My story

My year anniversary as an Apple user is coming up in May. It is indeed a anniversary worthy of celebration. After being a Windows user since... well, I shall refrain from showing my age, suffice to say, I remember the yellow file manager icon on the desktop. I made the switch because of Final Cut Pro.
The biggest accolade that I can give Apple is that in all my years, I have not made a purchase that I was happier with. From design to function... Apple computers and OS are a stellar performance.
I waited for Aperture to come out like Ralphie anticipating opening the package of his Red Ryder BB Gun. I was one of the first to buy it at the store. I fought through all the negativity on the boards, looking for the indispensable information and hints that would help me with the program.
I love the look and feel of the program, the functions, and the features. I always felt that it was a bit slow... Yesterday I got my copy of Photoshop CS2.
I am sorry for silently passing judgment on the people that vocalized their displeasure. Being in Bridge and immediately viewing a photo without "loading", scrolling with absolute ease, not having to wait 15 minutes to import a 1GB Scandisk, and most importantly, converting my Raw images with Camera Raw and comparing the quality, has led me do a very difficult decision... Aperture has, for the time being, been taken out of my dock. $500.00... Ouch!!!
I mention all of this because I needed to vent. Not sure if this will make the forum, or get pulled because it is neither informative nor helpful…
All the best

HC,
The people on this forum that are able to upgrade their video card have had some very good to excellent results. BUT, not everyone can upgrade. (Laptops are a no go on video upgrade – built in).
I ordered the Quad (Aperture in the same order) at the time when there were only 2 video card options (NVIDIA 6600 or $1650 for the Quadra - too much$). I was getting the latest and greatest Mac, with a very good video card and 4GB RAM. This new Quad will blow away my 1Ghz PB. So, I had nothing to worry about?!?
Just like you, it took some time before people realized that the video card was the culprit for the slow speeds.
Before this information was known (based on Apple tech support and the personnel at the Genius Bar) I bought a new external HDD and dedicated it to my Aperture Library and added even more RAM. The results were the same?!? Aperture will bring my Quad to its knees. I spend more time watching the SBOD (Spinning Ball Of Death), than doing work.
So why don’t I just upgrade my video card??? I CAN’T!!!!
The Apple site and stores won’t sell the NVIDIA 7800 separately; you have to buy a whole new computer. Also, there is too much speculation that other off the shelf PCI-E video cards won’t work (still waiting for others to report their findings).
L M can point to the fact that certain things are better for others (fine), but what L M doesn’t see is the fact that some of us bought a German car (Mac) and got an American car (PC) when it runs Aperture (unlike those beautiful videos on the Aperture site). Yes there are several things that work much faster on my Quad (Photoshop, FCE and others), but Aperture was one of the main reasons I jumped in on a new desktop.
Take the X800 XT out of L M’s computer and give no choice for a video upgrade and L M would see our situation. It is easy to mock the unfortunate and brush it off as some type of flaw in how we use the program. Arrogance is what gets annoying.

  • New technique to place multiple anchored objects in InDesign story

    Hello,
For a while I have been trying to figure out how to insert multiple anchored objects into an Indesign story. As far as I can tell, you cannot copy multiple objects that have already been placed in a document (such as a multi-page pdf) into an InDesign story, but must copy and paste them one-by-one into the story. This is a problem for a project I am working on where I want to have a large number of 340x52 pt pdfs to flow throughout a document in a master text frame interspersed with text.
I have now found a solution for this issue that I thought I would share in case it would be helpful for anyone. It utilizes Automator actions for Mac OS X and Microsoft Word 2011 [2008 may work also, but I don't have a copy of that to test]; I am not good with scripting but perhaps similar solutions could be found for other systems and programs.
    1. If you want to place a multipage pdf within a text frame, first it into individual files for each page (with Acrobat Pro or pdftk or something similiar).
    2. Create an Automator service or program with the action "Create New Word Document". You can also use another automator action to save the document, or save it manually (to change the filename). In the finder, select the items you want, then run the service or drag them into the Automator program you have created.
    3. Place the word document into your InDesign story. Your items will now be anchored objects ordered in your text frame as they were in the finder.
Please let me know if this is helpful or if anyone has suggestions for doing this process is a more efficient way. I am not sure, but it may be the case that this approach would only work on Macs, as I gather from this thread.

I might note that I am using InDesign CS 5, and importing from a document stored in docx format.

  • Error Installing Adobe Air from Story Desktop Application Installer

This is truly driving me nuts already.
Every time I try to install the Desktop Application from the Story website, it says I must install Adobe Air. So I click Install, it shows the progress bar to 100%, then errors out with a window. The window header reads "Adobe AIR Installer" and the main section of the window reads "Couldn't write the application to the hard disk. Please verify the hard disk is available and try again." - There is a Retry and Cancel. Retry does it all again with same results.
No, I had no previous versions of Adobe Air. So I tried installing AIR direct from the Adobe website, and it installs fine. So I go back to the Story webpage and try installing the Desktop Application again and the exact same set of events as described above happens. I uninstalled the AIR install, tried again, same result.
I had Production Premium CS3 previously, and installed Production Premium CS5 UPGRADE. All the programs in the suite work like a charm!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with 208 Gig free on my C drive, as well as over 500 gig free spread out over two other drives. 8 Gig memory, and two Nvidia Qadro FX 3500 video cards (If that matters at all). Full admin rights to the PC, not limited in any way.
A quick Google search shows plenty of other people having the same problem,  just no known fixes I've found!
    HELP!!!
PS- I have a picture of the error message, but the insert picture link is greyed out and won't let me add anything to this post.

