Planb77..... Thank you for confirming that..... I guess the battery is shot.  I do have a later version of ipod and am very happy with it, however I was trying to ressurect this one for use on my motorcycle.
How do I replace the battery.... is it easy to get the ipod apart w/o destroying it.... I would love to delve inside any way and replace the battery.
Can you or anyone help here and point me in the right direction to replace?
Thanks for the help planb77

  • Has My iPod Died? (3rd gen)iPod with Clickwheel B&W

Hoping someone can help, I can't turn on my iPod even when I toggle the hold switch and press & hold menu and select.
I plug it into my pc and the pc does not acknowledge it, nor does iTunes so I am unable to restore(I have already downloaded the very latest version of iTunes).
If I try and charge it sometimes but not always the battery charge icon will appear but it does not move as it should when charging.
Is it time I faced facts and bought a new iPod which I can ill afford? Feel so lost without my beloved iPod.
Thanks in advance for any helpful tips.

If it has a "clickwheel" (instead of a touch scrollwheel with four separate round touch buttons), it is a 4th gen iPod, not 3rd gen.
Shut down (power off) the computer and restart it. Try a different USB port. If possible, try a different docking cable.

  • 3rd Gen iPod with current iTunes

I write to inquire about how to best reorganize this 3rd generation iPod to accommodate podcast material in folders other than those for music.  The included image shows that the organization options are limited as the "consolidate files" option is the only option.  Additionally, I would want to have separate folders for each podcast personality. This post refers to a Windows 7 64bit notebook.

See my article on Grouping tracks into albums. Although iTunes should update the iPod following any changes in iTunes occassionally I find I have to physically remove the tracks, then replace them for the change to ripple through correctly.

  • 3rd Gen iPod, with a twist

I have a 40G iPod and it wants to load in iTunes, and I can see it on the desktop, but when I attempt to do a restore and then update, the iPod updater software tells me that there isn't an iPod connected. This is the case on my powerbook and my wifes iBook. I am almost at the point where I will remove itunes and reinstall from the CD that accomponied the iPod.

Follow these instructions. When you restore from backup like the instructions says the iPod will also be updated.
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
    To update
A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later. With OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1
A 3G to 5.1.1  Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
Some users who think they have a 3G iPod really have a 2G. A 2G can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • What is this? (From 4th Gen iPod Touch dock connector)

I recently bought a 5th Gen iPod Touch which is great. My 4th gen broke a year ago and wouldn't charge. This morning I decided I'd see what's wrong with it. I shone my flashlight in the dock connector and I realised this thing wasn't connected to anything and was kind of just... sitting there. What is it?

    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

  • HT5457 why dont you update the 3rd gen ipod touch to iOS 6?

I have a 3rd gen ipod touch and don't have the money to get a newer ipod so why cant you make iOS 6 available for 3rd gen ipod touches?

    1) You are not talking to Apple here.  We are users just like you.
    2) The 3rd gen iPod does not have the hardware to be able to use iOS 6
    3) As of now, almost all available apps will also run on iOS 5.

  • Synching a 3rd Gen iPod?

I have a 3rd gen iPod (dock-to-firewire cable).  Can I use the dock-to-usb cable from my newer iPod classic (or the one from my iPad) to sync my 3rd gen iPod with my new computer (with no firewire port)?  I know I can't charge my 3rd gen via usb -- I'm just worried about synching for now.

The 3rd gen iPod (the one with buttons that glow orange) will not receive power over USB (only FireWire), so it will not work reliably if connected using only USB.  The solution Apple provided for Windows PC users, who usually did not have a FireWire port, was a special cable.
This cable has one dock connector, but BOTH a USB connector and a FireWire connector at the other end.  You connect the USB connector to your computer, and (at the same time) the FireWire is connected to the white square FireWire power adapter that came with that iPod model.  In this way, the USB connection provided the data transfer while the FireWire connection supplied the power.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47700
I did a search on eBay, on "firewire usb docking cable," and there were some listings for third-party versions of this cable.  Apple no longer sells the "official" part.

  • Is a 3rd gen ipod supposed to charge from computer?

I just bought a ipod off ebay, it is a 15gb 3rd gen ipod with touch wheel, but when I plug it into my computer, My computer recognizes it and everything, it just doesn't charge. I have a cigarett charger, and it charges it fine. I updated it to the newest version, and it still doesn't charge, is there any way i can fix that without the restore, since i have music i still haven't transfered, because it keeps dying when plugged into my computer?

Okay. I was reading the USB does not provide power, not that the 3G iPod does not accept power thru USB.
But I must also admit, I forgot the little fact that it's FW charge only.

