This could be a software/state problem or a hardware problem.  Here are steps to resolve the former.

  • Mac Pro Won't Start After Installing Security Update Tonight

I just installed the latest security update for Lion on my Mac Pro via software update. The update seemed to install fine. I was about to start work when all of a sudden the system rebooted on its own. Now it just continues to reboot because it can't complete the boot up.
I tried resetting PRAM and SMC, but this didn't help.
I tried booting up from CD using an old SNL disk. I was able to get to disk tools once. I checked my startup volume and disk tools said the volumes is fine. I was checking permissions when once again the system rebooted on its own.
I tried starting up in safe mode, but it only gets so far into the boot process before it reboots.
I tried starting in verbose mode, and noticed several SMC related errors (this is why I tried to reset the SMC). No joy.
If I leave the system sit a few minutes, it gets further into the boot process, but still won't boot completely.
    Any suggestions?

If you are encountering kernel panics, check in the logs as suggested here and post a recent kernel panic log:

  • Mac Pro won't start; please help!!

Had Mac Pro for 6 months. All was going well until today. Then I noticed my Mail application was not sounding a chime when mail came in. I repaired permissions and re-started my computer.
Only it did not re-start. I got no start-up chime and after the grey screen appeard, after about 15 seconds a dark blanket transition goes down the screen and a message comes up in several laungauges, English being:
"You must re-start your computer. Either hold down the power button for 8 seconds or press the restart button".
I held the power button in for 8 seconds, then turned it back on again, same thing...
I reset the SMC/Pram thing (whatever it is called) by doing it both ways i.e. unplugging every cable, then plugging in just power/keyboard/mouse, the other way was pressing the switch inside the machine; nothing.
    My machine won't start up.
    Any ideas?

What you're seeing is called a kernel panic. You can read more about what causes these and steps to take on the following web pages:

  • Mac Pro won't start and display has no signal?

My Mac Pro goes to sleep and won't start. The display doesn't have a signal. What is wrong?

After a few hours of trying to work things out...I've discovered its related to the ATI Radeon 2600 HD XT Card (dual cards and monitors). Once I remove one card from each machine the systems started but the monitors remained in what looks like suspended mode display "No signal".
Tried to download firmware update. My system wouldn't allow the installer to work. Apparently already have the firmware.
The Display icon shows only four choices for the monitors resolution. On my working systems there are at least 15 resolution settings. Where is the ATI Radeon software on the system. The About this Mac doesn't show any Graphics or Display information.

  • Boot Camp: Mac Pro won't start after Windows install

After installing Boot Camp on a Mac Pro dual 2.66 (firmware updated), XP installer went through installation & copying files, then restarted. Went to a black screen with white Windows-style text that said something along the lines of "XP cannot start from this CD, press any key to restart." Totally unresponsive, held down power to restart. Will no longer power up. Have reset the SMC without any effect. Makes a brief sound when trying to start, but does not actually start up.
Is there any known power issue that I might be able to solve myself, or is the supply likely blown?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I put Vista on its own dedicated drive, 64GB Vista, the rest as FAT32 to make it easier to share files. I had to remove the OS X drives in order to allow Windows/Vista to install. Once installed, had a black screen and some blue crash screen, until I ran the BootCamp driver updates.
I would try unplugging your drive(s) first and see if you boot from Tiger Installer DVD - or better, boot Apple Hardware Test (hold down "d" on startup from Install Disk #1).

  • Mac Pro won't start up.  What's the best way to check the power supply?

Hello. I'm having a severe problem with my 2007 Mac Pro. The symptoms are very easy to describe. The computer apparently shut itself off overnight, and when I press the power button to turn it on, absolutely nothing happens. No lights, no chime, no signs of any power whatsoever in the computer. I have never had major problems with the computer before. (Although I had recently noticed some minor skipping problems with streaming videos and Firefox had started hanging occasionally.)
So far, I have checked the power cable and the power outlet. I have also reset the SMC (holding in the Power button for 5 seconds with the unit unplugged). I am unable to see any light in the diagnostic LEDs (including LED 1) when I press the DIAG_LED button on the logic board.
While I welcome other suggestions, all I can figure is that this is either a power supply problem or a major logic board failure, but I don't know which. I have a multimeter and would like to test very directly if the power supply is the problem, because they are very expensive and obviously I do not want to order a replacement supply if it would not fix the computer. Does anyone know what the best way to test the supply directly is? What pins on what cable should I test, and what voltage should I look for?
Also: No the computer is not under any warranty. If at all possible, I would like to fix this myself. Thanks for any help you can give.