  • Adobe story stuck at "ST STORY" and is not loading

I am trying to use adobe story free for the first time.  Joined adobe cloud.  Uploaded latest flash.  Cleared all cash.
can load in, but when hit get started the screen has "ST ADOBE STORY" and a orange bar like it is loading, but does nothing else.
one post suggested trying a different browser, I was using chrome.  I use IE, and it immediately went to the same place.  it skipped join, sign in .....

    - First update the flash player plugin ( http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer )
and then make sure that your browser is able to display flash content. To check this you can visit this site: Adobe - Flash Player
Here you should be able to observe the 'Version Information' box.
Now visit Adobe Story again in the browser and login.
The 'St Adobe Story' animation page is a place-holder page while browser is downloading the Adobe Story application in the background. (application is of nearly 3 MB in size)
    - If you are still stuck on that page after few minutes then you can try the following to make sure that this is not an issue related to cache/cookies.
       - Open New Private Browsing Window of the browser ( In Chrome the option is 'New Incognito Window' )
       - Visit Adobe Story in that window, login and wait few minutes for application to load.
       - If you are able to login in this window then please clear your browser's cache and cookies (How do I clear my web browser's cache, cookies, and history?)
    - If it is still stuck, then please try to update your browser. ( or may be install a new browser, say firefox, and try on that one )

  • Adobe Story Script integration with Premiere Pro Doesnt allow me to embed the script

Goal:  Embed an Adobe Story Script into Premiere Pro. (mac)
Method:  I have a video with a verbatim transcript.
I inport the transcript into Adobe Story and save it in the proper Adobe Story File extension (.astx)
I save it to the Adobe cloud and I have also exported it to my desktop.
I launch Premiere Pro and import the video that I have transcribed.
The I try one of 3 ways to get the script to the video in PP.
The first steps are the same as below:
I go to Adobe Story and log in from within PP.
    I locate the file.
    I add a Scene.
I make sure the scene is the same as it is within PP
    then...
    1.
I drag and drop it onto the Movie file.
Nothing appears within the Embed Adobe Story Script Meta Data field.
    2.
I click on Analyze and the Embed Adobe Story Script script checkbox remains greyed out (Unable to select it)
If I click Analyze then PP will analyze the script (does a decent job) but this is NOT what I want.  I want to attach the verbatim script to the video which is why I have it transcribed.
    3.
Right click on the movie file within PP and the contextual menu allows me to attach a script.
I locate my downloaded .astx file on my Mac and select it.
Still nothing appears within the Embed Adobe Story Metadata field.
I have worked with Anand from support who suggested I post this question here.
I dont know if there are only certain Adobe templates for which this will work (ie TV script, Film etc)
He suggested that this would most likely work only for the .mov file formats, but then discovered that it should work even for .mp4 files.
In any case - if anyone has any thoughts, ideas, or has experience with this It would be greatly appreciated.

  • Cross Reference Sources appearing in Story Editor view but not appearing in the Cross Ref pane

I have imported a Word document containing working cross references into an InDesign document. The vast majority of these cross references import correctly and link to their destinations within the document, however there are some that are not working. If I view the text frame in the story editor view, I can see these "broken" cross reference sources that came in from the Word doc but on selecting them I can see that there isnt a corresponding entry for it in the cross reference pane. As said, there are only a few that are behaving like this.
What could be causing these not to appear in the cross reference pane?
Obviously as they are not appearing in the list of cross references I can't update them, and also, as they are technically broken cross references, because a source exists for them but there is no corresponding entry in the pane, then on export to epub, InDesign crashes (If there is one broken cross reference in a document, export to Epub will crash indesign).
Also, to clarify, in the Word doc if I navigate to a cross reference that is failing once in InDesign, I can update it properly, and also navigate to its destination in the Word doc, so it's not as though these cross references are broken before coming into InDesign. Also I believe the destinations for these "broken" cross references are coming across properly to indesign too as I can see them in the story editor view.
Supposed Cross Reference source selected in Story Editor view on left, but no corresponding cross reference highlighted in pane on right:
    Technical Details:
    InDesign CS5.5 - Version 7.5.3
Microsoft Word 2010, File type .docx

I have found the possible cause of this problem!
If a table is used within the Word document somewhere between where the cross reference source is and its destination then that particular cross reference will be broken as described above in my initial post.
So the "fix" is to remove any occurances of a table in the Word document and the cross references come into InDesign perfectly. This is actually not a fix at all. I need to use tables in the Word document for layout purposes so if they break cross references if they stand between them and their destinations then I have to compromise, i.e. use tables but with no cross references in the document or vice versa.
I found a similar issue recently with index markers in Word causing a shift on the cross reference tags when bought into InDesign. The "fix" again for that was to remove all index markers from the Word document. See post about this here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1043981
InDesign really needs to sort out the issues with importing of Word documents with cross references in them. If I can't use index markers and tables in a Word document without breaking its cross references then they can't claim to have the ability to import a Word document while maintaining its cross references into an InDesign document. It just doesnt work as ive painstakingly proven.

