My First Game

I want to make a two player flash game, but have no idea where to start. Could anyone link me any good tutorials?
This is what I basically want to make:
Each player starts on each end and when the move into the fireld they create a trail.
They must then go to any other side to create an area in their colour. Each player can go over the other players area, but if one player collides with the other players trail, the player who was creating the trail has to be reset back to the edge.
I want to create characters for the players, I want them to continually blink, but only move their legs when the player is moving the character.

If anyone knows of an easy way to add background images to panels, let me know haha. This is easy to do. All you need to do is override the JPanel's paintComponent and draw the image using the Graphics object handed to you via the method's parameter. Be sure though to call super.paintComponent(g) first though. Now how you get the image will depend on the program. If you currently have a JAR file, then you may do well to package the images with the JAR file and obtain the image via getResource() method call, or you could get your image from the web,... But most important: check the Sun Graphics tutorials and search these forums for many examples. Good places to search include the Swing forum and the Graphics forum.

  • The first game I created.

    Hi,
I created a game in java about 8 months ago or so. This is my first attempt at a game. It is kind of a cross between Missle Command and Asteroids, (Yeah, I know.. another space game). If any of you have the chance please check it outand let me know your opinion. Any feedback, good or bad is appreciated.
    Controls:
Mouse moves ship from left to right.
    Click to shoot.
Move mouse outside of Applet to pause the game.

    Thanks

    Hey,
If had my source code, I would show it to you, but unfortunately I forgot to back it up before I formatted my hard drive. I think it may be on a disc somewhere, but that could be anywhere. I wrote a copy of PONG in java that uses a thread. I can show you that if you want. I also have a very bad version of the game you played. I can give you that source code if you want it, but it is terrible and may lead you in the wrong direction.
If you have any specific questions about how I did something in my game, please feel free ask and I will try to explain as best I can.

  • First game available on apple Store

I finally got my first app BunnyJump! to the appStore. It was hard from the start till the end.
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bunnyjump/id418717982?mt=8&ls=1
I'm happy with the game as it is now, I went through all the process of optimization with the packager and then uploading to appStore wasn't easy neither.
This forum really helped, it's the only place where i found real answers to my problems, thank you guys !
It's working well on iphone4, I didn't try on other devices, yes i know shame on me...
It would be really appreciated if you can give me some feedback about the game.
Here are some promo code :
    96PMKWKLN74H
    FA3R6AR4LHPW
    JF6YFNLRWHKF

    Thanks for the feedback !
I didn't sell much... actually, I'm quite disappointed with the sales : less than a hundred and it's about a month I released this game...
But I still think there is a way to get this app and futur apps more noticed on the app store.
The game is still slow on first generation iphone, the problem is that I can't update with the new air 2.6 without deleting the actual game and so all the reviews...
That's too bad, compiling with ADT made some significant performance improvement in the game.
But I have to compile with PFI to keep the review and update the game with new features... (updated with online highscore system yesterday)

  • Want help in developing my first game in java!!

I want to develop a tetris game in java..can any one help me on this..basically i m new to java programming, i want to know abt the graphical part ..how to make that.. i will code the rest..I want to make an application rather than an applet..

look at the Java2D demo that comes with the JDK
it has lots of source code and just about everything you'll need to do in Tetris (technology wise) is in there, except the game logic.

  • First game to make?

For those of you that have some experiance in java, what would you recommend begginer programmers to create that would give them a nice example of the things that they will have to program when they get into the more advanced games?

Thanks for help me to make my first game in pure Java

    - 652kB is way too much to load at once. Load images when needed (preload them in the background before they are needed if you don't want delays when displaying an unloaded picture). Also load the music in the background. It doesn't matter if the music doesn't start immediately. It's more important that the game does.
    - Make a switch to turn of the damn music! (Who would want some POS music when listening to mp3s? Or when surfing on a library computer. Or in a netcaf?)
    - Make the user interface more intuitive. E.g. what's that ">>>>" button supposed to be? Where can you click? What happens when you click e.g. at the numbers on the left/right to the wheels? Or on the wheels themselves? Each time I click on "Bet 1" the "Bet:" field value is increased, but when I click on "Bet 9" it stays on "9".
    - And don't forget to make the music optional.
    - Really remember making the music optional.
This is a good start, but you do need to work on it some more. (If you haven't read any good user interface book(s) I recommend reading GUI Bloopers by Jeff Johnson.) Good luck!

