Need help with refurb. Macbook Pro purchase.

I'm looking at buying a refurbished Macbook Pro.  What's the diff between a 2.2g quadcore and a 2.0g quadcore?  Or what's faster, a quad 2.0 with 8 gigs ram or a quad 2.2 with 4 gigs?  I will be using it for writing and recording music.
Thanks in advance,
The Guy

You're looking at the 15", correct. Obviously, the 2.2 is faster, but a big difference between the two is the GPU, with the 2.2 having 1GB of video memory...big difference you will notice. Don't worry about RAM, as you can upgrade that yourself cheaper than Apple charges for RAM.

Hello, I need help with my macbook pro.
It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
    I am running Lion 10.7.3.
    Regards,
    Nicolas.
(I apologize if any grammatical/structural mistakes were to be found, english is not my mother-tongue. )

You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS.

  • Need help with 2008 macbook pro superdrive issue pleasee

    Color: Aluminum
    Factory: China

    4gb of ram
also apple care til jun 11
OK so I bought the computer for 650 from my friend and soon after buying found a problem. The problem was the optical drive not reading all the disc that I put in the system. So I took the macbook pro to apple they installed a new super drive. I get home today and try to install snow leopard and have a issue. The way I went about was starting up holding the option button and waiting to boot from the disc for a fresh install. First time I tried I got a symbol that look like the restricted sign you see when you cant smoke in a area ect... So I restart and try again this time I get to the install screen click does the estimation ect.. 34 minutes than goes to 28 minutes pretty much has frozen there now, and after waiting all this time about 20 minutes I get the spinning beach ball. Also forgot to say that the super drive is now super dooper annoying loud and make odd sounds too with vibration. So I guess make another apple gen bar apt? And have them possible replace the super drive again?
update just got an error occured while installing mac os x still have spinning beach ball

I'm guessing Apple didn't do a good job. I think you need to make a return trip. And politely remind them that you're making a return trip.

  • Need help with iTunes, macbook pro, and ipad

This is only about the 3rd time I've booted a mac. I have a macbook pro and I have 12 ipads. I want to access itunes on the macbook pro and download applications and then whatever I download I want to be installed on the ipads. I signed in to my itunes account on both the macbook pro and the ipads. I have downloaded an app from itunes, but I can't find it on the macbook pro or on the ipad. How can I tell if it's downloaded and installed on either unit? Thanks

Did the part numbers match up to 661-3997, 661-4326, and 661-4346 as the seller advised? It looks like a problem with the timing controller. It's odd that it sorta works during the boot screen. I think that screen may be 800 x 600 during boot up when only the Apple shows. Have you tried lowering the resolution to 800 x 600 on the notebook screen while it is running to see if you get any kind of image at all of the Mac desktop? Not that that would be a permanent solution, but it might be helpful in troubleshooting.
Have you had any further contact with the seller of the panel? I notice they have a high ebay rating. Maybe they will have more information for you. It seems like the panel is correctly installed but isn't compatible for some reason.

  • Need help with webcam, macbook pro

    Please help!
I need to set up a wireless webcam to monitor a litter of puppies while I am at work. Home computer is an iMac 24 inch, at work I can plug in my MacBook Pro, or use the office PC network. I need help in selecting a web cam (wireless, as pups are far from computer) and setting up so I can log on via an internet connection.
    Many thanks for your suggestions!

They aren't cheap, and use a browser to view the images. Most require a wireless network at the remote location too ...

  • I need help with my Macbook Pro... I can't boot it up because of a Kernal Panic.