  • Story Maker Copyright Question

    Hello,
I wish to post a video (commercial for my book) I put together using Story Maker onto YouTube. I have made two commercials already, but I recorded my own music for those older ones. For my new video, I wish to use one of the sample tracks provided on the Story Maker app. I could not find any copyright information about those songs, so I am wondering if I will run into any issues if I post the video as it is. If I need permission to use the music, from whom do I need to obtain that permission, and how may I contact them? Thank you!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm going out on a limb with a guess, but if BlackBerry has supplied music with its app and you're able to just throw the song in to any video you record, it can be assumed that the music is public domain. BlackBerry would not include any music for which you didn't have full permissions to share.
Just a guess but a pretty good one, I would think.
    - If my response has helped you, please click "Options" beside my post and mark it as solved. Clicking the "thumbs up" icon near the bottom of my response would also be appreciated.

  • Success story: NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card defect repaired at no cost

This is the story of Apple servicing my MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA graphics card defect.
I had the NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card defect in my 2 year old MacBook Pro. The symptoms were pinkish images, scrambled and chopped images, and finally leading to no video, all within a matter of 3 days. I called AppleCare using the old number I remembered from my 100mhz Mac days: 1-800-SOS-APPLE. I was greeted by a real person within 3 minutes. She explained that my 90-day complimentary phone service had expired some 600 days ago.
After I mentioned the specific Apple Knowledge base article that described the defect (TS2377), and that it was covered up to three years out of warranty, she transferred me to a MacBook Pro specialist. Sheri ran me through several standard resets and reboots. She then suggested that it be taken into an Apple store for a genius to look at. When I explained that the nearest Apple Store was an hour away, she arranged for a mail-in service.
After the call had ended, I received a simple email with her phone number so that I could contact her if I needed to. Another automated email contained my repair case number and a link to check the status online. The online status center is very easy to use. It displayed three steps: Sending the empty box, service in progress and return. FedEx tracking numbers were included with working links.
The next day an empty box arrived, completely with graphical IKEA like packaging instructions and form fitting foam for my MacBook Pro. I knew when the FedEx truck came around, so I had my computer ready by my side. As soon as FedEx showed up, I explained that the empty box was for the computer and Marcos helped me apply the pre-paid return label and taped the box expertly with tape from his truck. I also placed in the box a copy of the Apple Knoweldge base article and pictures I had taken of the issue.
Apple had included a small stack of super adhesive pre-cut tape square, but Macros was already taping it before I figured out what they were. The return label was also pre-paid with overnight service.
The next day I logged into the online support status at Apple.com and checked my status. The tracking number showed it had arrived in Houston, and the three steps had been updated to "Repairs completed" and "Return in progress."
The return FedEx tracking number was displayed later in the evening, and it showed that it was guaranteed to arrive by 10:30AM the next day. Speedy service! Sure enough, the next day I had my computer back in my hands, all data perfect and intact. I was very worried since I was not able to make a back up before sending it in, and Apple does not guarantee data safety. Apple had replaced the logic board, valued at $700 on iFixit (http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Core-2-Duo-2-2-GHz-Logic -Board/IF185-073).
The funny thing is, for the past 5 years, I have always cloned my drive or used time machine, but for the past two months I had cleared the backups to make up extra room on my externals. You really never know when disaster will strike!
    Learned:
    - Apple Customer Care is top notch, speedy and their status site is very easy to use
    - FedEx service was very helpful
    - If you have a NVIDIA graphics card, Mac or PC, check if your model is affected. Just today Sony announced that NVIDIA cards with defects will now be covered for 4 years out of warranty. (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10307592-64.html)
    - Back up your stuff NOW. Use a flash drive or email files to yourself for a cheap fix.
    Roland

    ha
got the same problem with my mbp (dec 2007)
also no video within 5 hours .... also no external video.
lucky i had screen sharing on so i could check the system profiler via an other mac.
It couldn't find the 6800M GT anymore...
did another backup and went to the local apple store
took a print out of Apple Knowledge base article that described the defect (TS2377)
and they replaced the logicboard+gpu for free within 10 days ...
everything is ok now except for my maxmsp copy which thinks it runs on an other machine and complains about a missing licence ....

Hi, I have a problem with getting my apple Id working for me. It's been 2 months since it happened and Apple failed to act. I can tell my story proerly, but am not sure, you guys can help, so I just copy my message to them today, I am trying to get it across all the places around to pay their attention. This is a desperate move, so if you are not the right people to help me to get my message accross, may be you can advise where can I go.
Thank you, and sorry for the language.

