Need a good external case

Hello there. Does anyone know of a good external firewire & USB 2.0 case for a DVD burner? I also need it to work with Mac & PC. Any ideas?

I'm very happy with the external cases by http://www.granitedigital.com/ (also known as Relax Technologies). I haven't used one that has USB 2, but there 1170 case is very good for hard drives. Not sure though how well it will work with a DVD burner. Might want to check http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ to see if there are any issues with specific cases on DVD burners.

Personally, I usually buy Seagates or WDs when they are up on rebates, then turn my savings around into a second drive. Not exactly the fastest, sleekest or coolest but the safer since they are very reliable and several of the boutiques are just the same drives in flashy enclosures - and lotsa extra marketing.
So it's kinda like twice as much storage but the enclosures aren't as cool and slight performance loss in some cases a little less flexibity in some cases but you have extra safety. If you want nice enclosures and controllers, I recommend OWC - then stuff it with... a Seagate or WD : ^)

Good external monitor recommendations for T61?

I need a good external monitor for my T61, the bigger the better. I would prefer to keep the branding the same with Lenovo. Does anyone have any advice? Should I go with another manufacturer? The Apple displays are really cool. Does Lenovo make anything similar?

2 hard drives full. need good external solution

i have a PowerMac g5 2.5 Ghz with a 150 GB main hard drive (the original) and an added 250 GB hard drive in the second drive slot. I have a >100GB Aperture library now (a lot of 5D raws). I am diligent about backing up to a vault on the other drive. This combined with some movies, all my iTunes, etc I'm full with only 8GB left on my boot drive. I've been shuffling stuff around but the need to have a lib on one drive and a vault on the other leaves me with little room.
Now I could skip the vault stuff if I had some protected RAID setup like RAID 0 or 5 since the drive would have redundancy built in. How much slower does aperture run when you go from an internal SATA drive to an external FireWire 800 drive. Or should I get a eSATA setup? Anyone know if there are any good eSATA cards for my machine? What drive do you recommend and what capacity. I figure at least 500 GB of actual storage taking into account the RAID config (so raid 0 would need to be a Terabyte). Any good drive values out there?
Would love to see what you guys with really big libraries are doing.

Yes and no, you should keep your OS and Aperture app on something relatively fast... ie the internal drive(s) Swap files, Virtual memory, etc are all stored here, and any bottlenecks can slow things down. I use a pair of striped Raptors, but I think that there are better, simpler solutions available now.
As for your library raw speed seems to be less critical for aperture (exception: backing up with the vaults), I would skip the USB altogether, in my experience the speed varies quite a bit and it isn't hard to plug something else into your computer that unwittingly knocks the USB 2.0 speed down to 1.1. FW 400 is probably enough though my experiences wth FW 800 are much better.
However; I think Sata is the consistant winner here. For backups I have an external case similar to this:

or these which are a bit smaller, but don't generally have internal fans (the fans are in the fixed part of the case or rack), the drives are exposed when removed, but they are a bit smaller and generally cheaper, you can fit 5 of them in the space of three standard bays.

This allows me to purchase bare 250gig drives for around 70$ now, drop them in a tray for about 12-30 $$ depending on model, and where purchased. Then use them like high speed 250gig floppies.

Need Help with External Hard drives and too much music

I am not terribly tech-savvy, and I need your help. I have a G5 PPC dual processor with an internal 250GB drive. I have two seagate firewire/USB2 external hard drives. One is 250GB and one is 350GB. I want to know how to use them to get my Mac to run faster and better.
My original hard drive is 7GB shy of being full. Almost half of this is my itunes library which is over 100GB. The older (250GB) hard drive has about 150GB of photos/videos.
My Mac is running slow as molasses and when I power up the external hard drives it slows down to what I recall my original Mac Plus ran like.
I use the G5 primarily to work with photos, illustrations and creating the occasional DVD with video and photos. the apps I use most often are Photoshop, Illustrator and Painter. I always listen to music while work.
I hope all of this information is helpful! Here is my question:
What is the best way for me to set up and use these external hard drives to return my G5 to its original blazing (to me) fast speed?

I think you should look at adding two 500GB internal drives. I'd say Maxtor MaxLine Pro for cost, but they also run much warmer (43ºC even when nearly doing zilch) so I'd go with WD RE2 500GB for $40 ea. more.
dump whatever you don't need, trash anything that is hogging space and is just temp file or useless cache. Web browsers can leave behind a ton of small files eating up tens of MBs.
Use SuperDuper to backup/clone your drive.
Disk Warrior 4 to repair (after it gets to 15% free, or just forget for now).
A 250GB drive formats to 240GB and you have ~3% free it looks like.
For every data drive plan to have two backup drives.
Keep your boot drive to 40% used.
And your data drive to 60%.
Backups can go a little higher.
Drives are cheap and inexpensive, especially for the space and performance. And they have improved SATA over the years it has been out.
By doing a backup followed by erasing your drive, and then restoring it, using SuperDuper, which optimizes the organization, skips copying temp files that aren't needed, it also defragments your files. I would do backup daily to different sets that you "rotate." And before any OS update. And do the erase and restore probably every 2 months.
Make sure you keep one drive partition somewhere that is just your disk utility emergency boot drive that is not a copy of working system, used for doing repairs like running Disk Warrior and Disk Utility.
You may need to repair; backup; even erase and restore your external drives. Rather than spend on vendor made case, just pick up a good FireWire case either with drive, or bare (and add your own). I think it'd add 500GB FW drive though.
Why?
To begin backup of your current drive. To leave your other FW drives "as is" for now.
Then install a new internal 500GB drive as well so you now have a good current backup, and you have moved your data off 250GB to 500GB. If anything happens, you have one off line FW backup.
Then begin to clean up, organize, and get your FW drives working. It sure sounds like they have had some directory or file problems.

Looking for a good folio case for the iPad mini... any suggestions?

I'm interested in a good folio case that includes the smart cover feature. I'm particularly interested in a case that has durability (most of the inexpensive ones on Amazon seem to fall apart over time).
The other feature I'd like would be for the case to fold flat against the back in reading mode; even be held magnetically in that position.
In any event, what are you all using and what would you recommend?

If you enable your iPod for disk use, you should be able to do this without utilities (unless iTunes checks for this kind of thing). See, all of your music is stored (with garbled filenames) under <D:/iPod_Control/Music/> (where "D" is your iPod). So if you use iTunes's "Add Folder to Library" on the "iPod_Control/Music" folder, it should import your iPod files.
So do this,
1. Set Windows to show hidden files and folders, if it isn't already. There are plenty of guides for this on Google.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Enable disk use on your iPod, if you haven't already.
4. Go to File > Add Folder to Library....
5. In the Open Folder dialog box, navigate to your iPod.
6. Go into the iPod_Control folder.
7. Select the Music folder. Click OK.
Note that on Windows, the iPod_Control folder (and its contents) are hidden, so you need to set Windows to show hidden files and folders.

What's a good External Hard Drive to use with Time Capsule

I have a MacBook and a 1GB Time Capsule, and until recently used my TC to store and access the music and video files I've purchased from the iTunes store as well as my Time Machine backups. The HD in the TC crashed a few months ago, and necessitated a long, drawn out and somewhat expensive restore to get everything off the crashed drive before restoring it. So now, I simply want to use the TC as a backup using Time Machine, but I also want a good external hard drive that is either wireless and can either be connected through the TC's WiFi base station capabilities or can plug in to the TC's USB port.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Most USB drives should work fine. But there isn't much power on the USB port, so bus-powered drives must be connected via a powered hub.
And several folks have reported that larger drives, over about 750 GB, even if they have their own power, need a powered hub, too.
And be aware that Time Machine, like most backup apps, cannot back up from any network drive. The Chronosync app may be a usable alternative.

I personally can think of two options.
1. Mount the drive in which the copy of the first hard drive will go to inside of the 2.7gHZ G5's case. There is room for two hard drives in there. See Link for Help

Once it is installed, simply boot off of your Mac OS Install media (CD, DVD, USB) it can be any version that supports the PowerPC platform. You need to boot holding the "C" key. Then choose Disk Utility and hit the restore tab. Drag the old partition to the "Source" field and the new hard drive to the "destination" field.
2. Put the second hard drive into the second (idle) G5. You will need a copy of the Mac OS install DVD as again you cannot clone a drive when it is in use (running the operating system). Hold down the "T" key at boot up and then a firewire logo will bounce on the monitor. then plug the cable into the 2.7 g5 and start it up

Posting your email address can open up you to tons of unwanted spam, among other things. Really all you can do is search the internet for them. My suggestion would be to google "case for late 2007 macbook pro".
One will probably be very hard to find for a 6 year old model as it is on the borderline of being considered "vintage". Ebay may be a good place to try too.

Any external hard drive that will connect via Firewire 800, USB, or Thunderbolt will work.
I have a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio drive in an OWC case, sitting on a Backpack, which connects via Firewire. Western Digital Scorpio drives have 5 year warranties, the OWC (macsales.com) cases usually use the Oxford chipset which works well with macs, and the Backpack is a slick way to mount a backup drive without taking up desk space.
After you hook up whatever external drive you end up with, you'll partition and initialize it for OS X, then begin using it.
My opinion, I would not get a Western Digital pre-packaged external drive/case. While the hard drives are OK, there have been a number of people that have had issues with the electronics.

Developing a simple application using steps "User Decision" and "Mail"
Basic terminology used in the workflow:
The workflow definition is the set of rules that determine the path that the process takes. For example, how a purchase requisition is processed, from the initial request to the creation of the purchase order
A Workflow Instance, which is often simply referred to as the workflow, is a single workflow run. For example, the processing of a single purchase requisition for computers.
The Tasks are the steps in the process, which have to be performed either by people or automatically by the software. For example, to check for the availability of the spare computers in the company.
A Work item is the task instance that is performed as a single workflow step. For example, check that there are no spare computers available in the company.
Agents are the people who process the tasks (via the work items). For example, requisitioner and a member of the purchasing department.
Container is the place where all the data used in the workflow is collected.
Binding is the set of rules that define which data is passed to which part of the process.
Building a simple workflow application
The central tool for creating, displaying and processing a workflow is the workflow builder (Transaction SWDD). Within the workflow builder you can create all components of a workflow, including all the containers you need for getting the data from one step to another.
Generally, most of the workflows are started by an event (for example, when a material is created or when a new purchase requisition arrives). You define which data from this event needs to be passed to the workflow via binding.
However you can also start any workflow directly. Let us create a simple workflow and start the workflow directly, using the testing tools.
Call transaction SWDD. When the workflow builder is called for the first time, a newly created initial workflow definition appears or else last created workflow appears. In such cases you can opt to create a new workflow by pressing Create New Workflow(ctrl + shft + F5). The following screen appears.
The initial workflow screen has the following parts:
a. The start of the workflow definition, indicated by .
b. The end of the workflow definition, indicated by .
c. The area in which you insert the new workflow definition is indicated by .
Now select the undefined step and select Create step or double click the undefined step. Now among the different steps chose the User Decision by double clicking on it.

Now enter the title for the user decision Please make a decision. Also enter the decision texts as Approve and Reject. Now we need to include a mail step to be sent to the requestor. Now select the line Approve and do a right click. Different options on shown on the context menu. Select Create.
Now select the step Send Mail from the list.

Do not change the recipients. Our mail is intended for the persons who triggered this workflow. &_WF_INITIATOR& contains the value who executed the workflow. Since this is a test object, we are using &_WF_INITIATOR&. But we wouldnt be using this variable in real time scenarios. We would discuss about this in the coming documents.
Now select Transfer and to graphic button.
A popup appears requesting for the abbreviation and the name for this task. Enter the same and press enter.
Now enter the package as local object and press enter.
Follow the steps 5 through 9 for the step Reject. The following screen appears:
Press SAVE to save the workflow application. You need to enter an abbreviation and name for your workflow as shown below. You can change any of these at any later point. After saving, a number is assigned to your workflow starting with WS, as shown below.

Test the workflow by choosing Test. The following screen appears.
Now choose Execute to start the workflow.

Choose one among Approve or Reject as part of the user decision. He can select the third option to retain the work item in his inbox and make the decision later. Now suppose that the recipient has chosen one of the first options. Now a mail would be sent to the requestor with the status of his request.
Creating a Container element
This document details about creation of a container element in workflow and using it in the step "Mail".
Pre-requisites:
It is assumed that the reader of this Tutorial is aware of creating a workflow definition with the step Mail. If not, please go through the document on creating the same available, by clicking here.
Steps:
1. Create a workflow definition using the transaction SWDD.
2. Lets create a container element for Carrier id. Click on the Workflow Container on the left side of the screen (as shown in the screenshot below):
3. Now double-click on Double-Click to Create
4. Enter the details pertaining to CARRID here.
5. Click on tab Properties and select Import.
6. Click on Confirm (Enter).
7. Now the element created could be seen on the left side, below the Workflow Container.

8. Enter the value of the Carrid as shown above and press execute.
9. A mail would be sent to the recipient mentioned earlier with the carrid value entered.

Pre-requisites: It is assumed that the reader of this document has a preliminary understanding of workflow and has worked with the container elements earlier. If not, please go through the first two Tutorials of workflow available in this site. (More details)
Procedure:
1. Create a new workflow definition.
2. Create a container element, CARRID (as demonstrated in tutorial 2).
3. Now click on undefined step and create the step Condition.
4. Enter the step name of your choice.
5. We would have the following condition here:
If carrid = AA.
Do this.
Else.
Do this.
Click on Click here to create a new condition. Following screen appears.
Double click on Carrid. Next click on = and enter the value AA in the constant field and press ENTER.
Enter the outcome names of your choice as shown above.

2. Create a container element, CARRID (as demonstrated in tutorial 2).
3. Now click on undefined step and create the step Multiple Condition.
4. Enter the step name of your choice.
5. We would have the following condition here:

Select the CARRID using the F4 help for the comparison basis field.

Scenario: In this tutorial, we would deal about how to work with the step Container Operation with an example of calculating the available seats by subtracting occupied seats from the maximum seats at the workflow level.
Procedure:
1. Create a new workflow definition using the transaction SWDD.
2. Create two container elements MaxSeats, Occ_Seats with the import property set. You can use the reference fields sflight-seatsmax, sflight-seatsocc for this.
3. Create another container element AvailableSeats without setting either import or export property as this is calculated within the workflow and used within the workflow. You might use any of the above reference fields as data types.
4. Define a new step Container Operation in the workflow definition by double-clicking on the Undefined step.
5. In this step, we would calculate the available seats from the max seats and seats occupied.
I would recommend entering all the container elements from the F4 help instead of typing them manually.
6. Return to the main screen.
7. Create a mail step after this to send the available seats information.
8. Test the above functionality by passing some values to the maximum and the seats occupied.

Choose the Work Item Creation from the list box.
After selecting Work Item Creation, chose an offset of 5 minutes. This means that the work item must be executed within 5 minutes of the creation, if not this would trigger.
Deadline Monitoring in SAP Workflow
Enter recipient details to whom the message to be escalated, if the work item is not executed with in 5 minutes after work item creation.
Save and activate the workflow definition.
Testing the workflow application:
Execute your workflow.
Check for the work item in the SAP Inbox. This time do NOT execute the work item.
Wait for the deadline to be triggered. After that, a deadline message is delivered to the recipient mentioned in the Latest End tab. See the screenshot below.
Dont worry if the deadline message doesnt appear immediately after 5 minutes. This depends on various factors including how the deadline monitoring program is scheduled and also on the availability of the background processors.
Use SWWA to check how the deadline monitoring program is scheduled in program.
For example, assume that our work item has been created at 09:10 hrs and the deadline message is expected to trigger at 09:15 hrs. From the above screenshot, it is understood that the background program is scheduled to execute for every 3 minutes. Assume that the last run of the program is at 09:14hrs and the next run is expected at 09:17hrs. So even our deadline expires at 09:15, the deadline message would appear only at 09:17hrs after execution of the background program.
Some more points
In our above example, we have used the deadline on the Work Item creation time. i.e., 5 minutes after creation time, the deadline message would be sent. Now we would check the other option Expression. Here we can mention the date and time, when the deadline message should appear irrespective of the work item creation date/time.
As seen in the above screenshot, we can provide the target date and time by which the task should be finished. Container elements could be used in this case. Please refer to our example on creation of container elements (click here).
Personal Substitute in Workflow
Requirement: Need to have at least one substitute who can act upon work items in your absence.
Important: The appointed substitute would be able to see all your work items. A substitute cannot be assigned for only particular area of organization or any other item. So need to ensure that the substitute have the necessary authorizations to act upon the work items.
Procedure:
1. Go to SAP Business Work Place (TCode: SBWP)
2. Now from the menu bar, select Settings à Workflow settings à Maintain Substitute
3. Highlight/Select the name on the window, in this case SAPDEV02 and click on Create Substitute.
4. List of users available in the system are displayed.
5. Select the required substitute user name. Following screen appears.
Validity field describes about the period in which the setting would be active. Note that the dates on the screen would range from the current date to 31st Dec 9999.
Regarding the checkbox Substitution active, it is advised to leave this checkbox unchecked for system performance reasons. A check in this box indicates that the substitution is permanent and if left unchecked it is treated as as-needed. A permanent substitute will automatically receive the primary users work items in their own box. In the case of as-needed, substitute must manually adopt the work items from the primary users inbox.
6. Save the entries
7. Click Enter to leave the screen.
Adopting a Substitute in Workflow
If you have been designated as an as-needed substitute, you must manually adopt the substitution. If you are designated as a permanent substitute, the work items would automatically appear in the inbox.
Before adopting a substitution, there are 19 work items in the inbox. See the screenshot below:
To adopt a substitution, select Settings à Workflow settings à adopt substitution.
Select the corresponding User-id (if you have been assigned as a substitute for multiple people, then this option would allow you to select the user name of whom you would to check the work items)
The corresponding users work items would appear in our inbox now.
You can end the substitution, by selecting settings à Workflow settings à End substitution.
Note: Substitutes can only adopt work items that are directly routed to the person for whom they are a substitute. If you are a substitute for a user (SAPDEV02) who has been made a substitute for another user (SAPDEV01), you will only see work items for user SAPDEV02 and not of the user SAPDEV01.
Notification of Work Items via e-Mail
SAP provides us with a facility of notifying the user via the email address of your choice when there are any pending work items in the SAP Inbox..
1. Go to Transaction SO13.
2. Click on Automatic Forwarding tab.
3. Click on Create icon .
4. Enter the details in the above screen.
5. Click ENTER to complete the entries.
6. Now the notification would be received at the provided email address if there are any pending work items in the inbox.
Filtering the Work Items in the SAP Inbox using BADI
This document details about the procedure in filtering some of the work items from the SAP inbox using a BADi.
Following is the screenshot of the SAP inbox, before implementing BADi:
The BADi that is used in filtering the work items is WF_BWP_SELECT_FILTER. To implement the BADi, go to transaction SE18. From the menu, select Implementation à Create. (See the screenshot below)
Enter the implementation name and press ENTER
Enter any meaningful short text for the implementation and click on the tab Interface
The implementing class, ZCL_IM_BWP_SELECT_FILTER, is automatically proposed. Double click on the implementing class name.
You are now navigated to the class builder. Now double-click on the method name shown on the screen (see the snapshot below)
Now let us filter out the work items belonging to the task TS2000066. See the code below:
Activate the method and also the implementation. In the state of active, you wouldnt be able to make any changes. To make any changes, we need to deactivate it and then make the changes.
Now check the inbox and would notice that the work items related to that task are no more appearing.
To notice the differences, try activating and deactivating the BADi implementation.

