Mysterious memory disappearance

I have far less available space on my HDD than I think I should. I can only account for about half of the used space. Are there hidden files or applications on my machine? I know over the years `i've loaded and deleted some large programs andfolders, but i've gone thru all the folders, using "get info" and the sizes dont add up to what my machine tells me is used. any help?

There are some hidden files you won't be able to get to without knowing they exist.
Instead of doing things the manual way, get OmniDiskSweeper here: http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/
It will do an inventory of all your files and folders and show you where your space has gone.
Note: Do NOT delete files/folders you do not recognize. The only exception to this is that any files in /private/var/log can be deleted if they are large.

  • Hard disk memory disappearing

    hi
i have a power book G4 running panther OSX 10.3.9 about 4 years old but the hardrive is only 2 years old.
it's memory filled up recently so i removed 3 gigs worth of memory. i then downloaded a pdf form only for all the free memory to disappear. so i cleaned out more memory about 1.4 gigs worth only for that to disappear as well. is this a virus or a consequence of running the computer with hardly any memory.
any ideas will be greatfully received

    Hi Zacster!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much free space is available?
To find that info, click once on the Hard Drive icon to highlight it.
Press the Command + I keys to Get Info.
    What is displayed for:
    Capacity: ?
    Available: ?
    Used: ?
As Thomas Bryant posted, insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.
    Authored by Dr Smoke:
Problems From Insufficient RAM And Free Hard Disk Space

Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System Maintenance, authored by Gulliver
Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke
Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
    I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • N97 E: / Mass Memory disappeared!

I have recently purchased an N97 and it's worked fine, up to now.
A few days ago i turned it on, only to find that all of my photos and music were missing.
So I plugged the N97 into my PC to see where they had gone and my E: folder has gone.
The 32GB isn't on a memory card? There wasn't any memory card in the box when i purchased it, and besides, it was showing the 32GB mass storage up until a few days ago.
    http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq157/frithleeds/n97.png
As you can see in the above link, there is no E: folder present.
How can I get the mass storage folder back?
    Many thanks.

The 32gb mass storage is built into the phone and not a removable memory card. I have never heard of the mass storage disappearing and so don't know what to suggest. Resetting may work if it is software related but it could be a hardware problem as well, which unfortunately we can't help you with. Best thing to do is probably to send it to your local Nokia Point so they can check it out properly.

  • Memory disappears

My Early 2008 MacBook Pro has 4GB of memory.  When I first boot, utilities such as Memory Clean, iClean Memory, and iStat show the memory allocation totaling the aforementioned 4GB.  Within an hour, a full GB of memory just disappears.  The total memory gradually drops to somewhere around 3GB.  Even if I boot into safe mode and don't launch any apps the memory still disappears.  Any suggestions?
    Regards,

  • Nokia Belle N8 C Memory disappearing

This is a bit of a long post, so please read it all in the hope you can offer some real support!
I know this issue has been raised across a number of posts, but none I've seen has managed to give me any help in trying to sort out my issue with the C drive of my phone quickly disappearing.  I've currently got about 20MB free on the disk, but when I tried updating Nokia Maps through Nokia Store, the update used up all free memory on C and failed in update.
I have y-broswer and x-plore installed on my phone, so I should in theory be able to get to all of the cache, downloads and general rubbish that apps keep filling up my C drive with.
However, when I go through all the folders I can see and tot up the amount of memory in use, I seem to be a way off the 256MB that should be available...
C:/resource is by far my biggest fodler, with about 20MB of files in there.  I've been through all locations but cannot find where all the data is!  My directory c:/private appears as completely empty when I try looking at it, which seems to be where most people are directed to clean their memory.
One thing I have been doing is auto-backup of my phone to the external memory card which runs overnight - I've read elsewhere that people have reported this to have been incrementally eating away at C drive, but I can't find any temp files that would explain this.
It is also often said that Social image cache (and other apps caches) use up plenty of C drive an so these should be cleared out.  Can anyone point to specific directory locations where this can be found? Again, after much searching there seems to be very little that I can find to delete.
It's getting to the point where I'll have to do a soft or hard reset and start again and just hope for the best...but if anyone can post how to clean up C drive it'd be very much appreciated.  Most people just seem to say 'clean social cache' and the likes, but this isn't very helpful if we don't know where to look!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi all,
Nokia must do something about the low phone memory on the Nokia N8-00. Why did they remove the option of storing messages on the mass memory and why are emails stored on the phone memory instead of mass memory? Temporary files stored on C: Private should be deleted by the phone itself instead of using means that will be harmful to your phone and void your warranty i.e Hacking. Nokia do something about this shrinking phone memory on the Nokia N8-00 yet all the applications are installed on mass memory other than the applications that are part of the Nokia Belle OS. I hope that this will be rectified by the next software update that Nokia will provide for the Nokia N8-00. Concerning Maps Suite 2.0 I wished that Nokia could completely remove the previous version of maps to free phone memory and install the latest version that will be replaced the free memory lost during installation phase instead of eating 20 MB more from the phone memory or they make a fix to Maps Suite 2.0 that will install completely on mass memory. Concerning Microsft Apps I wished that Nokia could fully make it install on mass memory rather than installing parts of it on phone memory and mass memory that stills ends up eating 20-15 MB more from the phone memory.
Many Nokia N8-00 users who are running Nokia Belle have not updated or are rather afraid to update to Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 and Microsoft Apps because of the fear that their phone memory will decrease rapidly causing the device to become unresponsive or slow affecting the overall performance of the device. I wish that Nokia will overclock the CPU speed of the Nokia N8-00 to make the device a bit faster than it is.

