Needless inline styles and span tags

OS: Win XP SP 2
Product: RoboHelp HTML 6
Output: WebHelp
I am finding some instances of needless inline styles and
span tags in some topics in a project. Around these problematic
instances are plenty of instances that have no problem. I used
non-problematic instances as guides for correcting the problematic
instances. Fortunately, RH hasn't overwritten any of my
corrections.
I am concerned about the insertion of needless inline styles
and span tags at two levels. First, I see them as indicators of
inconsistency. Whether the inconsistency is in myself or in RH, I
don't know (but I want to eliminate it). Second, needless code is
wasteful (esp., wastes time in code view).
Has anybody seen this before? Does anyone know or suspect a
cause?
SAMPLE 1
RH6 created: <p><span><span
style="font-weight: normal;">blah blah yaddi
yaddi</span></span></p>
I corrected: <p>blah blah yaddi yaddi</p>
SAMPLE 2
RH6 created: <p style="font-weight: normal;"><span
style="font-weight: normal;">blah blah yaddi
yaddi</span></p>
I corrected: <p>blah blah yaddi yaddi</p>
SAMPLE 3
RH6 created: <p style="font-weight: bold;"><span
style="font-weight: bold;">blah blah yaddi
yaddi</span></p>
I corrected: <p style="font-weight: bold;"><>blah
blah yaddi yaddi</p>

Some of this has to do with how users have applied styles in
WYSIWYG mode; for example, if you double click a word (which
selects the space after) and apply Bold, then later select the word
by dragging the cursor to select only the word (which doesn't
select the space after), RH will usually surround the selected
characters with "normal" span tags and often leave the bold in
place.
This same type of style formatting might have been repeatedly
done in the original form that might have been imported (Word,
Frame, etc.). So, then, if you compound the code bloat from an
imported file with additional formatting in RH, well you do the
math.
I've seen code wherein a six-word sentence might be saddled
with as many as 10-12 SPAN tags and might stretch into 6-7 lines of
code!
However, these are still flat files, not binary; you'd need a
ton of extra code to increase the aggregate file size a lot. Heck,
your graphics will usually take more room than your topics. One of
our child projects has 153 .htm files at 3.25 MB, whereas the
aggregate of .gif, .jpg, and .bmp graphics exceed 4 MB. My view has
always been this: until the underlying code affects the format I
expect to see in my output, I consider extra SPAN and KADOV tags to
be nothing but white noise.
Good luck,
Leon

  • A challenge to Adobe: Allow me to use inline styles in DW by default or I dump DW

    Years ago I switched from FP to DW because FP started forcing people to use CSS over HTML. That was FP 2000. I switched to DW because it respected my code... Now that CSS is mainstream and we are all in love with it, DW CS4 decides to throw a bone and tell me to fetch -- forces me to use CSS rules. I am fine with Adobe hurting my intelligence but at the very least I need the ability to convert CSS rules to inline styles. I do a lot of HTML emails for clients and as I am sure you know, Adobe, most [web] email clients ignore external CSS and <style> tag. Or let me put it this way: I simply want to choose between inline style and rules based on type of project. No questions or comments please.
    So Adobe, you can remove this post right away if you like, but here is the challenge for you: If in a month you do not update DW SC4 to allow me to choose whether I want to use CSS rules at all + if you do not provide the ability to convert all CSS rules in a page to all inline I dump DW altogether. How's that? Also please check your records and see that I recently purchased your CS4 Master Collection. I am a serious CS4 user and this is a serious challenge.
    With DW CS4 you abandoned DW's character of being a TOOL that lets users decide how to code. Redemption period of 1 months starts.... NOW. Tic toc, tic, toc.

