My new T400 & three recent problems that I suffered

My T400 was delivered about a week ago. I am not sure how to contact support.
TYPE: 7417-CTO
1) When I started it for the very first time, it took me straight to the screen: "Your computer was not properly shut down; Please choose one of the options". Then I started it normally. It should not start like this. Correct?
Used Think vantage updates & after that neither my finger print reader is working nor is my recovery.
I get the following messages:
The file S:\Preboot\recovery\nls required by this program cannot be found
When I try to use "Rescue & Recovery" in bios, it says "Recovery function has been removed from this system"
After using think vantage software updates, Finger print sensor is not working.
What to do? Expect a miracle?
Probably I will need RECOVERY DVDs/CDs. Windows is VISTA ULTIMATE 32 Bit operating system.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

Hello Dr. Khan,
first I would suggest to burn your R&R disks, you´ll need 7cd or 3  DVD´s.
It seems System Updater have updated your fingerprint software and R&R so both is unavailible for you.
There is a long way, to uninstall R&R and install the new versions, or simply use recovery media and
restore system to factory state. But you should safe your c:\SWTools folder, there are your needed drivers.
Then let System Updater only install the other software, but no BIOS, R&R and CSS.
Then you´ll get a new system in 2h, other method is 4-6h.
Regards
Andreas

  • Three serious problems that didn't exist on 8.0

I can't see the double arrow that is black on a black background. In 8.0 I could change the surrounding background in the Org screen to lighter in the preference/file section. That is now missing and I have to slide my cursor blindly to look for a flash that shows the pull down menu. My monitor is properly calibrated. Please bring back that option.
Had ALL versions of photshop album the elements so I know the program well. Running this on vista...8.0 uninstalled.
8.0 allowed you to make albums with visible images in the album but invisible in the main thumbnail window. This sped up the thumbnail loading time. 9.0 seems to make the images invisible in both the new album as well as the main window. This doesn't make sense. Please allow for a cleaner main thumbnail view . If all the pics are always there it loads to slowly.
Like others I spent hours tring to get media that was flawless o 8.0.

Sorry for the lateness of the reply here... I thought this post had been removed.
Even though it was a few months ago, I'd like to share my story... Another example of amazing Apple Customer Service.
In the midst of my problems I sent an email to Steve Jobs. On a Saturday... Two hours later an Apple representative from Texas contacted me "on behalf of Mr. Jobs."
Keep in mind that this was in the midst of "Antennae Gate"...
Instead of returning the phone to the Apple Store, they requested that I hold on to it until a technician could meet with me. They flew a technician from California to my office in Cincinnati to take readings and measure reception.
Nothing unusual was detected... After some more testing it was determined that it was just a defective unit. I went to the Apple store and had a brand new phone in about 10 minutes.
From start to finish, Apple did an unbelievable job responding to my problem. In fact, I mentioned this to Toyota. I asked them how is it possible that Apple treats a customer of a $300 phone far more impressively than Toyota treats a customer of a $30,000 car? That statement must have hit home because Toyota ended up coming around and resolving my issues.
I came away immensely impressed with Apple. A real example of a company going above and beyond what "normal" companies would have done.

  • Hi, I'm new here with a problem that's getting the...

I use a programme called mIRC to send [ that's the problem ] and recieve picture's.
I can connect with the peer's and have no trouble recieving, but when I try to send my contribution I can in fact connect but the transfer stalls every 15% like clockwork. I have Port Forwrd installed and have forwarded the appropiate ports as listed in the programme options. I have also unblocked the prog from firewall and have forwarded the ports in Home hub Manager.
BT HomeHub 2-RQPG [the black one] I really am at a loss as to why the transfer stalls on such a regular and almost uniform basis. Can you give any help. I have no issues with email or attachments.
I have been with BT since dial up in the 14.4 days. Loyal customer.

