N97 ringtone mixup

I just noticed that sometimes N97 doesn't ring the very ring tone I've assigned to the contacts rather it rings the ringtone defaults to the profile. Any ideas why this happens?
I can confirm
a. All my contacts are in the phone memory. 0 contacts in the sim.
b. No duplicated contacts in the address book. No duplicated phone numbers in individual contact details.
c. I haven't downloaded any ringtones from web. All ring tones in use are preinstalled tones.
d. Although it fails to pick up the correct ringtone, it displays callers details (name, picture etc...) correctly.
e. Finally this happens occassionally (but still its not acceptable to me as I depend on the ringtone to identify the contact's group as in work, uni, family, business, clients etc...)
Any ideas guys?
Thanks.

  • N97 Ringtone Issues

Bought an N97 last Friday on release day in the UK.
Have had a whole host of NSeries phones from the N70, N73, N95/6 etc..
I use separate ringtones assigned to a range of about 10 contact groups and assign them from Contacts > Groups > Options > Ring Tone.  This then updates the ringtone for all the contacts in the group.
I also set default ringtones in all the Profiles that are not silent.
This was never a problem in previous Nseries phones but what I am finding is that at times I get the standard Nokia tune then next call will use the correct ringtone and after that it is the nokia tone again.  I am also getting a drop out in the tone about 2 secs in for about a second then starts ringing again.
I initially put this down to the fact that my phone is connected to computer and the mass storage and memory card are locked down, so with this in mind I moved them to the phone memory, not ideal but thought give it ago and I converted them to all 3gp files as assigning through the group would not show anything but 3gp or AAC.
However the issue still exists and is getting really annoying.  It is having no problem with ringtone selected for incoming mail, messages, calendar and alarm clock.
    Anyone else experiencing this?????

Had a problem with my N97 last night whereby whenever my girlfriend called, the phone would ring with the default Nokia tone. All other calls rang with my personalised ringtone.
After playing around with the phone I found the reason was I had tagged her picture onto her contact details but used a full 5MP photo. After editing the picture and dropping it down to 640*480 the phone rang with the tone i'd set.
It looks like due to the image size the phone was taking a while to display the caller image and then play the tone as well
Thought it would be worth a mention incase anyone else comes across this problem

  • N97: Can you set a ringtone for all unknown caller...

I just moved to a Nokia N97 from a Palm Treo Pro. So far so good, but one thing I cannot seem to find any information on is whether or not you can set ringtones for all unknown callers, like you can on a palm? This was one of my favorite features for palm phones.
If you cannot set a specific ringtone for all unknown callers on the handset itself, does anyone know of an application I can download that would enable this?
    Thanks for your time!
Message Edited by lisadahl on 31-Aug-2009 09:48 PM

While you're waiting for that application. You can put everyone in a group and set specific tones for each group then the default ring tone will sound when unknown people call you

The Music Library on the N97 Mini automatically finds all music tracks on the phone, but does anyone know if I can stop it from adding mp3 ringtones?
The ringtones are saved in the 'Ringing Tones' folder, separate from any music tracks, but the Music Library still finds them, meaning if I 'play all' from the library, it plays ringtones too.
A solution would be very much appreciated!

the only solution is by adding your full tracks in a playlist

  • N97 - using songs as ringtones issue

If i choose a random contact and push edit I can choose ringtone. I get a menu with different folders, and i would pick the music folder. But, just a few of my songs from the musiclibrary shows up. But if i go to the musicplayer I am able to take whatever of my 500 songs and link it to a contact. has this something to do with type of file or?

I solved it! I had a musicfolder with som music just inside that, and more music inside folders in the musicfolder, and when i deleted those other folders and just put all my songs in the musicfolder - it worked. Seems like the n97 has some trouble handling lots of folders inside folders

this bug is still there in new firmware.. and it has nothing to do with the image size or ringtone.. i have gone in via file manager and set the ringtone to a file on the c: drive.   and even when i get calls from people not in my phone book so it is not trying to load any images (except the default caller image which is also on my c drive) it plays the wrong ringtone.. mostly appears to be when locked which is most of the time since it autolocks and i lock it so that when in the case no buttons are accidentially pushed.. this needs to be fixed asap

  • How to hide ringtones from Music Library on N97 mi...

