  • Do I need to use standby database in begin backup mode to take the backup?

    Hi All,
I have a 10g(10.2.0.4) primary database with standby on a solaris platform. I need to create another standby database for the same primary.
I have stopped the recovery on existing standby database and started copying(os copy) the files from existing standby to 2nd standby server. However I haven't kept the existing standby database(mounted) in begin backup mode. Is it okay?
    Thanks,

  • Need help on Standby database v8.1.7 on Windows

    Hello All,
Our current setup to create a standby database consists of a bunch of scripts. I'm trying to convert this such that we can use OEM 9.2 and have jobs to do the backup and be able to create the standby database using point and click. Does anyone have this setup?
This is where I am....I've created the primary database and the standby database. They both work well and next i try to do a failover. The failover works and my new primary database is now active. I want to recreate the standby database now (old primary).
I do a backup of the new primary database do say D:\backup\. I go on the standby and I restore the controlfile. Next when I attempt to do the restore, I get the following error: RMAN-03002: failure during compilation of command
    RMAN-03013: command type: IRESTORE
RMAN-06026: some targets not found - aborting restore
RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restore.
How can i fix this? Is there a way to tell RMAN that the backup is under D:\Backup\? How do I catalog the files? I remember on 10g you could do this..but that's if you use a recovery catalog. In this case, i'm using the controlfile to do the restore...not using Recovery Catalog.
    Any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Upon reading the document i am not clear on upgrade path like do i need to upgrade clusterware as well or not?You need to upgrade the clusterware before RDBMS....therefore it is not optional. You first need to upgrade the clusterware and then the RDBMS.
The steps listed by you seems to be in order (from a high-level).

  • NEED TO MAKE STANDBY DATABASE

Hello Experts, We are making an standby database. Our version of oracle : ORACLE 10 G 10.2
OS : WINDOWS 2003 SERVER. We are making export weekly 3 times from the production database. To ensure the avilabiliy , We are making a standy by database
with same OS and Oracle too. Kindly some one tell me the correct way to import the data base to the standby database.. We need the exact copy of the production database on the standby server. (like image). I need the exact IMPORT tool syntax. KINDLY HELP ME.

How do you move data from one database to another?
several methods, one in particular stands out: transportable tablespaces.
In this approach, you take a set of self-contained, read-only tablespaces, export only the metadata, copy the datafiles of those tablespaces at the OS level to the target platform, and import the metadata into the data dictionary—a process known as plugging.
OS file copy is generally much faster than other traditional means of data movement such as export/import.

  • Logical Standby Database in NOARCHIVE Mode

    Hi,
I have configured a Logical Standby Database for Reporting purposes. A Physical Standby Database is running for MAA. i.e. in case of Role Transition (switch/Failover) the Physical Stdby Db will get the role of the Primary.
The logical standby database is creating a lot of Archive Redologs files, nearly every minute. Redolog files are 50MB and there is no work done in db during the time. I'm NOT using Standby Redolog files.
Is there a need for logical standby database to be in NOARCHIVELOG mode? The Primary is definatley in ARCHIVELOG mode.
    Thanks for any responses.
    regards
    Sahba

    hi,
well there are two things to the above:-
    1. there was an archive file nearly every minute:
this is due to a db recovery. for some reason, the db was in inconsistent state, after a sudden shutdownof the OS. I was on a test environment, on windows vista, unfortunately. unimportant ... a reboot solved it.
    2. Logical standby db in NOARCHIVE MODE when setup for the purpose of Reporting.
As long as the MAA configured for the primary db, such as physical standby db, and a second, the logical standby db setup purely for the purpose of reporting, which then can run with NOARCHIVELOG mode, after converting the physical standby db to logical.
logical standby db uses Streams architecture, so this method brings cost, time and performance advantages to the customer.

