Need to determine location of main class

I want to be able to run a Java program that accesses files somewhere relative to the file that contains its main class. I want the program to be able to access these files no matter what directory the user executes it from. The user can run the program from any location, so I can't just look at the current working directory.
My first attempt at a solution was to use a configuration file in the user's home directory that tells the program where to look for the other files it needs, but this solution has met with some resistance. I would like to be able to determine the program file's path from within the program. Is this possible?
andy

Rather than trying to find the main class' absolute path, use Class.getResource or Class.getResourceAsStream to find something that's in your classpath.
Let's say you have the following: C:\classes\com\foo\Bar.class
C:\classes\config\cfg.cfg[
java -cp C:\classes com.foo.BarThen you'd do something like this: class Bar {
... main(...) {
        InputStream in = Bar.class.getResourceAsStream("config/cfg.cfg");
        // read and process input stream
}All you need is to know where cfg.cfg is relative to some classpath element. You don't need to know which element, just that its in /config/cfg.cfg relative to one of the jars or dirs in your classpath.

  • Java .class files - Moving the Main Class .class file to a new location

    Novice question....so much so that I hope it's even coherent...
    In a Java program which references many associated .class files (e.g. bicycleMain.class, bicycleSub1.class, bicycleSub2.class, etc....), do the associated .class files always have to be located in the same directory as the Main .class file?
    What I'm getting at is - If I've developed an application consisting of several .class files on my own Windows PC and I want to put the compiled application out on our Windows File Server so that anyone can execute my application, how would I go about doing this?
    Say I put the compiled .class files in H:\PROJECTS\JAVA\COMPILED\, will other people be able to execute the application from their PCs by simply issuing the command line:
    'java h:\projects\java\compiled\bicycleMain'
    Any insights would be very helpful in getting me oriented. Thanks in advance.

    Interesting...so are you saying the command line might look something like this:
    java -classpath h:\projects\java\compiled bicycleMain
    And if I want other people to be able to execute the application without specifying the -classpath option then they would need to manually update the ClassPath environment variable on their individual PCs first?

  • Need to determine plant and storaeg location for item in delivery

    Hello All,
    I have an inbound IDOC which changes the quantity of items in a delivery and also adds new items if necessary. I need to do a auto PGI also if required.
    Am using BDC to update the delivery. Now the problem is when I add a new item to the delivery. I add the material, quantity and Unit recieved from the IDOC. I need to determine the plant and storage location and fill that too in the delivery.
    Kindly let me know how I can determine these two values. Which table holds this data?
    Please note that I am changing only the delivery. The document preceding the delivery wont be changed.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Johnson

    normally the plant is determined on this basis:
    customer inforecord (table KNMT)
    customer master (KNVV)
    material (MVKE)
    The storage location is determined in table TVKOL based on:
    shipping point (you have it in delivery header LIKP-VSTEL)
    plant (see above)
    storage conditions (material master MARA-RAUBE)
    regards

  • Need help with custom event from Main class to an unrelated class.

    Hey guys,
    I'm new to Flash and not great with OOP.  I've made it pretty far with google and lurking, but I've been pulling my hair out on this problem for a day and everything I try throws an error or simply doesn't hit the listener.
    I'm trying to get my Main class to send a custom event to an unrelated class called BigIcon.  The rest of the code works fine, it's just the addEventListener and dispatchEvent that isn't working.
    I've put in the relevant code in below.  Let me know if anything else is needed to troubleshoot.  Thank you!

    Alright, this compiles, gives me no errors, shows my 'book' and 'flowers' icons perfectly when ran, and prints 'addEventListener' to the output window as expected.  I get no errors when I press the button, 'dispatchEvent' is output (good), but the 'twitchUp' function is never called and 'EventTriggered' is never output.

