My Problems with Netboot, PPC iMacG5, 10.5.6, Leopard Server-Solved

Several contributors steps helped me out, in this archived thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1649502
I have added my own steps, for record, as I could not add to the archived thread.
Problem: OSX 10.5.6 Server, set to an "Octopus" configuration,
( Standalone server, hooked into a Cisco 2950 Switch, switch manages DHCP, keeps all traffic localized)
Hooked iMac G5 clients into switch. Set Server to netboot a PPC Leopard 10.5.6
image made from same iMac G5 client. Hooked six iMac G5's into the switch,
one fired off successfully, five all failed, going to Kernel Panic after first one
kicked off successfully. Tested scenario with 3 Intel MacBooks imaging
an intel MB 10.5.6 image, same server and switch, all deployed successfully.
Following a combination of Brian Neeson's and Kellefson's Steps:
1. Stop Netboot Service on Server.
2. Disable Netboot Shares, save changes
3. Launch Activity Monitor, stop nfsd service. ( Force Quit) It auto starts again
4. Re-enable Netboot Shares
5. Start Netboot Service, select PPC Image, Set to PPC Achitecture only, save changes
6. Reboot Leopard Server.
Issue is now resolved, and images deploy successfully, testing 2 PPC iMac G5s without fail.
Posting this so I can set a subscription to it ( so I can find it faster, I cannot set
a subscription to the archived post) and to help others with same issue.

Ok, I finally had some time to come back to this
and try out a few things.
One of the things that kept perplexing me about this was that only
PPC White iMac G5's, 1.6ghz models, were constantly affected by this issue.
I tried it looking at it from the server end: Recreated the Netboot NFS share point,
recreated the 10.5.6 image as a gold master, made sure all nbi's were in their proper
locales.
I tried looking at it from the iMac itself: swapping out Hard drives, Logic Boards,
Zappring PRAM, replacing and swapping out Ram, etc.
Finally after stepping away from it for a week to look at
InstaDMG, it dawned on me......
Josh, ( I believe) in his webinar, said that to build your
image using instaDMG, you should use Leopard 10.5 Retail disc as the
base of choice, and then put everything in as a package deployment
on top of that.
+So that got me to thinking, what if 10.5.6 was problematic for deployment,+
+but not so for updating the system in general?+
That got me to remembering that that wouldn't be the first time Apple
has released an update that screwed up NetInstalling
( 10.5.2, 10.4.10, and 10.3.4 come to mind).
*So I then decided to try a new test:*
I went back to a good known working no problems White iMac G5 PPC 1.6ghz machine,
wiped the HD, and installed 10.5.0 on it, and then put all my apps back on it.
I then updated every app and patched the Apple essentials ( Quicktime, Airport0
but did not update the OS.
I then Target FW'd it to my Xserve, and used Apple's SIU to create the image.
Then, I deployed it back to three iMacs in a row through the network.
Success! no KPs and the iMacs all flawlessly deployed.
I then tried another set of three, and success again....all three had no KP
at booting into Netinstall, and all three deployed successfully.
*So I believe that I have fixed my issue!*
My next test is to create an image that will post deploy the 10.5.6 combo update
to the iMacs after the 10.5.0 image is deployed, but even if I run into
problems there, My workaround will be just to deploy 10.5.0, and then
ARD out 10.5.6 combo after the machines have restarted and booted successfully.

This message is always in the log. We stop the volume, and start cvfsck -wv, but dont have anything, how fix it??
    - Another problem is with AFP service, suddenly the service stop, and the error is :

-What of the meaning of (ipc/send) invalid port right??.
    And the last error is:

This server is the open directory Master and metadata controller of xsan2, but we have another server that is open directory replica and metadata controller of xsan2. The fisrt server have too many errors with afp, the service stop and the server is dead, and you must restart via terminal with the command sudo reboot. • Are there any problems with a "required Extended Protection" / "Always On" / "Livelink Server" combination?