Like the title says... I know there are some computer savy people especially with Macs on here so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Okay I will try my best to describe my problem...
I believe it was either Saturday or Sunday that the problem first happened.
I was watching a video on a site and I don't remember if I expanded to full screen, but the computer like froze up and a dark grey curtain fell over the screen that was somewhat translucent and this message popped up.
So since it's a 2008 MBP I have no restart button so I decide to hold down the power button until it shuts off and then turn it on again... same message appears... I do this like 3-5 more times and still the same thing.  So I decide to let it sit for a while, which turned into a day because I had to go to work, and while at work I started looking for solutions.
Came home and tried a solution that work... temporarily... I held the X button upon startup and it worked and I then ran start up disk like it said to on the troubleshooting I learned from Google.  Thought all was well... so I decide to venture back to said site that's just like flash players like youtube, but with more geared towards young adolescences.  Things were good for a little and then the problem started happening again and more frequent.
I kept doing the hold X thing and it work like 1-2 more times and now that Kernel Panic screen doesn't go away at all and I can't boot up the MBP at all.
I tried doing the thing where you hold X at start up... no luck!
I tried holding down shift at start up to boot into safe mode and it still doesn't work.
I tried some PRAM thing where you hold down cntrl + option + p + r and that didn't work.
I don't even know what operating system I'm on because the MBP won't boot up for me to see the system info.
Anyone ever had this problem or know how to fix it... I'm not covered under warranty anymore so before I take it into Apple and the use the KY on me I figured I ask on here to see if anyone can help me remedy this problem.
Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Help with connecting MacBook Pro with Cisco Routing and Switches?

I'm running a CiscoASA 5510 router with several Cisco WS-C2960-48TT-L switches on a local network to connect with MacBook Pro. I need to be able to restrict access to specific users via their computer MAC address. ie: Joe Blow is limited to connecting through Switch 1 on port 10 and anywhere else he tries to plug in will simply not work.

You need to look at the documentation that came with your router and switches. Or ask your network admin to set it up. Your question has nothing to do with your Macbook Pro configuration. MAC filtering is done in the router not in the computers/devices connecting to the router.

  • Need help migrating 2006 Macbook Pro to 2012 Macbook Pro

Hi -- The screen on my 2006 Macbook Pro (running 10.9.2) completely stopped working last weekend. It doesn't light up at all. I've tried everything under the sun to get it functioning again but I believe it is just totally dead. I tried plugging an external monitor, mouse and keyboard into it and cannot get it to show up on the screen, which is driving me crazy! The monitor works just fine with my 2011 Mac Mini (running 10.6.8). I have been able to access the hard drive via target disk mode using the Mini and copy all of the files onto an external drive, which brings me relief that not everything is lost. I tried to boot the drive in startup manager on the Mini to do a Time Machine backup and the Mini didn't even enter startup manager. It just completely ignored the fact that I was pressing the Alt key at startup and proceeded to login normally! I have tried it several times and no dice. I'm feeling frustrated! Argh! Am I doing something wrong? Am I crazy? Anyways...
I bought a refurbished 2012 Macbook Pro and I would like to transfer all of my applications from the 2006 using migration assistant but I've read that some of them might not transfer correctly, such as Adobe CS6 suite and Final Cut Pro X. Unfortunately, I don't have the disks for these applications. Am I totally out of luck or is there a way to do this that I haven't seen yet? I'm willing to try anything at this point. Another question I have is will a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter work with my 2006 MacBook Pro?
If you have any insights on how to transfer all of my stuff over, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you!

Yep, it was in target disk mode. I don't have a thunderbolt-firewire adapter, but I'm going to get one and try that -- I honestly wasn't sure if it would even work with my older Mac. I ran migration assistant with the Macbook Pro 2006 in target disk mode connected to the 2012 with an ethernet cable and it didn't find the drive.
So there's really no way for me to gather all of the various folders for FCP and put them on the new Mac?

  • Need Help Connecting New MacBook Pro with Wireless Network Password

    Hi Linksys Community,
I would like to ask for your help and advice.
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro, OS X, Version 10.8.3.
I need to setup a password to the wireless internet network (I've successfully done this)
    I have a Wireless G,  WRT54G Router.
When I setup the password, I'm not able to connect to the internet with my new MacBook Pro, which is running Mac OS X Version 10.8.3.  I get the message 'cannot connect to Internet, connection timeout) However, I'm able to connect to the internet with an older MacBook Pro, and my iPad. The password works fine with other models.
Would anyone be able to help me troubleshoot what is going on, or how I can solve this problem?
I would like to be able to have a password on my network, and use the internet with my new MacBook Pro.
I have read about manually adding in the MAC address of computers, and setting up a Wireless MAC fiter.
Does anyone think this would solve the problem?  if so, how can I find out the MAC address of my MacBook Pro?
Thanks in advance for you help and time!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
Yes, my computer connects when your network is open (no password set)?
    I used WPA Pre-Shared Key.
Do you know how I could check if my new MacBook Pro is compatible with this?
    Thanks!