    Hey anygiven. Appreciate your observations. I also feel that Adobe has lost its way as far as the Web is concerned.
    Here's another example from the Dreamweaver Help files. In the second video down on the Dreamweaver CS4 launch screen, called "Live View" (which isn't, BTW), the Adobe talking heads spend a lot of time on how to use a Yahoo calendar widget to create a calender of coming attractions. They make it sound cool and contempo and "next generation."
    As a longtime webmaster with a small client who owns a bar & grill on the Oregon coast, I react to this Adobe video in two ways. First, if my client's competition is using Dreamweaver and following Adobe's directives, I'm absolutely thrilled. Couldn't be happier. Here's why. In the Real World, it's crucial to get search engine traffic to the calendars. But if you do what Abobe suggests in their "Live View" (Not) video, you will get just about zero search engine traffic to your calendar because the search engines can't fully index pages whose content changes in response to user actions! Boiled down, if you do it Adobe's way you'll spend a lot of time and energy to get significantly less functionality in your coming attractions calendar, and thereby deliver less value to your client.
    So in a way, Adobe's Real World Web cluelessness actually helps me by making Adobe-led webmasters less effective and easier to beat. The problem here -- for me and everyone else -- is that is that Adobe and Dreamweaver have no competition any more. I'd be delighted to stand on the shore and watch the grief on the good ship Adobe from the distance, but I can't do that because in the so-called "free market economy" I don't have that fundamental freedom of choice any more.
    I've also begun to wonder about my freedom to express my views here. Last month, I posted a comment noting the basic problem with the Dreamweaver CS4 calendar widget video in the comments section at the bottom of http://tv.adobe.com/watch/inside-the-dreamlabs/dreamweaver-cs4-live-preview/, and it was deleted by Adobe. As of February 22, 2010, the last comment on the page now reads: "Excellent video." That'll take care of the issue! I paid $800 for CS4 (on top of a shelf load of Adobe products going all the way back to 1992) and I logged in, but I don't get to offer an honest (and helpful) comment if it doesn't support the current Adobe dogma?
    I hope that's not the case. I hope there's just some sort of honest misunderstanding here. I also hope that Adobe can appreciate that this is not just empty complaining. I'm not sitting here moving my mouth because it feels good. I'm taking the time out of a very busy morning to offer these comments because as an independent Web developer I believe it's imperative for Adobe to rethink where it's taking Dreamweaver.
    Among the issues crying out for Adobe's reconsideration:
    * Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is a hideously bad implementation of a decent-enough idea. Because of its inherent design flaws, CSS will never be adopted widely UNLESS people don't have a choice. Adobe should stop making Dreamweaver an agent of Web totalitarianism by removing the webmaster's choices as to how he/she constructs their pages. Just say "no" to the Code Nazis.
    * Feature Loss. Adobe needs to start adding features and functionality to Dreamweaver, instead of taking features out as is the case with Dreamweaver CS4. Like the man said, Job One should be to bring Dreamweaver up to the same functionality that FrontPage had 15 years ago in 1995, including all the Web Bot functions. (I realize that it might take a couple of versions to get Dreamweaver up to full FrontPage functionality, but high on my list for the first version upgrade would be a robust threaded discussion group component AND the ability to include blog-like comments at the bottom of the pages.)
    Like to see some positive response here from Adobe to these issues that have been raised by longtime, professional customers...

  • CSS to inline styles

    I never thought I'd be asking this EVER. But, I need to
    convert CSS styles to inline styles. Can this be done in DW or does
    it need to be done by hand?

    Here's what I do. I create the page using an embedded
    stylesheet. When I'm
    ready to publish, I copy the embedded stylesheet into the
    body of the page
    (immediately below the <body> tag). That has worked
    pretty fine for me.

  • ASDocs - Preventing style and tags removing from HTML

    Hi,
    I am using Flex 4 ASDoc
    When I write in my comments:
    <span class="myClass">whatever</span>
    entire tag including text is removed (myClass is present in style.css)
    When I write:
    <span style="color: #FF0000;">whatever</span>
    style attribute is removed.
    I have a feeling this has something to do with xslts and other setting. Can someone point me to the files where changes can be made so that custom styles and classes are not processed/removed?
    Thank you.

    bump it up.

  • Mysterious FM- RH style mapping override with span tag

    I have been working in a super clean FM and RH project that is has one to one mappings for all my styles in the FM to same named styles in RH, just to be sure I do not mess up. Still, though, I seem to get a mystery mapping.  For my bullets and lists, RH is adding a span tag with font set to Times Roman.  I cannot find *any* css that has Times Roman. I've checked things like my character tags, my cross reference tags, etc and cannot find a correlation.  Where would this be added if it's not in my FM Format definitions and not in my RH Style definitions. I tried reimporting the book to see if it needed a tickle of the project mappings template but that didn't help.
    I'm attaching some images in hopes someone has ideas. The example does not appear to be times roman in Design view, but in more complex topics it's pretty obvious.
    I have so many hacks for single sourcing now, about ready to give up.
    Got help?
    FM 10
    RH 11

