Navigating a Pages document

In Pages, is it possible to get a navigation outline to appear in the left sidebar - such as the document’s Table of Contents with all its chapter headings and subheadings (all as clickable links)?
I sometimes work on large documents with many pages and this facility would make navigating my way around the document a cinch as I would be able to locate another part of the document with ease .
This is a very helpful feature of programmes such as MS Word, LibreOffice and OpenOffice. I know one can view page thumbnails in the sidebar, but in very large documents this does not make for easy navigation. Section headings would be very much better.
I use Pages 4.3 as Pages 5 is useless to me, with so many of the features I depend on removed. I am using OS X 10.9.3
Here’s hoping!

Hi Peter. Thank you for the reply.
I do have a Table of Contents - in fact, that's what I am using to navigate the document (it is 700+ pages long) at the moment. The TOC is on the first page, so I go up there, find the heading of the section I want, and as all the page numbers are links, I click on the page number and it takes me there. But this is cumbersome. It would be so much easier and 100 times more efficient just to have the sidebar showing all my section headings (based on the the paragraph styles (Heading 1, 2, 3...)), as MS Word has.
I can't use Outline View because of the problem of the cursor disappearing in the last few lines of each page - a problem with any document over about 120 pages long that I have seen reported by others elsewhere in these support communities discussions. You can't position the cursor anywhere in the bottom few lines. You have to select a line above until the cursor appears and then move it downwards with the arrow keys.
Bookmarks are not the ideal solution either - it's easier and quicker just to use the TOC as I'm doing at the moment.
I have made my suggestion to Apple on Pages feedback, but would they make this enhancement for an older version of Pages? As I said, Pages 5 is useless to me.
By the way, another problem with Pages is you can't split the window and see two different parts of the document at once (or am I missing something?)

  • Advice on importing a 250 page document into indesign 5.5

    Hi,
My job needs me to put together a fairly large well-designed 250 page book. I currently have the document in a 2007 Miccrosoft Word file. I was trying to read on the Adobe website, as well as on the forums, but I am hoping to get some additional clarification. I was wondering, can Indesign 5.5 inport such a large word document and is it a difficult process? Also, would it be good idea to even try and import a document of that size, or is InDesign not really made for doing something like this? Thanks.
    Louis

This is a major project and will require a fair amount of "advanced" technique (like using Styles properly), whether you make one file or a series of combined chapter files in a Book (In ID, a Book refers to a container file that holds information about other documents and is used to coordinate them and ooutput to a single finsehed document. It has nothign to do with waht the content actually is). The advantages I can think of to using a book over a single file are ease of navigation (fewer pages to scroll through in any document), some convenience if more than one person is working on the project as multiple docs can be editied by differnt people simultaneously, and a (very) small bit of additional safety from loss. With a single file, if it's damaged the whole thing is damaged, with a book, you lose only one document and the rest are still good. For a project this size, especailly if it has any cross-references (which are very flakey across documents) I think the advantages are minimal compared to some of the potential porblems John has raised.
But the main reason I'm posting is that I get the sense you are a new user, and I STRONGLY suggest you take some time to get a little training before you dive into something this big and dig a hole that you'll have trouble climbing out of. Lynda.com has some great video training, and a lot of new users find Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide to be an excellent book (it's the most recommended book on this forum).

  • Navigation for Page Thumbnails no longer on sidebar, now a pop-up?

I've noticed in the last day or two that my Pages feature on the left hand navigation bar is no longer there.  When I go to View>Navigation Panels>Pages it will come up but in a pop-up window.  Why is this?
I rely on this feature to move pages back and forth between documents on two different monitors and the pop-ups for each document won't both appear at once.  For example, when I click a thumbnail in a document on my left monitor the pop up that was in a document on my right monitor will disappear...therefore I have no where to drag the page to.
Is there any way that I can get the Pages navigation tool bar to show back up on the left hand side toolbar (with bookmarks, attachments, signatures, etc.)?
Btw, I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3.  I also have an Evermap Plug-in for bookmarks on my Adobe but I've had that for over 6 months and haven't had this issue until the last 2 days or so.
    Thanks,
    Jaime

Sometimes when an answer is that easy it can make you feel extremely dumb!  That worked just as you both said.  I'm not sure if I feel worse that it was that easy or that I spent two hours searching online and in the forums for the answer??
    I really appreciate the quick--and correct--response gentlemen!

