  • How can I convert a large batch of NEFs to JPGs in one step or action?

How can I convert a large batch of NEFs to JPGs in one step or action?  I'm very new to Lightroom and know almost nothing about it, so I need to know step-by-step.  I've seen online advise about exporting but I don't know what that means - export from where to where?  Can anyone help me?  Thanks!

I suggest you take a little time to watch some tutorials. If you are that new to Lightroom that you don't understand what export means then it would probably be a good idea for you to get some other information as well. If you don't I think you'll find Lightroom can be very confusing. You haven't indicated what version of Lightroom you are using. The link I'm providing you is a series of getting started videos for Lightroom 5. And just about everything in this series will apply to other versions. You will note that there is one video devoted exclusively to exporting images. But I think you really need to watch the whole series.

  • Nikon D5100 and D700, CS5, ACR 6.4.1: not enough memory when I convert many nef in jpg

The discution was ( and is) also here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3781380#3781380

Using ACR from PS3 or PS4, no problems. Using ACR 6.4.1. and making a batch convert, from nef  to jpg ( or to other formats) I receive "not enough memory" sometimes, and all the times when I select reducing noise and lens corrections. It happen also when I try to transform only one nef to jpg.
I have win 7, i7, memory in triple channel, the system on a SSD, the scratch disk of win on another free SSD and the scratch disk for PS ans ACR on another SSD. I have tryed all imaginable settings, and no hope to use the ACR. Old ACR are OK, only this 6.4.1 have a big problem on my system.

  • How to keyword both NEF and JPG files?

I use a Nikon D300 and shoot NEF+JPG. I ingest the files to my hard drive using Downloader Pro and then import them into Lightroom. Lightroom apparently "stacks" the NEF and JPG files together, and the thumbnail is shown as filename.NEF+JPG. When I keyword the files, the keywords are applied only to the XMP sidecar to the NEF file, and not to the JPG files.
While I guess this "NEF+JPG" is called a stack, this appears to be some kind of special stack, as I cannot unstack the images and keyword them separately. Selecting "Stacking->Expand all stacks" does nothing. "Stacking->Unstack" is disabled.
How can I get the keywords applied to the JPG files as well as to the NEF/XMP files?
    Thanks.
    Guy

OK, I found that option and will try it.
What's the best way of recovering the directories I have already imported with NEF+JPG files? I presume I could delete those directories from the LR database and import them again. (I have enabled the option always to write to XMP.)
That would, I hope, give me both NEF and JPG files showing up in LR. Is there an easy way to copy the keywording from each NEF to the corresponding JPG file?
    Thanks.

  • Rate and label both nef and jpg files

Hello everyone, this probably sounds like a silly newbie question, but is there a simple way to rate and label both the nef and jpg files in bridge.
I work on a pc and right now I have to click on the nef file then ctrl click the jpg file then ctrl #(1-9) to rate both. It seems like a lot of work. When I use batch processing to rename my files it processes them both so i get a raw and jpg with the same name, so why not with labels?
I'm trying to create an easy working flow to my folders and pictures. My camera settings are set to raw (nef) and jpg. I like to have access to both incase i need to send out a jpg etc etc.
Can someone point me in the general direction on how to keep my workflow clean and simple and how to affect both files, because this is becoming really tedious!
    Thanks

Well, first of all, it seems to me that you are creating a lot of extra work for yourself by creating your NEF and a JPEG. If any adjustments have to be done then you have to apply to those adjustments to two different images rather than just one. I think it's going a little far, personally, to have a JPEG copy of every image "just in case" you need to send out a JPEG. Why not just create a JPEG from the NEF file when you need one? But it's your workflow and you can do what ever you want.
Yes, I realize my second suggestion didn't solve the problem. But the problem cannot be solved with Bridge, at least the way it is right now. You have to select the images that you want rated. It just seems to me that your are compounding your work by creating both images all the time. If you have a certain need where you need to produce JPEG images in a hurry for someone, I can understand using the feature. But when it is so easy to create JPEG images that have all of the adjustments, I don't understand the need to have a duplicate JPEG of every image. Again, it's your workflow.
You might speed things up a little bit by going into your Bridge preferences and fix it so that you don't have to hold the control key when applying star ratings. Then you can just hit the number and then the arrow keys to move to the next one.
Another very simple method of creating JPEG copies is to use either the Image Processor or Dr. Brown's 1-2-3 processor, which is a free download from his website. Again, I just think you are creating a lot of work for yourself by having JPEG copies of every image. Unless you are an absolute masterful photographer who never has to make any adjustments to your images, you are doubling the amount of postprocessing required. I promise, I won't interfere in this one anymore.

