Need explaination!?!? of simple code?!?!?

can some1 explain to me how the "for statement" works?.... if n equals 4
and what does index++ mean?
Thanks PPL!
public static void stars( int n )
int index;
if ( n > 0 )
for (index = 0; index < n; index++ )
System.out.print("*");
System.out.println( );
stars( n - 1 );
for (index = 0; index < n; index++ )
System.out.print("*");
System.out.println( );
}if n=4 then the code prints this out:

If you wan to clarify what stars each loop prints out, why not replace the first
System.out.print("*");with
System.out.print("#");Don't be afraid to play around with code, or to use some common sense.

  • Need Explaination of simple matrix code?!?!?! Thx

    Can someone plz explain this simple code to me!?!? im a noob.
    I know that this code cycles through all the rows & columns of the given
    matrix, but i get completely lost at this part:
    s[row][col] = m[row + theRow][col + theCol] ;
    Regards,
    Slvr99
    this code takes a matrix of integers M, and a
    row and column index, and returns a new matrix that is the lower
    right sub-matrix of M formed from that position. The header
    of the method is as follows:
    public static int[][] submatrix( int[][] m, int theRow, int theCol )
    int[][] s; // RESULT: the submatrix of matrix m
    int sRows; // INTERMEDIATE : number of rows in s
    int sCols; // INTERMEDIATE : number of columns in s
    int row; // INTERMEDIATE: index for row position in s
    int col; // INTERMEDIATE: index for column position in s
    sRows = m.length - theRow;
    sCols = m[0].length - theCol;
    s = new int[sRows][sCols];
    for ( row = 0; row < sRows; row = row + 1 )
    for ( col = 0; col < sCols; col = col + 1 )
    s[row][col] = m[row + theRow][col + theCol] ;
    return s;
    }

    It copies all the values as if [theRow, theCol] were one corner of the origin of matrix.
    I suggest you try running this in a debugger and then you can see what it does line by line.

  • Beginner needs help with simple code.

    I just statrted learnind java, and I need some help with this simple program. For some reason everytime I enter my Farenheit value, the Celsius conversion returns as 0.0. Would really appreciate the help. Thanks.
    Here's the code:
    public class TempConverter
    public static void main(String[] args)
    double F = Double.parseDouble(args[0]);
    System.out.println("Temperature in Farenheit is: " + F);
    double C = 5 / 9;
    C *= (F - 32);
    System.out.println("Temperature in Celsius is: " + C);
    }

    double C = 5 / 9This considers "5" and "9" to be integers and does an integer division, discarding the remainder. The result of that division is 0. Trydouble C = 5.0/9.0;

  • Need Help With Simple ABAP Code

    Hello,
    I'm loading data from a DSO (ZDTBMAJ) to an Infocube (ZCBRAD06). I need help with ABAP code to some of the logic in Start Routine. DSO has 2 fields: ZOCTDLINX & ZOCBRDMAJ.
    1. Need to populate ZOCPRODCD & ZOCREFNUM fields in Infocube:
        Logic:-
        Lookup /BI0/PMATERIAL, if /BIC/ZOCBRDMAJ = /BIC/OIZOCBRDMAJ
        then /BIC/ZOCPRODCD = ZOCPRODCD in Infocube
               /BIC/ZOCREFNUM = ZOCREFNUM in Infocube
    2. Need to populate 0G_CWWTER field in Infocube:
        Logic:
        Lookup /BIC/PZOCTDLINX, if /BIC/ZOCTDLINX = BIC/OIZOCTDLINX
        then G_CWWTER = 0G_CWWTER in Infocube.
    I would need to read single row at a time.
    Thanks!

    I resolved it.

  • I am trying to create a button in flash that will display 4 separate images at the same time when clicked.  I can't get the images to stay on when I take the mouse of the button.  I need the actions script code to make this happen.

    I am trying to create a button in flash that will allow the user to click on the button and 4 separate images show up at the same time.  I can get the images to appear when I click the button but they will not stay on the screen.  I need to know what code I use to make the images stay once the button is clicked, then I need to know exactly where I place that code.  It does not appear to be possible to add the action code to the buttons layer since each time I add a new layer I just get another "up" "over" "down" and "hit" line.
    Thank you in advance
    AP

    It is not clear how you are trying to realize this from your description.  If you are trying to create this within a button symbol it will not work.  Explain your approach and if there is code involved, show what you have so far.

    Everything I have read is confusing....can anyone explain in simple terms how I sert the iCloud up?  I run a Macbook, a Windows 7 PC and an iphone, and I need them all to syns together.
    Any help appreciated.
    CliffWragg

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    You can drag all your contacts (all at once) and each calendar from address book and iCal to your desktop as a back up/copy. Once you have set up iCloud using the ID for your apps, books and tunes etc, you can add the contacts and calendars to the new account by clicking on the desktop files, iCloud will sync them to your other devices.

    msg.innerHTML = msgNodes[0].firstChild.nodeValue + "<br />" + msgNodes[1].firstChild.nodeValue + '
    ' + msgNodes[2].firstChild.nodeValue;
    msgDiv.innerHTML = '';
    msgDiv.appendChild(msg);
    </script>
    <style>
    #message{color:red;}
    message{display:block;color:green;}
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    <form>
    <input type="button" onclick="getData()" value="Get Message"/>
    <div id="message">Message Goes Here</div>
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>
    }

    That looks like Javascript to me. This forum is about Java and XML, not Javascript and XML. However the error is pretty obvious:
    var msgNodes = doc.documentElement.getElementsByTagName('message');You don't have any elements named "message" in that XML document. You have an element named "message1" and an element named "message2" and an element named "message3", but no "message" elements. So you get a list of zero elements there. You need to rewrite your DOM-handling code to reflect the actual input.