  • I need urgent help with my macbook pro, installed a theme and now unable to open windows, please help !

    Hello,
I installed a theme on OS X Lion that was actually made for snow leapor, because on a youtube video someone said it works with Lion too,
After installing it I got problems seeing close and minize icons.
And After reinstalling my Macbook pro, I am unable to open finder, Safari, Terminal etc.
I have tried to get help from several help forums, and tried changing files as described here

    Theme was downloaded from here

Okay, it's both for your first question: When I import the songs to the library, the songs are not in the correct order as they were on the CD. And, in the process of my importing the songs, the library scrambles the songs in different sections of the library (I explain further below)
I don't know what you mean by "little triangle" pointing up or down. What's that got to do with the price of fish in China? lol
When I get the music in the library the songs come out sorted this way: 2 songs from CD 1 appear one section of the library, then 1 song from CD 2 appears in the next column, along with the album work. Then, I go down farther, and there's a few more of the songs from CD 1 in the next section. I go down again, and maybe 2 or 3 songs are in that column. Along with the artwork for that CD. Then I scroll down again in the library, and there's maybe 3 or 4 songs from CD 1 there. Get the picture? It keeps sorting the songs in that order. And yes, the CDs I was importing were compliation dance CDs, along with some from the same artist, like Barry Manilow.
I hope I answered the questions better so that you can help me Thanks in advance, Glenn

  • Help deciding a MacBook Pro purchase!

So, we'll start with my thoughts, and you guys can help fit my needs.
I'm really...really disapointed by the new retina macbook pro.  Cant 100% confirm it yet, I know, but if the RAM is indeed soldered on and the SSD's are semi proprietary, I will not buy one period.  Sorry to Apple, but it's just to cheap to purchase 3rd party RAM and replace HD's when newer applications require it.  Not to mention, if a RAM stick goes bad, am I replacing the entire board!?!
But here is what I want.  I have an Alienware m17x r1, that can still destory a lot of what I throw at it.  I really want something smaller, better battery life however.  I know I'm going to miss a 1920x1200 resolution, but I'm willing to give it up for lower wieght, size, battery, ect.  Not to mention, the mag-safe is the most brilliant design of a power supply!  So I'm assuming the 15 inch pro may be the option.  For you folks that use software like pro tools, adobe PS, ID, IA, ect...do you find the resolution to give you enough work space?  Are the 17" pros still light enough in weight for your owners?

You might still be able to get your hands on a new Sandy Bridge 17" MacBook Pro in stores.  Otherwise, the best screen res you can get online is 1680x1050.  I have the 2011 15" Pro with that screen, and it's fantastic.  I don't miss the extra real estate much compared to a 1920x1200.  I run photo, audio, and video editing tools in OSX and Win7 on mine all day with no complaints.
I assume you're gaming quite a bit since you're running an Alienware 17", so I'd recommend the 2.6GHz MBP that has the additional graphics memory.  Upgrade that screen to 1680x1050, then get your ram and disk upgrades elsewhere.

  • Help with unresponsive MacBook Pro

I got up this morning to turn on my MacBook Pro, and it was unresponsive, stuck at the gray screen with the spinning circle.  There's also a loading bar beneath the circle that disappears after a few seconds.  I already had a similar encounter about a year ago with the same computer, and took it into the Apple store where they eventually had to replace the hard drive.
It's a 15" MacBook Pro that I got about 3 years ago, currently running OS 10.6.  I don't have the OS disc with me but I do have a time machine backup on an external drive, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to boot from that.  I also have access to my girlfriend's MacBook Pro, which I'm posting from.  It's newer and came with 10.7 installed, which it is currently running.  I read online about being able to create a 10.7 boot disk by re-downloading the installer from the purchases section of the app store.  I was going to try this,  but since this MBP came with 10.7 already installed and was never purchased, I can;t find any way to access the 10.7 installer since they have removed 10.7 from the app store entirely it appears.  I would just go ahead and download 10.8 for the $20 on here and create a disk from that if I knew there was a good chance it could fix my problems.
I'm no expert, but following what others have posted about similar problems, I booted using CMD + Shift + V, and the last few lines contain things such as:
         Keys out of order (4,7898)
         Rebuilding catalog B-tree
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired
This is where I get lost and don't know what, if anything, can be done from here.  I was just hoping there was maybe something else I could try before taking it into the Apple store, as the nearest one is about 100 miles away.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have directory damage.  If you continue to use your computer you will have further damage which only the repair shop can repair.
You will need to get hold of your system discs that came with your computer and do the following -
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.
If repairing the disk does not work, you will need a stronger utility.  Here are a few -
DiskWarrior   Highly recommended for *directory damage* repairs.
    TechTool Pro   Multi-functional utility.
    Drive Genius Multi-functional utility.

