Mybook/Rename Files/Insufficient Access Priveleges

Hi everyone,
I am trying to rename some of the full backup files from Time Machine on my Mybook (i.e. add to the specific date name on the files words such as "full iTunes Iphotos 102410".
When I try to rename it I receive an error stating "insufficient access priveleges" and I do not know how to work around this. Basically to open up space on my MB Pro's HD I need to delete some music, video, photos but by renaming certain phases of the backups I will know in the future where to go fetch them from.
Anyone know if this is a TM problem or Mybook problem?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks +*never to move, change, or delete anything in their backups,+* as that can corrupt them.

That's a very bad idea. See #20 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you're running out of space on your system, your best bet is to get a larger internal HD so there's room for everything.
Second best is, get another external HD for the "overflow;" move some stuff there and delete it from your internal HD, then be sure Time Machine is backing-up both your internal HD and the "overflow" drive.
Third best is, "archive" some stuff to CDs/DVDs or a portable external, and delete the originals. If you use CDs/DVDs, make a couple of copies of each, and store them in a dry place out of the sun. One copy in your safe deposit box would be good. Every couple of years, read them back in and make new copies, as they don't last too long, especially the --cheap-- inexpensive ones.

Trying to import file into iMovie 09, get dialog: "(Insufficient access privileges for operation )"
Anyone know what that might mean?

I believe JVT is not a supported format in iMovie.
If you have QuickTime Pro, transcode your file by exporting and choosing the following settings:
    1. File/Export
    2. in Export choose "Movie to QuickTime Movie
    3. Click Options
    4. In Movie Settings for Video Choose AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec)
    5. Size: 1280x720
    6. Sound Settings: Format Linear PCM - Channel Stereo (but your file is mono... so I guess leave it at that) - Quality: Normal - Linear PCM Settings: Sample Size: 16 - Little Endian
After you exported this file, import it to iMovie '09.

  • "You do not have sufficient access priveleges to rename the item"

    Hi All,
I have a strange problem that has appeared over the last few weeks. I can no longer rename applications, and also have noticed that I am being asked for my admin password to allow for certain tasks that I was not prompted for previously.
For example, I had previously named the application "Cyberduck.app" to "FTP Cyberduck.app" with no problems. If I now attempt to rename the same application (or any other for that matter), I receive the message "You do not have sufficient access priveleges to rename the item".
I have tried several things to resolve this issue:
    * "Disk Utility" > "Repair Disk Permissions" (from booted into the system, and also from the Mac Install CD). Either way, I see a list of permissions that have supposedly been repaired. However, I find that if I immediately run the repair again, the SAME folders and files are repaired (suggesting that they were not actually repaired first time round).
    * "Password Reset" from the Mac install disk.
    * "Repair account ACLs" from the Mac install disk.
All to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas for me (short of reinstalling?). I'd really like to get to the bottom of this issue incase it ever happens again.
    Many thanks in advance,
    AJ

Have you done anything significant to your Mac since around the problems started, such as restoring a user with Time Machine? Do a Finder "Get Info" on your Mac's Application folder and look at the "Sharing & Permissions" sections. Mine shows "system: Read & Write, admin: Read & Write, and everyone Read only". What do you see? Do the same thing to the Cyberduck application. What do you see for it?

I think that permissions repair is highly overrated as a system fixing tool. In any case, see this Apple document on type of permissions repair messages that can be ignored:

can’t create the file “header.jpg.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have suuficient access priveleges.
Please help... I need to copy to a disk... it was working fine until I attached a big project, I tried to delete the project, but still not workng.

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Unable to import pab ldif file. Insufficient Access

I am in the process of upgrading from iMS 5.2 w/iDS 4.16 on an NT box to iMS 5.2 w/iDS 5.1 on Solaris 9.
And , yes I am new to solaris, but that is another story.....
I have successfully installed solaris, iDS 5.2, run the ims_dssetup.pl script, installed iMS 5.2 servers, and gotten everyting to work. I have successfully imported my users by using .ldif files. My problem is that when I try to import the pab entries from an ldif file, all the entries get rejected with the error "Insufficient Access".
I should add that I am doing this on a SunFire V210 with no video card, mouse or keyboard. In other words through the mgmt port and using a windows workstation to access the administration and directory servers.
I'm at wits end.... do I go left or right?
    Thanks in advance..