  • Memory Disappearing after adding Raid Controller

    I have a Lenovo D20 with 2x x5650 CPUs. I have 9 sticks of 2gb 1333 ECC UDIMM.
The problem  I am running into is that after I installed a hardware Raid card, the system only picks up 12gb of memory instead of the installed 18gb, and if i take the card out it'll go back to 18gb.
I've updated to the latest BIOS and still doesn't make a difference. Does anyone have any idea why?

Which specific slots do you think are not workign correctly (ID the slots per the silkscreen on the motherboard)?  Watching the system count memory won't tell you this, only swapping DIMMs in and out will.
Can you provide the vendor part number for the DIMMs you are using?
What happens when you put memory only into the DIMM slot(s) you suspect aren't working and try to boot the system?  Does it boot or does it give you a beep code sequence?
I can't think of any reason why installing a PCIe device would affect the amount of memory being detected within BIOS.  Cards can, however, greatly affect the amount of memory that shows available within the OS.
Often, when there's a mismatch between the amount of physically installed memory and the amount of memory being detected in BIOS (in the BIOS setup menus), it's because of DIMM(s) that are not seated correctly.  Obviously the latches should be closed, but sometimes even when closed I've seen a DIMM not report correctly.  When installing/reseating, try pushing on the center of the DIMM evenly instead of out near the corners.

  • G4 and La Clie 120GB - Mystery Memory Hogging File

I have an iMac G4 running 10.4.11 with an external firewire La Clie 120GB hard drive.
The "Get info" says the La Clie is using up 71GB. But if I use the Finder and add up all the folders and only get 25GB used.
Which means my HD has a mystery file that is about 46GB. How can I figure out what is going on?

    chi_boy wrote:
    Any freeware ideas?
No problem. The Terminal is free. Pop open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities/ and type the following:
    cd /Volumes/LaCie
    du -hd 1
The first command will navigate to your external drive. Replace the word LaCie with the name of your external drive, and enclose in quotation marks if necessary. The second command is an acronym for "disk usage"; -h means human readable, and -d means that the results will be displayed to a folder depth of only one. The results may take a few minutes to print out depending on how much stuff there is to count.

  • HD memory disappears upon export

I recently updated my Retina MacBook Pro to the 10.8.2 Supplement update 2.0 and now Motion is acting odd.  I've been working on a project for the past few days, prior to updating, whenver I exported a video it would work as predicted.  Now, after the update, I can see my Hard Drive space just plummet.  I'll start out with about 64gigs of space and before the file is done be exported it drains to just shy of 4 gigs!!  I then begin to get warnings that my OSX Startup Disc full and that I need to quit or pause apps.
The project I'm working on is a very simple animation that runs just shy of 25 seconds.  The final file that is outputted is about 650mb in size.  This is not that big of a project and I have no idea what requires that much hard drive space.
One other note, the memory does eventually return after about 20 minutes

turn off (or "down") autosave!! and delete the files -- or get an external drive.
At least check your autosave settings.
    1) You can find out where autosave is saving backups in Preferences > Cache > Autosave
reset the Keep at Most: to about 3 - 5 (if Motion crashes, you usually only need one!)
    2) You can go to the path listed in Autosave and dump a lot of the older files
PS - you can also delete the Retiming cache...

  • There's this mysterious appearing/disappearing icon in my Dock...

...that every so often spontaneously opens up, then closes right away. I can never get a good look at it, but it appears to be a white "page" (like the TextEdit dock icon) with what looks like a green part in the upper left corner and a black part in the lower right area.
What application might that icon belong to? And should I worry about it?

