Neophyte Asking Basic Questions

I must be thick - can't find answers to some really basic questions:
1. To distribute Compressor tasks, is Qmaster and Compressor required on all participating Macs?
2. Are they required to be exactly the same version across the participating Macs?
3. Are they required to have unique serial numbers? (I tried to start Compressor on a second Mac that had been installed from FCS 5.1 Crossgrade package that resides on original Mac - all that was on the second Mac was Compressor and Qmaster - Qmaster didn't seem to mind, but Compressor gave me a warning message and terminated....)
4. Assuming the above issues have been resolved as required, does Compressor have to be started on the "Services Only" Mac in order to assist in the processing?
Again, my apologies for the level of these questions....
Stan

1. Yes, plus, if you're sending Compressor tasks from Final Cut Pro, all computers in the cluster are required to have Final Cut.
2. It depends, but usually, yes, all versions need to be the same. Qmaster 2.0 and 2.1 are not compatible with each other. 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 would most likely work. together.
3. I've always been working with Volume Licenses here, so I can't verify this, but as far as I know Final Cut Studio programs won't operate if an identical serial number is operating on the same network. As far as recieving tasks, I'm not sure serial number checking is done.
4. The answer to this question can be found in the Distributed Processing Setup Manual (open Apple Qadministrator -> Help -> Distributed Processing Setup), but in a simple answer, no, a QuickCluster, Services and Controller, and Services only computer can all be configured into a cluster (I'm pretty sure).

  • Possible way to prevent basic questions being asked repeatedly

    hi,
could this be a possible way to prevent basic questions being asked repeatedly (and to encourage search before post)  (may be atleast for newcomers to the forum, to minimize one-liner questions).
when a user tries to post the question, as the user types or in the preview screen or before he clicks on the submit button, the SCN should show the similar questions/threads (or atleast threads with exactly the same text) asked/discussed before.
then the forum user might click on the links, instead of posting a new one, as the answer could be readily available in existing threads.
this functionality i have seen in yahoo answers.

I also think it is a cool idea, but unfortunately the "no brainers" are a small group in my experience and will not be detered by this.
We are using a new secret weapon in the past weeks against repeat offenders. Please use the Abuse Report button to report such basic questions when the person is "hard of hearing".
As a side note, also consider that some people are not fluent in English. Or even have no English language skills and use enterpreters. That is of course no reason to be a pain and break the rules (cross-posting, etc) but it does explain isolated misunderstandings.
I once called a repeat offender on the phone because he posted his telephone number in the forums. He could hardly speak any English at all, let alone write it...

  • Basic question regarding SSIS 2010 Package where source is Microsoft Excel 97-2005 and there is no Microsoft office or Excel driver installed in Production

    Hi all,
I got one basic question regarding SSIS 2010 Package where source is Microsoft Excel 97-2005. I wanted to know How this package works in production where there is no Microsoft office or Excel driver installed. To check that there is excel driver installed
or not, I followed steps: Start-->Administrative Tools--> Data Sources(ODBC)-->Drivers and I found only 2 drivers one is SQL Server and another one is SQL Server Native Client 11.0.
Windows edition is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, Service Pack-1 and System type is 64-bit Operating System.
    We are running this package from SQL Server Agent and using 32-bit (\\Machine_Name\d$\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe /FILE "\\Machine_Name\d$\ Folder_Name\EtL.dtsx" /CONFIGFILE "\\Machine_Name\d$\Folder_Name\Config.dtsConfig"
/MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E) to run this package. I opened the package and tried to find out what connection we have used and found that we have used "Excel Connection Manager" and ConnectionString=Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data
Source=F:\Fares.xls;Extended Properties="EXCEL 8.0;HDR=YES"; and source is ‘Excel Source’
I discussed with my DBA and He said that SSIS is having inbuilt Excel driver but I am not convinced.
Could anyone please clear my confusion/doubt?
I have gone through various links but my doubt is still not clear.

How Can I Get a List of the ODBC Drivers that are Installed on a Computer?