    Hello,
we have a Livelink  Server database running with two replicas on two nodes as Always On Group, both instances running extended protection in "allowed" mode.
Our company security policy demands setting the extended protection to "required".
Are there any known problems with a "required Extended Protection" / "Always On" / "Livelink Server" combination?
    Environment:
    OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise X64 SP1
    DB: SQL Server 2012 (11.0.5556.0)
    Thx & BR
    Achim

    Hi Achim,
According to my knowledge, there are no known problems with a "required Extended Protection" / "Always On" / "Livelink Server" combination.
Extended Protection helps to prevent an authentication relay attack by using service binding and channel binding. We need to note that when Extended Protection is set to
Required, only connections from protected applications on protected operating systems are accepted. This setting is the most secure but connections from operating systems or applications that do not support Extended Protection will not be able
to connect to SQL Server. For more details, please review the following article.

  • Problem with stop PPC G5 Dual 2GB

Hi, i m new user. I have a problem with Dual G5 2,0GB. I dont know why my mac when do STOP at apple menu, it die. Dont start again. I tryed to reinstall OSX 10.5 and 10.5.6 But it does the same thing. There is somebody can help me what i do????? Thanks

Are you saying you can get it to boot from the install disks but not the Hard drive?
Startup holding down the "C" key on the keyboard. Get to the Utilities folder and use Disk Utilities on the hard drive. Let it fix what ever it finds. Then run permission repair from Disk Utilities. Then go to the install screen (it will come up when you quit disk utilities.
    Then
!) If you have nothing on the Hard drive: do a clean install of the system software. Use the option that writes zeroes on the disk as it's formatting (it will block out any bad sectors) then complete the install.
    2) If you have anything on the disk back it up to an external disk if you can. Instead of doing a clean install try an archive and install.

Above is working fine for the GUI installed on my PC, but not throgh the Citrix server.
Can any body have idea on above mentined?

I understand that you're trying to download the file to a local computer  through Citrix. In this case you need autorizations in Citrix for your user ( CItrix user)

  • Problems with Dock in Mac OS 10.5 Leopard on iMac.

I have a friend with a strange problem in the Dock. Sometimes by just launching any kind of application, the Dock becomes completely transparent and the icons in the Dock disappear when the mouse pointer is moved above. The only way to get back the good Dock is to restart the computer or close the user session.
The computer is the last iMac aluminium 20-inch, 2GHz Core2Duo, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT, Mac OS 10.5.4.
    You can see here:
    http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/1429/image2nb4.jpg
The computer is totally clean. No software or hack for Dock modifications has been installed!!
Personally, I have a Power Mac G5 and a MacBook pro Santa Rosa running Leopard, and I have never got this problem with the Dock. Then, it seems that this Dock problem is specific to iMac computer.
I would want to have feelings from other iMac users.
    Thanks!

If it happens in a new user you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Problems with browsing on Safari and Firefox since Leopard upgrade ??

Ever since I upgraded to Leopard, I am experiencing consistent problems while browsing. Both Firefox and Safari stall when I click on links or try to load pages. The browsers just appears dead and the loading icons just stall. Firefox is much worse than Safari with every 3rd or 4th click causing a stall. I have to wait about a minute before the click is recognized and the page is loaded.
I thought it might be my airport connect but I have other Windows comps on the same network and they don't have the problem.
I haven't seen any thread in the Safari discussions about this and can't find anything on the net about it either.
Anyone know what the problem might be?
    Safari 3.1.1
    Firefox 2.0.0.14
    Leaopard 10.5.2

There were no error messages in the console for the stalling. However after I plugged the ethernet cable into the Imac, the problem seems to have gone away.
This is good but how can I fix the problem with my airport wireless connection ?

