My iMac 10.6.8 will not stay asleep. It keeps coming back on seconds or minutes after I put it to sleep.

My iMac will not stay asleep. A few seconds to a few minutes after I put it to sleep, it comes back on.

OK, a few more things coming to mind:
Set the energy saver to sleep in 1 min
Diconnect every single peripheral you have connected to your iMac
Eject any DVD/CD you may have in the drive
Turn off all applications you have running
iTunes or DVD Player could be waking it constantly up if accessing your drives
Messaging apps could be looking for internet connection
Disable Wi-Fi
Disable Bluetooth - you don't have cells paired to it, do you?
Disconect Ethernet cable (if connected)
Spotlight - is it indexing your drive? (a dot within a magnifying glass would be pulsating and won't let your Mac go to sleep)
Connect a wired mouse - if you have it - and go to Apple menu then click SLEEP
If it remains asleep, keep adding all apps, devices and services back until you find which one is causing it.
If nothing helps, then I'm out of ideas....
In case you have Apple TV - the remote can indeed make it wake up.

  • My home page will not stay saved,it keeps going back to the firefox default page

After I've saved my home page(yahoo.com)there will be no problem until my laptop either is turned off or restarted. After I turn on my laptop when I connect to the internet, my home page is changed from yahoo.com to the firefox default almost like if I just updated firefox. And I'm getting tired of having to change my home page back every time I turn my laptop on.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
Some security software has virtualization or sandbox features that may cause problems by protecting and restoring files in the Firefox profile folder.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'll presume that you can adjust the brightness after bootup. If that display preference is kept in PRAM, it's possible that the PRAM battery is wearing out.
Here's what Apple says about what's stored in PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1242
To test that possibility, turn off "Set date and time automatically" in the Date & Time panel of System Preferences (if it's set), shut down and unplug your Mac, then let it sit for a few minutes. When you reboot it, check the system date and time. If the PRAM battery is failing, those may be set incorrectly.
iFixit describes replacing the PRAM battery of an iMac G5 as of "moderate" difficulty. See these pages:

  • Ipod will not stay connected for more then a few seconds

I was going to update my nano this morning after downloading the newest version of software, and first off it said the firmware was corrupt. so then I restored it, and it would not restore to the new version so i used the older version. the ipod seems to work in my hand but when i connect it to my computer it will not stay connected for more then a few seconds, then it ejects its self, but itunes still shows it as being there even though the rest of the computer does not
I have not had any issues with it since i bought it which was last june.
    any ideas?
    John

    Hi John,
I would suggest, with your iPod disconnected, that you force your iPod into disk mode (following the instructions in this article)
Connect your iPod to your computer.
Then, try restoring it in iTunes while it is connected in disk mode.
Can you successfully restore your iPod?
If so, when the restoring and resyncing process is all complete, now update your iPod to the latest firmware.
    Any success with trying that?

  • My Mac mini with 10.6.8 will not stay asleep.

My Mac mini with 10.6.8 will not stay asleep when I click sleep or use the key command. It wakes up immediately. But when I leave it go to sleep on it's own (Energy Saver) it stays asleep. I've set it at approx. 8min. Is their any fix so it will stay asleep from the comand?
Thanks for the suggestion. Didn't figure out what the probelm was, butin disconnecting every thiing and putting it bck it,s working now.

Just a suggestion: In System Preferences, in Energy Saver, under the Power Adapter tab, if "wake for network access" is checked try unchecking it. Probably isn't what the problem is, but worth a try.

  • Power mac G5 will not stay asleep

Hi, My power mac G5 will not stay asleep--it goes to sleep for several seconds then wakes up again = what to do?

    Hi Al,
Most likely cause is a PCI card, or some attached USB or Firewire device, but possiblt 3rd party SW.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
How to reset the SMU/PMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) ...

    Earlier G3, G4, G5 models...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for Sleep problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IMac will not stay asleep!  Widgets are to blame!!

