Music via MIDI ... anyone?

I've created a number of MIDI projects in Java. These are fun
music education games that kids really like to play. I want to
rewrite them in Flash or Flex (obviously because Java’s Swing
interface is pretty bland, and because Flash, Flex and ActionScript
are so adept at creating elegant interfaces.)
Unfortunately there are no MIDI methods in ActionScript!
I’ve got some new Flex projects that would benefit from
MIDI too, particularly this one:

Anyone else interested in seeing MIDI support in ActionScript
(AIR, Flex, Flash?)
If so, PLEASE cast your vote here in an ongoing discussion

... and you can create an individual post/request here:

care to browse. However, if you wish to vote or add a comment you
need to log in ... and your Adobe forum account won't work there.
To vote or comment you need to create an account for that
area. It just takes a minute, and it's free. (You know the routine:
user name, password, reenter password, email address ... and that's
about it.)
If you have ANY interest in MIDI, please vote. When Adobe
implements MIDI, the result will be HUGE! Read what people are

What people are saying here about MIDI and ActionScript is
profound:
https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-123
If you have ANY desire to see MIDI support in
ActionScript/Flash/Flex
please voice your opinion in the discussion at the link
above.
As expressed by James Plamondon, MIDI itself may be a key
element in cementing Flash Player's dominant role in the pending
RIA 'format war.' And I believe he is correct. Indeed MIDI will
benefit those who want to efficiently embed sound tracks and
interactive sound, but it's impact will goes far beyond that!
Here's what James Plamondon had to say
I was *shocked* to discover that MIDI was not already
supported in Flex/Flash/AIR as of Feb 2009. It is such a natural
fit with Flash's low-bandwidth, high-interactivity objectives. I'm
developing music education courseware, targeting AIR, and it had
not occurred to me that Flex/Flash/AIR would NOT support MIDI.
Although products such as Chirp (
http://www.tanageraudioworks.com/Products/Chirp)
demonstrate that it is possible to work around this deficiency, it
is the purpose of a platform such as AIR to provide a single
standard alternative to such work-arounds.
I understand that Adobe must prioritize its efforts, and get
the most bang for its limited number of
programmer/tester/documenter hours.
Please allow me to place this in strategic terms. In the RIA
standards battle, either Adobe's AIR or Microsoft's Silverlight
will eventually emerge with nearly 100% market share, condemning
the other to a slow-growing niche. Adobe's primary advantage in
this battle is the high degree of interactivity it gets from the
tiny footprint of its Flash Player and SWF files. As has been
emphasized above, MIDI plays to this strength. It fits beautifully
with Adobe's overall strategy. (It would fit even better if Adobe
were to acquire a sound and music creation tool firm, to flesh out
the audio side of its "creative suite," but that's a whole
different conversation.) Silverlight is weak in this area, and --
given Microsoft's historic and current weakness in music and audio
-- this weakness is very unlikely to be addressed any time soon.
Therefore, by supporting MIDI in Flash/Flex/AIR, Adobe can
pit its strength against Microsoft's weakness, which is the essence
of strategy.
For whatever that's worth.
James Plamondon
(formerly Microsoft's leading strategist in technology
evangelism, according to documents filed in the public record of a
number of anti-trust cases)
Eloquently expressed James!
Your vote for for MIDI is a vote for the health and longevity
of Flash Player, and Adobe may fail to implement MIDI unless it
hears some significant clamoring. "Yes we can!"
The lack of MIDI support in Flash's "audio toolbox" is
tantamount to Flash offering graphics support without vectors.
Music and audio are so incredible important to multimedia
presentations! The company that best implements MIDI in RIAs will
likely reign. Music and audio saved Apple's butt a number of years
ago; they'll surely make a huge difference for Adobe today and in
the future.
You may not need MIDI for music education RIAs, or for
interactive projects that would benefit from a wide a palette of
sound without the overhead assoicated with MP3 audio ... but
imagine adding a 4 minute soundtrack to your animation for a mere
16K, presently, at Flash's highest MP3 compression, that would cost
you about 4MB!

  • Samsung Fascinate, problems with playing music via USB port on car stereo

Before the update, I could play the music files on my Fascinate via the USB port on my Kenwood stereo, and control basic functions such as skip, pause etc.  Now, my stereo does not recognize the device, and cannot read the files.  I went to local Verizon store where a sales rep tried to connect it in here new Kia Soul and it didn't recognize the device either. It will play via the AUX jack, but I lose player control and the phone does not charge via the AUX cable.  She did a hard reset which did not resolve the problem.  We tried one of the other employee's Fascinate in my car, which did not work either.
So, after hoping to be able to stream music via Pandora, Jango etc thru the USB port after the update, now it seems its primary function is for charging.
Also, the ALL SHARE function, which I used to get the music on my phone originally, does not work now.
Anyone else have this issue with music player and USB connection?

txgopher- I have personally never used my Fascinate to listen to music via USB via stereo however, I can see why it would be frustrating for you to no longer be able to do so when it was never an issue prior to the update.
It sounds as though you and the store rep already did some troubleshooting by trying to duplicate the problem with another car, stereo and even doing the final troubleshooting step which is a master reset.
Since you have done all of the necessary troubleshooting steps to no avail, it most definitely appears as though the software update has interfered with that USB connection in some way.
What I have done is forwarded the information you have provided to Samsung in order for them to look into this concern as well as come up with a way to get this resolved.
Please stay tuned because as soon as we hear back from Samsung we will be sure to update this forum with the results/findings.

hello forum. can anyone pls tell me how to make the ipod on my iphone choose music from my genres. in itunes i can select music via genres but when i sync to my iphone the genre button always displays that there is no music in that particular genre even though all my genres are listed. i have also ticked the box in itunes advanced tabs to let itunes organise the music folder.

