Name of Computer changed during Migration.

I used Migration Assistant to Merge my data, settings, and files from my Macbook to my iMac, but every where I see the name of my computer it says "Trey's MacBook" is there a way to change this?

  • Name of computer changing all the time

hi my girl friend iMAC name is always changing  i have to go all the time in properties and  also compare to mine it seems slower i have to restart computer to get back in iphotos or wathever we work with can you help me thank's

In my experience your router is not dropping the Mac while while the Mac is asleep. So when you wake the Mac and it tries to connect to your router it is told that a Mac with your Mac's name is already connected to the router, so your Mac changes its name to get a connection. Look into how your router is configured to hand out connections. Perhaps reset the router to its factory setting to give it a good kick in the can.

  • Password reset/change during migration [Problem an...

    Hi all,
I would like to share a password change problem I have encountered, and some remedial steps to resolve it during the migration from Yahoo Mail to BT Mail.
    Background:
I am a relatively new customer (less than a year) and I have a ABC@btinternet BT ID and email account name. I recently received an email informing me of the pre-requirites for the migration. I have attempted to change my password since then which resulted in being effectively locked out of my account. I tried all of the usual remedies ranging from clearing cookies and browsing data, to different browsers, deep virus and malware scans, to a completley new installation of the OS (Win 7) and even using a Linux distribution.
    Problem:
After logging in via the BT main portal email link, I attempted to change my password via the account settings page. This appeared to be successful, and a confirmation email was received via previously set up forwarded address, which would also indicate this assertion. However, after logging out, I was unable to log back in with neither the new password, nor the old. Any attempt to reset using the lost password wizard resulted in the same initial indication of success, but ultimate failure to log in. This is rather counter intuitive.
After several hours of live chat and telephone conversations with the help department, it was found that using the BT main page to initiate a password change for the email service was at fault.
    Solution:
There is an alternative using the Yahoo (www.mail.yahoo.com) sign in page to initiate a password change/reset, and will work as intended. Exactly the same user experience, ie wizard completes and confirmation email, but this time the change will come into effect when logging in from the BT main page.
    [Edit]
If you have found this after already being locked out of your account (which is very likely to be the case) simply go to the Yahoo sign in page and enter your old password. You will then be able to access your account settings to change to your new one. Similarly, a forgotten password will work from here too.
    Things to look out for:
Some of us are under what is dubbed a "mierge journey" and this appears to be at the root of the problem. If the URL for a "Forgotten Password" contains something like
    "... /managepassword/merged_consumer_journey/forgottenpass ..."
Then you are probably in the same situation and this advice should apply.
Thanks go to the help team for thier tireless efforts in uncovering this issue, and please reply with any ommisions or other suggestions/situations that will help others and I'll ammend/add to this post.
    TLDR:
Do not use the BT email sign in link when changing or restting your password.
Do use the alternative Yahoo sign in page to change or reset your password.

    Update:
Workaround: log in using a different client machine.
    Scary.

  • Computer crash during migration

I just got a MacBook Pro to upgrade from my old Aluminum PowerBook (honorably retired after 4 years of service). I didn't migrate the data from the PowerBook during the setup process for the MacBook Pro and opted to do it after setup. I connected both computers, restarted the PowerBook while holding the "T", the process started and since it said that it would take three hours I went to do some errands. When I got back, I noticed that the process had stopped halfway and there was a failure notice saying that the source computer had failed - the PowerBook was frozen... Since my important data is on an external hard drive I decided to reinstall my programs myself and manually transfer any other "leftovers" by plugging the PowerBook to the MacBook Pro as an external drive. Everything that I needed from my PowerBook is now on the new computer and working fine.
However, I'm curious to know if anything actually transfered to my MacBook Pro with Migration Assistant and if its now just occupying space in my MacBook Pro's hard drive. If this is the case, is there a way to delete it?
    Thanks!

    Hey talgrinvald,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iOS device is not recognized in iTunes. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Name of computer keeps changing to My ***** (2)

I have changed the name of my computer 8 times today in settings/sharing to remove the (2) after the computer name. The last time I changed it and before I could do anything the name changed! After putting the name back, the computer will again show up in the shared computer area of the finder
There are some apps that won't sync unless the computer name is correct.
What is causing the computer name to keep changing? It used to happen occasionally, this many  times times in one day is absurd! It just changed again while I was typing this question.

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models. You can avoid it as follows:
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. If the router is an Apple device, it may need to be restarted.
    7. A third-party Bonjour device on the network is malfunctioning. Finding out which is a process of elimination.
    8. There is more than one DHCP server on the network. Typically, there would be two or more wireless access points configured to act as routers.
    9. See this support article.
    10. Back up all data. Make notes of your settings in the Network preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. You will need to recreate the network settings.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • I recently got a message on my screen that says "the name of your computer is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to *

I recently got a message with an exclamation mark stating "your computer name is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to ______"
How did this happen, is it phishing, malware, or did someone hit some button on here to change it. I'm hoping that someone else doesn't have access to everything on my computer now. Help!

    Hello RaptorTrish,
Interesting name!   You don't say what computer you are using, the OS or the nature of the network, home, office etc.    Could you fill in a few details.
You are right to be concerned but there is often a simple explanation.

  • HT5167 Error after 10.7.4 upgrade..."computer's local hostname ........is already in use on this network.  The name has been changed to......  What to do now to get it back to status before 10.7.4 upgrade?

Error after 10.7.4 Lion Upgrade to iMac
Computer's local host name .......is already in use on this network.  the name has been changed to........
and it keeps adding up the number each time I wake the iMac.
What to do to get it back before upgrade error?

