Neo2 FR Q6600 only using single core

After finally getting my system running I noticed that my new q6600 was not giving me anywhere near the performance I expected.  It's a little bit fater than my old p4 3.6Ghz POS.  Windows device manager does show 4 different CPUs, but task manager only has one graph and none of my audio programs allow me to turn on multiple CPU support (they should with a multicore processor.)  I also notice that the BIOS (1.2) does not show me the Hyper Threading Option.  Also, I have set;
(IO)APIC = Enabled
MPS Table Version = 1.4
there is NO APIC option in the bios, only (IO)APIC
Where have I gone wrong?
Running XP SP3
EDIT: CPU-Z only show 1 core, 1 thread

No, does not, it has "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface".  How would I enable ACPI Multiprocessor PC?  Will it require a re-install of XP?  I have now updated the BIOS to 1.6.
Right click on ""Advanced Configuration and Power Interface", and select update then pickup manually "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" from the List.
If its not listed or there is a troubles updating, you can try to force it via that way:
1. Changing HAL require changes in corespond kernels too. Each HAL use different kernels.
2. The HAL file along with corespond kernels need to match with exact XP version installed. Example:
If the user is using SP2(most popular and recent), we must use HAL & kernels version for SP2 too.(else will not gonna work)
So let's comment here again:
"expand d:\i386\halmacpi.dl_ c:\windows\system32"
If we use SP2, we need to use correct version of halmacpi.dll (in the string above its older version), we can get it from here:
expand d:\i386\sp2.cab -F:halmacpi.dll c:\windows\system32  /* I assume that we have XP SP2 installation disk */
or we can use other location, which will no need to have XP installation disk, XP is keep a copy of files locally, we can use this one instead too:
expand c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab -F:halmacpi.dll c:\windows\system32
If we use SP3, we should use sp3 versions of halmacpi.dll,(and kernels which will be described below) e.g. in the string above we must replace sp2.cab with sp3.cab
OK, think that part should be clear, the next stage updating the kernels for our chosen HAL, ofc. we will follow the rule 1 they to match with our version used.
"ACPI Multiprocessor PC" is using those kernels: ntkrnlmp.exe, ntkrpamp.exe which must be renamed and overwritten to ===> ntoskrnl.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe in %systemroot%\system32 directory.
/* MS$ is using the same names for kernels, but in reality they are different for each HAL... */
So our complete scenario to successfully change(force "ACPI Multiprocessor PC") will look in that way:
expand c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab -F:halmacpi.dll c:\windows\system32
expand c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab -F:ntkrpamp.exe c:\windows\system32
expand c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab -F:ntkrnlmp.exe c:\windows\system32
or better going to c:\windows\driver cache\i386\    folder 1st, to type lesser by:
cd c:\windows\driver cache\i386
and
expand sp2.cab -F:halmacpi.dll c:\windows\system32
expand sp2.cab -F:ntkrpamp.exe c:\windows\system32
expand sp2.cab -F:ntkrnlmp.exe c:\windows\system32
clearing the way for new HAL and kernels and making backup of current one in same time by:
ren ntkrnlpa.exe ntkrnlpa.old
ren ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.old
ren hal.dll hal.old
then naming new HAL file with kernels to expected by OS with:
ren halmacpi.dll hal.dll
ren ntkrpamp.exe ntkrnlpa.exe
ren ntkrnlmp.exe ntoskrnl.exe
reboot PC by:
echo g=FFFF:0000|debug /* or just hit reset key...*/
In short to be more clear what we have changed:
To force "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", we need to overwrite:
extract & rename & replace(overwrite) Halmacpi.dll to ---> %systemroot%\system32\hal.dll
extract & rename & replace(overwrite) ntkrnlmp.exe to --> %systemroot%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
extract & rename & replace(overwrite) ntkrpamp.exe  to --> %systemroot%\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
Just we must be sure that source files will match with actual XP OS version, etc:
If we use SP2, we must get source files(Halmacpi.dll, ntkrnlmp.exe, ntkrpamp.exe) from %windir%\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab,
If we use SP3 we must get source files from %windir%\driver cache\i386\sp3.cab,
If we use SP1 we must %windir%\driver cache\i386\driver.cab
If we use XP without SP we must get the source files from %windir%\driver cache\i386\ /* they exist there but compressed, which can be done by same way with expand command)
Then just to rename files and replace into %systemroot%\system32 folder as followed:
Halmacpi.dll to ---> %systemroot%\system32\hal.dll
ntkrnlmp.exe to --> %systemroot%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
ntkrpamp.exe  to --> %systemroot%\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
We can use XP installation disk recovery console, we can use some DOS version which NTFS mounted which have write ability to NTFS, or just second OS installed to replace files from there.
Have used the procedure above xx times working every time without single issue
"Will it require a re-install of XP?"
As last resort yes.