  • Exporting NEF to JPG

Getting very frustrated with Aperture 3.  I have tried it a myriad of ways but I dont under stand how if I select EXPORT, VERSION, JPG, ORIGINAL SIZE, 300DPI to my desktop, I wind up with a 600+kb file from a 14MB NEF file.  Can someone point out what the deal is??  Thanks in advance.

"Original Size" refers to the size of the Photograph and not the file sie - so we're talking length by breadth here. What you want to look at is the Image Quality setting. The Higher the setting, the less compression involved, and so larger file size.
But remember as Jpeg is a compressed, lossy format, the Jpeg will never be the same size as the NEF.

  • Why does my iPhoto export in both NEF and jpg

My requirement is this. I want to export two versions of my photos to disk - one, as JPEG for sharing with family/friends; and two, as RAW to retain my changes for subsequent edits.
When I export an iPhoto Event to disk, I use File -> Export -> 'Current' (to preserve my edits), and it saves some photos as NEF and some as lowercase jpg. I studied a previous thread where iPhoto saved portrait files as jpg - although this is true for some of my photos, it is not entirely true. Within the same event, I have landscape mode photos which have been saved as jpg.
I have checked my exports previous to Mavericks, and none of those exports have this problem. Is this a iPhoto / Mavericks bug like my previous post (where iPhoto would destroy some photos vertically). I'm using iPhoto 09 v8.1.2 (424) on mid 2009 MBP OSX 10.9.3.
    Thanks.

If you export from iPhoto with "Kind > Current", it will export as a JPEG, if you have done any adjustments or modifications at all. The current version will be exported as a  JPEG. If the original has not been touched at all, however, exporting as  "Kind > Current" will export the original RAW file.
If you want to be sure to export as a JPEG for sharing with your family, use "File > Export , Kind > JPEG, Full Size, to be on the safe side.

  • Weird and serious LR bug: jpg + nef becomes jpg + jpeg!

ok, this sounds very strange, but I'm experiencing some serrious issues with LR 1.1. I've done some shootings with raw (nef) + jpg with my Nikon D200 camera.
I import to LR using the default setting where LR keeps track of both files, but only displays the raw-file (but showing the text: "nef + jpeg" when hovering a thumbnail).
    So far so good.
But lately I've experienced some bad beaviour.
When browsing some of these folders with nef + jpegs in LR, suddenly LR starts to work threw the thumbnails, regenerating them a lot brighter (I'm NOT talking about the initial small "adjustment" LR does to raw files).
And when hovering the affected images, it displays "jpg + jpeg" (!) instead of the usual "nef + jpg" message!
I'm I the first experiencing this??
I tried to manually synchronize the affected folder to get it back to the right condition. It didn't work succesfully (reimporting the files, but not grouping jpeg and raw together, and affecting the jpeg files with wrong adjustments). Only fix seemes to be: remove all the images from the folder in LR, reimport the images, and do all keywording, adjustments and final preparations for the images ALL over again.
None of the files seemes to be damaged or corrupt. I've not changed any folder or file outside of lightroom.
Because I have to reimport all images when this happens (experienced it with two or three folders now), I loose all my adjustments and work with the raw-files. Thats totally unacceptable, and I hope there is a sollution to this.
    thanks for any help!
    regards

I too have come across this serious bug, which also occurs in LR 1.2 (see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c051b42 ). I reported it on Adobe's bug reporting web page. It occurs when a folder is moved within LR and is difficult to recover from (the raw filenames in the lrcat are changed to .jpg). I have not had a problem moving selected photographs from one folder to another - just moveing an entire folder in the folder panel. My advice is not to move any folder within LR, move folders outside first, then go back to LR where the moved folder will be shown as missing (in red). Right click on it and use locate missing folder to restore the moved folder.