  • In Initial View, can you set defaults for Navigation tab, Page layout, and Magnification?

    Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro V9.4.0

Problem: In Initial View, can you set defaults for Navigation tab, Page layout, and Magnification?
Every time Acrobat scans a document, I have to go to Initial View to set Navigation tab, Page layout, and Magnification. It does not remember the settings I last used.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Emailing Pages Document

I have Pages v 5.2 and am trying to send a document through Yahoo mail, but I can't attach an actual Pages doc (only PDF versions). The recipient computer has Pages, so I would like to send it as a Pages doc. Any suggestions?

In Pages ’09, the default .pages document was a compressed zip that was renamed .pages by the application. There was an option in Pages preferences to output the file as a Package, that when not under the care of the Finder, it was a folder. Pages v5+ now exclusively uses the Package solution. This causes problems for applications and services expecting a file or compressed file object, not folder, paradigm.
Pages v5+ and Apple Mail are designed to work together, and the Pages v5+ folder gets zipped in this relationship. If you are using a third-party Mail user agent, then you will need to take the intermediate Finder step to right-click on the Pages v5+ document, and select compress from the contextual menu. The document is now a compressed folder, appears as a single document, and is now navigable across non-Apple software and services. The Mac recipient simply needs to double-click the compressed package, and the Finder now presents a accessible .pages document.

  • MB2320 - Scanning multi-page documents and saving as a single, page-consecutive PDF

I just purchased and set up a Maxify MB2320 to replace my PIXMA MX892, which fell victim to the dreaded "Incorrect Printer Head - U062 Error." My only disappointment thus far is the replacement of "MP Navigator" with "Canon Quick Toolbox" and the unavailability of ADF-AutoDuplex scans. My problem: I've searched the instructions, tried the "Document," "Custom," and "ScanGear" utilities and cannot figure out how to scan multiple-page documents, have the scanned images appear in a single place where they can be put into sequential order, and save the whole mess into a single PDF file that can filed and saved in a folder designated by me. I'd very much appreciate a step-by-step tutorial on how to do that. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your prompt response and suggested solution. It worked! (One of the reasons I got lost is that the CSR I spoke to when I called initially sent me straight to the "ScanGear" tab in the "IJ Scan Utility," rather than "DocumentScan" (not "ScanDocument.") Couple other observations. When I installed the utilities onto my laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium SP-1, the shortcuts were installed to the Hidden Icons Folder in the System Tray, not the Desktop; I can pin the utility to the taskbar or add it to the Start Menu, but I can't create a shortcut for the Desktop by right-clicking. Also, after scanning two double-sided pages manually for the saved PDF, I was able to rearrange the pages into proper order mostly because the pages were graphically distinct enough to tell them apart in the thumbnails. This would be impossible for pages that are all-text, since the thumbnail images are so small. Is there a way to make the utility windows any larger, or otherwise make the thumbnail images readable? Thanks again.

  • I converted a 6 page document to a PDF file but I want to only send page 1.  How can I do that?

I downloaded a document from a website into a PDF file.  It was a 6 page document, but I want to only send page 1 of the document.  I don't know how or if it can be done.

    Larry,
There is more ways than one to do that. I've been extracting a lot of pages lately so that is why I gave you that method. Also, you need to have Acrobat pro to extract pages this way.
But here is another method which should do the same thing hopefully.
Follow the same instructions as the last post I gave you. Get the navigation index up that shows all the 6 pages. Right click on the page that you want to extract. Then click Print. You will then get a Print Box with options. At the top there should be a box that says printer. Use the down arrow on the right side of that box to scroll down to the option that says PDF. Then click the print button that will probably be at the bottom right. This will not print the page. It will extract the document and put it on the screen. Then do file save as and name the document something and put in in a place you will find it and then send it by email.

