Mysterious CPU cycles being eaten!

This is new. It started about a week ago. I've noticed that while browsing certain sites, some with heavy Flash content and some without, my CPU activity shoots up. For the most part, I expect this. If I'm running a Flash game in Chrome or FF, I can see the Flash add-on eating up cycles in AM. What boggles me is that even after closing the application, the CPU is still chugging away. More so, with general browsing (non-Flash material), I still see my CPU usage flying up. It will sit at app. 50%/core and stay there indefinitely. AM shows nothing close to using this amount (at most, 2-3%). My only solution, so far, has been a reboot.
Any thoughts?

  • Build Table Within CPU Cycle Limits ::

I have a table that looks like this:
    :Example Table:
    customer_trail
    database_update_date cust_activity cust_name
    02/11/08 09:00 01/11/08 09:34 Bob
    02/11/08 09:00 23/10/08 09:34 James
    02/12/08 09:00 05/11/08 09:34 John
    02/12/08 09:00 12/12/08 09:34 Mike
    : Definitions:
The database_update_date is the primary key and is the date when everything gets loaded into the database.
The cust_activitity is when the customer came in and requested some work done.
The cust_name is the customers name.
    :SQL:
    SELECT TO_CHAR(cust.cust_activity ,'DD/MM/YY') AS Date_Raised,
    TO_CHAR(cust.cust_activity,'HH24')||':00' AS 24HR_TIME,
    cust.*
    FROM customer_trail cust
    WHERE database_update_date BETWEEN '01-nov-2008' AND '02-nov-2008'
    AND cust_activity BETWEEN '01-nov-2008' AND '01-dec-2008'
AND cust_name IN ( 'Bob', 'Mike', 'Pete')
    :PROBLEM:
My problem is this, due to the fact that the table is so large and we have so many customers. My query times out if I search for a months worth of data using the database_update_date attribute, so I am having to search 1 day at a time to build up a months worth of data in my new table called output. However this is a manual process of me changing the values within database_update_date and saving it to the output table.
Also there is no way to optimise my query and the table can not be changed easily.
So what I need to do is get it to update the database_update_date daily from the 01-nov-2008 to the 01-dec-2008 and store everything that matches the other two conditions without exceeding my CPU Cycle limit.
    Any ideas?

    Davey,
The design of the table has to be such that it supports its use the best way. If the query you showed is the query that it needs to be optimized for, you'll want to look into partitioning and indexing this table. Range partitioning on cust_activity and a local index on (cust_name,database_update_date) maybe?
But there is really too little information here. Is this the main query and a typical one? How many rows are you typically retrieving here? How large is large? Can you show an explain plan and a tkprof file snippet?

  • Explorer.exe uses too much CPU cycles (roughly 50%)... How can I fix this?

    Hi everyone,
In the last two days I have noticed a serious loss in system performance.  The first thing I do when I come accross a performance issue is to make sure that I don't have any scheduled automatic scans running in the background, such as my antivirus.  If they aren't, I then open the task manager and check to see what process(es) is(are) causing the performance issue based on CPU usage.  I discovered that explorer.exe is now regularly using approximately 50% of my CPU power AT ALL TIMES (with fluctuations ranging from as low as 35% to as high as 99%, but 45%-55% is the most common range).
Now I thought this might have been some sort of fluke, so I rebooted several times, and in all cases I find explorer.exe continues to use this hefty amount of CPU power.  This persists even if I leave the system alone (running, but not being used) for 15 minutes or more.
This is causing major performance issues with trying to run any/all other applications on the system, and even worse performance issues if I try to use explorer for something such as directory navigation, file searching, or file access.
I recently made an update to Windows (about a day before this problem arose), so I thought that might be the cause of this, so I ran a system restore to the restore point made before the install.  That didn't fix the problem.  Since the problem has only started in the last two days, I restored to a point three days ago.  That didn't fix it either.  I have since tried to restore to points 5 and 7 days old, and neither of those worked to fix this problem either.
I can use the task manager to end-task explorer.exe, and then restart it using "new task" from the file menu, and this seems to correct the problem.  After doing such a "restart" of explorer.exe, the process no longer uses 50% of my CPU power, and instead uses only 0%-20% depending on what I'm doing.  This, however, is not a viable long-term solution for a couple of reasons:  1) it screws up my tray icons, causing many to disappear even though their parent programs/processes are still running, and causing others to appear even though they shouldn't be there; and 2) subsequent instances of explorer.exe such as for directory navigation still have some performance problems and are prone to crashes.
I need to know how to repair or replace explorer.exe without having to format my hard drive and re-install (either from scratch or using a system recovery disc).  I can try using some sort of shell replacement such as Aston, Emerge, or GeoShell, but I shouldn't have to do that.
It may be that one of my other startup applications is causing some sort of compatibility issue, but that seems unlikely since I haven't made any changes to the system, nor installed any new software other than standard windows updates.
I need help, advice, suggestions, etc., or really anything at all that I can try that might fix this problem.  In the meantime, I am going to boot into safe mode to see if explorer.exe has problems even then (which would solidly indicate a corruption of explorer.exe rather than a compatibility issue or anything else).
Please help if you can.  For reference, I am using an HP Pavilion dv9700 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC, running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit with Service Pack 1.  I have an Intel Core2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz CPU and 3GB of RAM.  My explorer.exe file gives the following information from the Details tab of its Properties window:  file version is 6.0.6001.18000; product version is 6.0.6000.16386; file size is 2.79MB; and modification date is 1/20/2008 at 6:24pm.  As far as I know, that is all correct information and does not indicate that the program file has been replaced by any sort of malicious software.  I also ran a complete scan with AVG Antivirus and found no viruses or other malicious software anywhere on the system (unless you count tracking cookies).
Thank you in advance for any help