I am sorry to say that, but your security makes my life miserable – it’s been 2 months since my Apple ID account got stuck, and since then I cannot update 37 applications (to date), i.e. most of my applications. Half of them I bought. I also paid for iCloud, and it is not working. I paid money and I am stuck with old applications and no iCloud. Your security *****. Your service ***** too. It took your service 1 month to finally understand why this happened to me, and it took me tens of emails to you and 3 hours of telephone conversation to find out the reason for my problem. And the problem is still not fixed. NOT FIXED. You just leave your customer – the one who paid you money and spent so much time with you trying to help you help me – and nothing. You tell me:  “Vitas, Stick your stinky iphone in your *** and enjoy life, we do not care!” *************.
It is ******* outrageous, and you should know that,  guys. Get into the ******* database and correct the bug. Get someone in the partners-telephone carriers company (it is Orange as carreer and Cellcom as seller of the phone)  authorized to Identify me in personal encounter in one of the branches in Israel (where I live) and make sure it is really me, and get the ******* system accept my password and let me use my phone.
Otherwise **** off. None of my friends will get my advise to buy an iphone or any of apple products. And I think you should be very attentive to cases like this, guys. Do your work for the money we pay, or disappear. There are many others eager to take your place, and if the problem is not fixed I will eventually go to the others. My patience is lost, and as soon as I can afford another phone I will change it. AND I WILL TRY TO GIVE BAAAAAD PUBLICITY TO APPLE – I am threatening here, so ACT NOW.

Well, it seems waiting is not my strong suit..! I renamed a javascript file called recovery to sessionstore. This file was in the folder sessionstore-backups I had copied from mozilla 3 days ago, when my tabs were still in place. I replaced the sessionstore in mozilla's default folder with the renamed file and then started mozilla. And the tabs reappeared as they were 3 days ago!
So there goes the tab problem. But again when I started mozilla the window saying "a script has stopped responding" appeared, this time the script being: chrome//browser/contenttabbrowser.xml2542
If someone knows how to fix this and make firefox launch normally, please reply! Thank you

  • My Many Irritations (story) and a New Solved Problem (video playback)