    Hello,
The title speaks for it's self i think.
I want to hide my personal ringtones (on the mass storage drive) from my Music library as it is quite annoying to hear your ringtones when listening to good music... The folder with the Nokia ringtones I can't find....
So, how can I do this?
    Greetings,
    Redmer

There is a very easy way to do this. This method does not involve keeping your sound files 'hidden'. This means your files will still be accessible from other apps. Also, you DO NOT not need to hack your phone for this.
    http://lagenda4046s603rd.blogspot.com/2010/08/13-all-mods-pack-in-sis.html
This little app will let you do exactly what you want. The music library will now only look in E:\music (memorycard>'music' folder)
HOWEVER, when you install it, it will still show your ring tones and other sound files, but it wont show any further sound files that you add to your phone unless you put them in E:\music. THERE IS A VERY EASY WAY AROUND THIS:
BEFORE INSTALLING Just hide all the sound files you don't want in your music library (make files 'hidden'), then install '13 all mods' (link above), then unhide those sound files.
Now your music library will ONLY show music in E:/music AND your other sound files remain unhidden, so other apps can use them normally.
    Enjoy!
There are also other options during install. All of the features are optional during install. Your phone may not support all the options, but hopefully it will work for the music library function.
When you install, it may say 'phone not supported', BUT INSTALL IT ANYWAY. This just means that not all the extra options will work for your phone (e.g. disable nokia hands), but you should expect the music thing to work properly.
Note: this app will not show an icon in you menu, but it will be in you app list in 'application manager'. There, you can uninstall it, and this will undo any features you selected i.e. it will show all your sound files, ring tones and anything else you selected etc.
    Regards and Good luck

  • Ringtone sounds 'droopy' and slow on N97

    Hi,
As I'm discovering some of the little annoyances about this phone I will endeavour to have someone at Nokia to please advise me. Lates booby is the ringtone...................... Everytime the phone rings it sounds like it is playing on a tape cassette player with barely enough battery to turn the spools. how can this possibly be when everything is digital? The sound is horrible and droopy and slow!
Has anyone else had this problem?

All fixed after several firmware updates. Pity the same can't be said for the horrible Nokia Ringtone issue. This problem has not been fixed and is exacerbated by the fact that Nokia regardless of how many emails I send them do not respond any further than the automated reply stating they will get back to me within 48 hours.
Never happens.............Where did it all go wrong Nokia? When did you decide that silence was the best policy?