I am logging into the administration server from my windows workstation as admin (administration server user) and i believe this to be the same user as the configuration directory user admin. I am opening the server group and opening the directory server window. I then go to the configuration tab and click on Console > Import database. I then select the file on my local windows workstation(choosing one on the server seems to not be an option) and click ok.
it then procedes to reject the entries.
I did try to do an ldapadd -d DirectoryManager -w password -f filename.ldif from the ldap server instance directory, but got basically the same results..
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Access Priveleges Error Message - Cannot Trasnfer Songs to iPod Nano

I download songs and then try to transfer from iTunes to my Nano but nothing happens. I've tried both manually and automatic - neither work.
But when I did try to drag the tunes to the iPod icon I got the following error message:
"You do not have enough access priveleges for this action"
Any idea what this means and how do I fix it?
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem, without the Invalid Service Version:
    ---2Gb nano
---Plug in, shows up in device list as a USB drive, even though neither the "manually manage Music" or "Enable Disk Use" is checked.
---139 songs in library, 0 songs on IPOD
---Click "Sync", 1-2 seconds later says updated, still no songs
---IPOD displays "Do Not Connect", if I rclick "Remove Hardware" on taskbar and select "Safely remove USB Drive", Ipod clears and is also removed from Itunes
My Daughter installed this. Smells like the wrong driver is in there, but I can't find an ".inf" file for the ipod. If I delete the USB driver and then plug in the IPOD, it dipays "New HArdware Found Ipod", but the n is says "USB Drive" and reverts to same behavior.

15.Click the Switch Placeholder Definition Role value, and select the admin security role from the drop-down list.
In this step, I can't find "Switch Placeholder Definition Role" in my SiteStudioDemo.xml, so I jumped over this step, but when I run the startSiteStudioDemo.jspx, press ctrl+shift+F5, login with weblogic/weblogic1, IE displayed an error message showing insufficient access to create placeholder, the wls startup console showed the following message:

  • Why can't I rename files?

I have a sub folder that when I click any file in it, the file name doesn't highlight so I can change it.  If I go only one level out of the sub folder, there is no problem with renaming files.
If I copy any of these files to another folder, I can rename them.
I'm an admin on this machine.  If I right click on any file in the sub folder, I have Read/Write access.
Any ideas what is preventing renaming these files?

    Hi Th3r3ad3r,
Could you please attach a screenshot of the same, where only one icon is active even after selecting that file? You can refer http://www.imore.com/screenshot-ipad for taking the screenshot.

If the XML file you are uploading is specifying the creation of a
SchemaObject (e.g. a ClassObject, ValueDomain, ClassDomain, or

way to circumvent this by changing an ACL.

  • "insufficient access privileges"?

My computer claims "insufficient access privileges" when I try to play certain songs I have purchased. These files corrupt or something, and then never play at all, or never play all the way through again. It just happened to a song I JUST bought, it wouldn't play even once!
I can try to redownload it, but it then says the computer is not authorized (it is). When I type in my password to re-authorize it, it tells me this computer is already authorized (duh)... then I try to play it and the loop continues.
It's so frustrating, I a paying for songs then not allowed to listen to them! What's up with this?

Locate the file in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu. Under Ownership & Permissions, change the settings so that you have Read & Write access to it. If it is listed as a folder or package in the Get Info window, you may need to apply the permissions to enclosed items as well.

  • Insufficient access privileges for operation Logic Pro

What means "Insufficient access privileges for operation" when I try to open a *.logic file in a new track?

Is it a project file or template you are trying to save? The Autoload song? I'm no guru or anything, but try saving it in a totally different location, specifically, within your user domain or the Macintosh HD domain--maybe one or the other will allow you to save (for example, if you are currently trying to save your song in a place within your user domain, instead make a folder in Macintosh HD for all your Logic songs, etc.) If you keep Logic songs in the Library->Application Support->Logic folder, either in the user or HD library, that folder can be temperamental anyway. Actually, the less complicated your song and audio file's locations are, you might get an edge in application performance.
OK, finally, try running this nifty new program (it's really more like an automation script), "Maintenance 3.7" (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/maintenance.html). It may repair errors in permissions, etc.
Maybe that stuff will work and someone wiser than I will respond to your post!
    Good luck!

