Need advice on Pages for commercially printed publications.

Here is my situation. I have created a publication (a buy/sell classified magazine) using Pages.
Pages was recommended to me as opposed to Indesign or Quark as it has some great placeholder options for text and photos and would set up nicely as an easy template. So I spent 100s of hours setting up this document and getting it perfect and then off to the printer we go!
Firstly I should mention we are using cold set printing for those who are familiar with it... anyhoo... publication came back with VERY dark photos and even the text was not crisp.
Has anyone had cold set printing done from a publication or document done in Pages? Is the problem with the conversion to PDF? Any suggestions to fix the problem? Is lightening the pictures significantly going to work?
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Have you asked your printer about how they handle PDFs? Or, for that matter, what they thought went wrong with the file you sent them? As far as I know, there is nothing special about the PDF output of Pages, and any printer that can utilize PDFs properly should be able to use Pages output (at least as far as the text is concerned -- images may very well take some tweaking). This sounds like a matter you should address directly with your printer -- if they are any good, they should be willing to discuss this with you.
For the most part the commercial printing we've done from Pages was for digitally printed jobs, since we generally don't do large runs (1000+), but I have never had any problem with our printer services handling the PDF or producing less than acceptable results.

Need advice adapting page w/ onmouseover img swap to iPhone/iPad devices.
OK, we knew we needed to co-develop for touch-base devices, but this page forces the issue.
    See page at: http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/pages/voterresources/civics-toolkit/index.html
The page has two-state graphical buttons: a small button for the standard state and a large button in response to the onmouseover event. Navigation occurs onclick. Of course, touch-based devices like iPhone and iPad have no mouse over. The iPad displays the button just fine. However, the iPhone only shows the image until it is clicked. After that it is gone, even when one navigates away and back again after clicking it.
I imagine we should detect what device is browsing and then load only the large, more informative buttons when we detect a smartphone or tablet device.
    What's the best approach?
    Thanks in advance!

So iPhone an iPad have ontouchstart and ontouchend - the information you provided says Apple implemented these events. Perhaps I should have specified that the page needs to work well on all touch devices, including non-Apple data phones.
Do you know if these touch events or some other solution is supported cross platform?
Just to be sure I understand, I
ditch the onmouseover event in favor of using the a:hover pseudo-class to swap images. This swaps for all devices.
implement ontouchstart/ontouchend for iPhone and iPad to create begin and end points for the image swap. This works for iPhone/iPad and no special condition is needed for a device with a mouse.
use onclick to trigger navigation. This works for all devices.
    Thanks!

  • Using system fonts for commercial printing?

    Hi,
Does anyone know the licensing rights/usage for using system fonts for commercial printing? If I understand correctly, system fonts that comes from operating system CAN be use because Apple purchase the rights on them and end users that purchase OS can use these fonts freely as long as not we are not redistributing them for profit, etc.
Can anyone point me in the right direction with official documentation on the subject?
    Thanks!

Never mind, I found the answer. It's in Apple's OS EULA.
"E. Fonts. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you may use the fonts included
with the Apple Software to display and print content while running the Apple Software; however,
you may only embed fonts in content if that is permitted by the embedding restrictions
accompanying the font in question. These embedding restrictions can be found in the Font
    Book/Preview/Show Font Info panel."

  • Color assistance needed for commercial printer

    Hi there,
We're a board game publisher about to send our first game to an overseas manufacturer. The game is composed of hundreds of cards with detailed, fantasy art, and we're excited to get this game finally out the door.
We sent the raw, packaged indesign (CS6) files to a local printer to see how everything would look before we have 3,000 copies of the game made overseas. The local printer used the same process that the overseas printer will, a 4 color high-end printer that is certainly impressive to people new to the industry such as ourselves. The sample cards they printed came out with fantastic clarity, but the colors are very muted. It's not a subtle change in color like I might see when toggling RGB to CMYK in photoshop for example. Instead, the colors on the print out look like someone slid a color saturation slider on the entire indesign file down by 25%.
When we print on our low-end inket at the office, the resolution is obviously poor, but the colors look great and match our calibrated monitors. When we export to PDF using "Press Quality", everything looks perfect on multiple computers here and at other locations away from the office. It's only the most important step, printing on a full-blown, commercial printer that the colors look so muted.
Here are some crude photos I took on my phone to help show the difference.
These photos have our office, inkjet printer cards are more colorful and the high-quality commercial printer cards are muted (sorry for the strange alignment, this forum is rotating the images for some reason):
    http://www.watchtowergames.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-1.jpg
    http://www.watchtowergames.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-2.jpg
    http://www.watchtowergames.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-3.jpg
    Different cards here:
    http://www.watchtowergames.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-1b.jpg
    http://www.watchtowergames.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/photo-2b.jpg
I've researched about swatches and color profiles, but all my experimenting hasn't produced any difference on my end. Therein lies the challenge, as I cannot duplicate the problem here at the office. The colors look great in indesign, great in exported PDFs, and great on our inkjet printed cards. Only when we pay a decent amount of money to the local commercial printer do we get these muted colors in our samples. And the local printer says their setup is exactly the same as our overseas manufacturer, which is terrifying. We've spent 17 months agonizing over all the details of the look of our cards for aesthetic purposes and game play so that players can quickly identify each card type by color. These muted colors will really mess the game up. We're pulling our hair out over here.
The local printer has offered to provide a color correction service for us, but at $100 an hour, that sounds like a lot for a new business like ours.
Is there some setting inside indesign that we are missing? Is there a way to replicate the muted colors on our end so we can at least troubleshoot this? Is there a method to turn up the saturation, if you will, for 4 color printing? Should we bite the bullet and pay the local printer an arm and a leg to color correct this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Tom
P.S. Also, if it helps, when we had the local printer digitally print a sample, everything looked far too dark, which they said was a side effect of the digital print process.

