• Need SQL tuning tips in oracle 10g.

From time to time I come across some slow running queries used in SQR. I want to know the tuning technics in oracle 10g as I believe it is different now becasue of CBO.
As I am not an oracle man to tune the query I can try if there are any guidelines. Also while optimizing a query what are the important things need to be considered:
Do you want the first rows back quickly (typically during online processing) or is the total time for the query (typically a batch process) more important?
Are the tables properly indexed to take advantage of the various operations available?
How large are the tables? Joining smaller tables first is usually more efficient.
How selective are the indexes? Indexes on fields that have only a few values don't really help.
How is sorting done? Are sorting and grouping operations necessary?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

How large are the tables? Joining smaller tables first is usually more efficient. The optimizer usually makes this decision
How selective are the indexes? Indexes on fields that have only a few values don't really help. But can still be useful if the data can be read from the index instead of the table.
How is sorting done? Are sorting and grouping operations necessary? This is a business requirement, if you need to sort you need to sort.

• How can I insert a Pages, Doc, or PDF file into a Keynote presentation?

I need to insert a document (.pages, .doc, or .pdf anyone) into a Keynote for a portfolio that I must present. How can I do this? It doesn't give me that option under hyperlink in inspector.

the best is to insert screenshot directly in keynote. If it's for a paper version save everything as pdf and compile with "combine pdf".

• Oracle BPM / SOA Suite and Big and Complex Scenarios

Hi people,
I have worked for a company that in the past chose Oracle BPM (ALBPM at the time) and one of the big problems that the company had was in relation about big processes and complex scenarios.
This company is for the e-commerce area and our processes can have many instances at the same time, for example, a process to all the "order flow" can have thousands, maybe millions instances at the same time.
So we choose to abort the BPMS option in the past and now we back to talk again about BPMS and one question is always made by the company board: if we use BPM again, the new versions can be support all the our volume data?
To be honestly, I don't have this answer so I like to know if any people here has a paper or report about Oracle BPM 11g and big scenarios with many instances. If anybody has a case too, it will be relevant.
Another and the final question: how does the oracle bpm engine treats the case when my engine reboots and before that the engine had many instances active? The istances will be lost?

11g ADF is not certified with 10g SOA Suite. What I mean by this is that your 11g ADF will need to run on WLS 10.3.1 and SOA Suite 10g will eith run on oc4j or WLS 9.2.
ADF is just JDeveloper, you deploy to WLS 11g (10.3.1).
This is the most detailed 10g SOA Suite guide I know for 10g
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10291_01/core.1013/e10294/toc.htm
note that it is for 10.1.3.3, you just need to subsitute for 10.1.3.5 (latest release)

• I need to syncronize MS SQL Server 2000 with Oracle DB

Hello
I need to syncronize MS SQL Server 2000 with Oracle Database. I have created both DB connections succesfully.
1. Oracle DB: Oracle (JDBC)
2. SQL Server JDBC-ODBC (bridge)
When i create a partner link and select a DB Adapter i try to query SQL Server but it never brings the tables back to me.
I´ve tried to configure connection 2 (MSSQL) using thrid party but i really don´t know how.
Driver Class??
Library?
Library Name??
Location??
Class Path?
Source Path??
Doc Path??
URL??
help is appreciated. Thank you.
F.

Here is my setup:
Driver Class: com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
Library: SQLSERVER
ClassPath: Depends on where your jar file is.
URL: jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://your ip address or DNS name goes here.
The above is how my database connection is defined.
When I create a partner link and it gets to the screen where it imports tables it takes a while for the "Querying Database Ojects..." to finish. When it does I have not tables. I then select <all schemas> AGAIN and this time I get the tables.
If you get succeed when you do a test on the connection then I assume the connection is setup right. Perhaps the problem is like mine above and you have to select <all schemas> a second time.