  • Adobe Media Encoder only using single core of CPU (core parking has already been disabled and did not solve the problem)

I only edit videos every few months and the last time I edited a video was around 6-9 months ago.  At that time, I noticed AME was only using a single core of the CPU and contacted Adobe who instructed me to disable core parking, which worked.  After disabling core parking AME used 100% of all 12 logical cores to process the video and all was good.  Then last week, I decided to edit another video and noticed AME was very slow and checked and it was again only using a single core to process the video, but core parking is still turned off.  By slow I mean that a 10 minute video with the lens distortion correction preset and one video transition effect is estimated to take nearly 3 hours to complete.  For comparison, the GoPro software processed the same clip with the same effects in 20 minutes.  Also, through troubleshooting with Adobe over the last few days, I have also tried downloading previous versions of the software but the prior versions have the same issue.
The video I'm trying to edit was shot on a GoPro Hero 4 Black with 1080p Wide at 60 frames per second.  The default video format for GoPro is .mp4.   The output settings I'm using when I export from Premiere Pro to AME are H.264 with the YouTube 1080p HD.
    My system:
    ASUSSabertooth X79
Intel core i7 4930k (6 physical cores, 12 logical cores)
    16GB DDR3 Quad channel RAM
    Samsung 830 SSD 128GB
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (not CUDA compatible, I know)
Please ask if you need any additional information to help solve this problem.

This has been driving me CRAZY... so going over the message boards from 2 to 5 am this morning I found the best explanation I have seen.   The problem is that Adobe Creative Cloud is NOT "Processor Group Aware".  Windows parses any more than 36 cores into "Processor Groups" and while the Pro version of Windows 7 & 8 can handle 256 threads they have to spread them across multiple processor groups.

  • Q6600 only shows 2 cores on the G41M4-F motherboard

    Hi peeps
I wonder if some one can shine some light on this one.
I have a G41M4-F Board which was running a Core 2 duo (E6300) with no issues. I have since replaced the CPU with the Q6600 but according to the Task Manager and Hardware Monitor, the system is only using 2 cores.
I have tried pretty much everything I can think off...
    I rolled back the BIOS
    Cleared CMOS a dozen times
Uninstalled the CPU from the Device Manager (which does show all 4 cores)
    what more can I do????

run msconfig, and check number of cores.

  • CPU Multi core processor only using 1 core

I have a 12 core CPU which works fine when rendering in Premier Pro utilizing all 12 cores but when I render in Media Encoder it only uses 1 core. This is a recent event that has occurred recently, has anybody got an idea what is happening?

    hanugro,
I did some searching, and the processor you want, is not available in many places.
Even TigerDirect.com doesn't even list this processor. And, it must be VERY EXPENSIVE ! ( I'm guessing it will be $1,500 ? ), the one you list has a 1333 MHz bus speed !!
This is the most expensive processor they have listed:

    It is currently $579 ( as of today, Feb.14, 2008 )

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 - AME export back to using only a single core

I've had this problem before (as have others) and it seemed to go away for a while.  It's back.  Basically the problem is that exports from PP CC 2014 take much longer when sent through AME than if they are done within PP itself.  The time problem is the result of AME only using one CPU for the export whereas export within PP uses all 8 (in my case).  I've tried all the hints I could find (turn off parking in the registry and make sure the "performance" power option is selected) but nothing works now.  Basically I have to avoid AME totally.  It doesn't matter what type of output format I've chosen or what effects I have.
My system is an up to date Windows 7 system with 16GB and a CUDA-compatible NVIDIA graphics card.  Plenty of hard drives, etc.
I believe this problems been around for quite a while.  I don't know what made it come back for me unless it was some recent Adobe or Microsoft patch.

I've a similar system, and renders/exports of any kind never use more than 29% of CPU. Getting frustrated. Got my builder coming to take a peek.

    Hi, friends!
I´m using Logic 9 Pro, and i have a problem: It is only using one of the 4 cores of my computer (Mini mac).
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks!!

  • Quicktime X only uses one core on a C2D

On my mac mini C2D activity monitor shows that quicktime X refuses to use more then one core which makes hd movies look very laggy and bad. What can I do to make it use both cores?

QuickTime itself limits to a single processor/core in most cases.
Worst is that quicktime is slow to render movies.
I hope Apple will rewrite quicktime so it supports Open CL and Grand Central Dispatch.

  • Using single core is as hot as two core

    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can explain this to me? I switch my MBP to using only 1 core, but the core temperature remains the same as when it's using 2 core. Does this make sense? I would expect the operation temperature would drop maybe 10-20 degrees, but it remains hovering on 80+ celsius.
[ ps: my MBP fan's blown and the repair would take up to 3 weeks. I'm trying to live with only an external notebook cooler for a couple of months because I'm at a critical stage of work and can't be without my computer]

this is totally normal. first of all, two cores work in a more efficient way. when one is disabled, the other one has to work harder!
you can try latest speedit kernel module (http://www.increw.com/speedit.html) . it will decrease the cpu freq. to 1 Ghz which will drop the temperature down a lot. you can also use external fan for cooling it.

  • T61 only using one core under Windows XP?

    Hi,
I have a T61 that came preinstalled with Vista but we reinstalled XP Pro SP 3 on it since we need to work with software which doesn't work with Vista.
When looking in Windows Task Manager, it only shows me one core. I don't know whether the Vista Task Manager did this too (never had a chance to see it before it was reinstalled). Also CPU-Z can only identify one core, even though it correctly identifies the CPU as being a Merom T7300 CPU.
Could it be some power-saving option somewhere that is keeping the second core deactivated? Note that I don't have the Thinkpad softwares installed, since they didn't provide any functionality that worked better than Windows XP itself.

I have somewhere seen a setting to disable the second core as a power saving feature, but for the life of me I can't remember where, and I don't have my T61 on me to look at right now.  I'm thinking it was part of the thinkvantage power settings program, but I could be wrong.

  • Premiere & Media Encoder only using all cores of only 1 CPU

After following the recommendation of the Adobe White Paper on Premiere and Media Encoder I purchased a dual Xeon machine.  It has dual 2699 v3 processors each with 18 physical cores. Both Premiere and Media encoder will max out 36 cores (18 physical and 18 Virtual) but only on one CPU, the other CPU sits idle.  Everything I read is that Premiere and Media Encoder are multi-processor not just multi-core aware.  When I run Cinebench I get 100% across both processors (72 cores maxed out).  I do a ton of 6K Red work and I bought this machine to speed up my rendering times but so far I would have been better off with a single CPU machine as Premiere and Media Encoder seem to only run on CPU at a time.  Please HELP!!!!

  • Bind only using 1 core

Recently started using bind as one of our dns servers, and according to graphs on our cacti server, only 1 core gets used. It goes up to 10% cpu usage while the rest sit idle at 0% and sometimes a small spike.
Now on a ubuntu dns server which is a dual core, both cores go equally up in cpu usage, about 5% on both.
Also added the setting -n 4 to /etc/conf.d/named to see if that would make a difference but doesn't look like it.
Is there something different with bind on ubuntu that is missing on bind on archlinux?
    Ubuntu: version: 9.5.0-P2
    Archlinux: version: 9.6.0-P1 (version.bind/txt/ch disabled)

Actually figured out afterwards I can get the current one from: http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/b … D?view=log

