Need Function to return CHAR(2) datatype -

I've created the following function. It needs to return a CHAR(2) datatype, but this code always returns VARCHAR2(4000). If I change it to numeric, I do get a number.
Is there some obvious reason why I am not able to return a 2-byte character value
from this code (I have tried substring and cast, but have not been able to transform
the result.)?
CREATE OR REPLACE function bal_fy_mon_seq (sysdate IN date)
RETURN CHAR
IS
bal_fy_mon_seq CHAR(2);
BEGIN
SELECT
DECODE
(TO_CHAR(SYSDATE,'MM'),'01','11',
'02','12',
'03','01',
'04','02',
'05','03',
'06','04',
'07','05',
'08','06',
'09','07',
'10','08',
'11','09',
'10' )
     INTO bal_fy_mon_seq
from dual;
RETURN (bal_fy_mon_seq);
END;
/

That works nicely as documentation, but it does not actually restrict the length of the return value from the function:
SQL> CREATE PACKAGE my_pkg AS
  2     SUBTYPE char_2 IS CHAR(2);
  3  END;
  4  /
Package created.
SQL> CREATE FUNCTION my_funct
  2     RETURN my_pkg.char_2 is
  3  BEGIN
  4     RETURN 'aaaa';
  5  END;
  6  /
Function created.
SQL> SELECT LENGTH(my_funct) FROM dual;
LENGTH(MY_FUNCT)
               4The only way to enforce a length limit on the return value of a function is to check in the function itself. Alternatively, if you declare the variable that receives the return value correctly (i.e. as whatever you want the return limited to), you will get an error if the length is not correct:
SQL> DECLARE
  2     l_v CHAR(2);
  3  BEGIN
  4     l_v := my_funct;
  5  END;
  6  /
DECLARE
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
ORA-06512: at line 4Now, just trap the error and take whatever action seems appropriate.

  • How to Make FUNCTION to return multiple column and multiple row output

    Hi All,
    Kindly Share ur Idea;Thanks in Advance;
    i Have Table Demo.
    table DEMO:
    id name
    1 a10
    1 a11
    1 a12
    2 b10
    2 b11
    3 ccc
    and the function is like:
    create or replace function (p1 number) return varchar2 as
    vid number;
    vname varchar2(20);
    begin
    select id,name into vid,vname from demo where id=p1;
    return v1;
    end;
    this function returns output for id=3;
    BUT,
    i need output as (for input as 1)
    vid vname
    1 a10
    1 a11
    1 a12

    A function returns a single datatype.
    That datatype may be an atomic datatype (varchar2, number etc.) or it may be an object/record datatype, or even a collection datatype.
    Where are you going to use this function? In PL/SQL or SQL?
    If you are wanting to use it in SQL, then you would need a pipelined function e.g.
    SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE myemp AS OBJECT
      2  ( empno    number,
      3    ename    varchar2(10),
      4    job      varchar2(10),

      6    hiredate date,
      7    sal      number,
      8    comm     number,
      9    deptno   number
    10  )
    11  /
    Type created.
    SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE myrectable AS TABLE OF myemp
      2  /
    Type created.
    SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION pipedata(p_min_row number, p_max_row number) RETURN myrectable PIPELINED IS

      5              from (
      6                    select e.*
      7                          ,rownum rn
      8                    from (select * from emp order by empno) e
      9                   )
    10              where rn between p_min_row and p_max_row)
    11    LOOP
    12      v_obj.empno    := e.empno;
    13      v_obj.ename    := e.ename;
    14      v_obj.job      := e.job;
    15      v_obj.mgr      := e.mgr;
    16      v_obj.hiredate := e.hiredate;
    17      v_obj.sal      := e.sal;
    18      v_obj.comm     := e.comm;
    19      v_obj.deptno   := e.deptno;
    20      PIPE ROW (v_obj);
    21    END LOOP;

  • Migrating Functions that return TABLE from SQL Server to Oracle

    I have some functions in SQL Server that return a TABLE datatype. When these functions are moved to Oracle 9i using Migration Workbench, they give compilation errors. In the migrated function it says that the DDL stmt is passed to the ddl file, but the table is not created. I checked the ddl stmt for temporary tables and it is wrong. Its a create table stmt with no size for varchars and we can't even edit these stmts in the workbench.
    Also the migrated function has the table name for return type, which doesn't works in Oracle. Oracle needs a datatype to be returned from Oracle.
    How do we return a table from a function?