  • Did I brick my 3rd gen iPod?

3rd gen iPod, five years old, batt's dead but it works fine when plugged in...until now.
I tried to sync it to my iTunes (it hadn't been done in awhile and I had tons of new songs for it) and it locked up before finally ejecting itself. Now all I get is the Apple logo over and over, whether it's plugged into my Macbook or the wall.
Please help, I love my ancient old iPod and I don't want it to die.

I'd like to provide the magic fix, but if Disk Utility does not see the iPod's hard drive (in Disk Mode) and the iPod does not get to its screen menu, it is likely that the iPod's hard drive has become faulty. Most broken +hard drive+ iPods are broken because of the hard drive, and yours lasted a long time.
If you want to try opening the iPod up, you can try a few more thing.
Open the iPod and disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Then reconnect the battery and see if it starts up normally to its screen menu.
If that does not help, disconnect the battery again. This time, also disconnect the hard drive. There are two connection points between the hard drive and the logic board. Disconnect them both and inspect the connections for any corrosion (especially the one at the logic board). Then reconnect the connections firmly, reconnect the battery, and see if it works.
Be very careful opening the iPod. You have to use those plastic tools that come with replacement batteries. Using metal tools like screwdriver will damage the case badly. There is a delicate ribbon cable that connects the two sides of the case, at the top left corner (looking at the iPod from the front). It is very easily damaged, so if possible, leave it connected.
    Here is a helpful guide.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod/iPod-3rd-Generation/92
Tip: Start at the top edge, because there are no clips there. Work to the right and down the right side. It should pop open along the right side. Carefully open it from the right side, like opening a book. Again, be careful with the ribbon cable and connector at the top left corner; don't yank it open there.

  • 3rd gen iPod stuck at apple logo

    hi all,
last week i bought a 15gb 3rd gen iPod from someone.. (with all original accessories and box)
I bought it knowing the battery was shot and bought one the day after i bought the iPod. i havent recieved the battery yet but when i plugged the iPod into my Macbook, the iPod boots to apple screen but stays there..
I can feel the hard drive spinning only when i turn it on.. and after the battery turns off or after a few seconds, i can hear a high pitch whinning sound..
I also thought that even when an iPod battery is dead, it will fully boot or at least say "do not disconnect" when plugged into a computer or ac adapter...
    any help?

When you get your battery, it should come with plastic tools to open the iPod. Try disconnecting the current battery and letting the iPod sit for a few minutes. Then, connect it with no battery. Maybe having no power and connecting it will "jump start" it, assuming there is no problem with hard drive.
Note: If you have not previously opened an iPod... Start at the top edge seam; there are no clips there. You usually get a pair of plastic tools. Open a gap (into the metal half) with one tool, at the center of the top edge. Use the other tool starting at that gap and follow the seam to the top right corner, around the corner, and down the right side. Press into the seam as you go. It should pop open along the right side. Open it like a book from the right side. The left side has a delicate ribbon cable connecting the two halves of the case, so don't yank it open on the left side.

  • I am unable to connect my 3rd gen iPod to my Windows 7 Laptop or iTunes

Once again, Apple support Communities creates a new question instead of letting me search within iPod touch for my own research.
For the past six months I have been unable to sync my iPod to iTunes.
The 3rd Gen iPod Touch will not connect to Windows 7 and not recognized by iTunes 11.1.1.11.
I have data/info on my iPod that I prefer not to compromise by doing a hard reset.
I have confirmed that my iPod nano does sync with iTunes on my Win7 Machine. So I'm pretty certain my cable is working ok.
I've heard that I can somehow sync via wifi, but I'm still not sure if that means I can backup my Notes, Contacts and other data without the use of applications like MS Office/Outlook etc.
Thankfully, or detrimentally, I've been able to go for the last few years without changing the 10k songs on my iPod touch. But over the last six months, I've finally started getting bored with the existing songs. Hence the need to solve the non-syncing issue. And I don't like going blindly forward without a backup. My battery and home button have become glitchy and I'm concerned I may lose the unit completely one day soon.
If anyone reading this has any experience with a similar issue, or could offer advice, workaround, or solution, I would be greatly appreciative. And I hope to assist others as I learn more through solving my Apple issues.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    The Ipod works fine.
Battery charges regularly with the occasional glitch.
    Running iTunes 11.1.1.11
I figured a Nano would probably connect in a simpler way than the touch, but only have a couple computers and cables to test.
I've reinstalled iTunes, but not the full suite, and not all traces. I will attempt this, but I suspect its related to my touch. I was able to connect other iphones to my itunes without issue, using the same cable.