    Thanks for the fast reply Arnis,
    I did not even notice that the span tag ended on the spaces, so it can't be what's causing the odd previews I'm seeing.  So it seems my original question is not well thought out, so I'm going to retest with some other style changes.
    Still, though I'm wanting to follow up on getting rid of the Times tag anyway.  The bullets are always defined as Verdana. Bullet is set to use "Default Font" while BulletLevel2 uses "Bold" (the char def for Bold is also Verdana).  Is there some place I have to map "tabs" to not be Times? I dont think it's the Default Font issue because bullet 2 uses Bold.
    Here are some screenshots.

  • Conditional build tags with character styles and ignored text

    RoboHelp HTML v8.0.2.208
    Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 with 2 GB of RAM
    Output: WebHelp and HTML Help
    I have recently moved my projects from RH HTML X5 to RH HTML 8 and this is when the following problem appeared. I use lots of conditional build tags within the help projects. Some of these tags are for my own use for reference and I combine these with character styles containing a coloured background (highlight) so that they show up in the WebHelp or HTML Help output (e.g. text to identify the software version that the field/feature/text was added, reminders to check details, insertion of bug ID numbers, design document names, etc.). These areas of text are stripped out of the final build for customers by using a conditional build expression.
    What I have noticed is that if a paragraph contains text with a conditional build tag applied AND that tagged text has a character style applied AND an unknown word within the conditional build tag is ignored (with the HTML tag <?rh-ignored text="word_to_be_ignored" ?>), saving the topic, closing it, then re-opening it shows that the conditional build text has stretched to the next conditional build tag, or to the end of the topic if there aren’t any other conditional build tags. This also happens by switching from Design View to HTML View. Note that this doesn’t happen if Ignore All is applied to the unknown word.
    This doesn’t just apply to projects converted from RH X5. I created a new test project in RH8 and the same behaviour was observed. Similar behaviour occurred very occasionally in RH X5 but that seemed to be down to HTML tags being nested incorrectly.
    The largest project contains around 1200 topics and with many hundreds of conditional build text areas this now causes a problem. I’ll probably have to locate every ignored word in an area of conditional text within each project, set it to Ignore All and then manually remove and re-apply the conditional build tags, unless someone can come up with something clever. Can anyone else replicate this and should it be logged as a bug?

    Hi Daggins,
    Thanks - that is good info to have. But as we all agree, that does take away from the point of single-sourcing.
    You aren't misunderstsanding exactly... I am doing all my conditional tagging in FM and it works like a charm in terms of the PDFs that I generate from FM, and even the conditionally tagged text in RH shows/hides correctly. The issue is I am also importing my index and TOC from FM... and even if I have an entire file in FM tagged as conditional (all the text is tagged as conditional, I don't know if you can tag a file as conditional), the file name as a heading it still appears in the RH TOC. There is no text... but in my view it shouldn't appear in the TOC either (it looks like just a broken link when I generate my online help) - this is not ideal.

  • Showing Paragraph and Span styles in TLF

    Hi,
    Can we show Paragrpagh and Span styleNames applied to a TLF text ?
    Something like the image below shows the Style Names in the Red box:
    Thanks.

    TLF doesn't support that natively.  You'd have to add to TLF to build that.  I'd propose adding listeners to the TextFlow for editing and scrolling events and then synchronizing the alternate view of the data.
    Hope that helps,
    Richard

  • Delete span class and closing tag

    I have multiple instances of a span class that I'd like to delete including the closing span tag. E.g., <span class="yy">text</span>. What's the best way to do this?
    Paul

    You can use the Find & Replace tool to find and remove something from the source of the entire local site if you like...
    1. Control/Command + F
    2. Find In: Entire Current Local Site
    3. Search: Specific Tag
    4. Specific tag text field: span
    5. With Attribute: class
    6: = (the small text field next to the = sign): yy
    7. Action: Remove tag & Contents
    8. Click Replace All

  • H:panelGrid and td tag attributes

    Hi,
    I am using h:panelGrid for a static table with just 2 columns and a few rows. My UI designer created two styles for alternating rows. I added following to the panelGrid:
    rowClasses="rowbg1, rowbg2".
    The UI designer does not like the fact that those two styles are added to the tr tag instead of td tag in the generated html code. He wants me to add those to the td tag and add a width= attribute to td tag as well. I could not figure out a way to add the styles to the td tag. If I add the styles to panelGroup, it will be added to the span tag in html code. Anybody has any suggestion?
    Thanks!
    yydd

    The columnClasses attribute of <h:panelGrid> will affect the <td> tag, however, you may not be able to get the effect you want using it.
    The simplest approach is to build the table using HTML inline with your JSF view.