  • Game Center friend request problem

I am using an iPad Air on iOS 8.1.3. Me and a friend are trying to become friends in Game Center. At first, we couldn't get any requests to show up. We both went to the Add friend feature and tried entering both usernames and email addresses and neither of us were getting a request from the other. I have tried restarting the iPad and signing out and signing back in. After persistence, we managed to get requests to show up on each others iPads, but it wouldn't let us accept the request. It would appear, we would hit accept and then the request would stay in the requests list like we had never hit accept. Then my Game Center homepage would sometimes not change, or sometimes it would say 1 request and 1 friend, and sometimes if i had recently hit accept multiple times, it would say 1 request and 2 friends, but when you go in the friends list, it is blank. The friend is also running iOS 8.1.3. I am new to using Apple products, and this would be my first Game Center friend.

Be sure to send Apple feedback about the problem.

  • Synchronize game center

    Hello,
I configured my game center AFTER playing with games during a long while. Now, my "old" games, or my first games, are on game center but without my high scores! Is there a way to sync game center with my "old" games?
    Thanks

    HI all,
so this was a question which people had in 2013 and I still have the same question. Will appreciate if someone could put some light on how we can make this work.

  • Game Center problem

Hello! I want to ask something about Game Center, but I am new and I didn't know where to post it. Anyways, I had 2 Game Center accounts (I don't know why...) the first is Ivaka5 and the other is + IvakaS +. I usually play games on the second. Today I played CSR: Classics and then went to have lunch. After that I wanted to play Galaxy Life: Pocket Adventures, but when I started it a message showed and it told me that my Game Center account have been disabled due to security...(something like that) please reset it. I didn't know what to do and I closed everything. I went on my Home Screen. When I tried to open the game again, it logged me in my first Game Center account - Ivaka5 and I had to start everything again (same on the other games that I played with + Ivakas +). I opened my Settings and found Game Center there. There was only one account - Ivaka5 and the other just dissapeard. It was very annoying cuz I have to start all my games from the beginning. Can You help me, please? I don't know what to do, as I said I am new. Can I have my + IvakaS + account back, or I need to start everything again?

  • How to create a game. Basic steps.

So, just browsing through these forums, I see many posts by prospective game designers wanting to get started. But many of these questions are so ill-researched or off basis that most people don't even know how to respond.
So here's a quickie guide on how to get started learning to make a game. Notice I didn't say making a game. First you learn, then you make, or else you'll just get frustrated and quit.
    Here's the basic steps:
    1) You need to learn Java. Seriously, don't even think about writing a game if you don't want to. Get a book. My favorite was one by Ivor Horton. But really, any will do.
If Java is your first programming language, it is important for you to read through the book carefully and do the excercises. This is for you learn what a "programming language" actually is.
All a computer can do is add numbers. A computer itself knows nothing about Mario or how to make Mario jump. So YOU have to figure out, just what does Mario have to do with numbers.
    2) Write a simple game, without animation in it.
My first game was Minesweeper. Other examples include Solitaire, or Poker, etc...
This teaches you how to organize a "large" program. Organization is important. If you don't organize, you'll begin writing a game, and eventually get stuck because your code is unreadable, and your bugs will be impossible to trace down. You'll be frustrated and quit.
    3) Learn the concepts behind animation and a 2D game.
I see questions like: "I want to make a game, and I drew Mario. Now how to I make him move?". This is for you people.
Animation is drawing a bunch of images in rapid succession. And a game, basically is a logic system that decides which animations to play at any given time.
    4) Write a 2D game.
Now, you are ready to attempt an actual game. I started small and wrote a tetris-esque puzzler as my first game with animation. I suggest you do the same, but if you feel ready you can probably jump into a major project now.
    5) Learn about 3D.
For those aiming high, you can get started learning the concepts behind 3D now. I suggest you know at least a basic knowledge of trigonometry. This means know your sin, cos, and tan inside out, or else you'll up for a lot of work.
3D is not like 2D. There are quite a few concepts that you will need to learn, and they're not immediately intuitive. Those who have a stronger math background will progress faster. Those who have a weaker background will find it more difficult. But you'll learn a lot along the way. Nothing teaches trig faster than writing a 3D engine.
    6) Write a 3D engine.
You're entering the hardcore right about now. Few people on this forum will have experience with this and you'll need to do a lot of thinking. Mainly, just because, there's not many people left to ask.
Some of you will have some ideas on writing this engine. In this case, I recommend you go ahead and try. You might not succeed, but trying will teach you more than anything else.
Those that don't quite have it down yet, or those that tried and didn't quite succeed can follow along with a book that takes you through this step. The book that I used was "Java game programming". It has a very in-depth section on 3D.
    7) Make your engine fast.
This step is probably the hardest of all. If you completed step 6, you'll notice that writing a 3D engine, and writing a fast 3D engine is two almost completely different things.
Here's when you'll research into various computer science algorithms and techniques in order to speed up your engine. Actually, this is when you'll probably learn the concept of "algorithm".
This is research! You'll find almost no help at forums for this step. Nothing but hard work.
I can't comment on more than that, as that's as far as I've gotten so far. But that's the basic roadmap.
    Good luck on your games.
    -Cuppo

