NB305-N410BN-G wont boot up from anything!

I let my nephew borrow my computer for 2 days when I got it back he said it wouldn't start that the battery must have died. I plugged in turned it on ..Nothing and I mean nothing! The battery and power lights come on and the fan does for a few seconds, no screen no harddrive no network no USB power, I thought it might be the display plugged into an external monitor..Nothing. I did a hard reset by draining the power then restarted ..Nothing! I have a back up and plugged in my external harddrive to see if I could somehow get it to read it and nope... Nothing. I even tried holding down the zero key during startup for 2 min., nothing! Any idea what he may have done to it or a way for me to start it up please I'm all ears.

Sounds like the hardware has been damaged to me, Peter. Since you have ruled this out, apparently, I support your resolution of his problem for the time being.
Good luck!

Good luck!

  • IBook wont boot up from Firewire Drive - it used to

I've been struggling with my G3 iBook for the last few weeks. It's a long story...
My initial problem started when the beachball started spinning and spinning for the smallest little thing. I would have a single program running but it would still keep spinning. I repaired disk permissions and ran MacJanitor. MacJanitor would take more than 40 minutes to complete running. It usually used to take less than 5 minutes.
I called the local Apple dealer (no Apple Stores here) and they suggested that I reinstall the OS. I reinstalled the OS, but that didn't result in any improvement. A few days later I got a warning from the HDD S.M.A.R.T. status saying that the internal HDD was failing.
I didn't have a backup of my internal HDD so I went out and got myself an external 3.5" Firewire HDD. I then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the internal drive to the HDD. Cloning itself took about 8 hours - I assume because of the problem with the internal HDD. I then went to the system preferences to make the external HDD as the startup disk. I then erased the internal HDD. My iBook was booting up and running at normal speed using the external Firewire HDD.
Last night I noticed the beachball spinning again. It was late so I shut down the iBook. When I tried to startup the iBook this morning , the Apple symbol came up on the screen, and a few minutes later a Circle with a slash symbol across it. The iBook would not boot up. I tried this a couple of times with no success.
I reinstalled the OS on the internal HDD - took about 3.5 hours. I am now working off the internal drive. When I plug in the Firewire drive it shows up on the desktop. When i go to system preference I can select the Firewire drive as the startup disk - BUT when I restart the iBook it does not boot up from the external Firewire HDD. I also noticed that I cannot access my documents, pictures, MP3's on my Firewire Drive when I look through the contents - Did I lose them, or just don't have priveleges??
I am not sure what the problem is and why the iBook refuses to boot up from the external firewire drive. The internal drive still shows the SMART status as failing, and I am not in a position to replace it right away. I need to be able to get my iBook to boot back up from the Firewire Drive.
    Please help
    Thanks
    Vir

I managed to get the problem sorted out.
I first started the iBook from the internal HDD and then went to System Preference to select the startup disk. I selected MAC OS 9 on the external HDD as the start up disk.
The iBook started up from the external Firewire drive using OS 9. OS 9 also showed that the iBook had not sut down properly the last time and verified the disk. Once I got the iBook started in OS 9 I went to the Control panel and then to Startup Disk. I noticed that I had 2 versions of OS X on the external Firewire HDD - one which said "OS 10.x.x previous system" and another which said OX 10.x.x. (When I select startup disk from OS 10.x.x it does not show both these options, only OS 10.x.x) I remembered that when I was reinstalling the OS (as recommended by the Apple Dealer) my settings etc were saved as "previous system". I seleected "OS 10.x.x " not "OS 10.x.x previous sytem" on the external HDD and re-started and it booted up ok.
My question here is - why does this additional startup option show up on OS 9 but not on OS 10? I figure that the iBook was trying to startup from OS "10.x.x. previous system" when it actually should have needed to startup from "OS 10.x.x.". This problem must have occured when I shut down ...
Is it ok to delete the OS X.x.x.previous system folder without losing any data etc??
    Thanks

  • G5 iSight Wont Boot Tiger From DVD!!