This topic is just going to ramble through the many things that have irritated me about my iPod since the purchase only three weeks ago. Don't get me wrong, though, I still love the thing. For the most serious problems, check out Numbers 3 and 11.
    Lets see... where to begin...
I originally had no interest in the iPod, but some time after the unveiling of the fifth generation's new capabilities a friend of mine started talking about it quite a lot. And so, some time in early November, my hype for the video iPod had grown greatly. I downloaded Videora iPod converter and started converting music videos like crazy.
By the time December rolled in I had successfully converted almost all of my 150 or so music videos and imported them into iTunes. With Christmas coming up I was wondering if I should just ask for it as a gift, but impatience set in and I bought it on the fifth of December, and have greatly enjoyed it since.
Sounds peachy, but there's a fair bit that I left out.
Number 1. I love viewing movie trailers on Apple's website. But with the recent update to the quicktime software, it was required to get the updated version. With that came iTunes, a program that was at the time unwanted and an irratation.
Number 2. Videora iPod Converter has it's fair share of bugs. While I successfully converted many a video with it, I found it would 100% of the time fail to convert files of the .wmv format (Windows Media). As well, I would later find a more serious problem.
Number 3. On the first day of using the iPod I had a serious error. I had been watching videos just fine all day, and the iPod was working perfectly. I then chose a video to play and inexplicably the iPod froze. These are the symptoms: black screen, backlight on, no responce from controls.
Tired, as it was the end of the day, I was unwilling to go to the computer room and attempt to find a solution online. And so, I gambled that the backlight would drain the battery and hoped that upon a recharge, everything would be fine. As the backlight was illuminating my bedroom, I put the iPod in it's sleeve to dim it a bit and went to sleep.
As you can imagine, this was kind of scary. I was afraid that I had bricked my iPod on it's first day.
In the morning, the battery had died and I was able to recharge it by syncing it with my computer. After charging, I tried a few videos and then tried the offending video. Again it froze, but this time I was confident that the backlight would drain the battery and it would be fine.
I then looked at the folder wherin I had saved the converted video. Among all my other videos was the offending one. I played it in Quicktime 7, and everything was fine until I realized the length of the video was double what it should be. After what should be the end of the music video came two minutes of a white screen. The file size was also abnormally large, compared to the other videos.
It turns out that Videora iPod Converter can sometimes produce corrupt files, and these corrupt files will not be detected by iTunes as corrupt. Such files can be trasferred to iTunes and to your iPod without any error or problem, but will lock up your iPod when played. Now, when converting batches of videos with Videora, I scan the file-sizes to see if any are abnormally large; after all, using the same settings on a batch of similar in length videos should produce files of similar size.
It occurs to me now that the method for resetting the iPod might have worked as an alternative to draining the battery.
Number 4. I should mention that the battery life on this thing was (for me) unexpectedly low when playing videos. I'm not saying that mine is defective or anything, but I just found that the battery runs down pretty quick when playing videos; quicker than I had thought it might. Not a big problem, though.
Number 5. In a search to find something to convert my .wmv videos to an iPod compatible format I found the ImToo converter. It works quite well, but the trial version is limited to videos of five minutes or less in length. I'm considering paying for the full version, but if someone knows of another reliable .wmv converter, I'd be glad to try that. For now, ImToo is good enough as most music videos are less than five minutes long, but I do have some other videos in the .wmv format that I would like to transcode.
Number 6. In mid December I went out of town for three days. Of course, I brought along my new favorite portable media player. Not surprisingly, the battery soon ran low and I was without my computer to recharge it. So I went out to a store and bought Apple's official USB Power Adapter. I thought it was kind of expensive, especially considering that they used to be BUNDLED with the older iPod models, but I was happy to find I would now be able to charge my iPod. Wrong. Something that was not made obvious to me by the package description (if it is even mentioned there) is that the darn thing needs the USB cable that came with the iPod. It does not come with one, and so if all you have is a wall socket, the USB Power Adapter, and an iPod, you're screwed. Unless it's the iPod shuffle, which apparantly is the only thing that works with the USB Power Adapter out of the box. As far as portability goes, I feel this hurts. I would have liked to keep my USB cable attached to my computer. After all, it is a pain to get to the back of my computer and keep plugging it in or unplugging it.
Number 7. I'm rather irritated with certain aspects of the iPod's interface considering music videos and regular song files. I spent a good amount of time adding artist and album tags to all of my music videos. These tags make sorting the videos in iTunes much easier.
First, the iPod's interface does not allow for the search of videos through album tags, but does through artist tags.
Second, going to Music>Albums> gives a long, cluttered list of Albums because of all of my music videos and one-hit songs that belong to only one album each.
I suppose there is a workaround.
Number 8. I recently bought another accessory for my iPod. The LOGiiX Amplified Fold-Up Speakers. A very attractive and portable set of speakers for the iPod. It comes with a little stand that holds the iPod in place, and works off of either 4 AAA Batteries or AC Power. Yet again, this is a product that DOES NOT come with the power adapter. Now, I think I MAY have one somewhere in my house... perhaps the power adapter that CAME WITH my SONY MD that is being replaced with the iPod will work....
Oh, and that little clip-on stand I mentioned? I expect it to be lost soon because when I fold up my portable speakers there is no way to clip the stand onto the outside of the speakers.
Now, as far as portability goes, I have to carry with me (at the most) seven things: the iPod, the headphones, the USB connector, the USB power adapter, the fold-up speakers, the little stand, and an AC power adapter.
Number 9. Minor irritation in my control of the clickwheel. After this long, I still accidentally select the wrong thing, and often take a fair time to get the highlight where I want. Meh, this one I'll figure out eventually.
Number 10. There was something irritating about entirely forgetting my login for my Apple ID and having to create this brand new one for today.
Number 11. Just today, I have come across a problem with the video not playing. I watched one video just fine, went to the Videos>Movies> tab and, as mentioned above, accidentally highlighted a video I did not wish to play and hit the Select button. Normally when this happens I wait until the video has loaded - when the screen goes black and the white Play symbol appears in the top left. But this time, I immediately hit the Menu button to go back to the Movies tab. The video's loading was interrupted and I went back to the Movies tab.
Now, when I select and play ANY video, after a noticable but short wait the screen goes black, another noticably longer wait and the play symbol appears, and then a black screen for a few seconds and the iPod skips ahead to the next video, which behaves in the exact same way.
I have powered down the iPod using the method of holding the pause button, but the problem persits.
My music videos can be played as songs by finding them under the Music tab, but no videos play as videos.
I am not at my home computer, and so running iPod updater or just trying to sync is not an option right now.
I will soon try to reset the iPod using the method described on Apple's support website.
EDIT Okay, the reset did the trick. Videos are playing fine now. I still want to share my iPod story, so I'll leave this here, but have changed it from being a question. Below are the instructions I followed for the reset.
    RESETTING THE IPOD
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