    Thanks for the response, Rob.
We talked with a local printer as they assured us that their setup was the same standard that the overseas printer uses. They said the sample sheet they printed for us had marks on the edges. Supposedly, once we had everything matching up right with the local printer, we could mail the printed sheet here to the overseas printer and their system would put in the sheet with its colors on the edges and know exactly what we wanted. Heck, if I know. I'm picking this up as I go along.
By your post, it sounds like we have introduced an unnecessary variable (this local printer) and should just cut them out of the process and deal directly with the overseas printer. The challenge is that the next step is for them to make a sample game for us, and at $1,000 a sample game, it's going to get crazy expensive if we have to go through several samples. I'll see if they can just run a single sheet of cards as a test run like you suggested.
If the overseas printer sheet or sample game comes up with the muted color problem still, what steps happen next. I ask because I'm used to solving the issues and don't understand how to solve this one if it comes up again. Do I just tell them to "make it more vibrant" and they work their magic as professional printers, or is the expectation that I'm to go through each of our many illustrations and graphic designs and over-saturate them myself? I suppose we can cross that bridge when we get to it. It's just hard to work for 18 months on this game getting everything just right and now see this color issue that is out my hands that I cannot solve.
For color space, I think I understand you. Most of our art is RGB.Our Proof Setup is "CMYK - US SWOP v2".
    Thanks again for the information.

  • Do I need to buy Pages for my iMac?

I am trying to learn if I need to buy the ios Pages for $9.99 only and use it on iPad/iPhone/iMac, or must I also purchase the iWork Pages $19.99?

The iOS version of Pages will only work on your iDevices.
The OS X version of Pages will only work on your Macs.
So if you want to work with Pages both on your Macs and your iDevices then you need to purchase both of them.

When trying to set up my printer I get a box that says "Printers Code", is the "printer code" another word for hardware address or is it the access point hw address or what is it? I wish the HP people would stick to the same nomenclature in their set up!

    Hi,
Printer code is a code for your printer which allows you to register to ePrint center. From there you can get printer email address and you can email to this email address for printer to print. Not all printers have printer code. You can read more information from the following link:

  • Overly Excited New User Needs Advice on Windows for Mac

As of Christmas day, I am a proud owner of a new MBP 17" beautiful piece of machinery! I'm coming from a PC so you can imagine my excitement when I opened this gift from my parents. Also, I'm 33 years old so getting a gift this amazing from your parents is pretty huge!
Anyway, the point is I have to use a program for work that is only available for Windows and I just need some advice on whether to use Parallels or VM or just use the free boot camp. I don't want to use Windows for anything other than this program. Is there a way around having to buy the whole Windows OS? Also, is iWork any better than Office? Not sure which of those to buy either. I hate that I even have to have Windows on my new Mac! Thanks for any advice.

Hi eightezsteps, welcome to Apple Discussions!
What program do you need? Often PC programs have equivalents on the Mac platform, or even Mac versions that many people are not aware of. There are very few file formats that Macs cannot deal with.
The choice of Parallels, VMWare, or Boot Camp will also depend on whether you require 3D graphics support with that application. So, we'll need to know what it is!
is iWork any better than Office?
I prefer it to Office now after using it for a year. However, it is different, and there is a slight learning curve to it. Once you discover the differences from Office, you'll be as productive if not moreso. You should be aware that some of the more advanced features of Office are sometimes not included in iWork though. So if you require advanced formulas and macros in Excel (for example) to be cross-platform compatible then you'll need Office. If your work is slightly less hardcore than that, you'll be just fine with iWork once you get used to it.
I do some pretty extensive academic writing (scientific) using Pages and Numbers and I have never ran into anything it could not do for me. That includes formulae and scientific notation.

