Yes. But what ever you do, don't buy any of the so called "cleanup" software. It is all worthless crapware.

  • My mac is running extremely slow. More often than not when I try to click something or type something it gives me the "thinking" pointer icon.  I ran the etre check program and got this:

    Problem description:
Mac is running extremely slow.  Get the scrolling pointer icon every time I click something.

.My MacBook Pro is running very slow. How can I check is out?

Backup your data.  Your disk/SSD may be failing.
    What has changed lately?
    - Has your disk/SSD filled up recently?
              How much free space?
              Less than 10 GB?
              Less than 20 GB?
    - Did you upgrade OS X recently (for example from 10.8 to 10.9 or 10.9 to 10.9.1)?
    - Have you installed any 3rd-party software recently?
Run Disk Utility (from the Applications  > Utilities folder).
    - Click on the system disk (Macintosh HD) and Verify Disk.
    - Does it report errors or does it finish normally?
    Try an SMC Reset.

    Boot in Safe Mode.

When in Safe Mode does it operate normally?
After rebooting in normal mode is it faster?

  • Ever since my upgrade to lion 10.7.3, and iCloud, my macbook is running extremely slow. What can I do? It doesn't seem like my contacts are pushing through to the computer from iPhone.

Ever since my upgrade to lion 10.7.3, and iCloud, my macbook is running extremely slow. What can I do? It doesn't seem like my contacts are pushing through to the computer from iPhone.

Then your basic issues are: too little RAM, incompatible software, dysfunctional installation.
Add more RAM or kill as many programs that you use until the computer is running normally.
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps. Upgrade any old software.
    Reinstall OS X:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Alternatively, see:
Reinstall OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Choose the version you have installed now:
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

  • My mac is running very slow.  what can i do to find out what's wrong?

Hi! My mac is running very slow!  What can I do to check what's wrong?

    How much RAM is installed?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?

  • Can anyone offer advice on how to speed up my mac its running extremely slow for a few months now, I have included my Etre report!

    Problem description:

  • My Mac is running very slow lately

My Macbook is running excrushiatingly slow lately and I'm really not sure what the problem is or how to fix it. I've never had to delve into what makes a Mac tick before because I've simply never had many problems with it so I really don't know where to even start. Pretty much all of my apps are running slow and the turney rainbow circle thing keeps appearing for longer and longer each time I load a new page in Safari, I open my image folder through Photoshop, I want to play a song in iTunes, whatever I do, my Mac just seems to have to think really hard about it. I've googled the problem and all I seem to find are nonsense sites trying to get me to download something to clean up my Mac or organise my Trash or make my Apps run faster, etc.

    Hey Beckalooby,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing performance issues with your Mac Pro. The following resource may provide a solution:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Microsoft Excel(for Mac) is running extremely slow

I am using Microsoft Excel(for Mac) and it is running extremely slow.  I have a 3 different functions running and about 10,000 lines of data, but to delete 1 line of data or add a column takes about half an hour.  I tried rebooting my computer and that didn't really help too much.  Is there anything else I can do?  I have a 13-inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

  • My mac is running really slow. What can I do

The mac is running really slowly and I can hear a background noise as if the pc is processing, simple things like opening new pages or emails or dicuments is taking a long time.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Mac mini running EXTREMELY slow

I bought the Mac Mini server just 4 months ago and it is running incredibly slow.  I do not use it as a server, just bought this version for the extra disk space.
The CPU load is very low, and less than 2 GB of 8GB total memory is used by the system.  But the Spotlight seacrh simply does not work (it shows the greay wheel going round and round).
    Your help is appreciated.