  • My N97 experience... not all bad

When I first received my N97 at the end of June with its v10 firmware it was truly awful!
I actually went through 3 handsets in 10 days.
I experienced freezing, crashing, incorrect ringtones, slow GPS and "Out of Memory" issues constantly. I was forced, because of the low C: drive, to install widgets, themes and as many app's as possible to Mass Memory, which in turn led to problems of their own when connecting to PC Suite in anything other than PC Suite mode. I could not even install some of Nokia's own app's as they would take up the precious C: drive.
It took me quite awhile to adjust the Destinations settings, using trial and error, so that I used my home wifi and 3G whilst out.
Then, about two or three weeks later, v11 was released on Vodafone and I upgraded the firmware, using PC Suite, with no problem and was quite pleased that I did not have to reinstall everything from scratch. The only change that I noticed with v11 was that my widgets worked a little better and that my thumbnails loaded quicker. However, the phone still gave me "Out of Memory" errors, crashed and was sluggish and unresponsive to touch, sometimes requiring 3/4 taps to get it working.
Like the majority of N97 owners, I was not a happy bunny and felt ripped off when I compared the N97 to my N95 and N95 8GB. I was thoroughly cheesed off with having to go through manually clearing the browser cache every day, not being able to have theme effects on or use anything except the built in themes for fear of crashing. Also the GPS was still taking far too long to get a mediocre lock.
Then around the end of August it was announced that v12 would be launched to address some of these problems and I eagerly awaited its coming. As with all the N97 firmware releases, the Continent version was released first, this was then to be followed by the UK CV (Country Variant) at some time in the future and finally the operator branded version even later still.
It was at this point that my frustration with the N97 got the better of me and I took the decision to change the product code to the Euro one and risk voiding my warranty to get v12 that much quicker, all went surprisingly smoothly and I was able to obtain the v12 firmware weeks ahead of Vodafone's release.
The v12 firmware did bring about some minor changes but not enough to stop my handset from crashing, freezing, every now and then. I still found the phone to be sluggish and unresponsive. I was still having to spend a lot of time "nursing" it by Clearing C: drive, which was hovering around 15MB and watch my RAM usage at around 10Mb. I still could not use anything other than the built-in theme with no effects for fear of overloading the pitiful RAM.
I was also using the beta Nokia Photo Browser as this seemed to display quicker and better than the Gallery. Also, album art was a bit hit and miss although my crashes and freezes were less. To say that I was disappointed at this stage would be an understatement. I felt thoroughly cheated by Nokia who, it seemed to me, had rushed out the N97 with immature firmware just to compete with the iPhone 3GS.
I had experienced poor RAM before, with the N95, but this had been rectified to a large extent, by a firmware update. I thought about the millions of people worldwide who had purchased the N97 and had not, or could not, update the firmware and were cursing Nokia and the N97.
It would seem that Nokia had not learnt from Apple iPhone's original launch when they promised the earth and ended up refunding early adopters after pressure was brought to bear. I also despised Nokia's head in the sand approach to the lens scratching fiasco that, luckily, I have not suffered from.
By this time I was seriously considering getting rid of my N97 and moving on. It was becoming a full time job to ensure that there was enough RAM and C: drive. I was constantly having to make tradeoffs about installing certain app's and although my GPS had improved it wasn't great. I was also cheesed off using the scroll bar to go through lists and got frustrated with it on Contacts and Music, usually ending up using the Nav pad. The touch screen was still a joke with me having to constantly tap to try and get it to work.
    Enough was enough!
I'd spent over a quarter of a year trying to come to terms with what was supposed to be a Nokia flagship phone costing £500 that just did not deliver.
And then I saw a preview of v20 with its kinetic scrolling and RAM and C: usage enhancements and thought I'd give the N97 one last chance.
After all, I stood to lose about half the phones cost if I tried to sell it on.
Like most of you, I waited with baited breath for the will they, won't they, release of v20.
Then, finally, it became available for my, now, unbranded Euro firmware and I jumped on it immediately.
That's where I made my first mistake, as I downloaded v20 straight away using NSU and immediately started to get freezes, crashes and rebooting. Photo's were slow and the Music library was a nightmare.
The penny then dropped, as they say, and I realised from my experiences with the N95 and N95 8GB, that with a firmware upgrade of this magnitude it was bound to cause problems if I either just upgraded or reinstalled from PC Suite backup.
I then proceeded to format both the phone and Mass Memory and reinstall everthing from scratch. Not an easy or short task I might add.
    It was worth it though!
I had nearly 60MB free on C: drive, before installing themes, app's and widgets. My RAM was now 40+MB after boot up and rarely goes below 20MB.
Kinetic scrolling is a joy to use. The phone is no longer sluggish. The touch screen is very responsive. I ditched Nokia Photo Browser beta as the in-built photo's prog offered so much more. The music library is a lot better. Particularly with album art. Boot up time is quicker. Widgets are more stable, although Accuweather seem to have dropped "Current Location". My GPS achieves a more accurate, and quicker, lock than before. I experience a lot less lags. The built-in browser is a lot quicker, I can hold down a key in QWERTY to get a symbol. The speakers even sound better!
Also there was a lot of tinkering and tweaking of settings as this can make a big difference to the way the phone funtions, as we can see by the forum postings.
IMHO this was the N97 I thought I was getting in June. This is the N97 that Nokia should, and could, have released and I cannot excuse them for palming off inferior firmware.
OK, it's not perfect, but as Julia Roberts says in Pretty Woman... "it has potential".
Am I going to ditch it? The answer is no!
Because I think that v20 has gone a long way to solving a lot of the things that bugged me. It shows me what this phone is capable of. It can multi task. It can run prog's without crashing.
Some of us wax lyrical about the N95 but I remember all the complaints about the lack of RAM and it's slowness, poor camera and video. until it received it's v20 upgrade which changed the phone completely and actually put it ahead of the N95 8GB with its restricted Mass Memory.
Perhaps smart phones are becoming too smart.
We get them and fire them up, sometimes ignoring the manuals, and then shove loads of third party software on them without a thought or adjustment to settings and expect them to work perfectly. I know from my own experience that I've had to uninstall software from a handset because of conflicts or poor programming.
I know that there are delays with the release of firmware updates between the Continent, CV and operator branded handsets but this is not all down to Nokia but rather to getting country approvals and operator "adjustments".
I must stress that these are my opinions based on my usage, app's and phone model.
I understand I may come in for a lot of flak for this and I am certainly no technical genius. I'm just trying to relate my everyday experience and frustration with the N97.
As my dear old mum used to say... "Speak as you find" and I'm finding this phone a lot better than it was.
Message Edited by wildreamer on 15-Nov-2009 09:01 PM