  • Time to export/save one D2X NEF to JPG Aperture vs. Bridge/ACR

15" PB, 1.5 Ghz, 1.5 GB RAM, running Firefox, Entourage, while each app is running test.
Single D2X NEF in an Aperture project:
-No sharpening applied, export to JPG 11 seconds
-Any sharpening applied, export to JPG 29 seconds
Single D2X in a folder in Bridge, open in ACR
    under Bridge:
-Any sharpening or not, save to JPG 15 Seconds
Note, while Aperture exports, the entire app is tied up. Bridge does the saving in the background, which allows you to continue working in Bridge/CS2

I have not run that test, but I did do Aperture batch versus CS(1) batch...
Basically, when I'm batching from CS RAW -> JPEG, my dual G5 turns 12 images per minute. When I "export" from Aperture (which might as well be a "batch," it's doing the same function), I get a little over 13 images per minute.
Frankly, I almost never sharpen when coming from RAW. I prefer to make a highly selective sharpening pass later after going to JPEG, sharpening only those that need it the most. I'm not a big believer in sharpening, due to fact that I have no control over how image will be resized, and sharpening prior to a significant resizing is pointless in my experience... and despite all the talk about how digital images are soft compared to film (due to the built-in sensor filter) I don't really buy that. I don't remember film being so dang sharp.... with the L series glass I'm using and 8.2 megapixels, this stuff looks as freakin' sharp as 35mm film ever did to me... now I will concede that medium format film has a certain sharpness advantage, but 35mm??? Maybe Kodachrome on a tripod, but probably not an ISO 400 print film hand held at a wedding reception... I digress.
Now I'm going to go run your sharpness test to see what I can see, seeing as how I finally upgraded to CS2 this week.

  • Converting .NEF to .JPG color problem

When I convert a .NEF picture to .JPG the color is significantly desaturated.  I know JPG is highly compressed from NEF and figured the color loss was a result of the compression, but then I found out I can open the JPG back into Photoshop and the normal color is back.
Alos, I can convert .NEF to .PNG and the color stays normal.
I am trying to get into taking pictures in the Raw format, but this issue is frustrating me.
I would really appreciate any information about this problem.

One last hing to add, since you did not mention how you determined there is a difference between png and jpg. I am going to assume you saw the differences using a web browser, since those formats are common for that app.
Not all browsers treat those file formats the same. Some recognize the color profile and others don't. some may reconize for one format and not the other as well. So to verify it would be best to load them back into photoshop to see if there is a diffence. Also it can make a difference if you use the normal save or save for web as save for web does strip the meta data. I am assuming it strips the color profile as well, but I did not test this so I could easily be wrong. Seams to me I recall CS4 adding an option to specify the color profile, but again I could be wrong.
But if you need the color profile to be correct these are things you will need to verify.

  • Photoshop elements 9 (MacOS) export .Nef as .jpg

    hi all,
I've newly changed to an apple and now wondering where the "Export" functionality is gone...
Under windows I could select multiple pictures (.nef - Nikon raw format) and select menue "Data" --> "export"...
How can I save / generate .jpg copies from my corrected .nef files. The "Save" or bether "Save as..." menue is disabled.
I'm sure that can't be that difficult - hopefully!
Thanks for any hints and tips
    Christian

    hi anf....
the mac version of Organzier and PSE does not let u copy or duplicate the multiple picture files and them move them around at the same time in big single groups.
i had the same problem when i started using PSE and solved it by using the BRIDGE program to do that stuff (duplicates etc.) and them import the new files into PSE all together >

  • How to convert from NEF to JPG not dng Lr 3.3

Using Lr 3.3 for the first time. It downloaded my picture files as nef fine but then it wants to convert to dng? It does not give me the option to save as jpg? Some files I want as jpg... Can you tell me what needs to be done to acheive this.
    Thanks,

You first have to import the raw files into LR then you can make adjustments in the Quick Develop tab in the Library Module or in the Develop Module.
You can then use the export function from the file menu to create your image file, tiff, psd or jpeg. The option in the import function to convert the raw file to DNG (raw format) does not create an image file it is still the raw data.

  • Photoshop CS und JPG

Was macht Photoshop CS beim Speichern als JPG?

I restarted Photoshop several times and now ists working correctly. Sorry, I should have tested that first before posting here :-(

  • SW-RAW-Dateien als tif und jpg heller

    Hi,