To clarify, it doesn't happen after each loading of a webpage -- I'm not even sure if it is triggered by opening a web page at all. Sometimes I'll just be watching the screen and it will happen.
Again, the trouble is that the icon just appears and disappears in the Dock before I can get a good look.
I'll try to take a full-screen snapshot (Command-Shift-3) the next time it appears, and hopefully I'll catch it in time...

  • Upon start up, got "HD needs to expand" message and then memory disappeared

Last night I had nearly 8GB of free space on my PowerBook. This morning, everything was fine before I left for work. I returned home to get one of those exclamation messages upon turning on my computer saying something to the effect of "your HD needs to expand, you will not be able to make changes during this process". Okay, fine. It did that and I looked at my memory, it's down to 4GB.

  • MacBook Pro memory disappears; so sluggish it's useless

My MacBook Pro has 2 GB of memory. On start-up I'll have 1.4 to 1.6 GB of free memory. Shortly after starting up, all my free memory drops to 20 or 30 MB, wired will be 180 to 220 MB, active 200 to 500 MB, and inactive about 1.4 GB, or I may have 700-900 MB of Active an Inactive. Typical open apps would be Finder, Safari, TextEdit, Activity Monitor, MenuCalClock, and Default Folder.
I have a Boot Camp partiton, and I occasionally run Vista Ultimate using VMWare Fusion. Both Leopard and Vista are often so sluggish they are useless.
Sometimes a restart will restore over a gig of free memory and the computer is pretty snappy, even if I start Vista, and it may be okay for hours.
Why should so much memory be allocated to active and inactive? After an initial data entry involving Numbers, the computer is idle for 30 to 60 minutes. It is set to never sleep. Display doesn't sleep for one hour; screen saver is running. Yet upon attempting to use it, it is almost totally unresponsive. The inactive memory seems totally unreasonable. No recently closed applications. Whatever is stored there is not facilitating responsiveness..
    Daru

Are you using Time Machine? Have you excluded your Fusion Virtual Machines-folder?
Oscar, thank you for this. I've suddenly got a problem with Time Machine backups, and maybe that is because I didn't exclude them.(Oops! Just discovered I can't exclude them. When I select the Boot Camp partition to exclude, the Exclude button is grayed out.) MacBook Pro's BU failed, can't enter Time Machine (backing up to Time Capsule), couldn't repair backup or sparse bundle, so I'm deleting it and starting again. (But just now my iMac's Time Machine BU failed also; told to choose a new disk, Time Capsule is "read only". But Get Info says it is read and write...)
But regarding the MacBook Pro: A month or so ago I had a bad battery get so hot it burned out my hard disk and Apple had to replace it. I'm wondering if I have some leftover problems... Trouble is, it's a hundred mile roundtrip to the nearest Authorized Service Provider...
I've allocated 512 MB to Vista; I'm going to increase it to see if it makes a difference with Vista, but discovering what mires down Leopard is essential.
External storage is Time Capsule; all three computers back up to it. I can't reproduce the sluggishness, so it is difficult the isolate the cause. I'm not sure if it continues when all apps are closed and only the finder is active. I'll check that next time it happens.
No third party modifications that I can recall... I've used MacPilot to dump some caches and repair preference files...
Hard disk is partitioned: 80 GB Leopard, 32 GB Vista. I have 38 GB free for Leopard,11 GB free for Vista.
I've run Disk Utility, TechTool Pro, and Disk Warrior. Doing so seems to improve the situation for a short while. But sometimes just restarting fixes it...
I'll check up on your other questions (new user account, spotlight, finder only, as I get a chance to do so, today or tomorrow. (I'm writing this from my iMac, which is always perky...)

  • Mysterious log disappearance....

    Hi -
My issue is on a production oracle 10.2.04 CPU19 DB.
It is running in archive log mode, with 2 physical syandby's (dataguard).
I have run into a strange issue, where a online redo log (sequence 74852) is simply no longer on record in the DB in v$archived_log.
Normally, if the log is deleted from the OS (in this case, windows 2003 R2 x64), I still see it in there, but just marked deleted.
This one simply has no record in v$archived_log for sequence 74852 at all.
It is not on the disk either.
All logs before & after this one, in sequence, are there in v$archived_log and the OS disk.
The alert log does not seems to show anything out of the ordinary, it shows that the missing sequece was archived ok.
I discovered this oddity when both my physical standby's were both backed up waiting for this log sequence (74852).
Normally I just copy it over from the primary manually, & this is when I discovered it was not on the disk on the primary, and not in v$archived_log.
I can't restore the log from backup either because it was from after my nightly backup.
Has anyone seen this before ? (I'm guessing a bug) ?
    Thanks,
    Nathan

    Hi -
The missing log occured about 3:13 am this morning, so it will not show up in the primary log queries.
I CAN see the redo log in v$log_history, but not where it was ever archived in v$archived_log.
    Also, my log_archive_min_succeed_dest=1 and log_archive_local_first=true
(I only have 1 local archive dest, and 2 remotes - 1 for each standby).
So, no matter what, oracle should have archived sequence# 74582, or halted the instance until it was done.