  • Need help about refurbished MacBook Pro 15" 2012 vs 2013

    Hello All,
I'm planning to buy a refurbished MacBook Pro since I'm tight with budget. This would be my first mac machine ever. So I was hoping if someone can shed some opinion on which one should I go for. But first, I will be using the MacBook for basic photoshop, Office documents (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint), internet, and maybe (just maybe) if I have time from my busy work, I could try to learn in movie editing (just for fun). So anyway, I found 2 refurbished 15" MacBook Pro that fits my budget and seems like they're quite similar (2012 and 2013). The 2013 is only $20 more.

So it looks like the difference between the two is obviously the CPU, the 2012 having an extra GPU, and the 2013 uses the Thunderbolt 2 as far as I know. And I'm not sure if the SSD on the 2012 is SATA as oppose to the 2013 it's PCIe? Base from what I explained above on how will I'll be using the MacBook for, is the 2012 best fit for my needs or is the 2013 a better one?
Thanks all. Please remember I don't have any experience with Macs at all. So I'm hoping someone can help me a little bit. Thanks again.
    - Eddie

PS: side-by-side specs, graphics and drive data rates,
the newer of the two may be the better one to get, as
it has later Thunderbolt  with higher capacities, too.
Look into mactracker or other specification chart that
can be opened beside each other (as I have now) &
then you can see sections in each model, one at a
    time. MacTracker shows general-software-memory+
    graphics-connections-history by category.
2013 model Thunderbolt, Hard Drive Interface, graphics
spec all look good. Not sure if the history of graphic issue
in the dual-graphic card model 2012, was overcome or not.
However this may require some research...
If yours is one that shipped with Mavericks OS X 10.9
you may do well to get a copy of the installer on a
USB and dedicate it as a backup or set up a second
drive or other device to safe a download of the installer
and/or a copy-clone of the Mavericks. The limited total
of RAM available may not be a problem, with both units
shipping with an SSD and not a rotational HDD. And if
you like (& if yours has OS X 10.9) you could then use
OS X 10.10 too.  Be careful an 'upgrade' isn't done to
an older system by accident; surprises aren't so nice.
With either choice, be sure to get & make suitable backup
of your files in addition to a device to use Time Machine.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Need help really badly, macbook pro, just stopped booting up.

Okay. I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro on wednesday(July 12th) and it arrived today (Tuesday July 18th) I turned it on, installed updates to all the programs, then started trying out some of the programs. I decided to instll my copy of Photoshop 7 onto it, but whn I put the disk in nothing happened. I turned the computer off with the disk still in it, walked upstairs and then "Tried" to turn it on. It came on, the little apple gong went off and then after that, nothing happened. All I've been getting ever since has been a white screen and total silence. Nothing else. I've had this computer in my posession for approximately 2 hours. One of those hourse of which it was charging. I am seriously baffled by this and I've read through the trouble shooting section of the manual, tried everything it said to try and still I get nothing but a white screen. Someone help me please. I need this for school which is in a little over a month and I've spent over $3000 on this thing.
    help?

Can you do a PRAM/NVRAM reset?
Resetting PRAM/NVRAM To reset, use the appropriate keys (Command, Option, P and R) should be held immediately at startup. If you continue holding the keys, a second startup chime will occur, then a third, a fourth, and a fifth, etc, until you release the keys. The keys should be held until three startup chimes are heard. This runs contrary to Apple's advice, which suggests that only two chimes are necessary.
This reason for this recommendation is that in cases where holding for two chimes does not resolve issues, holding for three chimes does. Specifically, at issue when a MacBook Pro's battery is not being charged by the system.