I have had a very similar experience with the N97 and agree that now with firmware v20 the phone is just usable. It's ridiculous that to get to this point we've had to put so much work into researching solutions, resetting the phone multiple times, formatting the mass memory, reloading media and maps (also multiple times), uninstalling and reinstalling apps, and installing and reinstalling firmware updates. My wife jokingly said to me that I'd spent more time trying to get the phone running than actually using it. The sad thing is that this is pretty much true and no matter how well the phone works I will always remember the first four months of very sub par performance.
IMHO if Nokia hadn't skimped on the memory for the RAM and c drive the N97 would have suffered from a lot less problems. Also instead of spending four months trying to resolve these memory issues in the development for the v20 firmware release, they could have focussed on the multitude of other bugs. And how much do you think Nokia saved by skimping, maybe a few dollars per handset. Contrast this with how much bad publicity they have received over the N97 as well as the bad experience for people who spent US $700 for a flagship device.
Added to all these faults is the poor way that Nokia have handled this. From the head in the sand approach to the camera lens scratches and poor GPS, to the lack of Mac support, and to the complete denial that there is even a problem.
Nokia's official support is also problematic, the user to user forum is good but it should not be a replacement for official support pages (the device support pages only provide the product guide and link to the discussions forum) and getting anything other than form responses and incorrect information from the Nokia Customer Care makes this service a complete waste of time.
Will I sell my N97? No, not for the moment.
Can I recommend the N97? No!
Can I recommend any Nokia product? No!

  • Slew of N97 problems.

I'm sure some of these may have been addressed in the n97 bugs thread, but I do nto have time to read through 500 posts, and a post in that will simply be buried and forgotten in moments, hopefully I can find some hints in here.
the problems I am having with my n97 so far.
    1. Photos taken with the N97 camera do not appear in the gallery. (an occasional photo may work, but more often not) they do however appear in the nokia photo browser from beta labs, but that doesn't allow me to do thigns such as upload to facebook, one of the reasons I decided to get this phone.
    2. Widgets often stop working, and require a restart to get going again, however, on restart the pictures assigned to my favourite contacts will not appear, and the facebook app just says loading content forever, unless i remove the applications before I turn the phone off, let it start, than add the widgets to the homescreen after boot.
    3. Songs in my music collection that are all tagged and have album art, once transferred to the phone, only some will show album art, some show none. and a whole pile of random songs will appear in an unknown folder, instead of there relevent artist or album name. If I browse to these songs theough the file manager, and play, all the track details will appear, but not when search my library through the music player.
    4. Assigned ringtone will not work for a period time, simply playing the default nokia tune. even if I reset the tone, or change to something else, it will apear as if everything has worked, but then someone will call.. nokia tune again.
    5. SMS from a select few (but not everyone) will appear with a timestamp 2 hours prior to when i received it, say I get an sms at 9:17pm, it will say 7:17pm, and bury down the list in my inbox. however this problem seems to have rectified itself recently, but no settings where changed.
I am running the latest software V11.0.021
i love this phone I really do, waited for it for months and months, has so many great features, but just way way to many bugs. i am a very tech savy person but I know that if i was like 95% of phone users that expect an item to simply 'work', this phone would have gone back a long time ago now.
If anyone can offer any fixes, that would be great, if not i figure that at the very least ths may make the software bugs recognised by nokia, and hopefully they an develop a fix. and fast.

updating to new firmware depends on product code which represents your region of purchasing, language pack and if it's branded or not .... so NOKIA releases firmwares and release it for every product code depending on mentioned points if ur product code hasn't the v.21 update, that means that nokia didn't release it for your product code yet or your phone is branded with an operator and that means that you should go to the operator care center

  • N97 Bugs ant problems...