• PL/SQL Object Type - Java oracle.jbo.domain

PL/SQL Object Type <-> Java oracle.jbo.domain
can anybody help me, getting my domains to work?
Following scenario:
in pl/sql we have an object type called MULTI_LANGUAGE. This type is used for storing multilingual texts as nested table in one(!) column.
So the object MULTI_LANGUAGE contains a member variable LANGUAGE_COLLECTION of type LANGUAGE_TABLE, which itself is a nested table of objects
of the type LANGUAGE_FIELD (this again is only a language id and the corresponding content)
Also the methods setContent(langID, langContent) and getContent(langId) are defined on Object MULTI_LANGUAGE.
For example: Table having primary key, 2 other columns and one column of object type MULTI_LANGAGE (=nested table of objects)
|ID|Column1|Column2| multilingual Column |
|--|---------------------------------------|
| | | | ------------------- |
| | | | | 1 | hello | |

|2 | abc | def | | 2 | welt | | <- Row Nr 2
| | | | ------------------- |

attrs[(1)] = new DomainAttributeDef("Content", "CONTENT", 1, java.lang.String.class, 12, "VARCHAR", -127, 4000, false);

Please help, I'm stuck.
Thanks in advance, Christian

Thanks for your suggestion, but it seems to me as if there is one level missing.
in pl/sql I have following structure:
Struct MULTI_LANGUAGE (Object type) - outermost
Array LANGUAGE_TABLE (nested table type)
Struct LANGUAGE_FIELD (Object type simple) - innermostthe reason why i had to wrap another struct around the array was because it is not possible to define methods on a nested table. this is only possible on objects.
on the outermost object type (which holds the array of language fields) I needed to define following 2 methods for direct access:
getContent (langId in number) returns varchar2
setContent (langId in number, langContent in varchar2)
I would like to rebuild the same structure in java, because newly written java code should live in perfect harmony with legacy pl/sql code ;-)
Both applications (Java and pl/sql) have to access the same data as long as migration to java goes on.
Is this nested structure too much for a Domain?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks again, Christian

• General question on SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g

Hello all,
I just have a general question on migration from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g using SQL Developer.
How does it migrate Users with proper privileges from SQL Server to Oracle? Follow the interface steps? Or should the users be created on destination Oracle side?
Thank you.

Hi,
It depends which type of migration you are making.
For a 'Standard' migration when you migrate data a 'create user' statement is created as part of the migration and you will see this in the generated code.
If you are using the 'Quick' migration option then you need to create the Oracle user or use an existing user to receive the data.
Your best option is to review the documentation available from -
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration//workbench/index_sqldev_omwb.html
or directly from -
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12151_01/index.htm
and then get back with specific questions if this does not give you the information you need.

• Problem in Loading Data from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g

Hi All,
I am a university student and using ODI for my final project on real-time data warehousing. I am trying to load data from MS SQL Server 2000 into Oracle 10g target table. Everything goes fine until I execute the interface for the initial load. When I choose the CKM Oracle(Create unique index on the I$ table) km, the following step fails:
21 - Integration - Prj_Dim_RegionInterface - Create Unique Index on flow table
Where Prj_Dim_Region is the name of my target table in Oracle.
The error message is:

I am using a surrogate key column in my target table alongwith the natural key. The natural key is populated by the primary key of my source table, but for the surrogate key, I have created a sequence in my oracle schema where the target table exists and have used the following code for mapping:
<%=snpRef.getObjectName( "L" , "SQ_PRJ_DIM_REGION" , "D" )%>.nextval
I have chosen to execute this code on target.
Among my attempts to solve this problem was to set Create Index option of the CKM Oracle(Create Index for the I$ Table) to No so that it wont create any index on the flow table. I also tried to use the simple CKM Oracle km . Both solutions allowed the interface to execute successfully without any errors, but the data was not loaded into the target table.
When I right-click on the Prj_Dim_Region data store and choose Data, it shows empty. Pressing the SQL button in this data store shows a dialog box " New Query" where I see this query:
select * from NOVELTYFURNITUREDW.PRJ_DIM_REGION
But when i press OK to run it, I get this error message:

Hi Cezar,
Can u plz help me with this scenario?
I have one Oracle data model with 19 source tables and one SQL Server data model with 10 target tables. I have created 10 interfaces which use JournalizedDataOnly on one of the tables in the interface; e.g in interface for DimCustomer target table, I have 2 tables, namely Customer and Address, but the journalizing filter appear only on Customer table and this option is disabled for Address automatically.
Now I want to create a package using OdiWaitForLog event detection. Is it possible to put all these 10 interfaces in just one package to populate the target tables? It works fine when I have only one interface and I use the name of one table in the interface for Table Name parameter of OdiWaitForLogData event, but when I try a comma seperated list of table names[Customer, Address] this error happens
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
and if I use this method <%=odiRef.getObjectName("L","model_code","logical_schema","D")%>, I get this error
"-CDC_SET_NAME=Exception getObjectName("L", "model_code", "logical_schema", "D") : SnpLSchema.getLSchemaByName : SnpLschema does not exist" "
Please let me know how to make it work?
Do I need to create separate data models each including only those tables which appear in their corresponding interface and package? Or do I need to create multiple packages each with only one journalized interface to populate only one target table?
Thank you for your time in advance.
Regards,
Neel

• My Experiences re: Migrating SQL Server Database to Oracle

I am using SQL Developer EA4 for thsi conversion, best attempt yet.
I had numerous problems with this conversion.
1. The wizard asked me to specify the new Oracle database; instead it just ignored this information and created an Oracle database similarly named as the SQL Server database. I also noticed a file name "Migration.out" was produced; it contained errors such as:
Error starting at line 3 in command:
CREATE USER Emulation IDENTIFIED BY Emulation DEFAULT TABLESPACE USERS TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP
Error at Command Line:3 Column:36
Error report:
SQL Error: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
01031. 00000 - "insufficient privileges" and
Error starting at line 4 in command:
GRANT CREATE SESSION, RESOURCE, CREATE VIEW, CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW, CREATE SYNONYM,CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM TO Emulation
Error report:
SQL Error: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
01031. 00000 - "insufficient privileges" and
Error starting at line 7 in command:
CREATE USER dbo_COREv13 IDENTIFIED BY dbo_COREv13 DEFAULT TABLESPACE USERS TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP
Error at Command Line:7 Column:38
Error report:
SQL Error: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
01031. 00000 - "insufficient privileges" and
Error starting at line 8 in command:
GRANT CREATE SESSION, RESOURCE, CREATE VIEW, CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW, CREATE SYNONYM TO dbo_COREv13
Error report:
SQL Error: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
01031. 00000 - "insufficient privileges".
I followed all of the steps listed in the "Help" section re: Migrations but still ended up with these errors.
2. My schema consists of 1000+ tables; approximately 10 tables were NOT created. When I copied the SQL from Migration.sql making NO changes and pasted it into the new Oracle database it created without issues.
3. While the conversion is taking place, different objects (constraints, indexes, foreign keys, etc) are shown to be copied; their appears to be ordering of these items. Shouln't a dependancy tree be established, and object converted based on this?
4. Several tables, in my case about 250 tables did NOT get any data copied across. No reasons given.
5. A log of all activities should be produced for review and completeness.
6. I tried to use the "Migrate select tables" option but met with no success. Apparently, it makes an assumption that both the "source" and "target" databases wil be of the same type (ie both SQL Server or both Oracle); this does not make any sense to me since the point of the exercise is to migrate data from one database vendor to another. Obviously, different database vendors use differing datatypes for similar data (ie dates).
7. I noticed in the "Migration" sql that the "Connect" statements are not correct; they were missing the "instance name" portion.
8. Also, when I looked in the "MIGRATION" sql, I could not find any entries for the last step of the conversion - the movement of data from SQL Server to Oracle. Is this intentional or an oversight.
I dont want to appear negative on this Migration; I have used SQL Developer since it inception; in my opinion this is the best attempt to date.
Murray Sobol