Ok worth repeating, hope this works.  Finally spoke to AppleCare Support and walked me thru following...restart computer holding down "command" and "option" keys at the same time with letters "P" and "R" when computer turns on.  This is what he called a PR restart, clears out discrepancies in memory (if that is what the error message actually is).  Then went to Systems Preferences/Network/Sharing and deleted the number that kept increasing every time MAC would wake up.
Even tho this was just done, I am hopeful that error pop-up won't happen again.  Fingers crossed!

  • What does this mean?  This computer's local hostname "Linda-Daviss-iMac-4.local" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "Linda-Daviss-iMac-5.local".

What does this mean: This computer’s local hostname “Linda-Daviss-iMac-4.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “Linda-Daviss-iMac-5.local”.
When I came back to my computer this message was on the screen.  Should I be concerned ? or doing something?

Sometimes this message means that you have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Sometimes it happens because a device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.

  • Should I ok "this computer's local hostname Irma-Mac-mini-local" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to Irma2 Mac-mini 2-local

Should I ok this message-this computer's local hostname Irma's Mac-mini-local is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to Irma's Mac-mini-2local

Don't think this is a conflict with IP Addresses or computer names
= DHCP hangover when computer renews DHCP lease
There is no actual other computer
It just appears that way when reconnects so creates new -2 computer name
What types of names do you use your computers ?
Whether you name them after quantum particles or the romantic poets...
They will each start to be appended with "-2" then "-3" etc if you auto configure network settings from Airport Router  DHCP service and you have this Change computer name issue where pop up window states name is already being used on your LAN
As stated previous post you can reset the computer name in SysPrefs / Sharing / Edit button
And restart Router or renew all DHCP leases (if persists in not allowing original name)
Can now press Edit and reset name of choice
But for Fix see link above

I get this message: This computer’s local hostname “x-8.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “x-9.local” I have turned off sharing and it continues to upgrade name. What is the fix?

Hi, this is a common problem, mostly just irksome though.
It can have many cause, like using more than one Interface for connections, Router temporarily losing x.local & seeing a new connection with x.local already used, insists it must be x-1.local, x-2.local, etc..
What all Sharing do you have enabled?
    Some possible fixes...

  • The name of your computer "Alpha (3376)" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "Alpha (6759)".  Why do I keep getting this message?

I keep getting this message every time I log in.  Why?   I have an iMac with sharing on for my networked printer and to share file between the iMac and my MacBook.  Can anyone help?

This is an annoying but not disastrous thing. Your computer sends messages on your home network and each message includes its name. If your computer is restarted or if it goes to sleep and wakes up all those messages should now gone but sometimes when the computer reconnects to the network it picks up a message with its name in it. Your computer doesn't realize its an old message from itself, it thinks the message is from a computer with the same name and that's not permitted so your computer's name is automatically changed.
Temporary solution (or not): turn everything off - your computers, printers, internet modem and router; any and all devices that are connected to your network. Then restart them. I hear about this issue all the time and this solution has been temporary for some people (days, weeks, or months) and for others it has seemingly solved it totally.

I  have a new Mac Pro computer and have migrated my files from my older computer to the new computer. In trying to open a Lightroom catalog on an external hard drive  I keep on getting the message "lightroom cannot use the catalog named " " because it is  not writable and cannot be opened. I have fixed all the "permissions" and yet it will still not open. How do I fix this?

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!

  • OOF not working for mailboxes homed on Exchange 2010 server during migration

    Hi There
I'm troubleshooting an issue during a exchange 2010 to exchange 2013 migration where the OOF is not working for users homed on the exchange 2010 mailbox servers. This applies to users using outlook 2010 and outlook 2013 .OWA works perfectly and you can also
    enable OOF via exchange powershell.
Users homed on the exchange 2013 servers does not have any issues.
The exchange 2010 servers is on SP3 rollup 4 and the 2013 servers on SP1 only without any rollups installed.
So my question will be - have anyone experienced this issue during migration and will patching the exchange 2010 servers to rollup 5 or 6 and the exchange 2013 to sp1 rollup 5 fix the OOF issue then? If requested the client to patch to these levels, but
in the meantime I'm checking if anyone else had similar issues.
    Any pointers will be welcome.

    Hi ,
1.Please check the problematic exchange 2010 user account can able to access the ews virtual directory internal url and you can check that via browser's.It will prompt for the user name and password , please provide that .
EWS url wopuld be like - https://mail.youdomain.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx
2.Then the second step would be autodiscover check for the problematic user account.you can find that via test email configuration .There you came to know whether outlook is fetching up the proper url for ews and autodiscover.
3.Then please un check the proxy settings in browsers and check the same.
4.please use the command to check the auto discover

  • The password for the account "account name" was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help.

I have a user who's Active Directory password is going to expire. I had her reset her password by going to apple > system prefs > user > and clicking change password. She received the error "The password for the account "account name" was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help."
I had her change her password via the kpasswd command in terminal and that changed her password on the server sucessfully however the laptop has FileVault on it. Filevault is not recognizing the new password just the old password.
I have deleted the keychain which didn't resolve and now I am going to decrypt and reencrypt the drive. I'm hoping this is an isolated issue I have over 25 laptops configured like this.

I "think" the trick was unbinding and rebinding the computer account.
After unencrypting and trying to reencrypt Filevault would still not take the new password.
Rebooted the prompt to update the keychain appeared. Updated the keychain. Filevault would still not take the new password.
Unbinded and rebinded the computer account. It worked and let me add the user to filevault.