  • Problems with RDP/RDC from Mac OSX to Windows Server 2008 on External IP

We have a customer that is using Mac and Microsoft's RDC for Mac to their servers.
They've just upgraded from Windows Server 2003 to 2008 and can't connect through RDP to their TS server on external IP.
Their servers is not in any domain and it work for them to connect to another Windows Server 2008 that is located in their office when they use internal IP.
The problem is that when using RDC to the external IP they get bellow:
"Remote Desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to connect to. This problem can occur if:
The remote computer is running a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista.
The remote computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer.
Contact your network administrator or the owner of the remote computer for assistance."
From here they can choose "Connect" as they did on the Server 2003 but now they get: "Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to.Try reconnecting to the Windows-based computer, or contact our administrator."
and is only able to choose "Ok".
I've changed the settings on the "configuration for host server for remote desktop sessions" under General from "RDP-Security Layer" to "Negotiate" and in this case I get a logon windows where i type in all my information click logon. Here I get another
error message which says something like: (We get it in Swedish). "Connection to the windows-based computer broke since there was a problem associated with the licensificationprotocol... Try to connect again" Where I can choose "Cansel" or "reconect"
but it just keeps poping up if i chose reconnect.
I've tried all settings in the TS server and there is not much to change on the RDP client. We have installed the server certificate on the Mac client but it didn't help.
We've also tried with CoRD and it works fine as RDP from a normal Windows based computer.
The only solution I've found on google is to use CoRD instead but we got problems with that connection since it keep crasching on our computer.
In my eyes the problem is on the security requirements that the RDC for Mac needs but I can't find any inforamtion on MS sites about it.
Greatfull for all tips and trix!

I too was having the problem same as everyone else. However, for me the problem all started when I replaced my SSL certificate that was used/selected in the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility, connections, RDP-TCP Properties.  The security
layer is negotiate and the certificate is the one selected on that screen.  It was not licensing related.
The certificate had expired and I didn't believe I needed it.  But turns out I did, so I had to generate and validate a new one using GoDaddy (though they specifically were not part of the problem).  As my Terminal Servers (Remote desktop servers)
do not have IIS installed, I was a bit stumped on how to create a new certificate request.   I finally found some instructions on how to create a certificate request using the MMC snap-in, advanced operations, create custom request. The template
chosen was "legacy key", and without boring the rest of the details that part was the root cause of my problem.  The legacy key was not able to be processed correctly by the Mac RDC client. Neither the official 2.1.1 client or the 2.1.2 download.
The Terminal Server system event log was showing the following two errors, 36874 and 36888.  The first one contained the best details and said: "An TLS 1.0 connection request was received from a remote client application, but none of the cipher suites
supported by the client application are supported by the server. The SSL connection request has failed."  Upon searching the internet for that, I found this page which described the legacy key problem:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/3a2d2eec-000d-432a-abd7-6b965268c671
So, my solution most familiar to me was to use IIS and create the SSL certificate request, process that with my 3rd party CA, export the certificate with private key and then import that certificate into all of my terminal servers.  Then using the session
host configuration tool, pick the new certificate and the problem was now solved.

    Hi all,
    I've problem with X11 on os x 10.6.2.

Yes this look like a bug as old as 10.4 .
Keep in mind that X11 wasn't made for mobile users .
What's the best way to solve the problem ?
below you find the first lines of my .xinitrc
I havn't been able to find a definite fix to this problem.
Nonetheless I have a workaround which avoid me to have
to restart my X11 twice a day. I'm a mobile user, I use
many different network locations, and I use X11 full time too.
I created an isolated location named "- isolated" so as to
keep it on top of my Location menu. This location is simply
built by removing all the services "Ethernet", "AirPort"…
Then, when I leave my home, I always switch to my "- isolated" Location.
When I arrive at my office or within a meeting, I switch to the correct
    Location.
I can proceed with my work in progress within X11 applications.
And I can open new X11 applications without any trouble.
When I leave my office I also swith to my "- isolated" location.
If you find any better workaround, please post it.