  • Navigation Panel Pages button not displaying thumbnail pages

Version of Acrobat = Standard 8.0.0
    OS = Win XP SP2
    Networked Dell Optiplex 620
    61.6GB Free disk space
    No error messages
The Navigation Panel Pages button will not display pages in thumbnail format.
When clicked the highlight around the button icon changes from a square with rounded corners, to just rounded corners on the left of the highlight. The right hand side of the highlight is cut off straight as if by the thumbnail panel that isnt visible.
This behaviour is also repeated on the Bookmarks and Signatures buttons in the navigation Panel as well.
Fiddling around with all the navigation panel settings or the document settings I can find has not made the thumbnail pages reappear.
I havent been able to access the Updates section of the Adobe website today to apply any relevant updates.
    Cheers.

Just in case, I would go through the updates to get AA8.1.2 and check if that was a bug in 8.0.0.

  • How do I use the Japanese fonts in Font Book in a Pages document?

How does one use the Japanese fonts in Font Book in a Pages document. Pages has its own fonts but I cannot get the Japanese fonts into it.

To type japanese on a computer you change the keyboard, not the font.  Go to system prefs/keyboard/input sources and add Japanese/Kotoeri to the list, then select Hiragana in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen, then type.  The font will take care of itself.

Pages 2.0.2 doesn't open Pages documents from ipad 2. Document succesfully transferred as Pages document to computer, but Pages 2.0,2 wouldn;t open it. Version too old?

Pages 2 is iWork '06, two versions behind what the iOS Pages creates. You need to use Pages '09 which you can purchase from the Mac App Store as a stand-alone application or a retail box of the iWork '09 suite.

  • Open Pages documents from an older version

I need to open Pages documents from an older version of Pages that I saved to an external drive from a computer that I no longer have access to.  My current operating system is 10.7.5 and I can't upgrade it right now.  I see that Pages 5.0 requires 10.10 or higher and I can't find older versions to download and from what I've read, it doesn't sound like I'd be able to open the old documents with the new version anyway.  I really need these documents. What can I do?

I found it helpful to convert all my old Pages '08 files to .doc files.  They can be opened by the new version of Pages.
Since the new version of Pages is no longer back compatible, and so not good for anything you want to keep for a long time, you might consider using an open source word processing application like Libra Office.  That's what I had to do.  After seven years of being a happy Pages user - archiving thousands of files in Pages -Apple has abandoned us.  I no longer think it is wise to use the new Pages and then five years down the road (or sooner) not to be able to open them in a newer version.
If you would like a quick way to convert your Pages '08 files to .doc, let me know.

I need to be able to send it to a PC in order to print it.

Hard to say what is happening without examining the file.
If you like click on my blue name and email me both the .pages file and the the .pdf you have made from it.

ps It would help to say what version of Pages you are using and on what you are running it. iOS or Mac and what version.

  • Italics is not working in part of my Pages document.

Italics is not working in one part of my Pages document.
It's working fine in other parts of the document, where font etc. is the exact same.
I've tried to copy the entire text to a new document, without the track changes turned on, but the area remains locked for the italics option.
    Can anyone help me please?

Menu > View > Show Styles Drawer
Pages samples existing styled text to create the styles and you apply them by selecting text and clicking on the style in the Style Drawer. It will not override prexisting exceptions to the style in selected text but you can force the Style definition onto the text by double clicking on the style name.

  • In Pages 5 when I try to attach a pages document to an email it gives me 2 folders and 4 files ???  How does one email a pages document.

How does one email a pages document? In pages 5 when I try to attach a pages document to a gmail email it gives me 2 folders and 4 other files to choose from.

Sounds like you are using Gmail.
Pages 5 uses a zipped package of files as its format. 3rd party servers don't understand the format and show it as the component parts.
Use Mail toenail the file or zip the .pages document before sending.

If you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, Save As… has returned to the File menu when you hold down the Option/alt key. But you don't really "save" as other file types, you translate & export as Word or RTF or text or PDF & that is easily done by going to File > Export or Share > Export.
Also, please do us all a favor & don't use all capitals in your posts, either the body of the post or the title. All caps is the internet equivalent of shouting & is very hard to read.
