I have quicktime and have tried unistalling and reinstalling itunes, what do i do?

Now that I've installed Yosemite, my computer keeps telling me that iPhoto needs to be upgraded. When it starts "upgrading the database", it gets almost to the end of the progress bar, then sits and spins. It won't finish.

Last week I installed the Yosemite OS. I'm having trouble with the upgrading of iPhoto. When it says it's upgrading the database, it never finishes. I've started the process a few times, and the progress line always gets to the same place when it sits and spins for hours at a time without any more progress. I thought about putting some of my 10,000 + pictures on discs to see if that would help, but I can't open iPhoto to get at them. Would that help, anyway? My son thinks this computer is too old to accept all updates. The hard drive was replaced 2 years ago.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

If you are using a Windows based computer, try disabling anti virus software and turn off the Firewall.

Just because there are bars showing doesn't mean you are connected to the Internet. When you try going to the iTunes store, does the error message say anything about not connected to the Internet. If so, that's the problem. However, if you can successfully get to a web site in safari, then you do have a connection. In this case, are you sure you are using the right ID and password for the store?