  • RE logical/physical standby database

    1. Why logical standby database is SQL apply, and Physical standby database is redo apply? What ‘s the meaning/objective for that? (pls don’t tell me what is SQL/redo apply)
    2. As we know, a logical standby database can be used for reporting and querying if primary database is down, why we still need a physical standby database (it can’t do that during recovering process, it just a same copy of primary database)? Why not just go ahead to set up only a perfect logical standby database? (just because logical one can’t accommodate all kinds of data type???)
    3. Combined with Real time Apply and maximum protection, we can achieve a zero data loss, but could we achieve a zero downtime? Why or why not?

  • Online Redolog Archiving on Logical Standby Databases!!

    Hi,
Can I safely stop archiving on logical standby database? It has been inherited from primary database at the time of creation, but I don't see any reason why to keep it enabled while it's consuming unnecessary disk space on our server!!
Any body can give a valid reason to keep it enabled??
    Thanks

    hi
u dont need archiving on standby database as standby database reads archive files that come from primary database.its simply wastage of resource.stand by database was created from primary by taking a full backup.and to apply the archive files in case of failure u need atleast 1 backup of stand by database .and i assume u wont go for taking backup of standby database.
just worry about the archives of primary database.

  • Check actual apply log time on standby database after synchronization

    Hi All,
I want to check the date and time stamp of applied archived logs on stanby database. How should I check that??
My dataguard link was broken for sometime and meanwhile lot of transactions happened on primary database. Now When the link came up the synchronisation happened within few hours and ultimatly transport and appliy lag became 0. But now I want to check actual time taken for tranporting the logs and applying them on standby database. Is there any way I could do that easily..
    Thanks

This script written by Yousef Rifai I found here http://www.dba-village.com/village/dvp_forum.OpenThread?ThreadIdA=34772&DestinationA=RSS might be just what you need (run on standby database):
    set ver off
    alter session set nls_date_format='dd-mon-yy hh24:mi:ss'
    select app_thread, seq_app, tm_applied,
    nvl(seq_rcvd,seq_app) seq_rcvd, nvl(tm_rcvd,tm_applied) tm_rcvd
    from
    (select sequence# seq_app, FIRST_TIME tm_applied, thread# app_thread
from v$archived_log where applied = 'YES'
    and (first_time, thread#) in (
    select max(FIRST_TIME ), thread#
from v$archived_log where applied = 'YES'
    group by thread# )
    (select sequence# seq_rcvd, FIRST_TIME tm_rcvd, thread# rcvd_thread
from v$archived_log where applied = 'NO'
    and (first_time, thread#) in (
    select max(FIRST_TIME ), thread#

  • Active data guard standby database

    Hello,
we have to choose which technology to use for maintain Oracle backup center synchronized with main center. This backup center should be read only, and data generated in main should be replicated into backup. So I would like to use Active Data Guard, but I have a possible issue with reading in backup center, because reading is not just select, but filling(inserting data) some temporary tables (from client side, and from procedures in database). Will Standby database in backup center allow this if Active Data Guard is used. We would go with Oracle 11gR2.
Also other suggestions on replication technologies (I know there are RAC, ADG, Oracle Streams, Golden Gate), or any document which would help us decide which of these technologies would suit our needs the best.
    Thank You.

In 11.1 or later you can use feature "Snapshot Standby Databases" if this write on database is temporary (i.e you will not use the new data) and at backup time you not need use Snapshot Standby Database feature.
A snapshot standby database is a physical standby database that you temporarily convert into an updatable standby database. You can use snapshot standby databases as clones or test databases to validate new functionality and new releases, and when finished you then convert the database back into a physical standby. While running in the snapshot standby database role, it continues to receive and queue redo data so that data protection and the RPO are not sacrificed.
A snapshot standby database has the following characteristics:
    * A snapshot standby database cannot be the target of a switchover or failover. A snapshot standby database must first be converted back into a physical standby database before performing a role transition to it.
    * A snapshot standby database cannot be the only standby database in a Maximum Protection Data Guard configuration.
    Note:
Flashback Database is used to convert a snapshot standby database back into a physical standby database. Any operation that cannot be reversed using Flashback Database technology will prevent a snapshot standby from being converted back to a physical standby.