Thanks.  Below is the info you requested.  I repalced my user-name in the log with "USERNAME".  I also deleted many exactly the same error messages for easy readability.
I moved all the media and picture files out of the home directory.  I see that Spotlight is now indexing.  But in console I now see hundreds of messages like below:
    4/17/13 6:02:38.000 PM kernel[0]: fsevents: watcher falling behind: Memeod (pid: 63) rd:  443 wr:  443 q_size: 1024 flags: 0x1

  • Mac Pro running extremely slow

I can't seem to diagnose this problem. Let's start with the hardware.
    Mac Pro, 4GB, Dual 500GB - Raid 0, 250GB, 300GB and external 500GB.
My internal Raid setup (1TB) was nearly full a few weeks ago and I cleared off half the drive onto the external 500GB. Thinking my problem was a full boot drive... That however didn't fix the problem and I actually believe it seems worse now then it was before doing this.
I ordered an additional 4GB Ram yesterday and it should be here sometime mid-week. This is something I needed anyway and wasn't ordered as a fix for this issue, but if I can't solve it, I figure it should go a long way to cutting down the issue.
I DO NOT want to re-install everything from scratch as it would mean having to setup all my apps again and I really don't want to do that...
    Symptoms:
Upon boot after everything is loaded, the machine will grind for a minute or two eventually coming to a halt. Further, launching anything (Safari, WoW (heh), Outlook, etc) will cause massive harddrive noise (no loud noises, just excessive grinding) and eventually come up after what feels like forever.
WoW launches on my first-gen macbook about 3x as fast as my mac pro. (To give some comparison).
    Apps running at launch:
Parallels (even turned off, speed is roughly the same)
    Outlook
    Text Expander
    Todos
    iStat
    Hardware monitors:
CPU is next to nothing, almost always flatlined, even when doing excessive loading, obviously CPU is not the issue here.
    Memory reports:
    Free: 2.55GB
    Wired: 606.07MB
    Active: 798.62MB
    Inactive: 31.77MB
    Used: 1.40GB
    VM Size: 75.87GB
    Page Ins: 290.32MB
    Page Outs: 0 Bytes
    Swap Used: 0 Bytes
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I just want the machine to run like it did, as it sits, it's almost impossible to be productive here...

Wow, I'm proud of your accomplishments. You seem so eager to list them... I'm a software developer who used to do IT and owned a computer store prior to moving exclusively to software development. I know a thing or two as well. But I prefer solutions than waving monikers around.
Consider the following. I deal with hundreds of thousands of small files while developing software. The primary HD was nearly full before removing the vast majority of said files and moving a large chunk of data to an external drive. It is unlikely that OSX's VM file has been recreated since. This being the case, it is EXTREMELY likely that the VM file is HIGHLY fragmented as evidenced by both the excessive load times (quite audible drive noise denoting loading) and low CPU load. This being the case, my initial reaction was to refresh the VM file, eliminating (or greatly reducing) fragmentation.
I came here because I was hoping someone could help with that, or offer another possible solution. Instead I've been insulted and told to buy new hardware. This is not a solution, it's a band-aid. All my data IS backed up and I have ZERO hardware/software problems. Excessive load time does not require new hardware when hardware was previously not an issue.

You may need the "gopro" agent if you've a "GoPro" camera, and you may need the "sierrawireless" and "novatelwireless" if you use a Sierra Wireless device of some sort and if you actually need the novatel drivers, but I think that you can safely get rid of the Seagate drivers (unless you need them for some sort of NAS???) and the other stuff.
Give a call back and tell us what you actually have and actually need. Most of it just looks like junk!

EDIT: And you definitely need to uninstall ANY SmithMicro software!!!

  • My mac is running 10.5.8- how can i get 10.6.8

We have an MAC desktop and are runing 10.5.8 -- the ipad is telling me we need 10.6.8 to move songs from IPAD to mac -- how do i do this,  Do i need to buy leopard?  Does that wipe out everything on the mac

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • I have a new ipad with retina display and the orientation change from portrait to landscape is extremely slow? How can I improve the speed?

Any ideas on how to improve the speed ?

    Hi rodtheprod,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the issue you are describing. If a movie from the iTunes Store supports multiple languages, they can usually be changed as outlined in the following article:
    iTunes: Language settings for video
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5562
If this is not possible and no changes have been made to the country settings for the iTunes Store, you may want to try redownloading the movie (if it is still available):
    Download past purchases
