My Macbook all of a sudden can't open Skype, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage. I have done research and read that it has something to do with malware and viruses. Please help I feel like I have tried everything!

This started a few days ago, when I noticed skype would not open and keeps quitting unexpectingly. Now it's all of my microsoft office programs. I have read horrible things on the internet about creeps building some sort of 'backdoor' through Mircosoft Word and are now able to access my macbook. I want to feel safe again and I want to be able to use skype again. I think I will delete Microsoft office until I find/can afford a better version.
I have tried deleting and re-installing the programs, PRAM-ing my mac, doing the utilities organizing thing, and I downloaded 4 different scanners (Cleanmymac, VirusBarrier Express, Bitdefender Virus Scanner, and ClamXav) to help get rid of this and only one scanner found a small file that was harmful. I need some advice PLEASE!
Thank you for your time!

Thanks MadMac0 I followed the instructions in Terminal for the link you sent and all my programs open again!
Sorry I'm just getting to this now, but a lot going on today in this front. There is now a "K" version of Flashback and perhaps more going on.
A couple of considerations you need to be aware of.
It's clear from the results of your testing that the reason you were infected is because your Java is out of date, so it's important that you keep all your software up-to-date going forward.
But even that won't protect you from this new "K" version as Apple has not released the patch to it yet, so I encourage you to disable Java in all your browsers and consider doing so for everything by opening Java Preferences (located in /Applications/Utilities/) and unchecking the box next to "J2SE 6.0" and any other box that might be checked. If you find that some application(s) you need must use Java, then you should enable it only to run that application(s).
We cannot be certain that what you did totally killed the Trojan, so your best bet would be to restore your Mac back to where it was before you were infected using TimeMachine. If you don't have a TimeMachine backup or cannot determine the date of infection, then your safest solution is this one:
Courtesy of Linc Davis:
I suggest you take the following steps immediately:
1. Back up all data to at least two different devices, if you haven't already done so.
2. Boot from your recovery partition (if running Mac OS X 10.7 or later) or your installation disc (if running an earlier version of the Mac OS), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup drive. This action will destroy all data on the drive, so you must be sure of your backups.
3. Install the Mac OS.
4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process to create an account. Don’t import anything from your backups at this stage.
5. If running Mac OS X 10.6.x or earlier, run Software Update.
6. Restore the contents of all the top-level subfolders of your home folder except “Library” from the most recent backup. You can also restore the files in the Library folder, but don’t restore any of its subfolders; only the files contained in those folders, and only if they’re visible in the Finder. Don’t restore any hidden files or folders, no matter where they are.
7. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in Safari’s preferences, and leave it disabled until you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, including all available updates. The Java web plugin is unsafe to use under older versions of the Mac OS. Note: I’m not referring to JavaScript, which is unrelated to Java, despite the similarity in the names.
8. Change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Take this step only after you’ve secured your system in the preceding steps, not before.
9. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated. If you use any third-party web browsers under Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in their preferences, as you did with Safari in step 7.
Of course, as of this morning you should follow my instructions for disabling Java and ignore his, at least until Apple gets that Java patch out.
Pay particular attention to Step 8 no matter what you decide to do.

This is on an iPad, correct? Are you sure you have a network connection? Is your iPad Wifi or Wifi & 3G? I know these might seem like dumb questions, but we've got to narrow it down to get a solution. If you're absolutely positive you have an active network connection we can move on to other things.

    souvikfromKolkata,
you’ll know as soon as the rest of us do if Apple decide to produce a new non-Retina model. My guess would be that they won’t do so, but that’s only a guess.
With Internet, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint representing your main usage, either a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air would be suitable for you.

  • I cannot open PDF files since installing Firefox 4. Have tried everything. Help.

I installed Firefox 4, and now I cannot open PDF files. I have tried everything, including disabling PDF download, re-installing Adobe Reader, etc etc. Nothing seems to work.

I was under the impression Foxit was a pdf viewer rather than an addon for Firefox, but maybe there is more than one application with a similar name.
I did not notice mention of foxit in the help, but add-ons are not always mentioned.