    Nice Rant session:
"It turns out that Videora iPod Converter can sometimes produce corrupt files, and these corrupt files will not be detected by iTunes as corrupt. Such files can be trasferred to iTunes and to your iPod without any error or problem, but will lock up your iPod when played. Now, when converting batches of videos with Videora, I scan the file-sizes to see if any are abnormally large; after all, using the same settings on a batch of similar in length videos should produce files of similar size."
What did you expect for freeware? Nice effort but because it's free everyone thinks it's a gem. It's not. This web site has been flooded with questions that should be directed at the authors website. Video conversion and editing is not for the beginner. Sounds to me that you have a bunch of badly converted videos that are causing a lot of problems. Videora problems:
    Known Bugs
    Audio/Video sync
Problem - Output files can be out-of-sync. While no set pattern has been established, it seems to be more frequent with input files of 23.976 fps, non-DVD rips, and WMV/MPG filetypes.
Workaround solutions - Try the custom option '-async 1'. If the disconnect gradually increases over time, setting 29.97 fps sometimes gets rid of the problem regardless of the input fps. You can also use AviSynth to assume the FPS and have the audio sync to that. If it's a sudden disconnect, check your VOB Cell settings in DVD Decrypter settings per this thread. Otherwise, test with an AviSynth script per the DaProphecy's method in the FAQ. For non-DVD files, PSPVideo 9 may be a good short-term solution until the converter stabilizes some more or try something like AviDemux.
Audio track not getting picked up
Problem - The IFO stream rip is fine, but the converted file has no sound. The debug info showed to audio track getting picked up. The most obvious case with this is the Madagascar DVD.
Workaround solution ideas - Test with an AviSynth script per the DaProphecy's method in the FAQ (untested). Use a different DVD ripper.
    Program doesn't start (.NET issue?)
Problem - Converter errors upon starting with an extended dump.
Solution ideas - Update .NET framework (in all languages you're using!) to most recent solution. Clean out registry. Neither of these have worked for some.
    Progress meter incorrect
Problem - During transcodes, the progress meter can be incorrect; thus, transcoding continues after the meter hits 100% and time remaining is zero. People have been seeing this more often with VOB files and/or the H.264 codec.
Workaround - Figure out the length of your movie in seconds and compare that to the 'Processed' field. A 2-hour movie will not finish until Processed hits 7200 seconds.
Artifacts (bad video quality) in darker scenes
Problem - Scenes with darker background colors tend to have more artifacts (blocked video). It's much more obvious on the iPod, so this may be an Apple firmware problem.
Workaround ideas - Use a VBR setting (FQ->VBR, two-pass A->VBR) to improve video quality. The custom option '-mbd 2' might help.
    Desktop icon
Problem - When installing, the desktop icon does not appear/stick when using lower color setups.
Workarounds - Select a 32-bit color scheme in your desktop settings, or change the icon in the shortcut.
    Profile changes don't always stick
Problem - If you make a change to a profile, click apply, and immediately trancdoe with that profile, the transcode might not use the new settings.
Workarounds - Once you click apply, swtich to another profile and back again to make sure the change is still there. If that doesn't work, create a new profile.
Can only install/use with admin rights
Problem - There have been reports of non-admin users not being able to use the converter.
Workarounds - Separate installs or give all users admin rights.
Who in their right mind would use a program that has these many critical bugs to convert files for the IPOD. People who are cheap, kids with no money and people who are just plain gullably.
    A little research and downloading a trial from this site would have solved your video problems early on;
    http://www.divmm.com/
The 5th Gen IPOD was designed to support video content that was purchased on the ITunes web site. For everything else, you are on your own.

  • I will never complain about Creative products again...long story

Two days ago I was a winy little #$%&* complaining about what my Zen Touch didn't do. It didn't support Audible, it didn't support Janus, has few accessories, blah, blah, blah. Then, it didn't do anything...it broke. So, in my infinite wisdom, I decided that I would get a replacement. I had always looked for something a little smaller, a little sleeker, and not an iPod (that's another story altogether). I didn't go out and just grab what looked good on the shelf...no, I had my priorities. Battery life is important, almost more so than features. I looked up several candidates
