My site botched by Google

weird issue here...
When I perform a google search on my site it returns the following result "the sixty crickets chris sahlquist." The problem is that "chris sahlquist" is being added from an unknown source. I haven't entered it on my site, nor do I have any meta tags that include it (if iWeb even uses meta tags) Bottom line is that I don't want "chris sahlquist" in the results, because I want my name to be anonymous (plus the last name is misspelled!)
Yahoo! and Windows Live Search return results like "Dwell on the sixty crickets", "home" and a host of other titles related to the content on my site. All good.
I've searched through my iWeb site files for the string "chris sahlquist" but nothing turns up. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is there an iWeb tweak I can make? Is Google hexing my site with dark magic? Have I been hacked??? and how is that possible?
The site in question is www.sixtycrickets.com
Again, I want to keep my name disassociated from this site (for entertainment purposes) but I'm at a loss for how to do it.
Thanks!

Thanks mwong. Turns out the page you referenced might be the culprit. The owner has removed the link text, so hopefully all will clear up once Google clears its cache.
Given that the issue appears to be coming from a link outside my site, do you think I need to get Google to remove the cached page and get it re-indexed?
C
Interesting problem.
Did your site at any point have 'chris sahlquist' in
the text? If so, you will find google will re-index
it eventually and the 'chris sahlquist' will
disappear.
If you sign up for Google sitemaps, you can get
google to remove a cached page and then get it
re-indexed.

Lastly, does this link provide any clues - it is
linking yours with the incorrect text:

    Hi userwhat,
Your personal data should have been saved, and you can try to follow these steps to fix your problem.
*First, you should report that to the developer of the add-on the troubles that you are experiencing.
    * Then, you can try [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ The Add-on Compatibility Reporter], which allows you to use add-ons that haven't yet been explicitly updated to work with Firefox 5, and lets you report the results of compatibility.
    * For add-ons that do not work with The Add-on Compatibility Reporter, you can still downgrade to the previously maintained version, which is Firefox 3.6 that you can download here: [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]

  • When I click on an Icon on my desktop to take me to a site (such as google) I get a message that it could not find the loaction. Then it goes ahead and opens a Firefox window with the site anyway as if the message never happened.

When I click on an Icon on my desktop to take me to a site (such as Google) I get a message that it could not find the location. Then it goes ahead and opens a Firefox window with the site anyway as if the message never happened. Then when I close the window I see that the message is still there. I have to close it separately. Any suggestions? Oh, and this only happens if Firefox is NOT already active. If I have another Firefox window open when I click on the Icon, it just opens as expected. This message appears no matter which site Icon I select. It did not happen before I upgraded to ver 9.0.

    Hello BassoonPlayer,
Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using.  FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in.  This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly.  By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you.  Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

  • Site structure in google results

Hi there, I would relaly appreciate your help ,not sure what happened but  , the structure of my site is not showing anymore in google results .
Meaning the homepage is showing alone as a first entry, then each item in the navigation is showing as a seperate entry instead of being a sub title under the homepage, as in the screenshot.
I am using a macbook pro, OS X
    safari 6.0.2
    Dreamweaver CS 5.5
Here is the index page: www.roulasorour.com
    Many thanks,

    @piixy,
These are called 'Sitelinks' in Google terminology. Google decides how they cache and display sub-pages as Sitelinks when your main URL is displayed under their Search results. A lot of factors influence this - occurence of your sub-pages, ranking, relevance of content, content updates, etc...
There is no way you can ask Google to add Sitelinks to your main site. However, Google gives you an option to 'Demote' a sitelink if it is irrelevant.
To find out how you could optimize your website's SEO, sign into Google Webmaster Tools - http://www.google.com/webmasters
Once you sign in, you can add & authorize ownership of your domain to start seeing critical data that will help you optimize your ranking.

  • Previously visited sites in a Google search not highlighted on page

I'm referring to the purple highlighting of a previously visited site in a Google page. This isn't working in Safari (3.1.2) any more. It is working with Firefox for Google, and it still works with Safari in the Apple Discussions pages or Open DNS listing, but not on Google. This must be something to do with Safari and Google. I don't see anything relating to this in Google or Safari Preferences. Hope this is only a temporary problem with Safari and Google.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

More information: Safari crashed once last night, and now getting a number of these messages in Console which might be related, since Safari seems to be up when they appear and Google search on this turns up some posts related to Safari behavior :
SyncServer[319] A Sync Server is already running on this computer, exiting process.

  • My MacBook Pro won't load any websites on Safari (except this site, Facebook and Google), Opera, or Mozilla Firefox. I already did the "Reset Safari", restarted the computer half a dozen times, and I can't find this alleged "caches.db" file to delete.

My MacBook Pro won't load any websites on Safari (except this site, Facebook and Google). Opera and Mozilla Firefox won't load any sites whatsoever. I already did the "Reset Safari" several times, restarted the computer half a dozen times, and I can't find this alleged "caches.db" file to delete. I virus scanned the computer with Sophos, Avast, and iAntiVirus and it looks clean.

Is iAntiVirus the best virus protection to use for a MacBook?
The best anti-virus protection is your own common sense, and what you already bought and paid for with your Mac. Third party products such as "iAntiVirus" convey no additional benefit, and as you already determined are very capable of causing trouble.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

    Hi k,
I don't know if it's the same in your OS, but in 10.6.8:
Go to Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access > Keychain Access menu > Keychain First Aid > enter your password > click on Verify > click on Start. If you get a message saying something needs to be repaired, click on Repair > Start and wait for it to finish.

  • Change site name in google

    Hello,
I have published my site trough iweb on my mobile me account. When I look up my site on google it shows "about". How can I change my sites name?