Need a good camera

Hi. I'm looking for a webcam with a fairly high quality picture to use with a mac pro tower. I tried using the logitech quickcam 9000 although the software is only for windows. The picture quality of the camera was very good , and it was only about 75 dollars or so. However, I really need one with zoom in and still shot functions. What is a good external webcam that isnt much more than 100 dollars, and has a nice high quality picture with some zooming and/or still pic features? thanks.

Above OS 10.4.9 you should be able to use any Camera that is USB Video Class (UVC) Compliant.
This does include many of the Logitech range and the X-Box 360 Camera.

Need recommendation for external DVD burner drive!

I'm one of the officers for a film club at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Recently, I discovered that we had, in our offices, a fully-functional, if not somewhat dated, iMac G4. After getting the neccessary OS X upgrades (it's now running the latest version, 10.4.8), I need to upgrade the CD drive, which is currently just a CD burner drive. It can't even play DVDs, much less burn them, both things we need to have working if we want people in our organization to be able to use this computer.
Since I don't want to physically remove the drive and replace it with an internal DVD burner drive, I'd like a recommendation for a good external one. I noticed that there's only one option on the Apple Store, the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW Drive, and that doesn't look like it's been getting very good reviews. Does anyone have any other options I could choose from?

I have no experience of this model but this one from OWC (a company who get very good press on these boards) promises iDVD 5 and 6 support. It's somewhat cheaper than the Lacie in the Apple store but doesn't have Lightscribe.

Good external FW800 HDD for iMac?

Can anyone recommend a good external FireWire 800 hard drive (or hard drive enclosure) for the iMac? Basically I want something that doesn't look too terrible in case I have to leave it on my desk — i.e., not the usual extruded aluminum tube. Something that even remotely matches the iMac would be nice.
I would prefer a bare enclosure so I can put a 750GB drive in it, but I'll take recommendations for complete drives if they come in 500GB or larger.
G-Tech makes some nice stuff, but their prices are a bit silly (e.g., $560 for 500GB when the drive itself costs $200 — $360 is a way too much to pay for the enclosure, no matter how stylish).
A big plus would be a drive with auto-on/off or some kind of spin-down capability so I wouldn't have to turn it on and off all the time. Having more than one interface (e.g., USB 2.0 along with FW800) would be another plus.
The closest thing I can find is the LaCie d2, which seems cool but not too expensive, though I'm not sure about its auto-off/spindown functionality.

I love my Mercury Elite Pro from OWC. They have a ton of pre-configured drives as well as the bare enclosures HERE.
Whatever you decide, be sure to get a drive with the more reliable Oxford chipset as the more common and cheaper Prolific chipset has given some Mac users fits.