    <BLOCKQUOTE dir=ltr>
    Zen Touch - 40Gb - 24 hour battery
    Sony Network Walkman HD05 - 20Gb - 40 hour battery
    iRi'ver (insert model here) - 20Gb - 6 hour battery (or was it 2)
    Apple iPod Photo - 60Gb - 2 hour battery
    Zen XTra - 60Gb - I don't remember the battery life[/quote]
At the time, I didn't even consider a 5Gb player because I was distraught. I had just lost something that, until that morning, was just another thing that I took everywhere with me. I didn't realize the gaping hole that its loss would create.
After reading some reviews, I settled on the Sony player. It's small, it's slick, ZDNet gave it a sweet review with the only real bad points being the software (Sonic Stage) and the only available music service (Sony Connect) and it's got a 40 hour battery. I got this beautiful piece of audio hardware back to the office and quickly downloaded some tunes from EMusic (excellent bit rates...better than ANY download service period...if you like independent labels), loaded SonicStage and dumped the songs on the player. At first I thought, "SonicStage is a little slow...", but I had no idea what I was in for. I played the device and noticed...the sound...a little tinny. So what! I'll mess with the EQ later! I have a 40 hour removable battery! I also noted, that you can't build playlists on the fly. They had a "Bookmark" feature, but the only way to add songs to a bookmark was if the song was currently playing. I missed "Add to selected" but hell, it's got a 40 hour battery. I got the beast home, installed SonicStage on my PC and pointed it to my music library of some 5000 songs. SonicStage didn't like the fact that my library was on a network dri've (I have a Buffalo LinkStation that has nothing but media on it.) It began the import and after 2 hours of lots of blinking lights on my router asked me if I wanted to copy the files to my local hard disk. Of course not! That's what I bought the link station for! Creative doesn't have a problem with this! Why was Sony concerned? I told it "No!" After about another hour of activity, It showed me that it had begun importing the files. Four hours later it was done. Seven hours total to import my files? No problem, I have a 40 hour BATTERY! I then, sleepily as it was 2:30 in the morning, began to copy music to the device. Since I had also done this at work, the software said that I couldn't put any files from another computer onto the device. I had to delete the songs on the device and register my home computer. Fine, the songs are still in my library. I deleted the files, the hourglass appeared...and stayed... Thirty minutes later...the hourglass...what the #$%&! Now, I was told ahead of time that I would absolutely hate the software by a friend that owns a newer MiniDisc player. I have a faster computer than him so I thought it would be different: it wasn't. I have a great deal of tolerance for computers because I am a computer programmer and technician. I could not deal with this...this THING had to go.
Today, I returned the Sony THING and gave myself till lunch to think about buying a new player. I came to the following conclusion. My Zen Touch will get fixed. I will use my Zen Touch until it completely dies. I like Creative's Zen Explorer...it's small, fast, and integrated into Windows. I like being able to queue up exactly what I want to play on the fly. Sony's didn't offer any of that. The Zen Touch may be a little fat, a little old (technology ages quickly), but the Touch really does nearly everything I wanted and does it well. Sony didn't even come close...it was just a pretty face, a slim design, and a bad personality. From what I can tell, Sony designed it's software for smaller players and smaller libraries. To me it doesn't seem to keep in mind, that I may not want to play everything by one artist or genre. It doesn't allow me to play an album, queue up another, and another...it allows that functionality on the song level through it's bookmarks. From what I hear the iPod is similar, but since I have no experience with the iPod, I cannot comment (If it is I'll add that to my reasons not to buy an iPod).
At lunch, I returned to Fry's (my 4th time in 2 days) and went looking. I picked up a 5Gb iRi'ver, then a Rio Carbon. I stopped... I was doing it again. Creative players had been good to me... I didn't need another big player...just a small player I could use as a backup...the Touch would be fixed! I then picked up a Zen Micro and didn't turn back. Perhaps my comfort level with the Creative devices is just way to high. Perhaps the Sony software just shocked me. Whatever it was; unless I can see how a player works and how the software reacts, I think Creative will always get first consideration when choosing a new device.

