Nano 6th generation will not turn on but works when plugged in to itunes?
My son got a nano 6th generation for christmas 2010 and brought it to me the other day because the screen would not turn on. I plugged it into itunes and it was there, all songs were still on it. I tried to trouble shoot the device after unplugging it by holding down the negative volume button and the sleep button for 10 seconds. I repeated the steps but nothing happened. I plugged it back into itunes and restored the device to original settings. Still no display. Will Apple exchange the device if it has not been 12 months since date of purchase? Please advise. I am at a loss.!
Since your iPod is still under the 1 year warranty against manufacturer defects, I would take it in to your local Apple Store/Genius bar and see if they'll replace it, which they should as long as they determine the cause its not from accidental damage or use.

My ipod nano 6th generation will not turn on.
My iPod nano (6th generation) will not turn on. I have charged it (attached to my computer) for 30 minutes. I have tried to reset it (held down Wake and Volume Down for 8 seconds)- no response. I have factory restored it (through iTunes)- no response. It shows up as connected to my computer and will sync in iTunes, but the display on the iPod will not turn on. Any ideas?
Hey s.mccarter2010,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you have tried a lot of things and the iPod still will not turn on. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
iPod won't turn on
If you have tried the solutions above and iPod still won't turn on, check the following:
Make sure iPod is the only device in your FireWire or USB chain. Disconnect everything but the mouse, keyboard, and your iPod, then see if it will turn on.
Make sure you are using the FireWire or USB cable that came with your iPod, and that the cable is in good condition.
Try connecting iPod to the built-in port of a different computer to see if that works. Note: If using a portable computer, make sure it is plugged in to a power source and that the lid or display is open. If the lid is closed the computer may go into either standby, sleep, or hibernation mode and iPod will not charge properly.
If you still can't turn iPod on after performing these steps, it may need to be repaired. You can arrange for repair at the iPod Service Website.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Have a nice day,

Hi meganisawsome,
If your iPod will not turn on and you are getting indicators that there is no battery left, the first step would be to make sure that the iPod has been charged correctly. You may find the following article useful:

Ipod Nano will not power on, but works when plugged in. Any fix?
Hello, My wife's Ipod Nano I got her for her birthday a while back will not turn on. She thought the battery was dead and hasn't used it in some time. Now when she or I plug it in it comes on, you can see her music and connect to our Itunes but it will not turn on from battery.
It is NOT the hold/lock button on top I have tried everything.
I tried holding down the menu button and select button, still nothing. What can I do?If the iPod functions normally while plugged into an external power source of some sort (either USB port on your PC or Mac OR while plugged into a wall adapter), but doesn't when running on battery power, it's likely that the iPod's battery is shot.
You can have Apple or a third party repair center replace the battery for a flat fee. Otherwise, it's time to start saving for a new iPod or replacement.

Ipod Nano 6th Generation will not turn on.
My brother bought my mother the new Ipod Nano 6th Gen as a gift yesterday. We plugged in to charge (like the instruction booklet says) and found the Ipod wasn't turning on. Everything on the computer and syncing side works. We managed to register the Ipod and everything like that but when it comes to controlling the actual Ipod, it doesn't seem to be working.
I have tried resetting (Volume Down Button + Sleep/Awake Button) it but still nothing.
The repairing Ipod has been cast on me which is unfortunate because my mother doesn't take things breaking very well and I would rather sort it out for myself than have to hike up to my nearest Apple Store for the Genius Bar to look at it.
I would like to know if this is a problem with the screen or with the actual power in the ipod.
The tiniest of help and I would be very greatful. thanks,
Ross Jordan.
ps. it has been charging for a good 3/4 hours now.If you do a restore on it from itunes on your computer and it still does not work....then it's a defective unit and you'll have to take it in for an exchange.
Try to restore first before taking it in.
Here is how you do it:

Good luck!

I also tried holding the sleep/power button along with the minus button to reset it and that did not work either. Any help would be great, thanks.
If you update the iPod software to the latest version (1.1) you should be able to power off the iPod. If that doesn't work especially since you restored it's most likely a hardware issue with the iPod. If so, contact AppleCare or visit an Apple Retail Store so they can setup a repair for you.

My phone turned off over night and will not turn back on even when plugged in. Is there anything that I can do?
If you've left the phone plugged in for at least a half-hour with no results, then try holding power and home buttons simultaneously to do a soft reset (settings) only. If that doesn't work, try seeing if iTunes will recognize the device and let the computer charge the device.

My iPod won't reset, I've toggled the lock button and held down both the center and play and the center and menu buttons. Also, my computer and dock do not recognize it when I plug it in. I tried plugging it in to a new port on the macbook, but nothing changed. Since it does not turn on by itself, when plugged into a computer, or when on a dock, I'm assuming it's interior problems. I have not dropped it or gotten it wet at all. What should I do? Thanks!
How long have you left the iPod to charge? It can take up to 30 minutes for the iPod to power on or show any signs of life. How long did you press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons to reset the iPod?
It might not to also make use of another USB sync cable if you have one laying around to rule out the possibility of a faulty/damaged cable.