Well, I may have found the answer to my question as to why replacing the fuse dows not seem to be encouraged. I cut out the failed fuse (fast fuse, ceramic, 16 Amp 250V), and replaced it with another that was as close to it in spec as I could find (15 A instead of 16). Then I put the supply back in the case.
When I tried to plug it in, I got an immediate spark, followed by an acrid smell from the power supply. Later inspection revealed that the new fuse blew, as did another component nearby (not sure what it was) where I could see blackening and the smell was concentrated. At this point, I would consider myself lucky if the power supply didn't take anything else on the computer out with it.
Lesson learned; will try a new power supply and go from there.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro won't start.

Early 2008 Mac Pro. Spelt some liquid on top that ran down front of computer. Tilted it back to wipe underneath and it shut down. Now it will not start. Processor fan runs full speed and that's it.

    Hello,
My Friend spilt a drink on their laptop and the device started to smoke.
My suggestion is to get a hair tight container fill it with rice and put your computer in it, and leave it for 1-2 days.
The rice should absorb most of the water, and hopefully it should work again.
If it does turn on make sure you check the lights under the keys!
If they still don't work my suggestions are to take it in to an Apple store.
    Good Luck!
I wish the best for your fellow Mac!

  • Late 2008 Mac Pro won't start -- help! Hangs up on Airport: RSN handshake complete on en2.

    Hello Mac Pro user,
I have a late 2008 Mac Pro. It will not start anymore. The computer chimes and then goes to the Apple icon screen with spinning cursor, but then it freezes and goes no further.
So I did a single user start up [shift command S],then I let the info. load on the black screen, and found that the system hangs up at this line: Airport: RSN handshake complete on en2.  Does anyone know what to do?
How do I get it to boot up again?
    Thanks,
    Yvette

pull the drives you have. ]
F'ind a way to do a clean system install on another drive.
Clone your user data to another drive also.
ie, create a new solid foundation.
but until your repair your drives, by booting off another device, don't use them. Pull them for now.

  • Mac Pro won't start in safe mode

In order to solve another problem in Garage Band, I tried to start my Mac Pro up in "Safe Mode," But the status bar wouldn't get past about 40%, and the computer froze up.  Tried it twice, same result each time.  I don't really see a problem here, unless it indicates something bad.  Anyone have an opinion?

Boot from your installation disc. Select Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. Select the boot volume and run "Repair Disk" (not "Repair Permissions.") I'm assuming you have backups; if not; back up first.

  • Mac Pro won't start; power supply problems?

Hi friends, I'm having some very inconvenient hardware problems. My Mac Pro system will not start up. I have done some preliminary searching for similar issues, and it seems there are too many possible outcomes for me to tell directly from their answers. I'm writing in hopes that someone has had the same experience and can offer advice.
    Here's my symptoms.
    • Mac Pro system, late 2009. Dual Quad-core Intel Xenon, I think. (I usually just go to System Profile, rather than memorise this crap.) Two internal drives (SSD for system, HDD for data); all other hardware standard.
    • Power light indicator is solid white. No blinking.
    • No startup chime and no audio bleeps
    • Display is dark, no activity of any kind.
    • This behaviour persists with no network connections, no hardware peripherals outside of Apple Studio display and its associated USB cable (which allows the keyboard)
Do we suspect it's the power supply? It seems to power on, and clicks to life as it does after waking from sleep, but doesn't boot. Pressing the power button again shuts down the machine instantly — no 5-second-hold required.
It could be the RAM, I guess. I have yet to do the diagnosis of removing DIMM pairs one-by-one to see if something is the problem.
Any advice you can offer is great. Thanks

There are LEDs adjacent to the RAM positions that, when lit, indicate a bad DIMM.
The side door is not interlocked, and there are no hazardous Voltages available to your unaided fingers, but components may be HOT.
A Bad DIMM will not preclude Booting. Your Mac will note the defect and attempt to boot without that DIMM. And 2009 DIMMs are independent, so losing one does not take out any others.