  • Randomly my macbook wont connect to the wifi in my apt except for one area. I have tried everything. Help?

My mac wont connect to the wifi in my apt. it will connect to other networks elsewhere just fine, however. All my other devices still connect anywhere in the apt. Help?

The apt is very small. But i ran istumble and it said the router was giving around 64% and it appears as though no one around is using the same channel as us. Either way, if other comps can pick up on the signal, why isnt mine all of a sudden?

  • Suddenly can't open MS Word 2013 attachment by clicking on it.

When I try to click on an attachment that is a Word document, Word 2013 will try to open, but then says it has encountered an error and needs to close. There is an option to repair, but that doesn't work. This has never happened before and I don't believe that I've changed any settings. Furthermore, I can open Word attachments just fine when they come over my gmail and I can pull up any Word document that I have saved on my computer. Therefore, I don't think it's a problem with MS Word. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really like this email program. I'm running Windows 8.1 if that means anything.

I appreciate your thoughts. What doesn't make sense is that it worked fine before and I haven't made any changes to my anti-virus program. Now, I'm having an additional problem with the program hanging up every time I write an email. I tried experimenting with safe mode and I still have the same problem. I have a couple of add ons. Do you think that could be the problem?

  • Help! Youcam, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Adobe Reader all not working in U310

Using a U310 ideapad with Windows 7 bought one year ago - warranty just expired of course!!
5 days ago I tried to pull up and excel spreadsheet from an e-mail and got an error message that there was not enough memory to do so.
Afterward, I tried to open word and it simply grayed out with a message box saying it was not working - it would try to fix the problem and then it just disappeared.  The same thing continues to happen.
I tried to open a PDF with Adobe Reader and it, too, crashed.  I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, stopped it from coming up in protected mode and now it doesn't crash but I cannot edit any pdf with it and the tools box no longer works at all - a small circle spins in it for a couple of seconds, then fades to gray.
My youcam will not turn on at all - when I click on the youcam icon, the cursor spins for a couple of seconds, then returns to an arrow and the youcam doesn't come on.
So, after experiencing all these things, I figured I'd try the tried-and-true method of rebooting my laptop.  When the laptop restarted, before allowing me to enter my password, the error message "verifyhost.exe - application error unable to start correctly Oxc000007b" came up.  I x'd out of that, entered password, then 2 other errors came up "lenovoreg.exe" and SACpl.exe
After working on this for hours, I'm really at a loss as to what it could be.  Does anyone have any idea?   It's unbelievable to me that this has happened on a new laptop that basically just sits on my desk - I don't travel with it and don't do much more than email and word processing on it!  I have no games and very little else even downloaded!

Download this, install, update and try to scan your hdd for malware.

I just downloaded Lion. Now my mac tells I can't open the previously ok microsoft powerpoint or  microsoft word.
How can I get similar programmes and
How can I open all the  data I have on powerpoint presentetaions or on word?
    Pleas can anybody help,
    with many thanks

    Hello,
I ran into the same issue today.  I upgraded to Lion and my MS Office 2004 wouldn't work.  As QuicktimeKirk said, that version was built for the PowerPC chip, not the current Intel chips.  If you want to stay with MS-Office, there is no work around.  You'll have to upgrade.
My solution was to buy MS-Office Mac Home and Student 2011 - Family Pack from Amazon.com.
I chose the download version and paid $99.82.  Here's the link:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004E9SKBO/ref=oh_o00_d_i00_details
I downloaded the file (~900MB) this afternoon and installed the software.  No issues with the install.  Make sure you print or screen print a copy of the license key.
As a side note, my old version of Quicken 2007 also wouldn't work and I had to upgrade my old version of Parallels as well.
        I hope this helps.