Okay I am going to add a few points since they have come up recently.
With relation to what you should know with Java.
Beyond the basics you should get a good grounding in the following
    - threading
    - networking in Java (if applicable)
    Threading
For threading you can use the concurrency tutorial found here http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/concurrency/index.html
Threading is really a must. No kidding. Because you will be unable to do anything performance wise without it. Additionally you can't normally take a non-threaded application and slap threading on it. You need to have a design that incorporates being threaded.
You also don't want to come up with a design to find out later that it's wrong. Don't be afraid to ask questions about your design in general and as how it relates to threading.
Making a good multi-threaded application is actually not all that difficult, once you understand it. But this is the thing that seems to trip up alot of people. I see an awful lot of bad threading code in the Java Programming forum. Tip: If you are using Thread Priorities you are doing something wrong!
    Networking
The Java networking tutorial may be found here http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/index.html
This is a basic tutorial though so don't assume you know everything there is to know once you have finished it. If you are serious about your development then I HIGHLY recommend the following book
    http://books.google.com/books?id=l6f1jTB_XCYC&dq=Fundamental+Networking+in+Java&psp=1
As a bonus the author is a long-time member on these forums and a regular in the Networking forums.
Networking your program, especially depending on how you will use it is important to design into your game from the get-go. If you are planning to make a multi-player online game you need to know what the limitations are with regards to performance early in your development. If you build a beautiful game but it runs like a dog because of what you did in your networking code it would be a real shame and worse it may not be fixable.
Again don't be afraid to ask questions.
    Restatement of CuppoJava's Comments
This is a good thread and that's why I am adding these comments to it. I would also say that I totally agree with the sentiments on what you should expect.
If you are new to Java and expect that in just a few months you are going to crank out a game with a custom 3-d engine you are in for a nasty surprise.
It isn't that we want to be discouraging, but please do try and set yourself realistic goals and time deadlines. You'll find it a much more positive experience and the less frustrated you are the more likely we are to be able to help you. :)

  • How to encapsulate two games in a new flash document

    Hi mates!
Now that I have my first two games I want to encapsulate them in a new document!
    Here is my idea:
Create a new document with 4 keyframes in the main timeline.
The first one will accommodate the title and two "play" buttons (each allowing to play a game).
The second one will contain the first game.
The third one will contain the second game.
The last keyframe will contain the scores.
Each game contains a movieclip that is being controlled by a main class that I wrote using as3.0. For example imagine that one of the games is a simple rectangle that the user moves with the arrow keys. The motion code is inside the main document class. The second game is something similar.
So, how do I "import" the games (that were developed totally independent of each other ) to the keyframes of my new flash document?
    Could you help me?
    Thanks in advance

Importing the swf's will destroy any actionscript they have.  You'll need to copy the timelines of the games into movieclips in your other file.
You might instead consider just loading the games dynamically, making the main file more of a loading/summary platform that you use to communicate with the loaded games.  This approach would likely allow you to easily add even more games as long as you have a similar communication scheme established.

  • Flash game-skeeball

I need to create a flash version of the game skeeball. I've
never done a flash game before and don't know where to start. I've
found several tutorials and stuff on games, but none of them seem
to fit the game of skeeball. Does anyone know any good tutorials or
have any suggestions how to set this up?? I was thinking random
movie clips of the ball going into one of the 8 holes, but I wanted
something more realistic. Please any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you for your time and patience.

Do I know the answer - nope. But that is the challenge of
making a Flash game, coming up with the ideas on how to make it
work. When I created my first game I didn't know jack squat about
using Flash. I basically came up with the concept, then figured out
how to do each part step by step until it all came together. So,
think about how you want the game to work, and don't worry about
the "how to do it" part.
Also, you might want to think of an original game, or
something that hasn't been done before:
