Nano installation problem - PC only sees as USB drive & can't access it...

New Nano 4gb. Our 4th iPod (2 minis, 1 30g in past)
Cannot install it - just sits there saying "do not disconnect" for an hour & more.
Have reinstalled, rebooted, reset etc etc.
Device Manager sees iPod (as an iPod)on USB port.
When first plugged in Windows picked it up as an iPod but subsequently views it only as a drive.
Windows Explorer thinks it is a drive but can't access it.
Tried turning off anti virus (McAfee), SpySweeper & even Windows Firewall.
Tried changing drive letter via Adminstrative Toolls & "Computer Management" function in Control Panel: could see the drive & the available 3.73gb of capacity but as a drive not as an iPod.
iTunesHelper is running when I run MSCONFIG.
Any ideas or is it just a dud...??
Is there a limit to the number of iPods I can run on 1 PC?
(If so, it would be nice if it said so...! How do I delete one to let this one in?)

I'm having the exact same problem, and after the exact same attempted fixes. In addition, I went out and bought a fire wire connector because someone here suggested that would solve the problem. Silly me, after I got home I realized I don't have a firewire connection on my laptop, DUH!! Have you tried connecting the nano via firewire?
I really would like some help with this before I throw the thing out the window!

Force close the App Store app and reset the iPad. No data will be lost when you reset the device.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Unknown device - ipod nano fine - problem with windows xp and usb root hub

Greetings all. I've seen this question come up over and over again and have been working on it following previous posts and posts on microsoft and hp sites for a couple of days now.
First off - the ipod nano is fine. Works on my son's computer well.
When I plug it into my 6 months new HP Pavilion laptop it says: 'found new hardware' and goes through the process of installing it, says it's been installed, but then shows 'unknown device'. In Device Manager it tells me there are no drivers installed, but when I try to follow the other instructions on this forum to update the drive to USB mass storage device (usbstor.inf), it tells me the best driver is installed and won't do it.
Many seem to have this problem with devices other than the iPod on Windows service pack 2 so I went to the Microsoft forums and they seem just as puzzled. I've updated all my Windows & HP software to the latest possible versions. The problem is definitely in the USB. Once, when I uninstalled the USB device and then rebooted the computer with my iPod still plugged into the port, it found my iPod, correctly identified it, and for a blissful moment I thought everything was fine! Then it reinstalled the USB drivers and made a comment to the effect that I should move the iPod to a USB 2.0 port for more effective operation and the iPod disappeared again.
I have 3 USB ports on my laptop, all are USB 2.0 and all 3 have the same problem.
I've tried all the stuff people have already said on here...does anyone have any NEW ideas? I'm hesitant to take it in for service because it seems to be a software problem that should be fixable.
Thanks in advance for your help and sorry about the long post.

This isn't a solution, but it's something I just tried and it may provide someone additional clues about's going on. I too think this is some sort of USB problem.
I have 6 USB ports. Two of them are USB 2.0. Since I applied the 03-23 update my computer hasn't recognized my nano at all. I would connect my nano and I couldn't get it to show up in My Computer, in iTunes, or on the far right side of the Start taskbar.
I just tried plugging my nano into the first USB port of my USB 2.0 pair and left the second 2.0 port empty. I then rebooted with the nano attached. Viola - I get a "Found New Hardware Apple iPod USB Device" message. My nano is now flashing "Do Not Disconnect." A small removeable storage icon with green arrow now shows on the far right side of the Start taskbar. If I click on it (like you're going to eject it) the note displayed says "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - Drive (F:)".
If I go into My Computer, "Removeable Disk (F:)" now shows there. However, if I try to follow Trevor's instructions in another post to "go into My Computer with iPod connected, right click it, wait till the right click menu comes up (could take a few minutes); click Format, . . ." I'm stuck. I do the right click, watch the hour glass and wait for the Format menu to come up but it never does. Eventually the hour glass just goes away. No message, no Format menu. The waiting hour glass just goes away.
My computer isn't as new as yours, but like you I am completely current on maintenance.
I'm going to keep trying . . . If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

  • Will only support one USB drive at a time

    Background
This is happening with a Mid 2007 Mini, OS X 10.7.4.
I use this Mini soley as an iTunes music server. The OS is on the internal drive. Music is on a separate drive, as is Time Machine. No keyboard is connected. I do all maintence wirelessly via screen sharing from another Mac.
Recently I changed the drives from conventional ext. FW hard drives to ext USB SSD. The USB enclosures are USB2/3 "Hornet" brand. The SSDs are Samsung 256GB 830s.
    The Problem
Only one USB drive will stay mounted at a time. Both drives will initially mount but once one is put into use, i.e., play a song or start a Time Machine update, the other drive will unmount and I get the nasty "You disconnected your USB drive improperly...." I've seen the threads on USB drives randomly unmounting. This is not that issue. My drives do not randomly unmount; one will unmount as soon as the other is in use. (The unmounted drive stays unmounted. It does not remount when the other drive is no longer in use).
The drives came with USB cables that had dual ends, one for data/power the other power only. The problem occurs regardless of whether I use just the data/power or both.
    My initial thoughts are:
    1) It's a power issue and the Mini can't support the power requirements of both drives simulateously. I need an A/C adapter.
    2) It's an incompatible enclosure (even though it said Mac compatible, who knows if it was actually tested and not just presumed).
    3) Crappy cables.
    The Question
Since testing any of these hypothesis will cost me $ (and time to buy -- and return if unsuccesful) I'm hoping someone here has experienced something similar to guide me to the fix a bit quicker. Am I close here, or could it be something else?

I believe Bus powered drives are for the birds, & more often a problem on Macs than PCs, get a good AC powered USB hub... or two.

  • Problems installing CS4 by flash/USB drive

I purchased the DVD-Roms late last year to install CS4. The programs successfully installed on my laptop, which recently died and is in the shop. But I never was able to install them on the desktop and would like to do so. When I put the DVDs into my DVD reader (which doesn't normally have problems reading things), it grinds away but cannot read the disks. My attempted solution was to copy the programs on a USB drive. In disc 1 I selected "autoplay" and most of the programs are installed but still not useable until I can get the second disc to also install.
Now I have a message, "Please insert Adobe CS4 Design Premium into drive E:\ to continue installation.
    - If I put the application disc 2 in the drive, it revs but does not actually read the disc.
    - On the USB folder sitting on my desktop for Application 2, my options are:
         -- extensions
         -- payloads
-- autorun (Which sounds good. But I click on it and it just opens a text editor that says [autorun] icon=cs4_designprem_disc.ico)
         -- cs4_designprem_disc (Opens to show an icon/graphic)
This is not a space issue because last time, I downloaded the "trial version" of CS4 from the website when it was available and then would manually enter my serial number. I wiped the hard drive. Now customer support says there are no links available online to CS4 since CS5 is soon available.
Any suggestions on how to get application disc 2 installed too, from the USB drive if possible?

Download on the iMac OS X Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0 and create a USB recovery disk.
Use that USB disk to boot your MBP retina.
Use the Terminal, that you find inside the recovery environment, to perform these commands
Verifiy that the main internal disk is labelled /dev/disk0
    diskutil list
this command will completely erase the internal disk. Please change /dev/disk0 if your is different, (it should not).
diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" GPT /dev/disk0
Verify that you just have 3 partition, no more Recovery HD partition
    diskutil list
    /dev/disk0

       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            499.2 GB   disk0s2
Quit Terminal and proceed with Reinstall Mac OS X
It'll take a lot of time, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

  • MAJOR problem with firmware 7.1.2 USB drive can't reconnect

I have only seen this brought up a couple of times but want to make sure we bring this to Apple's attention and they don't ignore this problem and get it fixed immediately.
Problem: If for some reason your computer looses a connection with your airport extreme (maybe due to some type of interference, loose internet connection and airport cycles itself..) without either you shutting down your computer or dismounting the drive you will be unable to reconnect to the drive again. A variety of errors will occur when trying to reconnect with the main one being "password, username etc. are invalid"
There are 2 solutions that I am aware of to fix this problem once it occurs, one is temporary (works until the airport drops your wireless connection again) and the other one is the current permanent fix.
1- Temporary Fix- unplug the usb drive from the airport extreme and plug it into your Macbook/computer. This will cause the drive to mounted correctly. "Eject" the drive and dismount it. Than re-plug the drive back into the airport extreme. Wait a few seconds and than re-start your computer. The drive will again work and should show up. automatically
2-Permanent fix-Downgrade your firmware/version to 7.1.1. Do this from the manual setup screen in the airport utility. Click on the word "Version," This will cause a pop-up box to show. In the "download version" choose version 7.1.1 and wait for it to install. Once the install is complete and you are back to version 7.1.1, re-start your computer/macbook and the drive should appear automatically.
The bad part about all of this is that I spent 2 days - 3 hours on the phone with a so called applecare "specialist" and they could not figure this out. One person told me there was no way to downgrade a firmware version. All 3 people could not think "out of the box" and just wanted to help me with a random dropped internet connection. I really could care less about the random drop internet connection, the problem is that the new firmware version causes you to loose complete access to your drive. So good job to those of you the are smarter than most of the apple support team and figured this out on your own.
List if you too are having this problem and already downgraded to version 7.1.1.

I didn't really think about it until I actually needed access to the drive tonight and then spent several hours pulling my hair out, setting up my base station with new passwords and user access etc over and over and over again. Thanks for the solution, you can't know what a relief it was to find it wasn't something I messed up myself.
So yes reverting to 7.1.1 gave me back my USB drives.
    Thanks,
    J.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials will only recognize 1 USB drive at a time in primordial pool

I have a new install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. I added 2 identical 2TB Seagate Expansion USB drives. Initially they had a volume on them, so I deleted the volume in order for them to be added to the primordial pool and storage spaces,
etc. They both show up fine in Disk Management, but only 1 of them at a time will show up in the primordial pool. I have tested moving them to different USB ports, trying only 1 disk at a time to ensure that both are good, rebooted, attached them via
a USB hub... but nothing works. In my most recent test I plugged in only one and did a rescan. I see it as Disk 1 in both Disk Management and Primordial pool. Then I added the second drive and did a rescan, it showed up as Disk 2 in Disk Management
and when I did a refresh in storage spaces, I can see that it changed to only see disk 2 in the primordial pool. What can be causing this?

To use USB disks, each disk must be plugged into a differs USB controller. A hub will obviously be on one controller, so that won't work. But many computers have only one or two controllers on the motherboard and then use port multipliers (basically internal
hubs) to support more ports. So you have to know your motherboard and which ports are on which controllers. And again, only one drive per controller.

  • [Solved] Read-Only mounting of USB drives

    Hello all,
This issue has been raised in many threads, but still I am unable to sort it out!
My USB drives (pen drive/ Hard Disk) are always mounted in read-only mode. These are in VFAT filesystem, so I dont think ntfs-3g is needed. But I installed that anyways.
I also tried with disabling auto mounting in dconf-editor and keeping a rule file under /etc/udev/rules.d/ as mentioned in the wiki.
    Still no luck.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks!

Here /dev/sdc1 is the USB drive. As you can see, its mounted as 'ro' (read only).

  • Installation of windows 7 software onto USB drive

I am following the procedures for setting up a windows partition on my Macbook retina Pro.
I cannot get the Bootcamp assistant to setup a USB installation disc.  It will not copy the software onto the USB drive.  I get the error "error installing windows7 software'  Can I just copy the windows iso file just onto a USB drive initialised as a Fat32 drive?
Any solutions would be most welcome in getting past this

i suspect you haven't prepared the USB drive as a boot volume.
You can absolutely do this. It is detailed on CNET in the following article: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31012_7-20020513-10355804.html

  • Problems with a shared external USB drive

I have setup an external USB drive on my iMac 10.6 and use it for Time Machine backup. When I try to access this drive over my wireless network from my PowerBook 10.5.8 for TM backup, I can only see the drive under Shared as a Folder, not a drive icon. It is not available for the PB's TM app. This is a HP 1 TB drive formatted in 1 partition MacOS Extended journaled GUID .... and it works as a backup drive for the desktop 10.6 TM.
The very same thing happens if I connect this USB drive to my Airport Extreme only both the PB and the iMac see the drive as a folder and neither can use the drive for a TM backup.
So, how can I see the drive as a drive icon from the PB and have it available for TM backup over the network?

    Douglas McKibbin wrote:

Do not attempt to back up that way -- it's "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+*
It sounds like you've missed a step in the setup. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Be sure to note the advice there to partition the drive, so each Mac has it's own, exclusive space.

  • Problem in seeing new LaCie USB drive

Hi all, am looking for information related to the fact that my LaCie 320 gig USB drive will not show on the desktop. Sometimes it does appear to quickly vanish, often with an error message relating to inappropriate device removal, but of course I have not removed anything.
All started after 10.4.8, have reinstalled 10.4.8 as a combo update and repaired permissions over and over, restarted, removed power cable from back of Mac, disconnected all USB and Firewire ports, etc, etc. Nothing will make the Lacic stay mounted!! Am running Vista under BootCamp, but can't see why that would effect anything.

  • HT2421 If I attach a hard drive to the USB port, can I access it from the wired network, while simultaneously creating a separate wifi network with NO access to the hard drive?

I already have a wireless network (call it Network A) with connectivity to various wired and wireless devices.  I have a USB hard drive that I directly attach to my MacBook Air.  I use it for Time Machine backups and general storage.  I would like to move this drive to an AirPort Extreme.  I would like to continue to be able to reach it via Network A, but also use the AirPort to create a guest Network (Network B).  I don't want the guest network to access the hard drive.
Now, I know I can plug a hub into the USB port and put (I hear up to 3) hard drives on it.  Can I determine which ones are accessable by Network A, and by Network B?
    Bonzo...

    Several things to consider.
You cannot create a wireless network for guests if the AE is bridged. It has to be the main router in the network.
You cannot use the existing TM backups on the USB drive.. if you plug into a network it will need to be wiped.. and only AC model can produce reliable TM backups.. the earlier models are not reliable for TM backups.
    See http://pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
These two factors alone may be enough to make you reconsider.
If you can create a guest network.. and you can overcome the limitations of airdisks.. then any person on the guest network should not be able to access the disk drive.. but if you wish to go ahead Bob Timmons might be able to confirm it.. I stay away from USB drives on routers.. I do not and will not use a router as a NAS.. it is underpowered and simply unsuitable long term.. a cheap single disk NAS is many times faster.. more reliable.. and has a marvellous thing called backup.. no USB disk or even internal disk in a TC can back itself up. .nor can TM backup network drives.. so any data you store on a USB drive is going to be gone one day.. unless you go to great lengths to back it up .. to where.. another USB drive plugged into another router somewhere.. the definition of slow.. should be copying files between two usb drives in an apple network using wireless. You will experience new levels of pain and suffering.. likened to the belly of the Sarlacc.
