My 30 inch display is crapping out, help!

I have a 2-week old apple 30 inch display. It just woke up from energy save mode and a vertical portion of the screen (about 1/4 of the monitor) displays all black colors as reds. I restarted, experimented with display prefs, and eventually zapped the PRAM, all to no avail. Has anyone heard of this or have any advice? Also, in the moment after restarting when the monitor comes to life and displays all black before the gray apple logo screen comes up, that 1/4 portion of the screen is entirely red, if that helps...

Could be the video card.
Anyway it's only two weeks old, you can call Apple Support to start your repair cycle. Say it's a warranty call if necessary.
I would advise picking up AppleCare if you don't have it already.

  • 15-inch display flickers/goes out on startup/wakeup

I replaced my screen just yesterday, as old screen was cracked, and for the first day the new screen worked like a charm. However, this afternoon it flickered and died as I was playing a game. I know that it is the back light because I can still see my desktop if I use a flashlight. The backlight shines for a moment when I first startup/wakeup my MBP, but then flickers and dies. Any ideas as to what this might be? I've tried resetting the PRAM multiple times and that hasn't worked. I ran a hardware test and the code: 4sns/1/40000000: 'TAOP' came up. I'm thinking I should send the new screen back for a replacement, but if there's anything else I can do it would be great to know.

    vanshaygoenka,
which model MacBook Pro do you have, and which version of OS X is installed on it?
Try reïnstalling the OS again, and then log in. Open System Information, and select ▼ Hardware → Storage on the left-hand side of its window. What information is shown for Physical Drive → S.M.A.R.T. Status on the right-hand side of its window?

  • "Macbook Pro 17-inch" OR "15-inch 2.0Ghz + 23-inch display" ?

I'm ready to upgrade my iMac G4 and would like to change to a Macbook Pro. The decision i'm working on making is whether to invest in the 17-inch MBP or go for the 15-inch + 23-inch display. Both options cost about the same.
The combination of laptop and display creates the flexibility of working on a large desktop display at home and bringing the laptop with me when I travel.
The 17-inch brings the higher performance. Perhaps the 17-inch display is plenty of screen space for working at home (I've been working with a 17-inch screen on my G4 iMac for several years)
I would describe my use of the system as "home use" -> internet, email, iTunes, photo library/editing/I'm thinking about upgrading from iPhoto to Photoshop, video storage/I've done very little video editing but may start with Final Cut Express,
I'd very much appreciate any comments and advice from anyone who can make suggestions about which of these systems would be best for my needs.
Some additional questions about the MBP + Cinema Display combination:
Is it a good idea to run the MacBook Pro 15-inch connected to a 23-inch Apple display? I realize the Apple displays are targeted at Mac Pro users. Would i get the full benefit of the display performance if I'm driving it with a Macbook Pro? Is it convenient to "dock" and "un-dock" the MBP from the display? Besides the Bookendz product is there any expectation that Apple will produce a docking station to connect the MBPs to the displays?

If you plan on using it mainly at home, I would get the 15" and external display. That's what I done. It's been working out great. You don't need a docking station either. Everything is easy to attach and unattach,

  • I have a 5th gen that won't display any video out

I have a 5th gen that won't display any video out. I've tried 2 different splitter cables out of the earphone jack. I've tried plugging the RCA cables into different colors on the tv. Thought it was just a problem with the cables until tonight when I got a Sonic Impact V55. Video won't display on it either. I have the TV setting to ask. After it asks and I say yes, I get a picture of an Ipod cable connector and a message saying: TV OUT
    ENABLED Please Connect Video Accessory.
This message happens on both splitter cables and using the dock connection on the V55. I've restored, reset, nothing has helped.
I did see a couple of posts regarding the V55 and whether the 5th gen would work on it. Does anyone have a v55 that the ipods working with? Heck the box says it works with Ipod 5th gen.

    Playercoca wrote:

It goes trough the place where you put youre dock conector in (on the bottom)
Yes it does, on the 5th generation (pre-Classic) models, the video does indeed feed out the headphone jack (as well as out the dock connector on the bottom).

  • Brightness sensor malfunction on 27 inch display?