    Yes.
    If you do not enclose the object names (table/view/index etc) in double-quotes, they are stored in uppercase format in the data dictionary.
    If you enclose them in quotes, they are stored in the same case ans you entered. As such, while accessing such objects, you need to tell Oracle not to convert the names to uppercase, hence the requirement to supply the names in quotes.

  • Accessing function's return value

    Hi there. I have created several pl/sql procedures and functions that I can run as standalone programs and I have no problem integrating them into my java code also. However I cannot access the return value of any created function from my java code. The functions appear to execute correctly because when I deliberately enter an invalid select statement I get the errors I expect to get for that instance nad if I enter a valid select statement in the function the program executes correctly but I still cannot access the function's return value. My java code where I execute the pl/sql function is as follows:
    CallableStatement p = cont.conn.prepareCall("{call ? := Hellen.FUNC}");
    p.setString(1, "z006"); //hellen.FUNC = function name
    p.execute();
    How do I access the return value of my function?
    Do I need to get a ResultSet?
    My function is as follows:
    function func
    return varchar
    is tester varchar(4);
    BEGIN
    select cfcc_code into tester from hellen.test1 where test1.cfcc_code = 'A21';
    return tester;
    END;
    Any help will be gratefully received, Joe

    You need to do something like
    p.registerOutParameter(1, java.lang.String);
    p.execute();
    String result = p.getString(1);Cheers, APC

  • PL/SQL function body returning SQL query - ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error

    I'm attempting to dynamically generate a rather large SQL query via the "PL/SQL function body returning SQL query" report region option.  The SQL query generated will possibly be over 32K.  When I execute my page, I sometimes receive the "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error" which points to a larger than 32K query that was generated.  I've seen other posts in the forum related to this dynamic SQL size limitation issue, but they are older (pre-2010) and point to the 32K limit of the DNS (EXECUTE IMMEDIATE) and DBMS_SQL.  I found this post (dynamic sql enhancements in 11g) which discusses 11g no longer having the 32K size limitation for generating dynamic SQL.  Our environment is on 11gR2 and using ApEx 4.2.1.  I do not know which dynamic SQL method -- DNS or DBMS_SQL -- ApEx 4.2.1 is using.  Can someone clarify for me which dynamic SQL method ApEx uses to implement the "PL/SQL function body returning SQL query" option?
    As a test, I created a page on apex.oracle.com with a report region with the following source:
    declare
      l_stub varchar2(25) := 'select * from sys.dual ';
      l_sql  clob := l_stub || 'union all ';
      br     number(3) := 33;
    begin
      while length ( l_sql ) < 34000 loop
        l_sql := l_sql || l_stub || 'union all ';
      end loop;
      l_sql := l_sql || l_stub;
      for i in 1 .. ceil ( length ( l_sql ) / br ) loop
        dbms_output.put_line ( dbms_lob.substr ( l_sql, br, ( ( i - 1 ) * br ) + 1 ) );
      end loop;
      return l_sql;
    end;
    The dbms_output section is there to be able to run this code in SQL*Plus and confirm the size of the SQL is indeed larger than 32K.  When running this in SQL*Plus, the procedure is successful and produces a proper SQL statement which can be executed.  When I put this into the report region on apex.oracle.com, I get the ORA-06502 error.
    I can certainly implement a work-around for my issue by creating a 'Before Header' process on the page which populates an ApEx collection with the data I am returning and then the report can simply select from the collection, but according to documentation, the above 32K limitation should be resolved in 11g.  Thoughts?
    Shane.

