My Thunderbird has been hacked by the Home Depot thieves. And it is now full of often sleazy ads that I can't get rid of. Thunderbird won't ban them. Right?

Do I have to jettison my Thunderbird account. I'm a victim of the Home Depot hackers, and my mail is filled daily by often vile trash. Thunderbird won't ban this crap, as Gmail does. What do I do?

Thunderbird bird is email client software not an email provider. Talk to your email provider if you want something banned.
It helps to understand how email works before complaining about the wrong thing and looking foolish.

from the information you provided i can't tell if it is a hardware problem or a software problem. I do have an idea though, try to press your home button and lock button at the same time.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

How can I get rid of this without adding more junk to the computer? People suggest programs to do it, but how do I know they won't make it worse?

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
          Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
          Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:

Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:

Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.

The multi-colored spinning "Beach Ball of death" is caused by your computer doing something so time consuming, it cannot proceed. Some web sites can cause this, but more often it is caused by:
• you are extremely short of RAM memory
• Your hard Drive is failing and a Bad Block is being re-tried hundreds of times to get good data.
Top Priority is to have adequate Backups. Put everything else aside until you have backups, as your hard Drive may die at any moment and take all your data with it.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

Ipod has been disabled but the home button is broken is there another way of rebooting?

My kids iPod Touch has been disabled, have tried to do a recovery as the code as been forgotten, but the home button is broken is there other options?

I know of no such way. RecBoot will place an iPod in recvery mode without using the butttons but I know of no similar program for DFU mode.

Downloaded Firefox update for my Mac and now when I open it, there is a white box at the top of the page with a grey bar in it that I can't get rid of

It over lays the Firefox home page and I can't get rid of it, so I can't click on anything on the Firefox page. I tried deleting Firefox and redownloading it, but that didn't help. As has been said, there is no malware currently capable of infecting an iOS device, unless it has been jailbroken. So that's not a likely possibility.
There are several others, though. The most likely is that either you are falling for phishing scams, or your DNS server has been poisoned and is directing you to a phony PayPal site. Either way, you're ending up at a fake PayPal site.
If you haven't clicked on links in any PayPal e-mails recently, then download a copy of NSLookup (free) on the App Store, then do a lookup for paypal.com. What IP address comes up? I believe that the result should be somewhere in the range 66.211.160.0 - 66.211.191.255.

My computer has been a lemon. They refuse to properly diagnose, fix, and document my complaints regarding the multiple failures I have had with this computer. Also, I was told that upon my logic board being replaced back in April or May that the topic of replacing the computer altogether with one of equal equipment would be appropriate. Insofar, I have been to the store at least three times in the past month to discuss my issues with the computer that were not resolved when the hard drive was replaced in May. I was also told that the repairs on my system would be good for up to 90 days after the repair work was done and that I could buy AppleCare at the end of the 90 days in lieu of insuring a product that still had defects. I have been on the phone for what feels like hours with Apple trying to work this issue out but they are not wanting to stand behind their product nor are they willing to stand behind their warranty. The warranty expressly states that a computer can be replaced entirely if the defect is considered hardware malfunction and at the representative’s discretion. Every time I brought it in for repair it was due to hardware malfunction; however, they also said once that it was an accessory that I bought that was causing the problem which ended up not being the case after all. This is totally unacceptable. I also asked Mark from AppleCare to let me know what was repaired the second time the computer was put through a diagnostic at the Apple Store. Beachballs, Gears, excessive heat, not being taken seriously at the Apple Store, being insulted by a Mac Genius at the Apple Store, being misinformed by a Mac Genius, dealing with a misinformed Mac Genius. They replaced my iPod touch without much ado. I was also accused by an Apple Genius of being "hyperbolic." I also have been waiting for a call back from Kelly (left two voice messages with Kelly) and Mark (wrote an e-mail for which he has not responded to insofar) at Apple but have heard nothing from either one of them regarding the status of my computer. The only thing I received which was automated by the Apple Store was a confirmation that my computer was ready. I have requested documentation of what was done (basically, I am asking for the receipt) before I drive an hour to pick it up. Haven't heard anything. I brought this computer in on July 24, 2011. We are now upon August 2nd. When do I get to know what was even done on my computer? Do they really think that I am going to take back a computer into my possession only to have to bring it back shortly thereafter to address one of the many issues causing it to malfunction in the first place? I have owned 5 computers since 1988. All of them PCs. This is my first Mac. Will it be my last?

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

My phone has been dropping calls on a massive scale. If I receive a text or email, my calls drop. I opened my mail to retrieve a msg and my mailbox graphics was gone. Voice activation and music starts on its own without me even touching my phone. Apps can't be installed on wifi or 3G. The echo from my headset is very annoying. I cant adjust my vibration settings because it doesn't vibrate on silent. It hasn't been dropped or wet. This just started last week when I upgraded to ios6!

What troubleshoot steps have you tried if any such as powering the iPhone off and on, an iPhone reset which is similar to a computer restart, restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup or as a new iPhone or not from the backup?
If no change after restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

My ipad was is displaying an alert message " A wi-fi connection is required to download your apps and media". So it has been connected to the internet over night and this morning but is still displaying the alert message and it won't go away. what to do?

My name is Norbert. I am having some difficulties restoring my icloud back up. My ipad was doing an icloud back up and the alert message displayed on the ipad after my internet was interrupted "A wi-fi connection is required to download your apps and media".
I got the internet working, my ipad is receiving internet network but the alert message is still displayed on the ipad and won't go away, to make matters worse the ipad is frozen and i can't do anything.
Please can anyone with a similar experience tell me what to do in this situation?

Have you tried a hard restart. Press the on/off button and homescreen buttons together until the device shuts down.

I am unable to update my apps on my iPad and iPod and it says my Apple ID has been disabled,I've tried signing out and signing back in but it still comes up with it can anybody help?