  • Determine a string from main class in an outside class

    Hello there,
    This might be stupid question but I cant think, I am so very tired. Okay here is the question, is there any way we could see or the get the value of a string(just a string which is set in main class'A', its already set, we cannot make it static r anything like that)in a method outside that main class, probably in a method 'x' in class'C'.
    Thanks
    potti

    Yes, you can, in many ways, or else Java would be moot. Excluding the static way of doing it, which by the way is evil, your class C can make an instance of class A and then access it either as a public field or as the value returned by a public method. You can also use inheritance, but it's pointless in this case, inheritance is meant to abstract, extend functionality, and prevent having to rewrite code. It's not meant for accessing fields. And by the way, inheritance, too, is evil.
    This is one way to do it.
    class A {
         public String s = "great balls of fire";
    public class C {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              A myInstance = new A();
              String s = myInstance.s;
              System.out.println(s);
    }This is the preferred way to do it, as it encapsulates the String. The idea of encapsulation is to access fields by a method instead of directly since interfaces are less likely to change than an object's data and in the case that the object's data does change and the interface does not, the changes will remain local.
    class A {
         private String s = "great balls of fire";
         public String getS() { return s; }
    public class C {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              A a = new A();
              String s = a.getS();
              System.out.println(s);
    }

  • Help needed with application: "could not find the main class"

    I am pretty new to java and am trying to figure out applications a bit now. The one im working on does run within my editor, but when i "test" it or try to run it from within a .jar file it returns a "could not find the main class" error.
    I have a code similar to this:
    public class user{
    public static void main(String[] args){
    new user();
    public user{
    Does this have to do with it? I've been trying to get this right for a couple of days now, I just wanna be able to run it (on either my pc or another) without starting the Editor.
    Looking forward to receiving an answer..

    It sounds like you are missing the Main-Class attribute in your manifest file. Create a file 'manifest.mf' with the following line 'Main-Class: user'
    Then include that manifest in your jar:
    'jar -cfm user.jar manifest.mf user.class'
    Then run the jar: 'java -jar user.jar'

  • 2 Threads issues. How to return data from a thread located in other class

    I have 2 questions.
    This is the context. From main I start one thread that does a little job then starts another thread and waits for it to end to continue.
    1) The last started thread needs to return a string to the Thread started from main. How can I accomplish that, because I read that I cannot use
    synchronized methods outside different classes (and the threads belongs to different classes).
    2) From the main thread I start the Second Thread located in another class like this ClassName obj = new ClassName(arg); obj.start(); obj.join()
    Is that correct for waiting for the created thread to finish ?

    1) The last started thread needs to return a string to the Thread started from main. How can I accomplish that, because I read that I cannot use
    synchronized methods outside different classes (and the threads belongs to different classes).Threads do not "belong" to classes. Class code executes in a particular thread. The class instances exist as long as something, somewhere, holds a strong reference to them.
    So when you start a new thread, hold a strong reference to the object being executed by that thread. When the thread is done, retrieve your data from that object.
    Even better, don't subclass Thread to create your objects. Instead, implement Callable, and use a ThreadPoolExecutor to execute it.

  • How can i execute Spaces API in java main class?

    Hi
    I am able to execute Spaces API through portal application. However if i try to execute it in java main class, its throwing an exception
    "SEVERE: java.io.FileNotFoundException: .\config\jps-config.xml (The system cannot find the path specified)"
    oracle.wsm.common.sdk.WSMException: WSM-00145 : Keystore location or path can not be null or empty; it must be configured through JPS configuration or policy configuration override.
    How can i set this path, so that i can execute Spaces API from java main class.
    Need this main class to configure in cron job, to schedule a task.
    Regards
    Raj

    Hi Daniel
    Currently i have implemented create functionality in my portal application using Spaces API, which is working fine. Now the requirement is, i need to implement a "Cron Job" to schedule a task, which will execute to create space(for example once in a week). Cron job will execute only the main method. So I have created java main class, in which I have used Spaces API to perform create space operation. Then it was giving exception.
    Later I understood the reason, as I am executing the Space API with a simple JSE client, its failing since a simple java program has no idea of default-keystore.jks, jps-config.xml, Security Policy. Hence i have included those details in main class. Now I am getting new error,
    SEVERE: WSM-06303 The method "registerListener" was not called with required permission "oracle.wsm.policyaccess"
    For your reference i have attached the code below, please help. How can i use Spaces API in java main method(i mean public static void main(String[] args) by giving all required information.