    What setting do you use in your report properties - especially in Type and in Region Source?
    If you have Type="SQL Query", then you should have a SELECT statement in the Region Source. Something like: SELECT .... FROM ... WHERE
    According to the ERR-1101 error message, you have probably set Type to "SQL Query (PL/SQL function body returning SQL query)". In this situation APEX expects you to write a body of a PL/SQL function, that will generate the text of a SQL query that APEX should run. So it can be something like:
    declare
    mycond varchar2(4000);
    begin
    if :P1_REPORT_SEARCH is not null THEN
    mycond:='WHERE LAST_NAME like :P1_REPORT_SEARCH ||''%''';
    end if;
    return 'select EMPLOYEE_ID, FIRST_NAME, LAST_NAME from EMPLOYEES ' ||mycond;
    end;
    And for escaping - are you interested in escaping the LIKE wildcards, or the quotes?
    For escaping the wildcards in LIKE function so that when the user enters % you will find a record with % and not all functions, look into the SQL Reference:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/conditions007.htm
    (You would than need to change the code of your function accordingly).
    If you are interested in escaping the quotes, try to avoid concatenating the values entered by the user into the SQL. If you can, use bind variables instead - as I have in my example above. If you start concatenating the values into the text of SQL, you are open to SQLInjection - user can enter anything, even things that will break your SQL. If you really need to allow users to choose the operator, I would probably give them a separate combo for operators and a textfield for values, than you could check if the operator is one of the allowed ones and create the condition accordingly - and than still use bind variable for inserting the filtering value into the query.

  • Authorization check on Function module return values

    Hi,
    I have a tricky situation. In our BW implementation, many of the FI infoobjects are authorization relevent. One of the objects is 0COSTCENTER.  A user has been assigned with authorization profile, in which the user is authorised for COST CENTER = A* and #.  All planning templates were working nice.
    We were on SP 12 earlier, now we upgraded to SP 20. Now came a issue, the user gets error that user is not authroised for the data. After our analysis, we found nothing wrong as such, so contacted SAP. They came back with a root cause
    In my planning function, an ABAP function module is used. The function module returns a COSTCENTER value. This return value is then assigned to a variable, this variable is of type 0COSTCENTER.
    SAP said there was a bug in their own design. The bug was, if the cost center value is directly used in planning function for other calculations, it will throw an authorization error.  But, if the COST CENTEr value is given to a variable and that variable is used for other calculations,  it works fine. Thats why it worked for us earlier.
    Now, they have removed that bug, so variables are also checked against authorizations and they said we need to either change the code or give * for the COST CENTER authorization.
    So we have a problem. It is not straight forward to give * for COSTCENTER in FI BW implementation. SAP theory is that they cannot say which value the functional module will return. So they will check against ALL the values for COSTCENTER but not the authorised values.
    Has anyone seen this issue before? is it only specific to planning function or its just ABAP concept? Any suggesations to come out this problem?

    Bindu, thanks,
    The error is coming at the program compile level itself i.e. before executing the planning group itself. As per the F1 help on forumla editor and from their support, the system reads all the reference data,  So when it sees the function module and its export parameter, it captures all the data for COST CENTER as reference data.
    Thus even I am sure that the return value will be always authorized, the reference data is checked for the full authorization. Thus its failing

  • SOLVED: How can I use or call a function that returns %ROWTYPE?