    Hi Trailertrash,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Can you confirm if you’ve tried a different hub / router? If so, is the fault still apparent?
Have you tried a different pc or other device that can use mIRC? On you Hub. This might prove whether the fault is pc or network based.
Have you tried putting his pc in the DMZ?
Give us as much information as possible and I’m sure we’ll be able to help.
    Cheers

The only option I'm being given is to create an lCloud account.

The last thing you want is a second iCloud account. Try logging out and back in in System Preferences. If that doesn't work, I'd get AppleCare on the line.

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • A series of recent problems with new MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I bought a new MacBook Pro last May.  The spec is:
    Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
I installed Yosemite in November (I think) and the Mac has been giving problems ever since.  I'm not sure whether the problems are related to this installation, but I did not change anything else prior to the problems starting.
When I boot up my Mac, a message appears: "Finder was not shut down correctly. Reopen all windows from last session?"
This is inaccurate since I shut down the Mac correctly every evening.
Safari used to load pages quickly, but now when I first open it, it takes about a minute to open a page.  Once it's running, it takes approximately 10 seconds to load a page.  The spinning beachball appears regularly and Safari often quits.
Mail Rules are also operating differently.  Whenever I created a new rule, prior to November, the rule would automatically have the name Rule [last rule + 1} i.e. if the last rule I created was Rule 41, the new rule would be called Rule 42.  However, now all rules are called Rule 2 (I know that I can change this).  This isn't a huge issue, I'm just mentioning it in case it helps to solve the problem.
Another occasional problem that has happened approximately three times is that applications freeze.  I can still move the cursor around the screen but I cannot click on anything or take an action within an application.
I would be grateful if you could advise me on this, please.
    Many thanks,
    F.

Your computer is insured for one year from date of purchase. You paid for that coverage.
If at all possible take your computer to an Apple store and have a "genius" look at it.
You should make an appointment: google "Apple genius bar appointment" and proceed from there.

I recently upgraded to Yosemite. Yesterday when I opened up the iPhoto (which I have it in my external drive due to the size of file) I get the message that it is not compatible with the new system(or something like that) and ask me to upgrade so I did. Then another message pops ups and asked for rebuilding the Thumbnails. So I clicked rebuild. Next it asked me to do one of three things(I can't remember all of them) so I chose the last one which is to download a photo to iPhoto. Now I only have that photo I downloaded in iPhoto file but not the rest of my pictures. The iPhoto library which is stored in my EHD shows it has 349GB but it only show one thumbnail of the last picture I downloaded after the rebuild process. What can I do to recover the rest of the file?
    Thanks for your help.

I have the iPad 2 16GB, bought it in August 2011, I worked perfectly but in mid-August 2012 I took her to the store because the microphone did not work reviewed and changed me, but to my surprise that the new iPad had the problem is disconnected WIFI signal I have to be glued to the router, and I did everything he says is supported by the Apple and all other pages and forums regarding this problem is not solved and always disconnects when connected always disconnects again!! passing will be settled as no longer factory warranty although it has neither the three months I renewed new, please help because the investment has been great and I can not use only as "a mirror" I'm waiting a true solution, thanks ....
    Sincerely,
    Catlos

This does help me because I am pondering on wether to buy an airport extreme to solve my ipad 2 connection woes.  I have an extremely old router dLink 524....but I have NEVER had any problems with it at all ever.  My xbox connected great to it and netflix ran flawless through my xbox.....now I have an ipad2 and an apple tv and they are BOTH having horrible connection problems.  I have read most of the forums on how to fix it by changing the settings on my router but since mine is so old I couldn't do some of the suggested solutions.  So here I am debating on whether to spend all this $ on an airport extreme?  I am just hoping that if I go and purchase this, my connectivity issues problems will go away like yours did.  Just wondering if you have ATV as well and if the AE solved its problems?  I have read about AE solving ipad2 wifi problems, I'm just hoping it will solve my ATV as well.
**Glad they didn't "moderate into extinction" your post yet, lol, Thank