  • SSRS- Span tag with text-align CSS property

    Hi All,
    I hope you can direct me.
    If I use the text box as HTML - Interpret HTML tags as styles, and write the following in it:
    "<p style='text-align: right';>Ghada Naim</p>"
    It works correctly ,but the following do not respond to the style:
    "<span style='text-align: right';>Ghada Naim</span>"
    Please, what is the problem? Is the span tag with  SSRS does not support to text align property or what?
    Thank you,

    Hi GhadaNaim,
    In Reporting Services, the following is a complete list of tags that will render as HTML when defined as placeholder text:
    Hyperlinks: <A HREF>
    Fonts: <FONT>
    Header, style and block elements: <H{n}>, <DIV>, <SPAN>,<P>, <DIV>, <LI>, <HN>
    Text format: <B>, <I>, <U>, <S>
    List handling: <OL>, <UL>, <LI>
    We can know that the <SPAN> tag is supported. Based on my further research, the <span> tag is used to group inline-elements in a document and it provides no visual change by itself. So we couldn’t directly see its respond in report.
    For more information about HTML <span> Tag, please refer to the following document:
    http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_span.asp
    If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • When inserting image how do I force inline CSS not image tags?

    When I insert an image to my page layout it always uses html width= and height= tags
    e.g. <img src="images/wordpress.jpg" width="125" height="112">
    This is driving me nuts
    (I thought these tags were pretty old fashioned for current doctypes. Why does dreamweaver continue to use them?)
    I want inserted images to be shown with inline CSS
    e.g.  <img src="images/wordpress.jpg" style="width:125px; height:112px;">
    I can then more easily add more CSS like padding, floats etc as needed.
    Any ideas how I set this up as a default or quickly convert?
    (I dont really want to add lots of unique image classes to a style sheet)
    many thanks!
    Dreamweaver CS6

    Image height & width values are not deprecated.  Unless you're building a responsive web site, it is usually better to have these attributes stated in the HTML.
    But when I don't want them, I do the following:
    Insert > Image > browse to file...
    On the properties panel, I delete the width and height values, hit Enter.

    Nope. That's not what I'm saying. Regardless of whether
    you're using a
    class or not, if you get an object reference using an ID, you
    can change
    the properties. Consider this example:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"

  • How can I "nest" CSS span tags?

    I have a piece of text to which I want to apply three successive CSS classes, making increasingly broad selections of the text.  (Or, conversely, apply to the broadest span of text and then selectively style smaller subsets of the inner text.)  Either way I try this, the "span" tags do not end up nested.
    For example, I first select a single word and apply CSS style-1 to just the one word.  Next, I select 3 words (one being the word I just styled) and apply CSS style-2 to that.  Finally, I select the entire clause, which contains the 3 styled words, and apply style-3 to that.
    The objective is to have the span tags "nest" -- but when I apply the styles in the Design view using the "Class" selector, the resulting HTML has the span tags starting and stopping for each bit of text, rather than being nested.  Rather than that, I want to end up with the effect below:
    <span class="style-1">a clause <span class="style-2">with <span class="style-3">some</span> words</span> within the clause.</span>
    I can, of course, do this by hand in the Code view but it is very time-consuming.  Is there a way to achieve this in the Design view?

    Are you attempting something like this?
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>Span Tag Nesting</title>
    <style type="text/css">
    .style-1 {
        font-weight:bold;
    .style-2 {
        color:green;
    .style-3 {
        font-style:italic;
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    <span class="style-1">a clause <span class="style-2">with <span class="style-3">some</span> words</span> within the clause.</span>
    </body>
    </html>
    I'm pretty sure you're going to be stuck adding the span tags in by hand. As far as I can tell, there's no way to get DW to nest <span> tags from within Design View. With the way span tags currently work in DW, there is no way for the program to know you want them nested or overwritten when you select an area of text in Design View.