    Hi
    edit: you can probably skip all this guff and go straight to the bottom...In the end this is probably just a question of how to use a function that returns a %rowtype.  Thanks.
    Currently reading Feuerstein's tome, 5th ed. I've downloaded and run the file genaa.sp, which is a code generator. Specifically, you feed it a table name and it generates code (package header and package body) that will create a cache of the specified table's contents.
    So, I ran:
    HR@XE> @"C:\Documents and Settings\Jason\My Documents\Work\SQL\OPP5.WEB.CODE\OPP5.WEB.CODE\genaa.sp"
    749  /
    Procedure created.
    HR@XE> exec genaa('EMPLOYEES');which generated a nice bunch of code, viz:
    create or replace package EMPLOYEES_cache is
        function onerow ( EMPLOYEE_ID_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMPLOYEE_ID%TYPE) return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE;
        function onerow_by_EMP_EMAIL_UK (EMAIL_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMAIL%TYPE) return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE;
        procedure test;
    end EMPLOYEES_cache;
    create or replace package body EMPLOYEES_cache is
        TYPE EMPLOYEES_aat IS TABLE OF HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE INDEX BY PLS_INTEGER;
        EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa EMPLOYEES_aat;
        TYPE EMP_EMAIL_UK_aat IS TABLE OF HR.EMPLOYEES.EMPLOYEE_ID%TYPE INDEX BY HR.EMPLOYEES.EMAIL%TYPE;
        EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa EMP_EMAIL_UK_aat;
        function onerow ( EMPLOYEE_ID_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMPLOYEE_ID%TYPE)
            return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE is
            begin
                return EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa (EMPLOYEE_ID_in);
            end;
        function onerow_by_EMP_EMAIL_UK (EMAIL_in IN HR.EMPLOYEES.EMAIL%TYPE)
            return HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE is
            begin
                return EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa (EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa (EMAIL_in));
            end;
        procedure load_arrays is
            begin
                FOR rec IN (SELECT * FROM HR.EMPLOYEES)
                LOOP
                    EMP_EMP_ID_PK_aa(rec.EMPLOYEE_ID) := rec;
                    EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa(rec.EMAIL) := rec.EMPLOYEE_ID;
                end loop;
            END load_arrays;
        procedure test is
            pky_rec HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE;
            EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa_rec HR.EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE;
            begin
                for rec in (select * from HR.EMPLOYEES) loop
                    pky_rec := onerow (rec.EMPLOYEE_ID);
                    EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa_rec := onerow_by_EMP_EMAIL_UK (rec.EMAIL);
                    if rec.EMPLOYEE_ID = EMP_EMAIL_UK_aa_rec.EMPLOYEE_ID then
                        dbms_output.put_line ('EMP_EMAIL_UK  lookup OK');
                    else
                        dbms_output.put_line ('EMP_EMAIL_UK  lookup NOT OK');
                    end if;
                end loop;
            end test;
        BEGIN
            load_arrays;
        end EMPLOYEES_cache;
    /which I have run successfully:
    HR@XE> @"C:\Documents and Settings\Jason\My Documents\Work\SQL\EMPLOYEES_CACHE.sql"
    Package created.
    Package body created.I am now trying to use the functionality within the package.
    I have figured out that the section
        BEGIN
            load_arrays;
        end EMPLOYEES_cache;
    /is the initialization section, and my understanding is that this is supposed to run when any of the package variables or functions are referenced. Is that correct?
    With that in mind, I'm trying to call the onerow() function, but it's not working:
    HR@XE> select onerow(100) from dual;
    select onerow(100) from dual
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00904: "ONEROW": invalid identifier

    HR@XE> select table(employees_cache.onerow(100)) from dual;

    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00936: missing expressionHe provides the code genaa.sp, and a very brief description of what it does, but doesn't tell us how to run the generated code!
    Now, I have just done some googling, and it seems that what I am trying to do isn't possible. Apparently %ROWTYPE is PL/SQL, and not understood by SQL, so you can't call onerow() from sql. Correct?
    So I try wrapping the call in an exec:
    HR@XE> exec select employees_cache.onerow(100) from dual;
    BEGIN select employees_cache.onerow(100) from dual; END;
    ERROR at line 1:

    HR@XE> exec select table(employees_cache.onerow(100)) from dual;
    BEGIN select table(employees_cache.onerow(100)) from dual; END;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 14:

    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:

    HR@XE> exec employees_cache.onerow(100)
    BEGIN employees_cache.onerow(100); END;
    ERROR at line 1:

    PLS-00221: 'ONEROW' is not a procedure or is undefined
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignoredNo joy.
    Of course, now that I'm looking at it again, it seems that the way to go is indicated by the first error:
    PLS-00428: an INTO clause is expected in this SELECT statement
    So am I supposed to create a type of EMPLOYEES%ROWTYPE in a PL/SQL procedure, and the idea of this code, is that the first call to onerow() runs the initialiation code, which populates the cache, and all subsequent calls to onerow() (whether by my session or any other) will use the cache?
    I've had a stab at this, but still, no joy:
    create or replace procedure testcache is
        emp employees%rowtype;
        begin
            select employees_cache.onerow(100) from dual into emp;
            dbms_output.put_line('Emp id: ' || emp.employee_id);
        end testcache;
    show errors
    HR@XE> @testcache.sql

    4/9      PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored

    HR@XE>Have a feeling this should be really easy. Can anybody help?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Ha, figured it out

    Hopefully you also figured out that the example is just that: a technical example of how to use certain Oracle functionality. Unfortunately it is also an example of what you should NOT do in an actual application.
    That code isn't scaleable, uses expensive PGA memory, has no limit on the amount of memory that might be used and, contrary to your belief will result in EVERY SESSION HAVING ITS OWN CACHE of exactly the same data if the session even touches that package.
    Mr. Feuerstein is an expert in SQL and PL/SQL and his books cover virtually all of the functionality available. He also does an excellent job of providing examples to illustrate how that functionality can be combined and used. But the bulk of those examples are intended solely to illustrate the 'technical' aspects of the technology. They do not necessarily reflect best practices and they often do not address performance or other issues that need to be considered when actually using those techniques in a particular application. The examples show WHAT can be done but not necessarily WHEN or even IF a given technique should be used.
    It is up to the reader to learn the advantages and disadvantages of each technicalogical piece and determine when and how to use them.