I have exactly the same problem!!!  And I concluded that the “AUTO CONNECT” function is the main reason of causing the CPU usage.  If I uncheck the “AUTO CONNECT” from the saved wi-fi connection, then the CPU would remain claim.
But.. Still, it’s very annoying.  So I formatted the hard drive and restore to the original factory condition.  Initially, it was working ok.  But after WINDOW UPDATES, the same problem happens again!!!!!!  May this be the bug from Microsoft??
Any thought??  Any Fix?  Please help!!!!
Yes, I did notice that the problem started after I did a Windows Update.  I can't remember which update it was, but the strange thing about it was that I couldn't fix the problem by restoring the system to a restore point that was made BEFORE the update.  Since I hadn't made any other changes to the system between when it worked and when it stopped working, I can only assume that the update caused the problem, and as such I believe it IS Microsoft's fault.
As to the Auto-Connect feature, I hadn't even thought of that, but since I use my internet ALL THE TIME, it would be really annoying to have to manually connect every boot up.
Which brings me back to the workaround.  If you have Auto-Connect enabled, and you disable WLAN AutoConfig and set it to Manual in your Services interface, then reboot the system, does it solve the CPU issues?  If the answer is yes, then you can do what I'm doing:
    1.  Go to Start, then in the search box type "task" and you should see the Task Scheduler come up as an option.
    2.  Open the Task Scheduler and click on "Create Task..." (by default this should be on the right-hand side of the window in the Actions pane).
    3.  In the General tab, give the task a name and (optionally) a description, and put a check mark in the box at the lower left that says "Run with highest privileges".
    4.  In the Triggers tab, add a trigger.  In the new window, choose "At log on" from the dropdown box at the top, set it to run for "Any user", and then head to the advanced settings section of the window.  Put a check mark in the box for "Delay task for:" and set the delay for one minute.  Make sure that there is a check mark in the box for "Enabled".  Then click OK.
    5.  In the Actions tab, add an action.  In the new window, make sure that "Start a program" is selected in the drop down box at the top (should be the default choice).  In the field where you specify the program to run, type in "SC".  In the "Add arguments (optional):" field, type in "Start wlansvc".  Then click OK.
    6.  Go through the other tabs to make sure you're happy with all of the other settings.  The default values should be just fine, but feel free to change them if you want to.  Then click OK.
    7.  Make sure that WLAN AutoConfig is still set to Manual.
    8.  Re-enable your Auto-Connect feature.
    9.  Reboot the system.
About 60 seconds after you log into your user account you should see a black command window flash onto the screen and then disappear again.  That is your automatic task running and starting up the WLAN AutoConfig servicve.  Another 30-60 seconds later and you should have access to your wireless network and the internet, and you don't have to interact with it or manually start anything.  You can also try setting the task delay to 30 seconds rather than 1 minute, but on my system that wasn't a long enough delay to prevent the CPU usage issues, whereas 1 minute was sufficient.  On my system, it enables the wireless before the system even finishes loading up my normal startup applications like my antivirus, so Idon't even notice a slowdown on the bootup process, let alone any wait time before I can use my internet.
This isn't a fix, and what we really need is for Microsoft to figure out what they did wrong, and fix it, but in the meantime, this works.
    Good luck
On a side note:  Unless Microsoft gets busy on fixing Vista so that it's backwards compatible with my old games, I'm still going to downgrade to XP (like a LOT of people have been doing for various reasons)... assuming I can find XP compatible hardware drivers anyway.  Right now I can get more of my games to run under Linux than I can under Vista, despite the fact that they were programmed to run in a DirectX Windows environment only... that's simply unacceptable.