  • Could not find the main class: oracle.ide.boot.Launcher.  Program will exit

    Hi,
    I have installed Oracle11g_win64_11gR1, Database and Client.
    The issue is unable to invoke "sqldeveloper", getting the following error message. Could you please help ?
    FYI. I have already downloaded and installed installed JRE and JDK.
    ie. C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\ and C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_24, still did not work.
    C:\Users\oracle>java -version

    I was able to resolve this issue by performing following.
    1. Go to the location where sqldeveloperW.exe is being executed from.
    2. You will find a file sqldeveloper.conf in that location. Edit this file and change the value of IncludeConfFile to point to actual place. For me following were old and new values.
    OLD (Wrong) : IncludeConfFile ../../jdev/bin/ide.conf
    NEW (Correct) : IncludeConfFile ../../ide/bin/ide.conf
    After making above change in the sqldeveloper.conf file. Save and close it. Restart SQLDeveloper. You will not get the error anymore.
    Thanks

  • Unable to locate specified base class 'resources.style1.HelpButtonIcon' for component class

    Hi,
    I have a Flex (4.1.0) project, which has many skinnable custom components. The application allows a user to choose another style which changes these skins via loading a new compiled CSS. These non-default skins are in a separate Flex project.  I've not had a problem with this method until now.
    The custom component I am skinning contains several icons which are defined in the component like this:
    [SkinPart(required="true", type="mx.core.IVisualElement")]
    public var componentIconHelp:IFactory;
    then I use the iconRendererFunction to return the appropriate component part:
    private function iconRendererFunction(item:Object):IFactory
         //truncated method
         return componentIconHelp;
    Within the skin for "style1", I then have
    <s:Skin xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
         xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
         xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
         xmlns:style1="resources.style1.*">
    <!-- host component -->
    <fx:Metadata>
         [HostComponent("myApp.components.ButtonComponent")]
    </fx:Metadata>
    <fx:Declarations>
         <fx:Component id="componentIconHelp">
              <style1:HelpButtonIcon />
         </fx:Component>
    </Declarations>
    When I try to compile this, I get the "Unable to locate specified base class 'resources.style1.HelpButtonIcon' for component class 'resources.style1.ButtonComponentSkinInnerClass0'" error.
    If I remove the HelpButtonIcon from the <fx:Component> declaration, and just put it in the main body of the skin, it compiles and renders, but I need it to be a component (there's multiple components I have to choose from to display, similar to the ButtonBar skin).
    Any ideas why it's not compiling and what I need to do to achive this?
    Thanks

    Thanks, one step closer (or further away :-)
    I tried adding the airspark.swc to the library path for the project and it made no difference so I added:
    -external-library-path /Applications/Adobe Flash Builder 4/sdks/4.0.0/frameworks/libs/air/airspark.swc
    to the external tools configuration and now get the error:
    command line: Error: unable to open 'Flash'
    The project itself runs fine, it's only the ASDocs that's causing problems.

    as you can see, my program TestMaker compiles but when i try running it i get all these errors, i have no idea what's wrong with this

    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: StdInThat means that you are using a class (StdIn), that is not on your classpath, but in some other place.
    The "-cp ." tells Java to ignore the CLASSPATH variable and just look in the current directory instead. You probably had the location of StdIn on your CLASSPATH variable.
    What you need to do in this case is to add the current directory "." to your CLASSPATH variable.
    Go [learn about the Classpath here|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/tools/windows/classpath.html].