    That is correct. To be used by SQL you would need to create SQL types using the CREATE TYPE syntax. Currently that syntax does not support anything similar to %ROWTYPE.

    >
    NO! That is a common misconception. Each session has its own set of package variables. Any session that touches that package will cause the entire EMPLOYEES table to be queried and stored in a new associative array specifically for that session.
    That duplicates the cache for each session using the package. So while there might be some marginal benefit for a single session to cache data like that the benefit usually disappears if multiple sessions are involved.
    The main use case that I am aware of where such caching has benefit is during ETL processing of staged data when the processing of each record is too complex to be done in SQL and the records need to be BULK loaded and the data manipulated in a loop. Then using an associative array as a lookup table to quickly get a small amount of data can be effective. And if the ETL procedure is being processed in parallel (meaning different sessions) then for a small lookup array the additional memory use is tolerable.
    Mitigating against that is the fact that:
    1. Such frequently used data that you might store in the array is likely to be cached by Oracle in the buffer cache anyway
    2. Newer versions of Oracle now have more than one cache
    3. The SQL query needed to get the data from the table will use a bind variable that eliminates repeated hard parsing.
    4. The cursor and the buffer caches ARE SHARED by multiple sessions globally.
    So the short story is that there would rarely be a use case where ARRAYs like that would be preferred over accessing the data from the table.

  • Query on Reoprts-pl/sql function body returning sql query

    Hi,
    I am facing a starnge problem.. and would like to know the reason for it.
    The situation is as follows:
    I have a report (pl/sql function body returning sql query based). My query is as follows:
    declare
    l_query1 varchar2(2000);
    begin
    if (:P102_min_value is not null and :P102_max_value is null) then
    l_query1 := 'select decode(:P102_date,'1',date1) Transaction_Date, decode(:P102_first_name,'2',first_name) First_Name from (
    select * from MORTGAGE_LOAN_LEADS where APPRX_LOAN_AMOUNT >=:P102_min_value
    return (l_query1);
    end if;
    end;
    This returns the error as :
    1 error has occurred
    Function returning SQL query: Query cannot be parsed within the Builder. If you believe your query is syntactically correct, check the generic columns checkbox below the region source to proceed without parsing.
    (ORA-06550: line 7, column 20: PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "1" when expecting one of the following: * & = - + ; < / > at in is mod remainder not rem <> or != or ~= >= <= <> and or like LIKE2_ LIKE4_ LIKEC_ between || multiset member SUBMULTISET_)
    How do i correct this? am i right in thinking that the single quotes indicating a string within a select query is creating the problem? Beacuse if i use an sql query report and use the following query, it is working fine...
    select
    decode(:P102_date,'1',date1) Transaction_Date,
    decode(:P102_first_name,'2',first_name) First_Name
    from (
    select * from MORTGAGE_LOAN_LEADS where APPRX_LOAN_AMOUNT >=:P102_min_value
    But i need to write pl/sql function, so that multiple report can be returned based on different conditions. Please guide me.
    Thanks,
    Sumana

    Does that mean that both in if and else we need to have same columns selected?
    if thats the case.. any idea how i can implement it in my code. The situation here is that the columns that need to be selected are dynamic and keep on changing...
    if i try to implement like this and run the page, it gives the following error:
    Query is:

    select * from MORTGAGE_LOAN_LEADS where APPRX_LOAN_AMOUNT >=' || :P102_max_value ||'
    else
    l_query1 := 'select date1,first_name from MORTGAGE_LOAN_LEADS where rownum = 1';
    end if;
    else
    l_query1 := 'select date1,first_name from MORTGAGE_LOAN_LEADS where rownum = 1';
    end if;
    return l_query1;
    --dbms_output.put_line( l_query1);
    end;
    The Error is:
    failed to parse SQL query:

    If i try to run the same in command prompt, it always goes to the else part... (else of outer if)