  • Something is wrong with my vision:M, please help

my mom recently bought me a blue zen as a present from amazon.com, it was around november 27,2006 and it worked just fine, but just today it started to act weird. It froze while i was listening to music, so i reset it. right now its stuck on recovery mode and when i try to clean it up, format it or reload the firmware, it says that "harddisk Problem." I cant seem to fix the probelm no matter how many times i try to reboot the thing. Does this mean that i have to buy a new one becuase i dont understand how this "warranty" thing is working. can someone please help me becuase i actually grew attached to my zen and it's killing me becuase i cant use it.

    . my zen froze
    2. i put it in recovery mode by pressing the reset button
    3. i try to format and reload the firmware but it keeps saying "Harddisk problem" everytime. i cant seem to do anything from there

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd Gen not recognized. I feel like I've tried everything. Help.

iPod Shuffle 2G is not recognized by my 2013 MacBook Air. It is not viewable anywhere. I am getting the blinking orange light.
iTunes is up to date & has been reinstalled.
I have restored the iPod according to the instructions I have seen in similar threads.
Tried plugging into a USB hub with its own power source.
Shuffle will charge in USB wall plug & play music.
I am using the original USB dock that it came with it.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    If you do
Apple Menu -> About This Mac -> More Info -> System Report
to run System Information (or System Profiler), does the "iPod" appear as a connected device under
    Hardware -> USB
Try doing the above with the shuffle connected directly AND using the power USB hub you mentioned.
Have you tried connecting something else to that USB port, to confirm it is working properly?  Preferably, it should be something similar, like a USB flash drive or port-powered external drive (data storage devices that get power from the USB port).
Two other related tests...  Create a new user account in System Preferences Users & Groups pane.  The new user account can be Standard or Admin.  Log out and log in to the new user account (do not use Fast User Switching).  In the new user account, run iTunes and connect the shuffle.
And the other test.  Start up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Connect the shuffle while started up in safe mode, to see if it appears anywhere.  These two test are to see if you have a process running when you start up normally, that interferes with the iPod being recognized.

  • Macbook Pro keeps going to Mac OS X Utilities on start-up and can't do anything to get past it. I have tried everything.. even installing Mac OS X Lion again and after 6 hours of loading it said it couldn't load! Please help!?

    ..

This worked amazingly!! Thanks for the post awvik360!
I was able to access the internal hard drive and perform a permissions fix through disk utility and re-apply the OS X 10.5.6 combo update on a totally debilitated machine (Mac Pro early 08).
    Some clarification though:
    {{ I used a MacBook Pro instead of USB/ExternalHD to run a working copy of OS X. }}
~ Just start up the healthy OS X (laptop) in target disk mode (hold 't' key while it powers up)
~ Connect it to the impaired Mac with the highest speed cable available (fire800>fire400>USB)
~ Start up the impaired Mac while holding the alt/option key to select the boot drive.
~ Select the connected OS X (laptop hard disk) and start er up.
~ Run disk utility and you can now use the Fix Permissions option on the impaired Mac's internal hard drive.
~ Run the OS X Combo Update (or presumably other offending update/program) and make sure to change the destination to the internal disk of the impaired Mac
~ Shut down, unplug target disk, start up, and you should be good to go.
I was in some kind of uber-kernel panic and could not start up in safe mode OR from the installation disc, and this worked! Definitely a good emergency procedure to have in your back pocket.
Note: ...target disk pairing must be in this direction. I tried setting up the impaired Mac as target and connecting it to running laptop, and it let me run the install fine, but it didn't fix the problem...must be something with permissions that the impaired Mac needs to install to itself, even if the OS is running on another disk/machine.

  • I'm English but live in Germany.I have version 3.6, but cannot get Google to load in English. It see's my IP address and opens the German version. I think I have tried everything, nothing works. Can somebody help

I have set www.google.com as my home address, this always opens the German website, but at least there is a link to Google.com. If I open any other page before changing, it is always the German version, and there is no way to change it.
I don't have this problem with Explorer 8
    Any ideas?
    Regards

It is not the solution for me. I have a second pc witrh FireFox 3.6plus running on Windows XP service pack 3 This works fine, I get Google in English as normal.
The problem is with my Windows 7 pc, as the Google setup is the same, it must be something local.