Thought I'd share this piece of information, it might be in here somewhere but I could not find the resolution. Here goes:
Recently, my iMac would not stay asleep, my screensaver would not even start. If I forced my screensaver with expose, it would not fall asleep after the specified time in system preferences>energy saver. If i selected "sleep" from the apple menu, it would wake back up after 2-10 seconds. I just recently set up my airport network and thought about that, nothing. I thought it might be a program, so I shut down all my programs, and still nothing. I was so frustrated so I decided to search the forums. I found a post that suggested to look at the Activity Monitor (apps>utilities>activity monitor). So I did that and guess what: the activity keeping my imac from sleeping was DASHBOARD. I had a great widget that had swimming fish, only the fish swam all the time, and prevent my computer from sleeping. Keep that in mind when you are adding widgets.
Problem solved, and now my iMac sleeps at night, and so do I! (come on, it was too easy to pass :D)

    Good to hear.
    Enjoy your Mac

  • MSI GX630 - My turbo will not stay on for more than a few seconds

I have the laptop plugged in to AC and when I enable the turbo , it says turbo on then almost immediatly it says turbo off and turns back off. Some times it will stay on for up to about a min, but it never will just stay on. Do I have a bum cpu that can't handle the over clocking, overheats, and then it automatically reverts back to normal cpu speed or what? Anyone else have this problem? It is not that big of a deal, but if they are going to sell a laptop with a turbo option, I think they should test it to make sure that it works with something that taxes the cpu and can handle it.

  • Will Not Stay Asleep

Hi All- I have a 2006 white MacBook that has treated me so well, until now. She just won't stay asleep. When I put her into sleep mode-a second or two later the optic drive checks itself and the computer wakes up. This has come to be over the past few weeks and it has been waking up faster as time passes. These are the steps I've taken in which to try and ameliorate this problem. All have had no effect.
    1) Resetting SMC
    2) Resetting PRAM
    3) Changing the RAM
    4) Turned off file sharing-to prevent waking
    5) Don't have bluetooth so that's not waking her
    6) Shut down and restarted
    7) Changing the hibernate mode in console from 3 to 0
    8) Turning off airport
    9) Closing all applications
    10) Talking sweet and asking nicely.
The response is the same whether I close the lid or push the power button and choose sleep. I have been hounding the forums for some solutions, but I have exhausted the solutions that I have found. Bit of service history: Replaced the battery under the battery recall with a new one, replaced a faulty AirPort card this past summer and the lower plastic case on the bottom. All done at an authorized service center. Been working fine since then, until a few weeks ago. Also the only variation on stock configuration is an upgraded hard drive to a Seagate 500GB last year, but have had no problems associated with that.
Help would be appreciated. I am out of warranty-my three years is up, so hopefully it's nothing nasty. Cheers all and thanks for the info in advance.

I also have the same problem. I have the newer battery as per the original post, and no other modifications. Otherwise my story is identical.
    Any suggestions?
Edit: After some more fiddling I found that bluetooth had turned itself on and was messing with my sleeping, I've never used it before and made a point to have it off, but somehow it came back on. Maybe this can help? Its worth checking it again.

  • Sleep will not stay asleep

I have a Mac Mini and when I put the machine to sleep, via the Menu sleep option, it goes to sleep and then wakes itself up about a minute later.
How can I get the Mac to stay asleep until I want it to wake?

It is possible that the "wakeup" is being caused by perceived activity on the connections to peripherals.
If you have a Bluetooth keyboard and/or mouse there is a possibility that they are sending periodic "messages" to the mini, or in a perverse logic some BT devices may send a message when they are about to go into sleep mode themselves (ie. "here's a disconnect request") which could well be about a minute after you've put the mini to sleep.
If you have any USB attached devices there is a similar possibility. In addition, I have noticed that USB cables that are near power cables pick up EM interference from power surges (eg. switching on a desk lamp) so you might want to check for the proximity of other cables.
    Hope that helps.

  • 27 inch Mac will not stay asleep

Bought my computer (which I love) this past Tuesday. At night put the computer into sleep mode by touching on/off button with the wireless mouse shut off. I am not using the wireless keyboard. Sometime after I have gone to bed the computer cycles back on and stays on. My wife is complaining that the light from the computer is keeping her awake. Anyone else having this same issue? Thanks for responding.

In System Preferences -> Energy Saver, find the checkbox "wake for network activity" and uncheck it.

  • IPhoto will not stay open on my Desk top when I click on dock icon?

    Hi!
Can anyone tell me why iPhoto will not stay open, and keeps closing into "Applications" file that, incidentally IS also situated on the dock as well?
This is probably an easy answer..but, I just cannot figure it out!
    Thanks!
    Marilyn

and keeps closing into "Applications" file that, incidentally IS also situated on the dock as well?
Iphoto is an application and so is installed in your Applications folder. The icon on the Dock is a shortcut to the application in the Applications Folder. It's not the app, just a shortcut.
Describe what happens when you launch iphoto?

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:

Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