  • SQL Query (PL/SQL function body returning SQL query) when using to_char

    we are trying to build a report page of Type SQL Query (PL/SQL function body returning SQL query).
    our query is so simple, we need to extract the month from the recording_date column.
    declare
    l_query varchar2(1000);
    begin
    l_query:='select to_char(recording_date,'MM')from re_productive';
    return l_query;
    end;
    but we are having the following problem for this query
    Function returning SQL query: Query cannot be parsed within the Builder. If you believe your query is syntactically correct, check the generic columns checkbox below the region source to proceed without parsing.
    (ORA-06550: line 4, column 42: PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "MON" when expecting one of the following: . ( * @ % & = - + ; < / > at in is mod remainder not rem <> or != or ~= >= <= <> and or like between || multiset member SUBMULTISET_ The symbol ". was inserted before "MON" to continue.)
    Notes:
    1-the query is correct and it was tested under Toad and SQL Plus.
    2- we tried Use Generic Column Names (parse query at runtime only) option but we get the same problem.
    any quick help please.

    Hi
    You haven't escaped your quotes in the string. Try this...
    DECLARE
    l_query VARCHAR2(32767);
    BEGIN
    l_query:= 'select to_char(recording_date,''MM'') from re_productive';
    RETURN l_query;
    END;Cheers

  • Function not returning database rows properly in non-database item

    Hi,
    I have 3 database items that I'd like to concatenate into one field and display it in a non-database item. I have setup two different methods to do this for testing purposes. First, I created three separate database items (SECTION, ROW, & SEAT_NUM) and a non-database item (SEAT). I created a formula (in SEAT) to do the concatenation and this way works fine. For my second method, I created a function where I selected the 3 fields and performed a concatenation into a single value to be returned in a seperate non-database item (SEAT_TEST).
    Here's my function:
    FUNCTION SeatLocation(p_id IN event.id%TYPE)
    RETURN VARCHAR2 IS
    CURSOR a IS
    (SELECT ltrim(rtrim(event.section,' '),' ')||' '||
    ltrim(rtrim(event.row,' '),' ')||' '||
    ltrim(rtrim(event.seat_num,' '),' ') seat
    FROM event
    WHERE event.id = p_id);
    BEGIN
    FOR rec IN a LOOP
    IF rec.seat IS NOT NULL THEN
    RETURN rec.seat;
    ELSE
    RETURN ' ';
    END IF;
    END LOOP;
    END SeatLocation;
    And I'm calling it in a POST_QUERY trigger with the following: :event.seat_test := SeatLocation(:event.id);
    I put both non-database items side-by-side, run the form, and the first method works fine. I doesn't quite work for the function to display in SEAT_TEST. For my program, an ID can have multiple seat locations and I'd like to display all those seats as I scroll through the form (for a given ID). What the function is returning is only the first records seat location even though there are two more locations (from the remaining two records) that need to be displayed, but are not. It works fine for the formula method. Is there a work around this within my function code and/or the SEAT_TEST item? I'd like to keep my function instead because I could use the code elsewhere. I thought that since there is more than one record retrieved for a particular ID, the for loop would return one value each loop iteration and display the different value seat locations as I scroll/arrow down through the form. I didn't know if you had to call the POST-QUERY trigger multiple times for the number or records you retrieve in the cursor. I hope this makes sense.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Eric

    Even though your function is written to loop through multiple records, as soon as it hits the first one inside the FOR loop, it returns that value. The Return command is an exit, so the function is done, and you cannot expect it to magically run a second time just because the cursor found more than one row.
    You need to pass the function all the parameters to form a unique key into the row you are looking up. ID is not unique.

  • Call ref cursor functions in function also returning ref cursor?