    Dear forum members...
I have been used N97 RM505 for couple of months.
I bought it brand new with 3 generations old fw.
My problems with the phone started then! Very disappointing and embarrassing for Nokia, to be honest.
Since I consider myself  "power user", I have never had smartphone  or  pocket PC so I could use it as phone or music player. I have always wanted to use phone as mobile computer so I aimed hi-tech products (7-8 years ago)  from manufacturers like HTC, HP...half year ago I fell in love with Nokia E71 smartphone, and that was my first Symbian powered gadget. I was very interested in how  "symbians" do it. And I was surprised how it worked. But, I wanted more. I gave E71 as present and decided to go for N97, flagship Nokia device.
And then, problems started to show up...
3 FW updates from that moment, and problems I have with this...device..do not disappear!
Same things happen all over again!
I read about particular issues and there are many of them, that's for sure.
My problem is simple: I have all of them!
Main camera works from time to time, after I answer the call I cant unlock the phone, freezes during boot sequence, left side of display in landscape mode dissapears, phone "kind of soft-restarts" every day or two and after that I have to reconfigure my email settings all over again, speed dial and favorite contacts lose pictures, contacts or group assigned ringtones mess up...
Phone has to be rebooted using "battery-pulled-out" method at least 3 times a day!
Tried everything: formatting, reinstalling device's FW, hard-resetting, FW upgrading...
Every time I format memory or hard-reset the phone i hope that will be last time!
But, nothing happens. Phone works well for a couple of hours. Phone call and it gets stuck, and i start all over again...when I come home.
I work as industrial automation software developer and, believe me, i know what "faulty device" means.
I know Nokia's origins, and I know that Finland is cradle of mobile communications, I have visited couple of companies in Finland that produce very reliable digital radio devices and I am familiar how professional they are up there...Every bug I have found in devices produced and developed in Finland was reported and problems were solved in couple of weeks or so! This does not fit in my experience with Nokia. E71 is outstanding device. I am sorry because I switched it for this "flagship phone" or, even worse, "mobile computer".
    Bottom line:
Phone is not reliable, especially if you want to use it as multipurpose device!
Calling this device  "Nokia flagship phone" is very wrong.
I am gonna wait for couple of weeks for new FW since it is not still available for rm505 officially, and after that I'll do something bad with this phone.
Technical support in my country is more than "unprofessional" and problem solving does not consist of turning off and turning on the phone or continuous reinstalling FW, as they do it.
My Question: Anything similar happened to anybody, and what I should do?
Thanks for advices. Forget technical support or local repair centre.
    Cheers!

    Yeah...
Thanks for the tips, carman58. I have already managed to try all different combinations and procedures for getting my phone to work including your recommendations.
As I told you before...after formatting E-drive, reinstalling phone software and hard resetting things went pretty well...until something happens. Week or two...day or two of heavy usage and I can't unlock device after phone call...Or main camera fails. Or, sometimes I just can't turn it on. White screen and stuff like that. 3-4 days before I decided to post on this forum I conducted procedure similar to the one recommended by carman58. I tried to conclude "critical amount of free space on C drive" that affects phone's stability. Phone works well (but I want it to work better than that) with 40-50 MB of free space on C drive. Anything below that level does not guarantee your phone will work well. Memory allocation may be the key...Not my job, just trying to conclude something logical.
I am not fan of third party software that watches RAM or CPU usage...Bad experience with Windows mobile devices, but I'll try to see somehow  if there's not enough memory when s**t happen.
And, yes...There are some apps that definitely do not free allocated memory after program is closed or even crashed. I am not going to name these apps, just want to know forum members experience with remote desktop management software compatible with N97. Hahaha!...In ths very moment I found out that my phone is not charging although it is connected to  the charger! Never mind...Maybe notification does not work.
Is there Nokia's official explanation for problems with N97? They can't deny problems. I mean, if you are not heavy user, or power-user....whatever....maybe you won't have problems we are dealing with?
And then, what's the point of 400MHz cpu clock, and great amount of RAM? It is there so we can watch video clips, take pictures, or surf the web? Yes but not all of that at the same time...
Multitasking is what devices like N97 should eat for lunch, if you know what I mean. Memory management should not be like this...3rd party apps for monitoring and flushing RAM. No way.
I know how hard it is to develop device that has all of these functions N97 has. So many hardware modules in such small housing, powered by such small power source...That's hell of a job!
If it is true, then my device should still have "beta" somewhere around "N97". I am not going to mention how much money N97 costs...
    Bugs antS problems...