Hi Murray,
Thanks for this feedback.
There is a lot of questions here, I think some of it boils down to misunderstandings, which we should clarify in the doc.
Hopefully Ill get a video of a migration online soon as well.
But here is a brief break down.
*1.*
"The wizard asked me to specify the new Oracle database; instead it just ignored this information and created an Oracle database similarly named as the SQL Server database."
So this relates to Step 7 of the Migration Wizard. Where you can select the target connection.
SQL Developer doesn't ignore the Target Connection you selected, It just uses it to connect to the target database , not the target schema.
SQL Developer generates a new target schema for the migrated objects. It standard approach is not to generate objects directly into an existing Schema.
The Target Connection is used to create all the migrated objects (including new Oracle Schemas) in your target oracle database. So you should choose an Oracle Target Connection which has enough privileges to create new Schemas and Objects.
But as you have found, it doesn't generate the migrate objects , like tables, ... , directly into your chosen Target Connection.
From the errors you encountered it doesn't sound like the Target Connection (and the underling Oracle Schema) doesn't have the privileges to create other Schemas.
If you use something like a connection to the SYSTEM schema on your target database, it should run OK.
It wont create any objects in SYSTEM, rather it will use SYSTEM privileges to create a new schema (ex: dbo_Northwind) and populate it.
You don't have to use SYSTEM, but you do need a schema with enough privileges to create other schemas.
That is the straight forward way. But if you really need to generate into an existing schema the following steps can be taken.
a)rename the schema under the Converted Database Objects
b)Right click "Converted Databases Objects" and choose generate. it will kick off the Migration Wizard in the correct place
*2.*
My schema consists of 1000+ tables; approximately 10 tables were NOT created. When I copied the SQL from Migration.sql making NO changes and pasted it into the new Oracle database it created without issues.
When you say Migration.sql , is the entire generation file , which can be found in your <outputspecified>/generated/<projectname.modelname>.sql ?
When your say "pasted it into the new Oracle database" , are you running it in SQL Developers SQL Worksheet using the Target Connection.
Basically your migration is all out of shape once the target Schemas are not created. So the above issues (insufficient privileges) has to be resolved first.
Please post back if it is still an issue.
*3.*
While the conversion is taking place, different objects (constraints, indexes, foreign keys, etc) are shown to be copied; their appears to be ordering of these items. Shouln't a dependancy tree be established, and object converted based on this?
Objects are converted in a particular order and their dependencies are persisted so that they can be generated in the correct order.
Are you seeing an issue?
*4.*
Several tables, in my case about 250 tables did NOT get any data copied across. No reasons given.
I'm surprised any tables were populated with data due to the target schema not being created.
The online data move is pretty simple and it does not report or recover very well from issues.
If you are having difficulties once item 1. is resolved, please post an example of the source table and I will give it a go.
For better control of the data move with much more powerful tweaking, error handling, reporting and performance try the offline data move.
SQL Developer can created a suite of scripts which use SQL Servers BCP tool to dump out the data to dat files, and Oracle SQL*Loader tool to insert the data in the dat file into Oracle.
*5.*
A log of all activities should be produced for review and completeness.
The output/generated/<projectname.modelname>.out provides the output of running the generation script.
The migration reports http://dermotoneill.blogspot.com/2010/11/migration-reports-30.html outline what happens during the migration.
Apart from online data move issues, is there any other data missing?
*6.*
Do you mean "Copy To Oracle" ? This option is intended to migrate tables from non Oracle databases like SQL Server to Oracle.
Can you give more details on what issue you are seeing.
*7.*
I noticed in the "Migration" sql that the "Connect" statements are not correct; they were missing the "instance name" portion.
The generation script is meant to be run using SQL Developers SQL Worksheet. I think you only get this "instance name" issue if running from SQL*Plus.
Can you confirm
8. Also, when I looked in the "MIGRATION" sql, I could not find any entries for the last step of the conversion - the movement of data from SQL Server to Oracle. Is this intentional or an oversight.
The online data move is performed separately from creating the objects. It is not script based, it uses JDBC to pump the data from the source database to the target database.
In summary , I would
a) Create a connection to your Target database using your SYSTEM schema
b) Right click on your "Converted Database Objects" and choose "Generate Target"
c) Choose your new "System" connection as the Target Connection
d) Follow the Migration Wizard to the end.
You will end up with a new target Schema and the migrated objects in it.
Check the .out file to see the errors
and the migration reports http://dermotoneill.blogspot.com/2010/11/migration-reports-30.html