  • JMS Simple code in Sun tutorial

    I run a simple code (http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/tutorial/doc/JMS4.html) fine in j2sdkee , but fail to use in Openjms/ JBoss.
    try {
    connectionFactory = (ConnectionFactory) jndiContext.lookup("QueueConnectionFactory");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("JNDI API lookup failed: " + e.toString());
    return;
    What's wrong of the above code? Why do I can the following error in Openjms / Jboss?
    JNDI API lookup failed: javax.naming.CommunicationException: Can't find

    OpenJMS by default defines the following: (QueueConnectionFactory is not defined by default!)
    queueName = "queue1"
    queueConnectionFactoryName = "JmsQueueConnectionFactory"
    The creation of the initial context could be done like this
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable ();
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL,
    "rmi://localhost:1099/JndiServer");
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,
    "org.exolab.jms.jndi.rmi.RmiJndiInitialContextFactory");
    jndiContext = new InitialContext (env);
    Similar modifications are needed for JBoss

  • Need help on simple cursor

    Hi All,
    I am trying to list name of columns based on input table names
    Not sure why below simple code is not working
    Can you please suggest what is wrong?
    SQL>declare
      2  v_list varchar2(200);
      3  cursor c1 (i_table_name varchar2) is
      4  select * from all_tab_columns where
      5  owner='SCOTT' and table_name in i_table_name;
      6  begin
      7  v_list := '(''DEPT'')';
      8  dbms_output.put_line(v_list);
      9  FOR rec in c1(v_list)
    10  loop
    11  dbms_output.put_line(rec.column_name);
    12  end loop;
    13  end;
    14  /
    ('DEPT')
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

    There is a fundamental concept you are missing.
    You define a STRING variable:
    v_list varchar2(200);
    It is NOT a list. It is a single value string variable.
    Then you attempt to use a literal string value as a list:
    select * from all_tab_columns where  owner='SCOTT' and table_name in i_table_name;
    Putting 5 words in to a string does not make it a list:
    v_list varchar2(200) := 'word1,word2,word3,word4,word5';
    A list needs to be defined as an ARRAY type:
    type TStringArray is table of varchar2(30);
    stringList TStringArray;
    An array consists of cells or items. Which means a list of 5 items will be an array of 5 items:
    stringList := new TStringArray( 'word1','word2','word3','word4','word5');
    This is a basic data structure concept in programming. And you need to understand it fully BEFORE writing a single code statement. It is that critical to understand. Programming is all about manipulating data structures. Not commands and statements.

  • Need Help with Simple Chat Program

    Hello Guys,
    I'm fairly new to Java and I have a quick question regarding a simple chat program in java. My problem is that I have a simple chat program that runs from its own JFrame etc. Most of you are probably familiar with the code below, i got it from one of my java books. In any case, what I'm attempting to do is integrate this chat pane into a gui that i have created. I attempted to call an instace of the Client class from my gui program so that I can use the textfield and textarea contained in my app, but it will not allow me to do it. Would I need to integrate this code into the code for my Gui class. I have a simple program that contains chat and a game. The code for the Client is listed below.
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Client
    extends JPanel {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
    String name = args[0];
    String host = args[1];
    int port = Integer.parseInt(args[2]);
    final Socket s = new Socket(host, port);
    final Client c = new Client(name, s);
    JFrame f = new JFrame("Client : " + name);
    f.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
    public void windowClosing(WindowEvent we) {
    c.shutDown();
    System.exit(0);
    f.setSize(300, 300);
    f.setLocation(100, 100);
    f.setContentPane(c);
    f.setVisible(true);
    private String mName;
    private JTextArea mOutputArea;
    private JTextField mInputField;
    private PrintWriter mOut;
    public Client(final String name, Socket s)
    throws IOException {
    mName = name;
    createUI();
    wireNetwork(s);
    wireEvents();
    public void shutDown() {
    mOut.println("");
    mOut.close();
    protected void createUI() {
    setLayout(new BorderLayout());
    mOutputArea = new JTextArea();
    mOutputArea.setLineWrap(true);
    mOutputArea.setEditable(false);
    add(new JScrollPane(mOutputArea), BorderLayout.CENTER);
    mInputField = new JTextField(20);
    JPanel controls = new JPanel();
    controls.add(mInputField);
    add(controls, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
    mInputField.requestFocus();
    protected void wireNetwork(Socket s) throws IOException {
    mOut = new PrintWriter(s.getOutputStream(), true);
    final String eol = System.getProperty("line.separator");
    new Listener(s.getInputStream()) {
    public void processLine(String line) {
    mOutputArea.append(line + eol);
    mOutputArea.setCaretPosition(
    mOutputArea.getDocument().getLength());
    protected void wireEvents() {
    mInputField.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) {
    String line = mInputField.getText();
    if (line.length() == 0) return;
    mOut.println(mName + " : " + line);
    mInputField.setText("");

    Thanks for ur help!i have moved BufferedReader outside the loop. I dont think i am getting exception as i can c the output once.What i am trying to do is repeat the process which i m getting once.What my method does is first one sends the packet to multicasting group (UDP) and other method receives the packets and prints.