Is the first page of your site named About? If so change the page title to something else in iWeb and republish.
Or, use the free iWeb SEO Tool to give that page a new title that you would want to show up in the google search.
It can access the site on your iDisk, add the title tag to the About page and save it. SEO remember the tags it has assigned to each page of your site so it can be easily reapplied with just one click of the button after any edits and republications are made.

  • How to get a Flash site higher on Google Ranking

Google (and some other search engines have problems crawling
a flash site to obtain a search engine relavence ranking. Anyone
have a good way around this?

That's a tough one. Supposedly the engines can look at text
inside SWFs but that's all a jumble, could be something bad through
ActionScript as far as they know, and there is no way to use the
tried and true HTML tag rules. Metadata is, I understand, pretty
much ignored nowadays (thanks spammers!). Your best bet is some
plain ole HTML text and solid incoming links. If someone knows
    better let them speak.

  • Is there a way make an iWeb site appear on Google?

With other software I know you need code to do that. I was wondering if iBank had some other way to do it since it doesn’t let you add code to websites.

I use iWeb '09 for my company's site (www.inchwormdesign.com), and I have done everything mentioned here. All is good, but you need to do one more thing.
Download the free program called iWeb SEO Tool (http://www.ragesw.com/products/iweb-seo-tool.html), and do the following:
    1. from iWeb, publish site to folder on hardrive (i.e. user-sites-'your site')
    2. open up iWeb SEO Tool
    3. click on 'OPEN WEBSITE' from top left corner of program window
    4. select the entire site folder you published to, and click 'CHOOSE'
    5. now, all the files will appear on the left hand side of the program. You will need to select every .html page that is associated with your site (e.g. if you have a 'HOME' page, then you will have a folder called "HOME FILES" and you'll have just below or above called "HOME.html"). After you have selected a .html from the left, you simply fill in the info on the right side of the program.
    6. after you've finished all pages info, simply select 'PUBLISH', and fill out your FTP settings for your host (this should be the same info you use on iWeb's publishing attributes).
The most important information to fill is the Title Tags & Meta Tags. Be sure you take some time to thoroughly figure out your site's information. All this information is then picked up by Google's spiders and other search engines. The more and more your site pops up around the internet (i.e. visitors, blogs, links, etc.), the more these spiders will detect your tags and will therefore rank your site higher. A lot of this stuff is completely up to you, though. If you don't get visitors and you don't share and network your site, then your rank on search engines will not be very high.
Another very important thing about the iWeb SEO Tool:
    - say you want to make changes to your site and edit pages, etc. as everybody always does, how do you republish the site with all the same tags you added before? Once you've used iWeb SEO Tool, you'll never want to publish via iWeb again, because you'll lose all those very important tags. Luckily the iWeb SEO Tool allows you to do this pretty painlessly.
    1. make changes to site using iWeb
    2. publish site to folder (same folder as before)
    3. open iWeb SEO Tool
    4. open your website in same fashion as before
    5. when your site is loaded, select the button on the right pane called 'RE-APPLY SAVED TAGS'. This will apply all the same information for every page you did previously. If you add or subtract pages, you will have to do some tweaking, and add new information for new pages, but all pages that you've had before will have all the same information applied.
    6. publish site
This is pretty cool, and works really well. It's a perfect complement to iWeb, since iWeb has very limited control when it comes to Search Engine Optimization.
    Hope you find this helpful.
    Cheers,
    jeff

  • Site name on Google

When my site comes up in a Google search, it's name is "Home" rather than the site name. Same is true on the Safari "Window" list once the site is up. How do I correct?

    Hi there,
names/titles of pages are changed in iWeb itself, go to the page and see where "Home" is written in the content of the page (in which textfield). Then type the new name you'd like the page to have. Publish. Visit your site on the net or in folder to see if it changed.
Google will not take up the new name instantly... It really takes quite a long time sometimes until google updates it's entries.
    Regards,
    Cédric

  • When using the google search button my queries are always redirected to another site, and not google as indicated as my preferred search engine.

I have to open up an Internet Explorer browser when I try to to a search for anything. Even though I've selected google as my default search engine, I still get redirected to some random site. It's useless. I would like to use Firefox all the time, but I cannot do so.

Do a malware check with some malware scan programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

I have not been able to go in to any of the google sites.

Empty the Safari cache. Press Command + Option + E then quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Can't access certain Google sites (youtube and google-analytics)

I can't access Youtube or goole-analytics in Safari or in Firefox. In Safari, I get an error saying that Safari could not contact the server. Here are more symptoms:
    - A ping from Terminal works. The site responds.
    - No change when firewall is turned off.
    - No change when LittleSnitch is turned off.
    - No change when all settings in Safari are reset.
    - google.com works fine.
    - yahoo.com works fine.
    - Other video sites work fine - only youtube is affected.
    - Youtube videos linked on other web sites do not work.
    - In Safari I get a blank window - no text at all.
    - In Firefox I get text but no videos at all - but the page never fully loads.
    - Parental controls are off.
    - I connect to the internet without proxies - ie. there are no proxy settings.
    - I have installed the latested versions of Flash and Shockwave.
I have seen a lot of messages regarding this problem. Does anyone know about the cause ? Some people have noted the problem started with the beta version of Safari v4. If so, why would that stop Firefox from working ?
It's not a big deal but this is really bugging me. Why would all web acess be lost ?

    Great news Garry, thanks!
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
Problems are that many Modems/Routers don't communicate the DNS Servers with macs all that well because they've made mistakes in their Firmware & by golly by gee, they tell MS about the workaround!
Then, many... even major ISPs have DNS problems and may have not even patched them against DNS poisoning!
Those numbers are in the US, and there may or may not be faster ones in your area, but I doubt there'll be and better more reliable ones!