iTunes only works on two platforms, so it's hardly some paragon of development.
It's still one supported platform more than any other software, including Creative's Mediasource. This is a paragon of development compared to other MP3 players' software.
    SSR wrote:
The only reason they got it working on Windows was to sell more iPods and tunes from their store.
You say that like it's a bad thing. One wonders why other MP3 player manufacturers haven't done the same thing in return to boost their own sales. There is no MP3 player to compete with the iPod on the Mac because it seems no other manufacturer is able to write compatible software or firmware. Gi'ven that the iPod started on the Mac and really started the MP3 player appeal for the masses, I find it staggering that no other MP3 player software developer even considered writing support for the Macintosh into their own software development plans.
    SSR wrote:
I find the UI for iTunes *awful* so it's not as simple as you make out. Also the UI is hardly Windows compliant.
You may not like the UI for iTunes, but hundreds of thousands of other people love it! I (personally) prefer WMP0, but iTunes is the only other MP3 player management software that even comes close to that. Mediasource is laughable next to iTunes. The iTunes UI may not be windows compliant, but that's hardly a failing. When I referred to compliancy, I mainly meant the firmware (such as UMS support) did not conform to any known standards which meant that the software developers for the management software faced the burden of making it compatible with other (non-Windows) platforms.

  • Service story

On Thu 7/19, about 3:00 PM, we had a close lightning strike.   Evidently hit a tree close to the house.  Almost immediately afterward, discovered no phone service / no DSL.  Check on several phones in the house, no dial tone at any.
Called Verizon.  Explained that we did have a lightning strike and that phones / DSL out (no dial tone).  OK, rep runs a line test says everything OK must be inside the house.  I object and go outside and check at the NIC box.  No dial tone there.  Rep now  agrees issue is outside the house.  Tells me the first available appt is Tue 7/24 in the afternoon.  Not happy.  Explain I work from home and no DSL is a real issue for me.  Also, I've just gotten over being one of those folks without power for 8 days and also had a four day phone/DSL outage then.  My sob story does no good.  Rep says he can't do better than five days out for a service call but then, he didn't even try to see if he had some avenue to do better.
OK.  Next day I check with some neighbors.  Guess what, I'm not the only one with no phone.  So I call Verizon back to see if there's possibility of getting earlier repair since multiple folks are out.  All the rep can say is that my outage has been attached to a group outage but can't tell me anything about possibility of repair earlier than 7/24.  OK, I'll be patient and wait.
Tue 7/24.  Wait all afternoon for someone to show up.  Wife and I are home all the time (remember - I work from home) and we have two very noisy dogs that would let us know if anyone came up the driveway.  About 6:30 PM I get an automated call from Verizon asking me to take a survey on the repair person.  Asks me if I'm the person who interacted.  When I press 2 for no, tells me they'll call back later when that person who interacted is available.  Absolutely no option to say 'never showed up'.
So I call Verizon.  Explain to the rep that I waited five days for a repair person and just got a survey call but that no repair person ever showed up.  Rep is 'sympathetic' (obviously playing to a script) and advises the case has been been closed with repair person saying service @ 4:57 PM.  Tells me the best he can do is to schedule another appt.  Tells me that he can get a repair person out Sat 7/28.  I was livid !  I waited 5 days for the repair from my first call, tech doesn't show up at the house and now I'm being told I have to wait another 4 days.  I was not nice.  What really galled me was no attempt (other than script pablum) to get me fixed.  Rep told me best he could do was to call 'dispatch' and see if they could get someone hear earlier.  I told him that I wanted a supervisor to call me back with 1) an explanation of what the tech did and 2) plan to have a technician here the following day.
About an hour later, supervisor calls.  Tells me that dispatch says they can't send anyone before Sat.  I went ballistic.  I advised her that was not acceptable.  Questioned that I could not believe they had no process to handle this kind of scenario.   Advised her I wanted her to pursue it and that I would, if necessary, expedite this to whatever the highest local executive level in our service area the next day.  I was extremely persistent and not polite (gave up on that several calls ago).  Tells me that they can 'forward' my number to another phone temporarily.  I let her know that DSL is also out, I work from home so I'm hosed.  Sheepish 'Oh' from her side.  She agrees she'll pursue it further and call me back within an hour.
While I wait for her call, I get another 'survey' call on our 'repair person interaction'.
OK, about 1/2 an hour later supervisor calls back.  Tells me that I will have repair person on Wed 7/25.  Amazing !!  After being told several times 'we have no way to do this' they make it happen.  Tells me that the repair person had checked something on a pole (all our service is under ground, nearest pole is 1/2 mile away) and he thought it could be a cable problem.  I asked why did he then close the ticket without  a) checking with us to see if issue was resolved or b) forwarding to the 'cable' folks for a follow up repair and advising us of status.  Couldn't answer.  Did ask me if we had recently had a storm in the area and I told her that I told the rep about the lightning strike on my very first call !!  I did thank her for her diligence and that her final behavior (and result) is what customer service is supposed to be about.
About 15 mins after I get off that call, I get an automated call from Verizon telling me my problem has been corrected.  Can you believe that !!
This morning, bright and early, I get a call from the tech who's supposed to show up today and telling me when he expects to be here.  That's the way this should work and I'm hopeful I'll have service by the end of the day.
Anyone  from Verizon care to comment ?  If you do, make it a meaningful answer with some depth.  If all you're going to do is give a canned reply, don't bother.

Resolved !!  Tony showed up at 1:00 (1 hr before he thought he would get here).  He started working from the NIC box back.  Within an hour I had phone service / DSL back.  Lightning had blasted some connections in a culvert service box at the bottom of the driveway.  Thanked Tony profusely and let him know that Verizon should be thankful they have employees like him.
So Verizon - why didn't the repair person who was supposed to have fixed the problem yesterday find this when Tony found it so quickly.  Oh yes, that repair person didn't even come to the house !!  And why did I have to 'kick and scream' with the call center folks to get someone out today when Verizon clearly screwed this up by not servicing the problem yesterday.

Command Spacebar opens Spotlight as you have found out. If you want to change languages you need to say what app you are using to write the story in, I'm guessing you are using Pages or MS Word. If that's the case
Pages: Open Inspector - Click the T tab - Click Language and change your language.
MS Word: Tools Menu - Language - Choose your language.

  • PLEASE READ MY STORY AND HELP ME!

    So here's my story:
A few months after I got my iPhone 3G I noticed that it had developed the infamous plastic crack. I contacted the Apple store and they assured me that it would get replaced because it was a known defect. I live about an hour and a half away from an Apple store so I've been putting it off.
A few month ago My iTunes started acting weirdly. Whenever I plugged my phone into it, it would crash. I managed to update it to iTunes 8.2 but the problem kept happening. This went on until I finally had enough of it. I researched several options of how to fix it from switching users on my computer to deauthorizing and reauthorizing my iTunes account to uninstalling and reinstalling. Finally something worked- I went into the list of programs that run on startup and followed instructions to disable some of them.
So now my iTunes didn't crash when I connected it to my iPhone and I started to download 3.0. I didn't get that far because whenever I would try to back it up, it would take tens of hours. Soon my computer was overheating and I had to stop it. I tried again several times all with the same result. I was getting so frustrated with this that I just turned off my backup.
But the problems continued. I finally got to what seemed like the end, but then the 3.0 update stopped for hours and hours on the 'Verifying iPhone update' scrolling bar.
I started researching this problem, on these forums and elsewhere and found no answers. Someone had said to hit ctrl-alt-delete during it, to get out. So frustratedly I did it.. and it stopped.
Now here is where I am now- I'm left with a phone that needs to be restored, but when I restore it it still freezes on the "Verifying" stage.
I was planning on going to the Apple store at some point before my warranty ran out to get the crack problem resolved, but this weekend I am busy and an hour and a half away from the nearest store. Is there anyway I can fix this so I have a phone until I can get to Apple? I can't call Apple because I don't have a home phone.

I would suggest setting up an appointment with a Mac Genius.
    Ray
