Without knowing exactly what troubleshooting you've tried, if you are using a Windows based computer, try iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
Disable a/v software and turn off the Firewall.. see if that helps.
Disable antivirus software
Turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off

Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

Its been like this for awhile and I can not fix it

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Hey, i've tried connecting my ipod to my laptop itunes and it's not working. My laptop shows it's connected but itunes isn't showing it's there. i've tired reinstalling, taking itunes off rebooting the laptop and putting it back on. I don't know how to get it working. Plus on top i restarted my ipod and the choice between wifi and connecting to itunes i'm choosing itunes but it's still not showing up. I can use the help for the Windows 7 and ipod touch. You did install the latest iTunes (10.5) right? If the problem was that iTunes does not see the iPod try:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
or

Installing iTunes does not cause content to magically appear on the computer.
Your media is only where you put it.
iOS devices are not backup devices.
Copy the media from the old computer to the new computer.

Did you try a hard reset with the iPod still connected to your PC? Have you tried multiple USB ports, preferably high powered USB 2.0 ports?
To do a hard reset, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Have you also worked through each and every single troubleshooting suggestion in this Apple support document?

Same problem here with the same iPod- Gen4, 20 G- this started on Friday. None of the "fixes" Apple offers help because iTunes and My Computer freeze when the iPod is connected. If I disconnect while My Computer is open, it shows up briefly as the E: drive with an exclamation point and then disappears. If I disconnect with iTunes open, everything that I tried to open while it was connected suddenly pops up. I can't restore the iPod because the Updater freezes while the iPod is connected. There is no difference when I try to do these things in disk mode. The disk manager function in windows sees the iPod, but freezes up when you try and click on it.
I've run all the diagnostic tests and it passed them all. It does the same thing on other computers (all PCs) that I've tried.

I am using an ion piece of equipment to record vinyl reccords to my iMac and in turn save them in iTunes. I have recorded many records this way and have never had a problem until yesterday. I recorded three songs from records to iTunes and was successful as they are on the song list and will play on the iMac. This might sound weird, but here's an idea which worked for me re music that was newly added to itunes and showed up in my ipod but wouldn't play - I simply played the tracks in itunes first, just a second of time or so will do it, not the whole track, then connect the ipod and sync again and this time they played - hope this helps.

If your iTunes is set on manual sync, then you have to manually drag and drop. Otherwise every time yousyncyou'll get all changes even if you don't want it.

If you have TV shows that are not synced to your iPod classic giving the error message shown, it is generally because the file is in a format that the iPod is not able to play. See this article for a complete explanation -