  • HD Memory Disappearing

I have a 250 GB HD and I should have 170 GB free. 2 days ago, I was working in Dreamweaver and got an error message stating that I didn't have much free space on my HD and that I should delete files to free up room. I looked and according to the Activity Monitor, I had 0 space on my HD. I restarted the computer, checked the Activity Monitor, and I had 170 GB free (like I should have). Today, same thing happened except I wasn't using Dreamweaver; I was just web browsing. The computer said I had 0 space on my HD, so I restarted the computer and again I had 170 GB free. That was about 30 minutes ago. Since then, I've been trying to research what is going on and my HD space is already down to 157 GB, but I've not saved anything to the HD. Any ideas what's up? It's kinda freakin' me out. The only applications open are Safari, Activity Monitor, and System Profiler.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the before I restarted the first time this happened, the space free on the HD was jumping around from 0, to 30GB, to 12GB, to 0, to 30GB, etc.

I'm generally a fan of DiskWarrior for this sort of repair, One T. For directory repairs of this type it still reigns supreme.
On the other hand, both TTP and Drive Genius handle a wider range of tasks.
If you don't already have one, though, my usual firm advice to people is, now that external drives are so cheap, "buy an external FireWire backup drive first".
Yes, a good utility can "save the day" sometimes, but nothing beats the security of a daily updated backup.
Combined with a good cloning utility like SuperDuper , and a regualr backup process there aren't many situations that it won't let you get out of.
    Cheers

  • Memory disappeared...

I have a Quad G5 that had 2.5 Gig of RAM in it. I was working on a DVD project when my machine locked up. Upon restart, I noticed that my machine now only shows the 512 RAM that came with the machine, and not the additional 2GIG stick that I bought. The machine was working fine for the past month or so. Any ideas what caused this, or what I can do to get the 2.5 GIG to show back up?
I'm not super technical, so I could use the help.
    Thanks a million.

The first thing I would do is check and make sure my RAM is seated properly, and re-seat it. See if it shows up.
Run Apple Hardware Test from the system disks. It will check your RAM.
Memtest( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17156 ) may be of some help as well. It will take quite a while so get comfy.
    I hope you get'er fixed.

Using the iStat Nano widget, I've been monitoring my memory usage when running iTunes. When I first start the program, memory usage jumps to 600 MB. The longer iTunes is open, the more and more memory disappears, whether I'm actively using the program or not (i.e. listening to music). Eventually, this causes a hard crash. By hard crash I mean that I must use the on/off button to reboot the machine. I have had this problem since getting my computer (in mid-March), so there has been at least one iTunes update since then that has not fixed this issue. (I have a previous post on this topic called "iTunes freezing" that was made before I realized that it was caused by a memory leak.)
I am very, very pleased with my MacBook Pro and I realize that this is not a hardware issue. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Are there any plans to fix it in a future update?
Thanks in advance for any comments, suggestions, or solutions!

I posted a question this evening on what sounds like the same issue: the link is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=548752
I think your original post makes clear that this issue is about iTunes itself, it's not about any devices or iPods, not is it to do with the Intel or non-Intel processors... I will try looking at the Memory stats too.
What baffles me is that I had been using iTunes 6 for quite a long time (and only updating it manually, not automatically) before I ever experienced this.
My hunch (but what do I know?) is that my initial freeze might have happened for some other reason (too many applications working hard at once, as sometimes happens -- though I have had this happen reasonably often on the PowerBook it is extremely rare on the G5) -- and then in the course of that freeze / crash something in iTunes got corrupted (perhaps the database file that allows iTunes to navigate the iTunes library?)
By the way, what is the technical name for the total freeze thing (i.e. no beachballs, just complete loss of the mouse and keyboard response, clock stops, no shortcuts working, only PowerButton allows you to shut down).
Has anyone with this issue tried uninstalling iTunes (by Trashing the App) and reinstalling from a newly-downloaded copy? (I might try that ...)