  • Materialized View Logs in a logical standby database

I am trying to create materialized views based on a few tables in a logical standby database.
The target database (11g R2) where the MVs will be created is a stand-alone database.
The DB where the base tables reside is a logical standby database (11g R2).
The requirement is to do a "FAST REFRESH" of the Materialized Views.
    My questions are :
    1. Can I create MV logs in the logical standby DB?
    2. If the answer to question no. 1 is "Yes", do I need to do anything different or configure the logical standby DB in a specific manner in order to create MV logs. From what I understand, the objects in the logical standby database are in a locked state. Is that going to be a problem ?
Any other information that might be relevant is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    I appreciate your quick response.

  • Logical Standby Database - Materialized Views

    Hi,
Are materialized views applied from the primary to the standby? They are not mentioned in the 9i documentation as being excluded, but I cannot get a simple one to apply. The standby database log file claims that it is running the DDL, but I do not see the MV. In previous tests, both table and view create statements have worked along with various DML statements.

The output is as follows .
    SQL> SELECT APPLIED_SCN, NEWEST_SCN, READ_SCN, NEWEST_SCN-APPLIED_SCN FROM DBA_LOGSTDBY_PROGRESS;

  • Need temp tables in Standby Database

I have created a standby database that is going to be used for reporting as well. I was told that no temp tables can be created for reporting. I have created a temp tablespace on my primary and a tempfile on my standby and I'm able to put it into read-only mode and run queries. But the developers need the ability to create temp tables for certain reports to run. How can I get around this with my standby database? Is there any way to use temp tables from the primary when running these reports on the standby?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated!
    Thanks,
    Bea Cary
    DBA

I need couple of temp tables when my process starts, load the data into them, do all calculationsSQL Server has Temp Table because it does not have the flexibility for SQL as Oracle Does. I bet you can achieve what every you are trying to do in SQL Server by storing in a temp table by just single SELECT statement in oracle.
With the latest introduction of MODEL clause we can really do magic in SQL. Even then if you want to store your data you can go for Collection Types in PL/SQL.

  • Implementing Oracle StandBy Database - Suggestion & Tips needed Pls.

    Dear Sir,
With rerefence to high availability of our database, we would like to implement a standby database. Regarding this, i have few doubts and request all you expert to pls. help me out. This goes like this:
    1. What is DataGuard.? Is it Separate product in Oracle or Part of Oracle Database Server - Enterprise Edition.?
    2. Is standby database implemented / created ONLY using DataGaurd?
    3. Do we need to buy another license for Oracle Database when i go for implementing StandBy Database.?
Basically we want if my main production server is down, it should automatically go to my StandBy database and does not stop my application. This is possible i feel by implementing Standby database. And we are thingking to do it. In that respect, we have above query.
I would request if somebody could be guide us and help.
    Thanks.

you can get DATAGUARD in Oracle Database Enterprise Edition !!
this is script for Craeting Standby DB!!
                   Creating Standby Database
    Primary Server Configuration
1.In the TNSNAMES.ORA of Primary DB add the entry of the Standby DB
IRCSSTDB(This is the service name in Primary DB to connect to Standby DB) =

(SERVICE_NAME = IRCS(This is the actual INSTANCE name of Running DB on Standby DB)
    2. There is no need to Make any Changes in the Listener.ora of PRIMARY DB
Keep LISTENER.ORA of Primary as it is
Copy Listener.ora from Primary DB to Standby DB and make following changes
Delete All the Extra Existing listeners.
(These Modifications are for the STANDBY DB)
    LISTENER =

    6.     SQL:> alter database mount standby database;
    7. SQL :> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE;
    4. we can also add these parameter in INIT.ORA of Standby DB
1.standby_archive_dest= /u00/app/oracle/admin/sec/arch (Same path as in
    (log_archive_dest_1) in init.ora
    2. Fal_client=standby1 (Service Name)
    3. Fal_server=primary1 (Service Name)
    Troubleshooting….
    1. Check Init.ora of Primary DB
    2. Try to open Standby Database in normal mode try to connect it with normal user from different Machine.
3.check *.logs file on Standby Database
    4.Check v$archive_dest on Primary DB
    5. lsnrctl services <listener name>….For Checking Listener, for service