Does anyone know where the brightness sensor is on the 27 inch display? I have the display set to adjust the brightness but there doesn't seem to be any change at all when I turn the lights out in the room. I wonder if I'm getting "feedback" into the sensor from objects around the display.

I thought the light sensor was firmware controlled, not software. If so, installing software wouldn't have an affect. You may have the brightness turned up fairly high for both bright and dark levels. Try this:
    1. Turn out the lights in the room.
    2. Adjust the brightness manually until it's at the level you like.
    3. Turn on the lights in the room.
    Does the brightness change?

  • Dual 30-inch displays

I have a MacPro with an ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card with a DVI port and a mini Display port. I have an Apple 30-inch display now and have acces to another 30-inch Apple display. Can I use the current card to run both displays at once? I got a mini display port to Dual-link DVI adapter and the mini port did not work for either display, but both displays work on the DVI port. Apple is sending me a new adapter, but my question is, can I display one 30-inch monitor thru the DVI AND one monitor thru the mini port together? Apple does not know. The ATI site is not helpful. If not, what card should I use. Many thanks.

Yes, mDP can drive a 30-inch. What you already tried should have worked and I'm not sure why it didn't. At least you have another adapter coming, but the problem may lie elsewhere besides a defective adapter.
Write back with further details if the second adapter also fails to work.

  • Does it support a 30-inch Display?

Does the video card in the newer mac minis support the Apple 30-inch display?
    Thanks.

The mini will give a useable display on the 30" from its single-link DVI port. But the resolution will be 1280 x 800, which is one-fourth of what the 30" is capable of. So as mystuffs already pointed out, it's not very compatible.

  • EasyTAG crapping out on modifying existing tags

I have had this weird problem for some time, but since it only popped up with a few music files I didn't bother. Now I am cleaning out my collection and making the tags look more uniform (yes I know, I'm neurotic) and it happens with like every two files. I first thought it was due to the SSHFS share I was running EasyTAG on, but that can't be it - the exact same files make it crap out when I try to tag them locally. I'm running a 32 bit Arch install, synced with current, in perfect working order (at least I hope ).
Also noteworthy (I think) is the fact I can edit those same files perfectly in Thunar (with the media plugin). So it looks definitely like an EasyTAG issue to me, but I'd like to have confirmation (and pointers) before I go bugging upstream .
Anyway, I ran EasyTAG from a console, and I got this beauty:

I checked as I promised, but it more looks like I'm mistaken. Easytag works, at least now, as it should. I haven't tested it with all formats yet, but this far I don't get any strange output.
Sorry for not being of any real help.

No, you can't upgrade the GPU on a MaBook Pro - it's soldered onto the logic board.
    Sorry,

I was just at the Genius Bar in Chicago and they said, don't worry about it.  It just floats out there, however, I can not recover my messages on a flash drive. I need to go back to my old computer which I don't have with me.  My messages were in folders for a lawsuit.  It is going to take an incredible amount of work for me to, you have no Idea.  We are talking thousands of pages!  I the defendent will have them during discovery so I am not so worried.  However, I can not bring them to him on a Flashdrive when I meet with him without an extraordinary amount of presssure on my part.  THis is not just some little email issue. This is suing EXPEDIA and Tripadviosr.com

  • New 20 inch display not working on my G4

Help, My 20 inch display is not working on my G4 455.
When I turn on the system, it lights up and the spinny clock thing shows up but then it goes black.
The monitor works great with my G4 powerbook.
My original set up was with two 17 inch displays.

Check the compatibility list in this article and see if your computer is compatible with the monitor. If so, try instructions 5 through 7 of the external displays procedure on this page; instructions 1 through 4 are only applicable if the monitor doesn't work at all on that computer.

  • Does the 24 inch display come with everything?

I am going to be getting a new macbook pro soon, and I was wondering if the new 24 inch display comes with all of the cables needed to hook it up to the laptop, or do i have to by them separately?

Yes it does. It has one cable out of the back of the display which splits into 3 at the other end (USB, DisplayPort and Power). It's sweet.

Without a bootable backup/clone or a Time Machine backup of your previous Snow Leopard installation or a saved copy of Lion's install app, you'll have to upgrade your Leopard volume to Snow Leopard (10.6.6+) so you can waste another hour or more DLing the Lion thing again.