  • OS X 10.10.2 Server. Having problems with Netboot Image

Hey there guys, it's the first time i'm having to deal with an OS X server.
I've made a Mac Mini into a server, and would like to use it as an Imaging Server for our Company's laptops, which are MB pro's.
I've checked that i've updated the OS on the Mac Mini and the MacBook Pro that i took the image from to the latestth
soo... I made the image from the laptop, got it on the Server and it's in the Library/Netboot/NetbootSP0 folder.
The Server app picks it up, and it's set so that you can install the image on other laptops via Ethernet.
I'm using an apple Ethernet to thunderbolt adapter for the MacBooks
At first i thought i've messed up something with the NetBoot image, so I had to Create another one.
First one got Recognised by the laptops when i try to Boot while pressing [Alt+N], but when it booted that way, nothing happened - it just went to the "Select language screen" that you get when turning it on for the first time.
The second image wouldn't be recognised at all and same thing happens.
I can give you any additional info if required, just ask me.
    Thanks

Without any more detail it looks like you've misconfigured something somewhere? Either the workstation you've used to build the image has somehow not 'taken' properly (don't ask me to explain as it can happen sometimes for no discernible reason) or deploy studio and/or your server (amounts to the same thing) have not been configured properly and/or the network in terms of what the clients use for DNS has not been thought through properly?
It may be none of the above but they are good places to start the debug process.
What we need is what you're basing your private network around in terms of DNS; e.g.: server's fully qualified domain name, does it resolve on both pointers, can your clients resolve it on both pointers, have you configured deply studio's depository correctly and so-on.
You don't need to use alt N. Either use the N key or just use the alt key to select the Boot Disk Manager. If you've valid nbis they'll show up there. DeployStudio's netboot set is just a simple, minimal, network-based bootloader. It's typically not very large. Anywhere from 2-5GB. If your nbis are larger then you've not created what you think you've created.
Hopefully some of the questions I'm asking will start you looking in the right places?

  • Printing problem with Konica Minolta BizHub282 using RDP on Windows Server 2008 R2

    Hello,
I have an office setup as follows:  Local office IP adress scheme 192.168.201.x.  There is a Konica Minolta BizHub 282 printer connected to the 192.168.201.x network as well as around 10 workstations running Windows 7.  There are also about
10 additional teleworkers WHO DO NOT NEED print access to the Minolta 282.  All of their data is on a cloud server.  I have them setup to first connect to the cloud server using a RRAS PPTP VPN and then to start an RDP session to the separate
RDP server.  The Konica Minolta works ??okay?? with the easy print services and until now, we have just dealt with the lack of features and the occasional print job that goes crazy and prints out 400 blank pages (btw, this is usually on Excel) or a job
that cuts off the margins even when you have it set to "fit to page" (this usually happens in Adobe.)  When I originally set this up, I tried loading the native Konica drivers on the server, but there was no joy because I couldn't get it to
work using the native drivers.  The problem at hand is a feature called "account track."  This feature authenticates your print job by using an account code.  If there is no code, the job just disappears.  When I load the native
Konica driver, the ability to turn on this feature is greyed out (see below):
When I use easy print, the codes seem to go through, but as I mentioned earlier, sometimes the print job just goes insane.  After researching this, it seems to me that there are two ways to overcome this if we can't turn off the account track feature:
    1) Overcome the driver problem. I've tried both of their current drivers without success: VXL and Visual Postscript. When I login to RDP, the (redirected) Konica 282 printer is listed, but when I try to print, it fails due to the missing account track code.
I'm hoping that there is a registry hack to turn this feature on by default with the code or a driver version that works with RDP. They have a WHQL driver available, but it didn't work any better. Is there a way to report this issue to the WHQL labs? Maybe
I can light a fire under Konica's rear end and motivate them to fix the driver.
    2) I saw one discussion where the guy installed the printer out in the clouds as a local printer. He seemed to have a site-to-site VPN, not a client-to-site VPN, so this worked.  Is there a way to do something similar when the customer connects to the
VPN through standard "connect to workplace" setup?  I tried pinging the Konica 282 from the server while logged into the VPN, but the printer could not be found.
    3) I considered setting it up as a google cloud print prnter, but that would require everyone to setup a google account and add a layer of complexity.
Anyone else run into this and have a solution?  If not, does anyone have any ideas on a solution or workaround?
    Thanks,
    Jeffery Smith

    Hi Jeffery,
    Thank you for your comment.
Yeah, you can use universal print driver by configuring Remote Desktop Easy print on RDS Server. Install the driver on RDS server. Now to configure Easy print you need to have minimum client RDP 6.1(But suggest you to install RDP 8.1), .Net Framework 3.5 or
    above and RDSH role.
Also under GPO setting need to check below settings.