  • IMac Ram is constantly being eaten up. Advice...

    Hi,
I have a late 2012 iMac with 8gb ram,  1tb HD.    Recently installed Memory Clean and I find there is barely any ram memory available and is often in the 15-100MB range and am connately having to clean it to get back about 2 gb of ram.  Seems odd that the Mac would use 6 GB constantly.  Looked into Activity Monitor but don't know much about what I am looking at.  Here is my report from EtreCheck:
Anyone have expertise or advice on how to fix the problems below?  Thanks so much.

You need to get rid of MemoryClean as that is one of the very bad programs to run...that takes a lot of memory itself and actually does nothing the Mac OS X does itself.
The Mac OS X versions from Lion to Mavericks grab most of the memory in the system, and then allocate the memory as needed.  That makes programs like MemoryClean and CleanMyMac THINK there is not free memory when there actually is.
It is more productive to look at Activity Monitor, Memory and see what is shown at the bottom of the pane...the Memory Pressure is the most important part.  As long as that is green you are fine.  If yellow you are pushing things.
For a system running Yosemite, which has a better memory allocation algorithm than Mavericks:

  • Quit Safari, quits okay, but find CPU still being stolen

I use MenuMeters to watch the usage of my dual G4 CPUs, and I've noticed lately that my CPUs are often being used almost to the max, even with my being idle and no other apps doing anything important.
When I go into Activity Monitor, I find that Safari 3.2 is using HUGE amounts of CPU, even if it is NOT running (according to the Dock and my screen). I use Activity Monitor to quit the Safari and nothing bad seems to happen, just I GET my MAC BACK !
    Has anyone else experienced this?"

What I meant by "size" was the amount of RAM being used by Safari, which has been known to increase exponentially. For example, right now I have 52 tabs open (don't ask ). Per my activity monitor, Safari is alloted 958 MB of RAM and is using about 10 to 15 percent of the CPU (dual-core processors). By contrast on my MacBook Pro, Safari, with 21 tabs, has 200 MB of RAM allotted, using 11 - 14 percent of the CPU. Both machines are using the same Safari 3rd party items, however, more Flash related sites are open on the iMac.
Usually, high CPU spikes from Safari point to file corruption heating up the processor (I've seen a corrupted Flash plug-in trigger this effect), a poorly coded web site, or OS X system problems.
What utility do you use to repair HD? Short of TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior, I'd say other products on the market are somewhat lacking in their ability to pinpoint oddities on the drive.

  • Multi Slider Slide control is sucking cpu cycles

Here is a control (see attachment) that just by it's very presence on a front panel sucks 25% cpu on my machine.  It appears to be the 3 slider slide that is causing the problem.  I find that I can replace the control (it starts as a Silver Horizontal Point Slide) and it settles down until the next time the vi is loaded into memory again.  Anybody seen this before? FYI - I created this control so that it appears as a cluster datatype with 3 numerics, the first being the visible slider which is the current value, the second numeric being the lower limit and the third numeric being the upper limit.

25% is one core on a 4 core machine. Does that sound about right?
Why is the control so much larger than needed and why is the scale visible, but hidden underneath the cluster boundary?
In any case, I see 100% use on one core after loading your VI (LabVIEW 2015), but as soon as I slighly move one of the green sliders, the CPU drops to zero. Something seems in a weird state initially. Hard to tell...