Thanks Shiven:) If Answer is Helpful, Please Vote

    Hi S Kumar Dubey,
In SSIS, the Excel Source and Excel Destination natively use the Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider which is installed by SQL Server. The Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider deals with .xls files created by Excel 97-2003. To deal with .xlsx files created by
Excel 2007, we need the Microsoft ACE OLEDB Provider. SQL Server doesn’t install the Microsoft ACE OLEDB Provider, to get it we can install the
2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components or
Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable or Microsoft Office suit.
The drivers listed in the ODBC Data Source Administrator are ODBC drivers not OLEDB drivers, therefore, the Excel Source/Destination in SSIS won’t use the ODBC driver for Excel listed in it by default. On a 64-bit Windows platform, there are two versions
of ODBC Data Source Administrator. The 64-bit ODBC Data Source Administrator is C:\Windows\System32\odbcad32.exe, while the 32-bit one is C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe. The original 32-bit and 64-bit ODBC drivers are installed by the Windows operating system.
By default, there are multiple 32-bit ODBC drivers and fewer 64-bit ODBC drivers installed on a 64-bit platform. To get more ODBC drivers, we can install the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components or Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable.
Besides, please note that 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components only install 32-bit ODBC and OLEDB drivers because it only has 32-bit version, but the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable has both 32- bit version and 64-bit
    version.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Basic Questions of ABAP programming

    Hi Experts
I am new for ABAP programming. I wants to know some basic about ABAP. I have done 2 months ABAP course from a institute. They give me training on 4.7 IDES ver. Please give the answers of following questions.
1.Is there big difference between 4.7 and 6.0 Ecc ver in ABAP programming point of view?
2.for Traing purpose Should I install the full verson of SAP or there is any dummy software?
3.SAP Netweaver knowledge is must for ABAP programing?
    4. When we install SAP 4.7 IDES version then all the modules will avialable or Only ABAP?
    Thanks
    Best Regards
    Jitender

    Hello,
For your own practice you can download the free version of SAP Netweaver ABAP in the downloads section of SCN. This is only for ABAP development. You wont find many of the stadard tables and functionalities with in it. IDES should be containing all the modules. But again that depends on the licesnse with which you are provided.
Your questions have no relevance from the ABAP technical point of view except the first one which is a basic question and should be asked here as per the forum rules. Thats the reason why you were suggested to read the forum rules.
For any queries of the trial version ABAP have a look at this forum

  • GRIR basic question

I have a question on GRIR.
Say a co buys issues PO of material ( eventually becomes fixed asset ) 145 units @ 15$.
latter they pack this and say packing cost is added ( thru another ) @ 20$ each unit. ( the packing cost not be capitalized).
Add 6% sales tax separately for items as well as packing.
Now the invoice comes with all item cost + packing + sales tax.
Please enlighten me the GRIR accounting path of this transaction. The reason I am asking this question is we have a big cr balance in our GRIR account and my gut feeling is that this packing cost + it's sales tax is creating problem as the vendor is invoicing aggregating the sales tax. I want to understand the basic flow of accounting entry first. Another point, we buy the product ,store it and resell it. Some item may be owned by us  ( fixed asset )  and some item may be sold  (expense ).
    Thanks in advance

Do you perhaps have 'Primary Only' selected? I would suspect that as the culprit. See:
    http://tech.kateva.org/2008/03/apertures-peculiar-selection-behavior.html
Shift selecting, for me, acts as you describe in the online tutorial...I see the multiple photos for comparison.

  • Basic questions. Accessing documents

    Hello,
I have few very basic questions. I don't see an obvious way to access documents from within any CS6 app. Is this something that should be possible, or do files have to be uploaded/downloaded from the browser interface? I downloaded and installed trial versions of the Master Collection. When CS6 became available, it seemed to know I was a member because it no longer prompts me to "continue trial." However, several apps show as not installed in the download manager accessable from within CC.
Also, what does the subscription include as far as website publishing. Five sites is what the literature says. Is this five trial sites. I have a site I setup as a test. It's accessable through xxxx.businesscatalyst.com, but when I click "push to live" I am promoted to choose a monthly plan. I really don't need the service, but just curious what level is included.
Also, also, while I can access the creative cloud and it shows 20gb and all apps, my account shows nothing about being a Creative Cloud member.
    Sorry for these basic questions.
    -Hugh