support english,simple chinese character.
oracle 9i - character set :NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII
2. aim
export sql server objects(main is tables) into oracle intergrally
3.question:
3.1 the field which includes chinese data, after exporting, displays "????" code.
3.2 how to export sql ntext field into oracle?
thanks a lot

You need to setup your Oracle Database use character set that support Chinesre Character. For example a unicode character set AL16UTF16.

• How to Migrate Stored procedure on Sql server 2008 to Oracle Database

Guys, I need help vey badly as I am new in this field.
Problem is that, I have to migrate stored procedure on Sql server 2008 to oracle Oracle database:
Whole scenario--
1. Sql Server 2008 application on Windows server (source machine)
2. I have to migrate 70 Stored Procedure
3. To Oracle Database on Linux machine (Target machine)
Any method (no problem)
Please, help me or give me any reference as I don't know which keyword is differ in both database.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
You could the free Oracle SQL*Developer to do this.
There is information and a download link here -
Oracle SQL Developer</title><meta name="Title" content="Oracle SQL Developer"><meta n…
and information on using it for migrations here -
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/migration/index-084442.html
You could use it in 2 ways -
1. Go through a migration but just pull the stored procedure code from the file created after you generate the SQL from the SQL*Server database
2. Use the scratch editor accessed from -
- Tools - Migration - Scratch Editor
and paste the SQL*Server stored procedure code into the window and it will convert it to Oracle code. The tool is very good but may have problems if you have very complicated procedures that use SQL*Server specific utilities.

• Need help for switching to Oracle Apps

Hi All,
I am a System Analyst working in Singapore for the last 6 yrs.Currently for the last 3+ years i am in the project implementation & support team for ERP Team.We are using JD Edwards.Currently i have the role of Functional Consultant.
I want to shift to Oracle Apps (11i).The reason being there is not much scope in JD Edwards.Intially i was working in Developer 2000 as a Forms/Reports Developer.
I couple of questions to ask :
1) Do i need to go though a Oracle Apps Training as i already have experience in Jd Edwards ??
2) Can somebody recommend some good Training institutes in Singapore with Placement Assistance ??
3) Do anybody knows any company in Singapore who can give training in Oracle Apps and take in professionals who want to make a switch but have experience in another ERP package ??
Thanks
Regards

Hi,
As you said you were initially working on Developer2000 so it would be lot easier since there would enough background on PL/SQL,forms and reports.Best thing for you I would recomend is pick 2 or 3 modules of your area in JD Edwards like Financials(General Ledger,Recievables,Purchasing,Payables,Fixed Assests...) or HRMS Suite(HRMS,Payroll,Advanced Benefits) which I believe the core business logic for any ERP would be the same. So pick your strong modules in JD Edwards and go through the Oracle Apps Doc. which is available online. In the documentation you will find Application Developer Guide which will be helpful if you are looking to be an Technical Person or you can go through the Module wise documentation if interested in Functional position. Either case better to have overall idea about interested module I mean how the logic and setup will be.
Initially it will be rough however if you don't give up Apps is lot easier.

• How to block Sql Plus sessions in Oracle 10g

Hi,
I want to block all sql plus sessions in oracle 10g, as we have a application and we need each and every one to use this application not the sql plus session.
Kindly update us as soon as possible. and also thanks in advanced.