  • My complete hard drive is being eaten by something

Serious problem here. My hard drive is constantly 100% full. Even when I delete files, 1 minute later my disk utility shows that all 250gb of 250gb is in use. I guess some mysterious file is eating all the remaining space. I deleted so much I think I have less than 70gb on my macbook right now. However, it shows that everything is full. I can't do a lot with my macbook right now, even receive attachments in my email or download a program that might solve this problem.
It really is not a problem of having too many files in my hd, I removed plenty.
I looked on all the other forums but couldn't find a right answer.
Hope somebody can help me with getting this space free! Thanks a lot

    Timdie Tim,
give the freeware application omnidisksweeper (http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/) a try. This app scans your whole hard drive and shows you which folder takes up how much space.
You may have some hidden folders in which a lot of data is stored. Omnidisksweeper also shows you these folders.

  • Windows 8.1 CPU Usage being used by Service Hosts

My problem has been persistant for several of days and I really need my CPU usage. Some Service Hosts using sometimes up to 50% of my CPU usage. I have tried using the Refresh tool in the advanced settings
which deletes everything installed to the computer to no prevail. I have even come to the idea of resetting to factory settings but I am beginning to think that the problem will still persist. I have seen several people have this problem with no solution that
is visible. I have not installed anything to make my CPU usage do this, I have clicked Run then typed in Services.msc and did some things in there. I saw somewhere that the Windows Modules Installer was one of those "CPU-eaters" along with Windows
Search, so I set there Start Up Type to Manual and put them to a halt. I will put a picture for these Service Host files and how much power each one individually takes. Before the Refresh I would click on the services and then try to end their task, still
no prevail. Please tell me how I can fix this, I don't really see a need to post my speculations for my computer since it is happening to a lot of other people on Windows 8.1, not a selected few. I hope someone will read my post through and help me, because
this is troublesome and limits the performance of my PC. Thank you for reading, I hope you have some solutions for my situation.
    Images
As for the first image, I am showing you the Windows Module Installer Worker using up some CPU, and I am not installing a Windows update by the way.
As for the second image, I really don't understand what is happening since they are labeled all the same but numbers and networks. But still, they are eating at my usage, just one service taking up 40% is uncalled for in my books. Also,
as the Service Host rises, the System coincides with it too, rising at the same time. I really don't know how to go about fixing the Hosts. Maybe a downgrade to Windows 7 which I don't have? The most recent version of Windows I have on file is Windows Vista,
and well, I don't really want to go that far back.
When I tried to submit my question, I got some red text saying "Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account.", and I don't really feel like waiting for that,
so you are just going to have to go off of the summaries I gave you. Sorry.

    Hi,
Can you use process explorer to narrow down the culprit?

  • Hard drive issues with new imac 27 inch empty space being eaten up

    Hi There
I have been having a strange problem with my new imac . Ever since i got it the hard drive has been making sounds even when i have not been using the computer . It sounds as if it is loading a file . I looked at disk activity in activity monitor and it showed that the disk was being written to every few seconds . Then out of curiosity I did a get info on the disk and happened to notice that every few seconds approximately 500k gets written to the disk .
Can I some how track these writes , to determine which process is causing them?
Can't imagine it being a virus since it's been happening since i took it out of box .
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks for the help
    Mrfish

If your machine is brand new, it could be Spotlight indexing your drive. If so, it's nothing to worry about and it will subside soon.
Here is some info about Spotlight that goes beyond what's available in OS X Help:

  • 1st Gen MacPro Wake Up, HD activity takes up all CPU cycle w spinning ball

Since I have added an external HD (750GB) to my n-basestation as an NAS, every time I wake up my Mac Pro, the HD will be busy doing something (I have no idea what it's doing as I can get the activity monitor to come up until the HD stop doing whatever it's doing) for somewhere between 5 minutes to 15 minutes before the CPU is freed up to attend to other stuff like reconnecting the Mac to the basestation, connect iChat to the AIM server, etc.
This never happens prior to attaching the HD. It's extremely annoying. Anyone have any idea as to how to get the computer to wake up right away?
    Thanks,
    Sherman

