
and I get the same errors above in TSAgent.log.
If I uninstall/reinstall the client some time fixes this.  Any ideas what would cause its?

  • Deploy OS task sequence fails when deploying to multiple computers

    Hi gang,
I'm running into an issue when imaging multiple computers with MDT 2012. Let me give some background info.
I have installed Windows 7 64 bit on a laptop in audit mode, made my configurations, sysprepped the machine, and captured a .wim using WDS (captured to an external hard drive). I then imported this .wim into MDT, created a Standard Client Task Sequence to deploy
the image, and successfully deployed it to a machine.
My problem comes up when I initiate this task sequence on multiple computers simultaneously. If I put 6 computers side-by-side and run the task sequence at the same time, only a couple machines will actually succeed. The rest fail with the following:
    FAILURE ( 5624 ): 2: Run ImageX: /apply "\\CAAPPWN40\DeploymentShare$\Operating Systems\T731 (Final) Windows 7 64 bit May 2013\T731 (Final) Windows 7 64 bit May 2013.wim"

If I restart the computer, boot back into PXE, and run the task sequence again, this time on it's own (as opposed to 6 computers at once) it works fine.
    Can anyone help?

I just rebooted the server and tried again, same result.
I keep getting a "Body text cannot contain links or images until we are able to verify your account" error when posting a hyperlink. I've had my technet account since October... weird.