Sorry to disappoint you, but this isn't MacWorld.
when I want to write @ I have to press g instead of the @ key
Are you sure you don't have to press ⌥-G (Option-G) to get @?
Anyway, sounds like a keyboard/keyboard layout mismatch.
Go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources. From "Select input methods to use" enable (check) the following
    Keyboard & Character Viewer
    U.S.
    Spanish
    Spanish - ISO
Also enable "Show Input menu in menu bar".
The Input menu should appear to the right of your menu bar, with the icon of a national flag. From this menu, choose "Show Keyboard Viewer". Then compare the layout displayed by Keyboard Viewer with the label on your MBP's keyboard. If it doesn't match, choose a different layout from the Input menu.
My suspicion is that you're using a US keyboard with a Spanish keyboard layout, hence the difference you noted.

First try to resolve #2 by:
    See
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Featurs appin the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - New cable and different USB port
    - Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause

    - Try on another computer to help determine if computer or iPod problem
If you can resolve #1 and still get same message for #1 then you have to restore the iPod like the message says.

  • Recent problems occurring with new iPod Nanos as well?

Are the recent problems associated with the iPod firmware version 1.2 occurring with brand new Nanos, or are they only occurring with Nanos that were running previous versions that have been updated to the new version? I've been considering buying a Nano, but may reconsider if the problems are happening with new ones as well.

I bought a 2GB iPod nano over the weekend. It works great, as long as I don't try to put more than 215 songs on it. iTunes crashes and freezes my iPod every time I try to fill it up more than half way. Every crash requires a hard shut down on my mac and restoration of the iPod.

  • Is there going to be a new update to 2.0 that fixes these problems? When?

Hi, as my problems are iPod AND iTunes based, am posting question in both forums.
I have a few problems that I need addressing as soon as possible, as day to day use of my iPod has got incredibly aggravating.
When I access iTunes, I am immediately prompted to put my password in (for Apple id). It doesn't store it so if I want to purchase something, I have to put in my Apple id and password. If I've just done something in the iTunes store like purchasing something, then go to look at my account, I need to type in my password again. If I buy something, then try and buy something straight after that, I need to type in my password again. You get the idea.
Another iTunes issue - it's **** slow at the moment and I know it's not my internet speed. iTunes was fine before the 7.7 update, but now I experience very slow loading times, lots of errors with connecting to the store, downloads having errors etc. More often than not, downloads are at a speed like 3kbps. After many many attempts, I succeeded in downloading and reinstalling the 2.0 update, for reasons I will get to. I can't begin to count the number of times that failed before I succeeded.
Backing up - every time I connect my iPod, it backs up. Synching takes a long time. Synching and installing apps takes ages, it even takes ages to synch Outlook info. I know it's not my USB because other media players are fine.
    The device itself:
    - bootup time is very long. Several minutes.
    - accessing settings, Notes, contacts, clock etc is slower than before.
    - freezing. A couple of days ago, it froze in settings. I attempted to turn off, which it couldn't do. I rebooted it, which worked, but the black screen with the white apple logo was on the screen for about ten minutes before the device turned on again.
    - battery drainage is mysteriously quicker since the update installed.
I'm not happy and would like to know a projected release date for an update to fix all these problems, which I know I'm not alone in.

The best advice I can offer for your iTunes problems is to try creating a new test user on your computer. Check to see if iTunes behaves the same way in the new user.
As for your iPod issues, you should try restoring your iPod via iTunes, erasing all software and content components on the device. Once the device is restored, do not restore from backup and do not sync any of your content.
You mentioned that you use Notes and Contacts. You want to make sure that you email yourself your notes from the application and assure that you've got all your contacts synced with your computer.
Use the iPod in its restored state for a few hours. If you notice a favorable difference, begin to start syncing your content back over.
    Good luck!