A lot of what you describe sounds like a failing HDD. The one failing of OS X, is that Disk Utility and AHT tend to rely on the drive's internal SMART diagnostics, which isn't always accurate. Sometimes you need to actually stress the drive a bit to find the problem.
And I've seen many iMacs with failing HDDs that then start heating up abnormally, which then causes the fans to kick in (if you're lucky, some have had their logic boards cooked) to try and blow out the excess heat.
Now you seem to be confused as to what system you have. In the subject you say it's an iMac G4, but your signature line says it's a G5, which I'm more inclined to believe since you say it has iSight. Unfortunately for you, that is the model where Apple changed the way the iMac is taken apart. Used to be pretty simple. Loosen a few screws and pull the back cover off. Starting with your model, you have to remove the display to get at the HDD.
Still, all things considered, having the HDD replaced is pretty cheap compared to some of the other things it could be. Since this is a G5 era system, there's always the possibility that the logic board has some bad capacitors, which would mean the system's done for.
I'd really recommend you take it to an Apple Store or local AASP shop where they can run some more detailed diagnostics on it. I'm betting they'll either find a bad HDD or bad caps on the logic board. The former shouldn't be outrageously expensive, the latter means start planning the funeral.

  • After update 6.1.3 email keeps crashing and battery life is being eaten up after restoring my IPhone 5

After the newest update my email app keeps crashing. When I deleted the account and tried to log back in it would crash and I couldn't log back in. So I tried to restore my Iphone and it fixed some of the other problems I was having however not the email problem. And now it has created a new one, my battery life is bing eaten away far too quickly! If anyone can help please try!!

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • [solved] kacpid eat CPU cycle

    Hi,
I've installed ArchLinux (x86_64) today on my new HP 8740w laptop (Core-i7 Q720 + nVidia quadro FX 3800m).
    With kernel26-2.6.34-1 from testing.
kacpid but 96.5% of the first core all the time as reported by ps aux.
    I've upgraded the BIOS.
I use Arch on another laptop (HP 4510s) every day with the same kernel without problem.
    Result of ps aux:

    EDIT:
There is a know bug in some HP laptop BIOS. Kernel 2.6.35 (git version) resolve this issue, but it need to add the line "echo disable > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe01" in /etc/rc.local
I'm waiting for the Arch version of 2.6.35 now :-)

    Hi rippleAdder,
Update your BIOS as this bug come from the new HP bios on some laptop (mainly EliteBook) and reset to factory setting. There is a problem with "run always the fan whith AC adapter connected" or something like that (i can't look at my bios now because i'm compiling a big software).
The patch was applied to the 2.6.35 tree after the rc3 release candidate.
Please try this patch with the kernel source 2.6.35-rc3 with the last git patch (i'm using the 20100625 version) and add tjhis patch (found somewhere on the kenel bugzilla):

After compiling/installing the new kernel, add
    echo disable > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe01
    to /etc/rc.local
    Restart with the new kernel.
I've made a PKGBUILD file (tweaked from another kernel release) for this. Please ask if you need it. It's not very good but do the job.

  • Problem with Java eating up CPU cycles

I am not sure if this is the place to post this but there isn't really a problems area I could find. I have an xserve with a single CPU (older type, not Intel) and I noticed that the blue lights on the front were lit up solid. I did some looking around and found out they are CPU lights, so I did "top -o cpu" and came up with this as taking up all my CPU when it is idle:
    67 ?? Rs 1509:18.90 java -Djava.endorsed.dirs=/Library/Tomcat/common/endorsed -classpath /Library/Java/Home/lib/tools.jar:/Library/Tomcat/bin/bootstra
This came from a "ps -A | grep java" command, but as you can see it has been running for a while. I have tried to kill the process but it will not go down. How do I shut it down and keep it from doing this again?

It's clear that there is some Java based application running on your machine, but there isn't enough information to determine what, specifically.
you could try using ps -axwwwp <pid> where pid is the process ID in question (in the above example, the PID is 67. The 'w' switches tell PS to display more information about the process name which might provide additional hints as to what the process is.

  • ITunes eating CPU cycles when idle?

I'm using the latest version of everything (OS X 10.4.10 & iTunes 7.4.2). On my Dual 2.5GHz G5 tower, iTunes seems to gobble up a lot of processor cycles when it's just sitting there doing nothing. In activity monitor, iTunes routinely is eating up 10-15% of cycles when it's just sitting there, not playing. That seems like a lot of activity for an idle app. Is this a bug?

I found that if you close the itunes window (not hide or minimize it) and use a menubar controller like You Control Tunes http://www.yousoftware.com
My iTunes now idles at 3 (before it was 25-30) and averages at about 15 when playing music