    Hello All,
I am a Mac amateur and I am having trouble with an iMac G5 iSight.
I am considered the IT man of the family but have little experience with Macs but understand that they don't install/function like pcs.
Here's my problem. My Uncle has this iSight G5 and has hardly ever used it since he bought it so I have took it off him. He has a user and password prompt at the startup(can't remember either). He says he doesn't want anything thats on the machine so I thought I'd do a clean install/erase from inserting the install disc and holding down the 'option' key at startup to boot to the dvd but when I do this, it only shows the Macintosh Disk and no Install Disc icon to start the install. I also heared that pressing the c key at start up will boot to the cd but this does nothing and just boots up OS X as normal of the hard drive. I am doing this with the original backup disks but also tried with a copy of OS X 10.4.2 but that isnt recognised when booting with the option key held. This is driving me mad. My brother has a 'non' iSight G5 and doing the option key reboot with the G5 restore disk you can see the install icon and same applies to the Tiger install DVD.
    Can anyone help?
The grey restore discs are OS X 10.4.2
    AHT v 2.5.3
    Disc v 1.1
    Thanks
    Scaseman
    iMac G5 iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Not only is installing the right files a concern with the Target Disk Mode method, the iSight's installer disk may refuse to install anything at all since in TDM the iSight's drive appears as just another drive attached to the non-iSight model. If the installer is like the one for my rev B model, the only OS install option also installs the bundled iLife apps. Since these apps are otherwise a retail product, the installer may check for a matching model & refuse to run because it will detect a non-iSight one.
    Other things to consider:
    A. The iSight model is not constructed like the two earlier iMac G5's to be user serviceable. The case back does not come off; rather, the front bezel & LCD screen must be removed to access the interior components. Since this was not designed to be done by users, this involves carefully removing a taped in place black film mask, removing hard to reach Torx head screws, & handling the bare LCD screen assembly. This would almost certainly void the warranty & might damage something if done by the inexperienced.
    B. Find out if the iSight model was registered with Apple by the original owner. If so, have it transfered to your name so you can call Applecare with your issues. Also consider the Applecare extended protection plan.

  • Screen is white wont boot OS 10.7

I bought this computer used and was loading my iTunes library onto it when it forze.  I shut down the computer now it wont boot up.

  • Ibook G4 OS 10.4.11 wont boot up.

I was deleting a second user account and whilst it was copying that user's files before deleting the power was switched off. Starting now gives the flashing question mark icon after the start up chime. It wont boot up from the instal disc either (holding c while powering up). I also tried command-option-p-r at power up with no effect, and option key with the install disc to use the hardware test. This last gave me an arrow cursor but nothing else. The user guide suggests that the only option is to reinstall the operating system but to do this it needs to read the install disc which it can't. Help.

The new disc finally arrived from Apple - labeled "Mac OS Tiger DVD 2Z691-5599A".
    - Inserted disc and start up holding C key ... sounds of disc being active followed eventually by flashing question mark. If "disc eject" button is pressed the question mark stops flashing.  The only available action is to switch off with power button.
    - restart holding down option key (to try hardware test) ... again sounds of active disc, this time followed by blank screen with movable arrow cursor. This time apple-control-power was effective - not to restart but to shut down.
    - ejecting disc by starting whilst pressing mouse pad works.
    - shutting down seems to vary .. sometimes just a quick press of power button, sometimes has to be held for a few seconds before shutting down.
Maybe Apple have sent the wrong disc?
There is a repeated quiet clicking throughout which I interpret as the hard disc trying to run. It seems like the hard disc needs a little nudge like the needle in a scratch on a vinyl LP!
Reading more from http://support.apple.com suggested a few things to try:
    - start up in single user mode (holding Command-S) : failed
    - start up in safe mode (holding shift key) : failed
Back to the OSX 10.5.6 install DVD I tried previously: this seems to work and gave a utilities menu:
    - "System profiler" found the hard disc under serial ATA - Intel ICH7-M AHCI
    - "Disc utility" failed to find it.
    - "Terminal" loaded but when I tried to enter sudo nvram boot-args="-x" as suggested to start in safe mode it returned "command not found" so that got nowhere.
    - "Restore system from backup" utility isn't active, presumably because it doesn't recognize a hard drive to restore it to?
I have an external hard disc used for some back up. When I connected it to the USB port both system profiler and disc utility found it ok but "start up disc" utility didn't. Unfortunately it doesn't have a system on it. If it did could I start up from it and would that help? How would I install a system onto it? (I'm typing this on an oldish Powermac G4 desktop running OSX 10.4.11)
I will phone Apple first opportunity to check the correctness of the disc. However I do wonder if it can be any better than the 10.5.6 disc anyway.
It seems that what I need is some way of getting access to the hard disc.
Sorry for the length of this - but any more suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • 24" iMac - Wont boot from HD or disc... Help!

    Hi guys,
Just been working on iMac, forget the exact spec but it's a 24" Intel 2.something Core 2 Duo or whatever it is, 4gb DDR2 RAM, gotta be about 2 years old to the day and after my last 2 Macs have lasted forever, never developing a fault, I didn't take out Applecare... Perhaps I had a bit too much faith...
As I say, just working away and all of a sudden, upon putting a video in Quicktime to full screen, the whole image has kinda of condensed itself into the top 20% of the screen and started slightly flickering the image. I've tried quitting some of the programmes, but neither the mouse nor leyboard have been responding so I've just had to turn the computer off.
I've gone to turn it back on, and after about 30 seconds, it's got as far as the grey screen but then the little spinning progress indicator pauses and it does nothing else.
I've reset the PRAM and that made it take longer before it froze but ultimately did nothing.
I've now tried getting it to boot from the Snow Leopard disc but this does the something, until after about 3 - 5 minutes, the screen goes all pshychedlic, like looking at an old school TV really close...
So looking for any suggestions on other things to try before I have to take to my local store... Any hazard a guess at what may be up with it?
I've got a back up the whole computer but I don't think this is a software problem, I'm assuming it's going to be a hardware one?
Any help at all would be much appreciated!

Ok, tried Safe Mode and that wont boot either. Saw a little progress bar on the grey screen though which made a change, but ultimately, it crashed once that had disappeared.
I've just noticed that at the point when the progress wheel stops spinning, a pattern of dead pixels appears across the screen that aren't there when the progress wheel is spinning.
The more I talk to people about this, the more graphics card seems to come back as the likely culprit, based on the fact that:
    - it started by me putting a video to full screen
    - the fact the display went weird when it first happened and also it plays up after it crashes with the psychedelic colours
    - it wont boot from HD, disc or now in safe mode either, however it does run AHT fine.
    - I've hoovered out the vents on the iMac and somehow it seems slower than it was before (bit odd)
    - the dead pixel thing mentioned above
So now thinking it may be time to get a new graphics card?
Reckon this is likely, even though the AHT hasn't picked up any problems? As mentioned earlier, I'm not too concerned about it would seem it doesn't particularly test the graphics card too much, so all just seems to point towards it.
Anything else that I could do to single this out as the likely culprit?
Guess this is a chance to upgrade!

  • My mac mini wont boot from disk

My 2010 Unibody Mac Mini wont boot from disk, i need to open disk utility to repair my drive but it wont boot, any ideas?

  • Pavillion zv5000 laptop wont boot from cd after mobo and hdd replace

So I inherited a dead zv5000 laptop with no hdd.  I replaced the motherboard and CPU, and it powered up and booted from the cd drive with no hdd installed.  I was able to run memtek and the original hp os recovery discs, with no hdd installed.
Then I put in an empty hdd.  The bios sees the hdd ok, but I suddenly can't boot from the cd drive.  The bios settings are correct, and the discs spin in the cd drive, but it wont boot with the recovery discs, memtek, or an original xp install disc.
When I remove the hdd, it still wont boot from the cd drive.
So I google and I read stuff about hp tattoos on hdds and motheboards and dmi, and no passwords for the average person to do the tattoo.
So what do I need to do ?  I don't understand why it was good with the new motherboard, but as soon as I plugged in an hdd it wont do anyting.  I cant update bios because I cant boot past the bios, and not sure how that would help anyway.

If you have an open firmware password, delete it. It will not boot off anything but HD with OF password. Or at least thats what it was for me.

  • Itunes let me buy a song, but now wont let me buy anything else. How do I delete the song from my billing receipt so I can start updating my apps again?? PLEASE HELP

I had gotten a gift card with around $20 on it so I decided to buy some songs. I had bought a few, then I bought the last song, and now iTunes wont allow me to update my apps, or let me download any other apps because apparently I have $0 on my card; The weird part about that is it let me keep the song, but wont let me get anything else regardless of the charge. I don't have a credit card myself, so I'm really trying to avoid buying another gift card for one 99 cent song. Does anyone know how to get rid of a song from the billing receipt? I've tried everything!
    Thanks

there are four apps for my son on my ipad, that the itunes store will not let me purchase from my ipad thru the app or on it. it wont let me buy the whole app so my lil one can enjoy. i have tried everything. i have updated everything and restarted everything and it still wont let me purchase anything. all it tells me to to go to the itunes store support. i did and i see no solution

I think that you mean that you are getting a message to contact iTunes Store Support. There must be some issue with your account that only iTunes support can solve for you.
Go here and click on the iTunes Store Support link on the right side and then in the next window, click on Purchases, Billing and Redemption, then click on Unable to Purchase from the iTunes Store, then click on email in the next window. Send an email and tell them what you are experiencing.