  • Rename files and retain portions of the original filename

I posted a thread about this a while ago, but no solution was given:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2564646
The issue is this: I can't figure out how to rename imported files while also retaining part of the original filename. The images come off of the camera like this:
    DSC_3497.nef
I need to do the following:
+- Retain the unique number that the image already has. I don't want to rename the files by date, location, lunar phase, or some other esoteric identifier. I think having a unique ID for each image (one that shows up in standard OS-level searches on both Mac and PC systems) is useful.+
+- Replace "DSC" with the camera model (D3X), since I use multiple cameras with different resolutions and also need to be able to search for images from a certain camera outside of Aperture (i.e. tags/keywords would not help).+
+- Add a digit prior to the four-digit string to indicate the true numeric sequence of the file. Since Nikon cameras reset the number sequence every 10,000 files, I want to indicate the true sequence number directly in the filename. This will also avoid filename overlaps. It also lets me know how many images I've shot with each camera.+
The intended final result would look like this:
    D3X_63497.nef
Showing the 63,497th image taken with my D3X.
In Aperture's "File Naming" dialog, I don't see a way to split the existing filename in this way. It looks like I can only append or prepend a Custom Name to the Version/Master name. I don't see a way to split the existing filename at the underscore, for example, so that portions of the original filename can be selectively replaced.
This is not about finding a workable naming scheme for Aperture and then renaming all existing files. I spend time on the PC side for various things and also work with a number of people who don't use Aperture but need access to my image library. I also have hundreds of references to existing filenames in various print and web design projects, as well as my Flickr account with 3000+ photos.
Going back and updating all that stuff is not going to happen. But using a System Service to rename files after every import is also pretty tedious.
Any solutions that meet the three criteria outlined above would be greatly appreciated.

    sempervirent,
You're asking for some pretty advanced file naming. Most people aren't going to need that sort of function, so I doubt there will be a hook into Aperture to do such a thing. I suggest using a shell script or Applescript along with EXIFTool to rename files before you import them into Aperture. http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
Retain the unique number that the image already has
If you're not afraid of the command line, it's easy enough to use a tool like awk or maybe perl to parse that sequence number from a well-formatted string like the picture name
Replace "DSC" with the camera model (D3X)
You can use EXIFTool to extract the camera model from the EXIF dat ain the photos
Add a digit prior to the four-digit string to indicate the true numeric sequence of the file.
Good luck with this one. You'll have to do a filename search through all of your previous files to find out what 10,000 you're on. It's possible, but you'd have to do some specialized coding in AppleScript or shell script.

  • Error when changing BPM: "Insufficient access privileges"

    Hello, Logic Express gurus:
I am just a lowly fitness instructor trying to mix her own music (self taught DJ). When changing the BPM here's what I do:
I double click on the song track, then from the window that pops up, I click on the "Factory" pull down menu, then choose "Temp and Pitch Machine". When I change the BPM to the desired tempo and click "Process & Paste", I get the following error:
"Insufficient access privileges for operation (Result code -5000)", then another error stating:
    "Error when creating temp file!"
It used to work beautifully. Can anyone assist me? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, Matt. I tried your suggestion, but it did not make a difference in the tempo. I am bringing in MPEGs, by the way.
My method was working fine until I began getting this error message. Any further suggestions from you or anyone?

  • "Insufficient access privileges for operation" Export Error

I have been working on a very important project in iMovie 09 and I went to go export it into quicktime format, and I get an error that says "The movie could not be exported because an error occurred. (Insufficient access privileges for operation )"
I have the video files on an external drive, and I know based on the error message that it has something to do with the privileges of the video files. I just don't know how to fix it. Hopefully you can help!
    Thanks

This may not be your problem, but you may want to check. By default, permissions are ignored on external volumes. Select the external volume with your video files on it and go to File --> Get Info. At the bottom of that window, make sure that "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked. If it is not, check it. (You may have to click the "lock" and supply your administrator password first.)
If it is checked, then the conflict is with some other file(s), in which case, someone else will have to help you with that.