    Hi David,
Getting a lot of email time with you. Thank you for being helpful. I have one Adobe ID. Answers to your questions below:
For accessing documents within the CS6 apps, you could go through cloud storage if you wanted to transfer between locations or computers but saving your work to the computers HD is the same as past versions.
OK, I must be dense. I don't see an obvious way to transfer. Don't need a full tutorial, just point me to a menu item or window tab or anyplace. I'll figure it out from there.
I haven't tested using the Master Collection myself but I would be curious if you launch one of the products which show as not installed within the Adobe Application Manager window does it show as being a trial still? Does just launching make any difference?
No, the apps launch without the 30-day trial notice. Everything seems to be working normally except for not showing as installed through the CC site.
I did install the Master Collection trial Thursday night expecting the launch of CC to be delayed or on California time (East Coast here). Launched a few apps before discovering access (actually a little before midnight--good job). It seems the apps I launched before the service went live are the apps that display as not installed. But not 100-percent sure.
For the website question, I was wondering if it might be because you weren't signed in to Muse with your Adobe ID, it should be the same one as Creative Cloud.
I was promoted to login at the Business Catalyst site from the "manage" link in CC (same with typekit--every time I access)--same (and only) Adobe ID I have. I was also logged in through Muse. I'm sure of that.
Did you receive an email saying that your subscription service was activated? Are you logged into the Creative Cloud website with the same Adobe ID? It almost sounds like you are not signed in or the subscription is not activated?
Other than a few phone calls and online chats with folks at Adobe, this forum is the only (semi) official notification I've recieved. When I called the Customer Service number, the rep told me it would automatically convert (which it seems to have done since I can access and download). But the rep (nore online chat sessions) ask for my Adobe ID.
I checked my spam folder, etc., to make sure nothing was missed from Adobe. Nothing received. As an FYI, I did get the auto notice telling me I was charged for the monthly Design Premium 5.5 subscription on May 10 (just like clockwork).
Also try clearing your browser cache, closing and reopening the browser, oddly enough I've heard that can make a difference in some cases.
I'll try that. Also read elsewhere that uninstalling and reinstalling has helped with other issues. Also read about deleting config files to cause CS6 to reset. Haven't tried it. Would like to know my subsciption status first.
OK, so another basic question, How do I activate my subscription. Call customer service again? Some place on the website? Friends at Adobe ;-)
    Thanks much.
    -Hugh
BTW, I'm very happy with CS6 so far. Being super productive since Friday night. Not getting much sleep, but having a lot of fun learning/developing some pretty cool stuff.

  • Basic Questions About CSM

    Hi,
We have a CSM installed in a 6513 chassis working as our load balancer for web servers. I have a few basic questions:
    1. The current default configuration of probes on our switch indicates 2 minutes interval, 3 consecutive errors before marking real server failure and 5 minutes between probes of failed server. This setting results in 10-12 minute switch over delay in case one server fails.
In one of the Cisco papers I read that the default for these parameters in CSM is 8 seconds, 2 retries and 5 seconds, respectively.
My question is what is the default settings for probe parameters and is there any recommendation for a optimal settings? (I am going to use 1min, 3, 15seconds resulting 0.5 to 1.5 minutes delay and want to make sure there is no concerns with that)
    2. Does the sticky timeout affect the switch over delay time? My understanding is that sticky timeour applies to the normal condition when all legs are up and in case of a failure, the traffic will switch over regardless of an existing active sticky session. Is this correct?
    3. What is the exact definition of a "connection" in a load balancer? Is there any way to estimate or predict the number of connections for a specific traffic load (e.g. number of connection per user)?
    Thanks for your response,
    Ali

There is an ASK THE EXPERT session currently, if you have more questions, please join us there.
    Regarding your current questions :
1/ The default for an icmp probe is 120sec, 3 retries and 300sec for failed.
You can use whatever values you think is necessary for your environment.
However, you need to remember that a probe generates traffic and each probe require process CPU time to send and receive.
With a lot of servers you probably want to avoid low frequency values.
I think your suggested value of 1 minute is ok.
2/ the sitcky timeout does not affect failover.
However, you should be aware that if a server goes dowm, the CSM will send NEW connections to the other servers. But active connection will stay with this server even if down. To change this behavior use the 'failaction purge' command.
3/ A connection is a flow. It is defined by a SRC IP, DST IP, protocol, SRC PORT, DST PORT.
Within a connection you can send 2 bytes or 2 Gig.
So, it is difficult to link the 2 values.
ie: when you load a webpage, if you are using http 1.0 you open 1 connection for every object (text, gif, banner, ...) but with http 1.1 you can download all the same objects in a single connection.
    Hope this helps.
    Gilles.