  • How to undo boot camp, wont boot from install disk in dvd drive

A few months ago I went through trying out boot camp and parallels. Now, I think something is messed up. I dont need either right now, so I just want to wipe out the whole system, repartition the drive, and restore to a blank new install of os x 10.5 leopard.
But when I put in the install disk, it wont boot up off it.
I tried holding down the c key while powering it up, and it just cycles through: hearing the drive whirl, a bling sound, and then repeating it again while the screen is blank. Finally, I held down the click button on the touch pad so it would eject the install disk.
Maybe this will help someone recognize part of the problem. Ever since messing around with boot camp and parallels, my machine wont "reboot". To reboot it, I tell it to reboot, then it hangs on the star like screen, then I have to hold the power button down, then if I do nothing, it tries to boot, but ends up in a dos looking screen saying no bootable device. So when I power it back up, I hold down the alt key, and then I have one choice: the hard drive. I pick that and it boots up ok.
So... I thought, well, maybe the boot camp is still messed up; maybe I should undo boot camp. When I start the boot camp assistant, there is only a "partition" and "back" button; nothing to "restore" the hard drive to just one partition.
What can I do? I want to wipe the drive and install a fresh install from my install disk.

    Forgot to specify:
Im using an older Unibody Macbook (back when they were not all macbook pro's) 2008ish with Snow leopard 1.6.8
The thread you linked me to, Eric, shows the guy 'Niganit' with the eXACT SAME PROBLEM as me! He seems to have found out the problem but I dont see his resolve.

  • I reinstalled osx 10.8.2 from recovery disk, now verify disk says my hard drive is there but wont boot into it regardless which partition i select to boot into , everytime it boots me into the recovery, i need help!

Mb pro running like garbage with 10.8.2 tried a reinstall of osx from recovery utility now the utility says my hard drive is ok but wont boot into it keeps booting me back into recovery tried restart option to select disk tried using the select startup disk from recovery, gives a message asking if i really want to boot to it and in that message is the only rime it shows a question mark on the drive dont know what to do cant find similar issue

Your rushing and not making much sense.
Your machine was running like garbage, so you tried to reinstall 10.8---did you do this or not?
Disk Utility says your drive is ok, that's good.
But when you boot it keeps booting Recovery HD, so perhaps the firmware has made a mistake, it can forget.
You held the option key down to boot into Startup Manager, why didn't you select OS X for the boot volume?
When you get into OS X you change the Startup Disk in System Preferences, that should take care of the Flashing Question mark issue.
attemtping to ireinstall osx from recovery partition bar is full on install screen, but im now at -6hours remaining
So now your reinstalling OS X like you set out to do before, it does take some time as it has to download from Apple's servers.
If your Internet connection is slow and/or Wifi is slow then it will take awhile.
So you should have the Flashing Question Mark and Reinstall Only OS X covered.
You should be able to boot the machine, but your performance issues may be something else and still remain.

  • Wont boot from cd???

I have a slot-loading iMac that wont boot from a CD.
Does anyone know why? I have tried holding C and choosing the CD as a start-up disk but it doesnt work. The CD i am trying to start-up on is the Mac OS 9 CD.
    Can anyone help??
    Thanks Daniel.

Did you have any luck on this?
I am having the same quandry. I have a slot-loading 450MHZ imac which I purchased used with 10.2 installled on it. When I tried to upgrade to 10.3 using my black retail CD I own I was told I needed to upgrade the firmware. Then I discovered that Classic had been deleted from this computer, so had no way to boot in 9.2.2 to install the Firmware update....so I figured I would have to start from scratch from my white 9.0 retail CD and do the upgrades to 9.2.2, but it wouldn't boot from the white CD.
Then I followed instructions I found here and used my 10.3 disc to access Disk Utility and reformatted the HD with the OS 9 Drivers (losing the 10.2 install it had in the process), and reset the PRAM twice.
So now I just get a gray screen with the flashing Question Mark in a folder. I have tried an external CD drive to confirm it's not a problem with the optical drive and have booted from the OS 9 CD on another slot-loading imac to confirm it's not a problem with the Disk. I have a 9.0 CD and a 10.3 CD but nothing in between.
    Still no luck...