  • Problems with Harddisk WDC WD1001FALS-40K1B0 under Snow Leopard 10.6.2

    Hello all together,
I'am a User of an IMac Early 2009 as you can see in my Profile,
i bought it with Leopard, everything worked fine. But since i bought my Apple because i became to know about Snow Leopard, i bought that upate also, so now I'am Using 10.6.2 and all the latest firmware, Performance Updates and all that stuff, the Software Updater gave me as well.
    My Problem is the following:
From time to time i end up at booting in the grey screen and see the spinning wheel, for no known reason. Desktop doesn't appear. Always the same things: I boot from the install dvd and go into diskutility and it says: Macintosh HD can't be repaired, please do a new install. Since I'am new to Apple and i switched because i didn't want to waste time about windows configurations nor Linux i choosed Apple because it's well known as Stable, and i readed much articles about Apple working on even more stable system called Snow Leopard, so to my suprise this is not what i wanted: I can't imagine i have to do all 2 or 3 Months a complete reinstall and restore of my (thanks i got a external drive) timemachine backup. And no, it is not connected at bootup, i tried many things, googled around no results that helped me. Disconnected everything from usb at bootup, still. It's also not that i do some hacks or dirty work on the shell (since for now i'am not familar witht this) nor did i install some maybe incompatible software, all i use is mail, safari and iWorks. Yes i did use bootcamp but even on harddisk partitioning without any kind of bootcamp partition it still appears from time to time. This is really bad, especially because i wanted a system that my wife can use 100% safe as well, and she does only know where the Power On Button is, so no way for trying to explain her, how to restore nor to repair things...
Because of my google results i think this is a harddisk hardware issue of my:
WDC WD1001FALS-40K1B0 i already have been at my apple store and got another one (same kind of harddisk) but now again the same issue... I found on the internet articles if this spinning wheel and progress bar appears, it means the os detected some bad harddisk structure or kind of, so what can i do? I did also install the Performance Update which should solve "some harddisk" issues but still the same, now i'am hoping for 10.6.3 to help me maybe. I did the Hardware Diagnostic and also since i own Apple Care Protection Plan i used the Deluxe tool which tested also the complete Hardware but says me also: all is fine, i did even the longer taking Harddisk Structure test, also fine.
At the moment my iMac is at another Apple certified hardware shop and get's tested again, i was thinking if this continues, if i'am able to get a harddisk replacement (same size and technical quality but maybe another manufacturer) and my harddisk doesn't make even any sound that would tell me like slowing down or clicking (meaning its dead) also after fresh install everything works again.
Is this a well known issue?
Some background information on my Hardware:
    iMac9,1 Early 2009
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz
    Geschwindigkeit: 2 x 2GB DDR3 RAM, 1067 MHz
    Harddisk: WDC WD1001FALS-40K1B0
    NVidia MCP79 AHCI
    Boot-ROM-Version: IM91.008D.B08
    Chipsatz-Modell: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130
I'am really thankfull for every help on this.

    HI,
i bought it with Leopard, everything worked fine. But since i bought my Apple because i became to know about Snow Leopard, i bought that upate also, so now I'am Using 10.6.2
If you did not repair disk permissions after upgrading to Snow Leopard v10.6, then do that now.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and *restart your Mac.*
Now try booting from your SL disc and run Disk Utility to see if you can repar the startup disk if necessary. (Applications/Utilities) See if it can repair the disk if in fact it reports errors. If you see this again, " Macintosh HD can't be repaired, please do a new install"... try Safe Mode.
Try Starting up in Safe Mode and run Disk Utility there. S try Safe Mode.
    What is Safe Mode
    Also, try Resetting the PRAM