  • Basic Questions related EHPs for SEM

    Hi Guys,
I've some basic questions related to EHPs: -
    1. If we don't mean to implement any of the new functionalities does it make any sense to implement EHP? In other words do EHPs also have some general improments other than the functionalities which can be specifically activated?
    2. If we just activate a functionality and don't implement/ use it can there be any negative impact?
    3. In case of a pure technical upgrade from SEM 4.0 to SEM 6.0 which EHP would be recommended?
    4. Is there a quick way to find all relevant notes in EHPn which are related to corrections for EHPn-1?
    Thanks in advance,
    -SSC

    HI,
If you see some of my older posts I have had many issues with certain features of the EHP2 functionality but that doesn't mean I would recommned against it.
    BCS 6 EHPs 3 & 4  (BCS 6.03 / 6.04) - enhancement packs worth implementing?
BCS 6 EHP 2 (BCS 6.02) - activation of enhancement pack
My recommendation is to implement the EHPs but not necesarrily activate the functions (in SFW5) unless you need them - this means that you will only have to test once after EHP implementation and will have the ability to activate the other features as and when required (although testing is required after activation of course) whereas it might be difficult to persuade your client/basis team to implement EHP4 later if you don't do it now.
In the features of EHP2 (activate FIN_ACC_GROUP_CLOSE) it states that there is a general performance improvement - although I have yet to experience it! From OSS note 1171344 "The functionality which is available in EHP2 consists of...
... Performance improvements of status management, reporting and initial start-up of consolidation workbench and monitor.
Since activating FIN_ACC_GROUP_CLOSE I have had many OSS notes requiring application but i discovered that when the technical team implemented the EHPs (before i joined this client) they somehow forgot the latest SP (support packs) and didn't upgrade to the current level - so make sure that you get the right SPs too (see the links in Greg's link above) to avoid the many OSS notes.
As for your question - "is there a list of OSS notes to specific to EHP upgrades? - the answer is most definietly "NO" - I already asked OSS in desperation!
however, you can see the OSS notes that i have applied listed in the above link ( BCS 6 EHP 2 (BCS 6.02) - activation of enhancement pack )

  • Basic questions about PCI-DIO-96

    Hi
I am trying to write code to control a digital I/O board for the first time.
I have a legacy board, PCI-DIO-96, as the code implies, it is a PCI digital I/O boiard with 96 I/O channels
My first question is, what would be the drivers and development platform I should download for this board?
I am planning to write my code in C++.
The second question is, I am trying to write a very simple application to drive 96 solenoid valves through the board.
Basically I need to use the board in output mode only.  No data gathering here.
The application basically needs to open and close these valves  for a specified number of milliseconds.  So basically,
I would be sending either 0 or 1 through the output channels, that's
it.    If I send a "1" signal through the board, does
    that
"toggle" the channel, meaning the channel will keep sending "1" through the ouput until I send another signal, or do I need
to send the "1" signal every few milliseconds to simulate a constant "1" signal?
Does anyone have code samples or know where I can find code samples illustrating this simple case?
    It would be greatly appreciated.
I realize these are very basic questions, but I am new to hardware programming and I am on a deadline.
    Thank  you
    Kiko

    Hi Kiko,
Great to see that you are asking questions here first, you definitely came to the right place.
Since you are starting with a clean slate as far as knowing how to use this board we can start off on the right foot.
Download the latest version of the drivers for your board.  You can find the drivers here: NI-DAQmx Version 7.5 for Windows 2000/NT/XP
After you have downloaded the drivers, power down the computer,
insert your board, and power it back up.  The board should now be
recognized and the drivers will install similarly to any new hardware
    would in Windows.
Now it's just a matter of learning how to use the commands that you need to get started.
I would recommend starting in the example files.  You can find
some excellent examples that should do almost exactly what you are
trying to do by looking in this path:
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\NI-DAQ\Examples\DAQmx ANSI C\Digital\Generate Values
Look for the example that best represents what it is you are trying to
do.  You will notice that all of the examples have a general flow
to how they call the board.
Create a Task and Define what that task is meant to do
Set the configuration for how exactly that task will operate
Read/Write various values until a condition is met
    Close the Task
Error Check all operations to assure that everything is working properly
It's really not all that difficult and should you run into any problems or errors don't forget to search ni.com or the forums to see if others have run into similar issues to what you are facing.
Regarding how the states for digital lines work.  The short answer
is that if you set a digital line to high it will stay high until you
set it back to low and vice versa.  For more details on everything
digital check out our Digital Fundamentals page.
    Best of luck!