Understand the concept Karl, but a layered defense seldom works in the IP world. If I manage to get through the firewall, then how can you prevent me access, at IP level, at any other ISO stack layer? If you manage to get through, then your firewall policies could just be too weak :) at least you must have some kind of an IDS infrastructure in place..
what I mean is, you can have infinite number of threats.. and this will be part of your Risk Analysis. Determining all possible threats to the assets, what are being protected and their associated value, and predicting the rate of occurrence.... with all of these you could probably come up with contingency plans and incident response.. And most of all, you should not ignore the fact that people are creative, ingenious, and curious, and they'll prove this to you by testing your security implementations. So you'll have to periodically evaluate your security.. that's why there are audits.. Also, you must balance Security, Performance, Usability, and your Budget.
Yes, you can argue that if the entire firewall goes down (thus no IP defense), then something like DBV (or even denying IPs in sqlnet) can provide some defense. But is that not then a case of too little too late? It's better too little too late, than no protection at all... Imagine if there's no DBV, or if you have not implemented the concept of "Least Privilege"? or if the backups and exports are not encrypted? That would be more devastating.. that's the importance of database security options and features in providing "defense in depth"
I question just what purpose and how effective IP packet security is at higher layers. It can never substitute doing this instead at firewall level. Well, it's not all about network security. All facets must be considered and the inter-relationships should be understand. Like the core information security and access management, physical and personnel security, training them, etc... And all of these are equally important in providing a secure ecosystem
As for security that relies on the client to pass secure data (like executable name or o/s user name)... all this can easily be spoofed. Even if the app and Oracle driver are somehow digitally signed and these signatures can be verified on the server side, we only need to look at Vista to see how secure this really would be. Microsoft attempted to encrypt every single h/w and s/w layer from the physical DVD track to the pixel on the monitor.. and this was defeated. And this was done as o/s kernel level. It is less complex to hack at driver level and even trivial to do it at application level.Security is about risk management. Blocking SQL*Plus does not negate the risk of SQL from the wild being run on a production server. For example, the client is a VB client using ODBC. It is easy to create a proxy that accepts the ODBC connection from the VB client and proxy the OCI packets to the real Oracle server. Now you have a man-in-the-middle than can inspect every single SQL call made to Oracle, and inject any PL/SQL or SQL code it wants.
Security is far beyond writing a login trigger to deny SQL*Plus sessions and calling that a defense. >
Yes I agree with you. That's why there are independent organizations and regulating bodies that provides security best practices, to give us a headstart on comming up of strong security policies.
And one of my favorites is the one provided by IASE (sponsored by Defense Information Systems Agency) where there's lot of content regarding hardening and policies

• PL/Sql concurent program in Oracle 10.7

Hi
I am creating a PL/SQL concurrent program in Oracle version 10.7. I need to write some messages to the log file. I know this can easily be done in 11i using FND_FILE.
In 10.7, I am trying to use UTL_FILE. I get the logfile name from FND_CONCURRENT_REQUESTS using following cursor:
SELECT logfile_name
FROM fnd_concurrent_requests
WHERE request_id = fnd_global.conc_request_id;
This gives the correct name, when i try to open the file for writing after parsing, i get an error. The system is not able to open the file in Append mode, when i open the file in read mode, it does not give any errors.
Same is the case for the outfile as well.
Is it possible to write to the log file in 10.7. I used the append mode, since the concurrent manager also write to the same file.
Any pointers ?
thanks and regards

utl_file_dir = * --> This is valid and can be used, but its not recommended to use it since it makes any directory accessible to the UTL_FILE function. Instead use utl_file_dir = path1, path2, .. etc (use an absolute directory path).
I am not sure about 10.7, but for 11.0.x you have to verify that APPLPTMP is included in the setting of the utl_file_dir. Once you change this, restart the concurrent manager and make sure that the user who start the CM has read/write priviliges on APPLPTMP and utl_file_dir.
You can verify that the PL/SQL runs properly for reading/writing from/to utl_file_dir from SQL*Plus