  • Mac Pro won't start

I recently set up 4 accounts (+ Administrator) on our new Mac Pro. All accounts have admin rights. While working in FCP I found I didn't have read & write access on anything. I started changing the permissions 1 folder at a time as needed. Then realised I could change permissions on the drive and add to all subfolders. I did it on the Media drive (Raid) then on the System drive. On the Media drive icon a lock appeared and all my media in FCP went offline. I logged out and was going to log back in as Administrator to see if I could reset everything from there. I had to step out so I shut down the system and when I returned it wouldn't boot back up. It hangs on the screen with the apple and spinning thing under it. It's spinning but nothing is happening past that. I tried resetting PRam and safe booting. Not working. Any ideas? TIA

*When you changed the permissions on the system drive and applied to subfolder you changed the system drive to the point where it will no longer boot. You are probably going to have to install the system again.
    Do you have a backup?

  • My Mac Pro won't start up, fans blowing hard.

    Hi,
I bought a secondhand Mac Pro 1,1 - dual core 2,66 Ghz a few months ago.
The company I bought it from put an ATI Radeon 5770 HD and a 150 GB SSD in it.
It ran completely fine untill yesterday afternoon.
I needed some extra storage space for my files, so I opened up my broken iMac G4, unattached the hard drive.
    This is what happened:
I shut down my Mac Pro,
with all the cables attached I moved the Mac over,
I opened it up, put in the extra hard drive in bay 3 (power chord still attached), closed it and tried to power it on.
The graphics card's fan began to blow immediately.
I heard no startup chime. Ten seconds later the main fan began to blow.
There was no video output, the screen stayed on stand-by.
The Diagnostic leds show only 'trickled', no other leds.
I searched alot on the internet for a solution, and tried all the resets and solutions I could find.
A brief list of what I've tried:
    -pram reset
    -smc reset (manually and automatically)
    -boot without graphics card
    -boot without RAM
    -boot without cd-drives
    -boot without harddisks
-I pulled all elements out (graphics card, ram, power supply, HD's, cd-drives) to check for broken or loose connectors.
    Nothing worked so far.
What I did find, are some damaged power cords from my cd-drives:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/75710783@N02/8389915636/sizes/o/in/photostream/
Could this be the thing that started this problem?
And if not, what could possibly be wrong?

The existing breaks in the power leads for the Optical drives should not cause this problem when the optical drives are disconnected, provided they are not shorted to something else.
But if, at some time, they shorted out, it could have confused or damaged the power supply.
    First, reset everything:
    Remove AC power.
Press and hold the power-on button for a quarter minute (this drains the capacitors).
    Wait a quarter minute more.
    Restore the AC power cord.
    Wait a quarter minute more.
    Attempt to start up again.
To check for damage, measure the DC Voltages at a Molex connector (such as the one that is not damaged). You should find a bit above 5 Volts on one of the outside leads (often red wire) and a bit above 12 Volts on the other outer lead (often yellow wire). This should be relative to either/both inner wires (often black wire) or any other black wire, or the frame.
( If you do not already have one, a perfectly serviceable digital multi-meter for this purpose can now be had for as little as US$10, and does not require a degree in rocket science to measure DC Voltages. More money buys a higher-quality instrument with additional precision that is simply not necessary, but not an impediment)

  • Installed Logic Express 8, now my Mac Pro won't start

I got a brand new Mac Pro about a week ago. It appeared to work fine until last night. I powered it on, installed a brand new copy of Logic Express 8 on it, shut it down, and now the Mac Pro can't finish starting up (stays forever on the gray screen with the apple and the progress indicator).
Has anyone experienced a similar problem caused by Logic, or is it just a coincidence?
(The complicating factor is that the very first thing I did when I got the Mac Pro was to install M-Audio's driver for the ProjectMix I/O. This is the only driver I've added. It's not officially supported on Leopard. But it didn't affect the Mac's ability to boot for the first week, so that would seem to put it in the clear.)

  • HELP Please, Mac Pro won't start up

Hi can anyone please help me??? Our power went out while my husband was out of town and HIS Mac Pro is just sitting there with the grey screen with the apple on it and the progress wheel spinning, it has been this way for over 2 days now and I am scared to death to shut it off or try to restart it!
    Any suggestions??

    1. Buy him an APC UPS 1500VA so power outage, brown outs etc are a thing of the past.
    2. Kill it for now.
    3. Make sure there are bootable backup clones - SuperDuper or Carbon Copy or another clone program.
    4. Install OS X to a small 20GB partition to repair the main system.
    5. Invest in 3rd party disk repair maintenance if you haven't already.

You/he are facing a corrupt disk directory that can't be fixed automatically and don't use the drive as is, work from another hard drive, which is why you want to install and have bootable backups, and maybe a drive volume to recover and/or backup to.
This Cyberpower is what I use, replaced the APC units.