  • Need advice on Page file settings in Windows 7 x64

    Hi Guys
I just opgraded my main CS6 rig to a total of 32 GB RAM. This means, that the system has added allocated space for the page file on my system drive, a 128 GB Corsair Pro SSD disc, and I therefor only have 23 GB free.
I was wondering if I could put some or all of it on another, 240 GB SSD I have in my system that I use for PPRO previews, media cache etc. or I should simply upgrade my system drive to the 240 GB version?
I have 2 600 GB WD Raptor 10K rpm drives too, one for media and one for render, could maybe put it there too?
I am a bid unsure how to do this rigth, so any advice would be appreciated
    Thanks in advance.
    Ulf

....I am sure soon you will hear from others on this forum more knowledgeable than me....but, from what I've read hear before, to produce the fastest performance with your current  equipment would be to keep your OS and programs only on your current "C" drive. Assuming these SSDs are SATA III for best performance, you would then place a static pagefile at least 1.5x your installed system memory,(at least 48 GB), on the 240GB SSD, along with the previews, cache, and media cache files.
No need to worry about any "SSD reliability" issues on that drive, as all those files can easily be re-created.
Then , for fastest performance, you would create a 2 disk onboard RAID 0 with the two Raptors to place your media on for fastest editing performance. However, you must use an additional disk as the primary  location of your important, original media files.....then, you would copy those onto the RAID for editing speed.
Then, you may either : export to the 240GB SSD for faster export.....then copy those to that new additional 7200 RPM you must buy,or, just export to that new drive directly,( may take a little longer).
Newer Marvell controlled, ( not Sandforce), SSDs are supposedly able to handle "incompressible data", (like digital video files), well, without slowing down during writes. Storage Review and other sites have tested these.....Plextor and Corsair Pro series SSDs look to be the best, but, expensive.  I have NOT had any trouble so far with my SATA II Corsair F120 SSDs....at the time, 2 years ago, that drive was rated as having read and write speeds of over 200MB/sec. My tests showed that to be true. A large, cheap Marvell controlled SSD is the Crucial M4,( just issued new firmware)......it was as low as $339 for a 512GB recently.
In general, you will hear criticism here on using SSDs for video editing. Without using a huge RAID array and expensive controller card....the standard recommendation  for a system like yours is to have a five drive setup.....plus backup. One drive for OS and programs, plus two -2 drive onboard RAID 0 arrays.
Use of a single 7200rpm disk,( at 100-130MB/sec.) can slow you while editing.....hence the fast RAID arrays. Speed of OS drive is not that critical, once the program is up and running....it is your "project" disk speed that is important.
Once re-configured, you should visit the PPBM5 website, and see how your rig does with the benchmark test compared to other setups.

  • Setting up for commercial printing

I use Illustrator as my layout program for cards, which include text and photos.
I need to set up a job with a "clear foil" for printing. My contact's email says:
"will  be printed on matt paper and then add clear foil to the photo area" "we  ask that you provide the clear foil as a layered file"
This job has a very tight deadline and no time to discuss with the printer ahead of time.
Can someone help and explain how this needs to be set up?

It sounds like you're talking about the project being foil-stamped using a clear foil. If so, the printer simply needs to be able to print a solid image in the shape of the foil stamp.
That is customarily accomplished by using a spot color to fill the paths which will define the shape of the foil stamp. For example, you can simply define a Spot Color Swatch named "ClearFoil", draw the shapes that will be foil stamped, apply that Swatch to those objects, and set their fills to overprint.
Although it is a commonly-used organizational convenience to put those object(s) on a separate layer, it is not strictly necessary to do so. (This seems to be a recurring misconception in this forum lately that Layers are somehow linked to color separation.) What matters is which objects print to individual color separations (inks). That has nothing to do with which Layers those objects are on.
But in the case of things like foil stamps, varnishes, or die-cuts, it is usually sensible and convenient to put those objects on their own named Layer. (For example, name the Layer "Foil Stamp".) That's just a clear way to communicate the purpose, and it also makes it easy for the recipient to just turn on/off visibility of that layer when viewing the underlying artwork.

  • Needs advice on Cam for Music-Video!

Is the Sony HDR-FX1 a good choice to shoot Music-Video's and is it also the same HDR-FX1e.
Secondly the reviews on these Cam says PAL, so would it make a big difference in comparison to NTSC, or can you change to NTSC while your in FCP.
And what is the big difference in Shooting in PAL or NTSC?
Or even to edit in PAL or NTSC other than one being American base format and the Other European?
And how good is the Mic on the Cam or is it better to get another Mic in doing live Recordings on locations?
And whats the best intergration with Logic-Pro 7 ?
    L.P. 7.1.
    L.P. 7.2.1
    L.P. 7.2.3.
Or is it better with Logic-Pro 8?
And does it runs flawless on Tiger 10.4.9, in short what is the best OSX, or should i update to Leo?
    Fr.BlayZay.

I read about Panasonic AG-DVX 100 Cam that shoot in 24f and before its print in FCP, the pull down takes it to 29f.
And the Sony i believe shoot near enough the same as the Panasonic.
So if that's the case would the conversion of FCP for the pull down come out alright, there is no point really in jumping to another Forum when the integration is with FCP!
Just need to get a cam that integrates well with FCP for a budget of under $4,000.00 and in the range of 29.97f,