  • Can I sync a Mac and a PC via MIDI using Logic? How would that be?

I use my Mac running Logic Pro as my primary music making environment. However, I would like to use my PC as a MIDI instrument which would be controlled by and sync'ed to Logic via MIDI.
    Is that possible?
How can I set my PC (I can run Cubase SX, Live 5, Reason or V-Stack) to behave as a slave to the Logic Pro running on my mac - just as if it were... say... a roland synth? I would like my PC to slave to tempo, transport controls, etc. Can I do that at all?

Well, you should have a dedicated sync MIDI cable. Assign Logic to transmit MTC. Tell Cubase to chase it.
    Song settings>Synchronization>MIDI
that is where you can tell Logic to transmit MTC. When routing back to Logic you shuld not expect significant latency and there are ways to offset it. The easiest would probably tell Cubase to run a little ahead of the clock. (Offset)
So there is the Logic settings panel Cubase has one similar, for chasing. If you use a dedicated audio interface and transfer audio digitally from PC to Mac then you would want to have then synced via word clock. I would put Logic as the master here again.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I have the same 3G-Bluetooth issue and can't offer a solution to that at present but I'm wondering what you want to do with the connection ?
If it's to Browse the iPhone (as if it was a disc or flash drive) then there's a handy utility called iPhone Explorer that allows you to do this.

  • Can my wife use her iPad to get access to my music via iTunes Match and still retain her iTunes store user id?

my wife has a new iPad and iPad Store user ID.  I have a seperate iTunes store user id and subscribe to iTunes Match.  All my music is now in the "cloud".  Can my wife get access to my music via match and still retain her iTunes store user id?
The only way I seem to be able to get Match to work on her iPad is if she uses both my iCloud user ID and my iStore user ID.

Essentially I have the same problem.  My spouse and I have a shared music collection on 1 computer.  We've used different id's for our various devices for years.  Currently we both use iPad minis iPhones and AppleTV.  I have iTunes Match on my account.  Recently we haven't been able to access songs bought or downloaded by the other id.  iTunes says that the computer is associated with another id.  In fact we have 1 song that didn't finish downloading when an album was bought on my spouses account while the rest of the album is there.  My suspicion is that I will need to go down to a shared id when we buy our new MacBook Pro for Boxing Day.  But, if we do that are we able to have separate calendars and passbooks and other features?  Is there another option?  I'm willing to stop using iTunes Match if necessary.

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • Playing Shared Music Via Front Row

I've just got an IMAC Intel core 2 Duo and I'm having trouble playing shared music via Front Row. I have five accounts on my machine and can play any shared music via itunes but cannot access them via Front Row...........any ideas?

If you had the option of storing your media on a separate hard drive, I guess I'd have to ask for a few more details about your current arrangement before making any more recommendations. For example, why do you have five different user accounts, all logged in, all playing iTunes and all sharing songs at the same time? Could you not consolidate all of the media onto the Mac mini (or an external drive plugged into the Mac mini) and have the Mac mini doing all the iTunes sharing? So, when another user wants to listen to some music, they can play it from the Mac mini, rather than the other way around?

Within music Library can anyone please explain why after I select the option to sort 'Album by Artist' a number of tracks are being treated as separate albums?  How can I fix this?  I have tried to manually correct by 'drag and drop' individual tracks but that doesn't work.  My music library includes a number of repeat album artwork images simply because not all tracks are being listed under the one album making my library more difficult to use than it should.  Any advise would be appreciated.

  • Syncing Tascam DA78 via midi to Logic

    Hi,
I am trying to sync a Tascam DA78 to my Logic 8 studio via midi. I can get the Tascam to sync in "park" but my Logic transport won't control the Tascam DA78.The tascam will chase to wherever I am in my logic project, but I am trying to bounce in sync and need to start the DA78 from Logic I believe.
I must be missing something...is there something somewhere that says it's ok for Logic transport to control the DA78?
    Thanks.
    -Tim

    still stumped!
So...I got the tape deck icon in the top position. It lets me arm a track on the Tascam (which I don't need to do...I need to playback only)
I can record onto that tape deck icon track..sort of. It records a blank track (labled MMC recording) and stops at bar 5 consistently. And the logic playhead bar does not move during this process.
some other settings I'm not sure of:
    >Midi cable into Tascam DA78 from midi sport USB interface. Do I need any other midi cables going?
    >Tascam will now kick on from transport as long as I have Sync Mode internal and auto enable external sync checked. But having this checked disables Logic transport from starting Logic. I can control the Tascam only with auto enable checked. When I uncheck it Logic will then respond as normal but the Tascam will only locate to the playhead and not chase Logic in sync which is what I am after....I think. Unless that tapedeck icon track somehow records without moving the playhead in Logic. As I said...it records blank even with the correct analog inputs routed and stops at 5 bars.
    thats it for now.
    Thanks (again)
    -Tim

    would it sound like crap?
it would sound exactly like what it sounds like now with speakers or headphones.
    would it be in mono?
with a single 1/4" input, yes.

i can't really make any sense from this.
    you'd need a MIDI interface:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Interfaces.html
(Click "MIDI Only" in the righthand sidebar)
you could then record your drums into a MIDI track in GB. GB offers no MIDI-OUT.