    In 10g database, I have several functions and procedures, some packaged, that return ref cursors. These work as expected.
    Is there a way to call one or more of these in a new function and return another ref cursor?
    I know this doesn't work, but I hope it conveys the idea.
    function f_get_order_lines
       return sys_refcursor -- or defined ref cursor
    is
      v_ords orders_rcr;
      v_lines lines_rcr;
      x sys_refcursor;
    begin
      v_ords := f_get_orders;
      for rec in v_ords
       loop
        v_lines := f_get_lines;
       ... do other work here...
      end loop;
    return x;
    end;

    Pipelined table functions might do the trick for you, depending you your requirements and the transformations you need to make:

  • Function that returns currently selected cell address or column

    Is there a function that returns the address (or just the column) of the currently selected cell? Simply put, something like =selectedcolumn.
    Background: I want to display help text in a cell, and I want that help text to change according to which cell (actually, which column) the user has selected. I have put the help texts in a hidden row. They take up too much space to be displayed all the time. I want one cell to contain the help text of the column of the currently selected cell.
    Trying to not use Filemaker for this project if possible
    Thanks for any help /Matt

    The Numbers method, using comments as Barry showed, is probably the best method.  An alternate method which is more complex would be to use an Applescript running in the background.  The Applescript can scan in the background for which cell/column is currently selected and write that cell/column address into a cell in your table. A formula in your table (most likely a lookup formula) can use that address to serve up the correct help text in a diffrerent cell in the table or in another table.
    Some problems with this methodare
    The script is not part of the document. It is a separate entity.
    The script must be started manually. It will not automatically start when the Numbers document is opened.
    If the Numbers document is to be used on other Macs, each would also need the script installed.

  • Using Package to produce pl/sql function body returning sql query Report

    I have existing code that we want to use in building reports in APEX. We are needing to modify it slightly to handle some new requirements, but would like to use them in reports based upon SQL query (pl/sql function body returning sql query) functionality.
    Any suggestions as how to call these in an APEX report region?
    Thank you,
    Tony Miller
    UTMB/EHN

    Hi Tony-
    I am also v new to Apex and you may have answered a question I was in search of. I, however, now have a couple more. First a bit of background-- Like in your situation, my college has a lot of existing code (400 +) that we need to get into Apex. The majority of this canned code contains one/both: 1) many lines, sometimes containing multiple select statements 2) imbedded create table & view statements (temp user owned). Up until reading your post, I was unable to figure out an easy way of getting this existing code into the product. Thanks. Now the questions, do you know how I would go about dealing with the create tables/views. I've read some posts on this forum which suggest temporary tables being unstable in this environment. Also, do you know if there's a size limitation when passing sql code via a function?
    As you may/may not be able to tell, I'm a bit lost right now... so any info you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Conditional display using Pl/SQL function body returning a boolean

    I am having issues with conditional display of a report.
    I have to select lists: p50_facility and p50_supervisor.
    I have entered the below pl/sql function body returning a boolean
    Begin
    if (:p50_facility is null or
    :p50_supervisor is null) THEN
    Return False;
    Else
    Return True;
    End if;
    End;
    No matter what values my items are set to (null, not null), the report shows.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
    The values for the lists will be null only until the first time the page is submitted. Thereafter, the value is likely to be '%null%'
    You will need to do something like:
    BEGIN
    IF (:P50_FACILITY IS NULL OR :P50_FACILITY = '%' || 'null%' OR :P50_SUPERVISOR IS NULL OR :P50_SUPERVISOR = '%' || 'null%') THEN
      RETURN FALSE;
    ELSE
      RETURN TRUE;
    END IF;
    END;Andy

  • Analyze: PL/SQL function body returning an SQL query

    I need to obtain the final SQL returned by the PL/SQL function.
    I will be using this final SQL in a procedure.
    Please provide some advise on how to obtain the SQL. I have already looked in the DBMS_SQL package but I am not sure if that is the right place to look into.
    Regards,
    Sumit

    I am trying to modify the export_to_excel package from Denes kubicek to provide me an excel from PL/SQL function body returning an SQL query.
    Here is the simplified PLSQL code in the region source.
    declare
    l2 varchar2(2000) null;
    begin
    l2:= 'Select NAME,ORIGINATED,OWNER,ORIGINATOR,';
    l2:= l2 || 'DESIGNATED_UNIT,SOURCE,';
    l2:= l2 || 'REFERENCE';
    l2:= l2 || ' from MV_DETAILED_DATA';
    return l2;
    end;
    I would like to get the SQL returned from this PLSQL and use it in a procedure to get the Excel.
    As you mentioned earlier "copy the generated query string into an application item". [ +In the PL/SQL function body returning an SQL query, copy the generated query string into an application item. The app item value can then be passed as a parameter value to the procedure+ ]
    I do not know how to dynamically excute this PLSQL in the region source and obtain the returned value in my procedure.
    Best Regard,
    Sumit.