  • Aperture only using single CPU

    Hi,
I've noticed when working with Aperture that it will max out either one or the other CPU on my machine, it never seems to use two at a time. This creates a problem for me, as every time one of the CPUs hits max, I get SBOD for 10 or so seconds. Opening properties on smart folder that contains no pictures takes about 30 seconds, etc, all running on single CPU as opposed to two. I have Dual 2GHz G5 (the model with PCI-X slots), 3gb ram (1.7gb free with aperture running) and ATI Radeon 9600. I know the GPU could be better, but I don't see how this would affect the CPU problem.
Does anyone else see this happen on their machine or is something screwy with my box? If yes, I'm going to submit a bugreport ...
    thanks,
    mayo

OK, I think this is a bug in Aperture. This is approximately how it goes ...
When I do stacking/deleting in Library > All Images (about 3500 images) after import (even if I quit and re-open Aperture many times) Aperture takes long time to do the stacks or deletes and also shows some other problems. Only one CPU would get maxed out and I get BSOD all the time.
One of the other problems I've mentioned is that the moment a stack is made or a image in a stack is promoted or demoted the stack gets moved to the bottom of the image list and subsequently moved back in place. My view is scrolled all the way to the bottom as well, and the scroll bar returns to the original location, however my view doesn't return back to the top.
Now, I've selected all images in Library > All Images and made a album out of it. In this album, I can do stacking deleting without maxing out the CPU ... It will use both CPUs and low usage (30 or so %) and the stack creation is almost immediate. Interesting, I thought, so I went back to Library > All Images and tried the same, it behaved the same way as in the album I just created. It was snappy, no view moving (as I've described above). I deleted the album, quit Aperture, all is fine and other things are quite faster as well.
I've managed to replicate this by creating new Libraries and import the data the same way I initially imported images from iPhoto. (I did my initial import from iPhoto). Does anyone else care to experiment? If no I'm going to report it to BugReport.

  • Quad Core MBP saving battery life by only using two cores

I am trying to use my MBP 8,2 with two of my four cores shut down in order to preserve battery life. Is this at all possible through 3rd party apps?

This whole thread reminds me of some of the nutty ideas American carmakers came up with during one of the first gasoline shocks back in the 70's. Don't remember whether it was Chrysler or GM, hellbent on keeping their huge gas guzzler engines, came up with the idea of disabling one or more cylinders when "not needed". A totally Rube Goldberg-ian contraption ensued, more prone to failure than any potential gas it may have saved.
And while on topic and following Señor Grant's lead, last Wedneday decided to take my MBP to the edge. 8% battery charge remaining, that is. That took the whole of 7:15, while running at 50% backlight, WiFi, MS Word and two browsers going (all four cores, too). Then on Thursday 10.7.4 + Safari 5.1.7 came out. So, back to the drawing board on Friday. 7:20 and 6% remaining, got tired of waiting and all this mine is bigger than yours BS and plugged it back in...

  • Why single core only on a MBP13 Core i5 w/ VMware Fusion + Win7 BootCamp Partition

    1. When I boot into OS X and launch VMware Fusion running Windows7 on a 2011 MacBook Pro 13" w/ Core i5:
I see only a single core in-use in the Windows 7 CPU performance widget running VMware Fusion using Windows 7 installed in BootCamp Partition?
    2. When I boot directly into Windows 7 using the BootCamp Partition on the same MacBook Pro as above:
I see all four cores in-use in the Windows 7 CPU performance widget. Why doesn't VMware fusion use all four virtual cores that the MAcBook Pro 13" Core i5 provides? Core i5 has 2 physical cores but 4 hyper-threads which appear as 4 virtual cores to the OS as I understand it.
Is this expected behavior for this config? Why can't VMware Fusion on OS X see all four virtual cores? I see that the CPU submenu is greyed out under the VM Settings menu? So it appears CPU settings can't be changed for a running VM instance?  Any suggestion and pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    Fuji Apple Pie

I think your i5 is 2-cores with 4-threads (the name virtual core for HT is just a way to get 20-35% more per physical core).
And one physical core has to be assigned to Mac.
If you had the i7 4-core / 8-threads, I can see more load balancing.