  • Basic questions about JAAS capabilities

I've never used JAAS for authentication or authorization in a Java app before. Can somebody that has (or at least has some experience and knowledge about JAAS) please answer the following couple of basic questions about it? (I know I could probably answer these myself with a few hours of reading.)
    1. Can I use JAAS to restrict the users that can execute specific methods of my code?
    2. If the answer to #1 is yes, is there a way to programmatically determine if a JAAS login user has the permissions to run a method before actually calling that method. In other words, can I ask something like canUserExecute(method) or do I have to just put the call to the method in a try/catch and catch a security exception of some type?
    3. Is it fairly simple to have JAAS authenticate against a Windows Domain or a LDAP server?
    4. Are there programmatic ways to add or edit user information in JAAS?
Answer to any of these questions are greatly appreciated. I'll even toss a couple of Dukes to the people that answer each question. Thanks in advance.

You might look at the AfterthoughtSoft-Secure product at http://www.advancedmodelingconcepts.com. It is designed to do just that and will easily allow you to connect to users/group repositories that are in anything from a simple text file all the way up to Kerberos V.

  • Basic Questions on UITableView

Hi, I'm trying to learn the iPhone API by creating a simple table application and I have some basic questions. There are stuff in the example code and the docs that seem to contradict, and I'm hoping some people can clarify.
    1) Table View Programming for iPhone OS, it says that UITableView must have a delegate and a source. I take it that in the example code (let's use TableCellSubivews) RootViewController is the source and TableViewCellSubviews is the delegate?
    2) If so, why does TableViewCellSubviews adopt the UIApplicationDelegate protocol and not UITableViewDelegate? In fact, I don't think any of the classes in the example code adopt UITableViewDelegate.
    3) In the UITableViewDelegate reference, it names didSelectRowAtIndexPath as a method. In the example code, why is in the didSelectRowAtIndexPath a method in the RootViewController, and not the delegate itself?
Thanks for any explanations that anyone can give to help a noob!

    {quote}
    1) Table View Programming for iPhone OS, it says that UITableView must have a delegate and a source. I take it that in the example code (let's use TableCellSubivews) RootViewController is the source and TableViewCellSubviews is the delegate?
    {quote}
There are 3 things that need to be done when setting up a tableview:
1- the tableview controller itself, which determines how the tableview is set up, decides on the view, etc..
2- the data source: the controller in 1) above needs to ask someone "give me the cell with the data for row #x. That's the job of the data source
3- The delegate: some things for the table view need visible stuff such as the height of a row, whether a row should have a checkmark, etc... That's the job of the delegate.
Now what often happens is that people do not specify a data source nor a delegate. What this means is that the controller performs all 3 jobs. Again, if the controller does not specify its delegate (or no class registers as its delegate), then the controller acts as its own delegate. (that answers your second question)
    {quote}
    3) In the UITableViewDelegate reference, it names didSelectRowAtIndexPath as a method. In the example code, why is in the didSelectRowAtIndexPath a method in the RootViewController, and not the delegate itself?
    {quote}
    That's a tricky question.
The thing is that both the data source AND the delegate adopt a method called didSelectRowAtIndexPath. But they're for very different purposes. For the delegate, it's simply a notification by the controller that "hey, this row was selected, you may want to do something with it", i.e. change the color of the font, add a checkmark, etc...
For the data source, it's much more important (and required!): the controller is saying "hey, someone requested row #x. Please give it to me!" This includes getting all the data and setting up the whole row, then returning it to the controller.
Hope this helps clear things up.

  • Basic questions in SRM for Workflows+need material

    Hi All,
I have developed Workflows in SAP R3.I am very new to SRM. I have following questions -
    1. What is the use of BADI when we implement Workflow? My understanding till now is to provide all approvers to the
Shooping Cart. That means for workflows without approval we dont need to BADI to implement.
    2. Is there any other concepts more i have to know? Like in R3 Event will be triggered with help of change doc, status mang., LIS exceptions and all through SWEC tx. is it same in R3?
Sorry to ask very basic questions.
Can anyone provide me step to step guide to configure SRM workflows and Cookbook for SRM?
My Email id is [email protected]
It will be very helpful for me.
       Thanks in advance.
       Ashwani

    Hi,
    1.All the n step workflows(where approvers are determined dynamically) in SRM can be implemented only using the BADI "BBP_WFL_APPROV_BADI".the main purpose of this BADI is to fetch the Approvers/agents for the workflow.In addition to the  n step WF,you also have no approval, 1 step and 2 step approval workflow in which the agent assignment can be done directly(no BADI reqd) and this is applicable for all types of business objects i.e. Shopping cart,Bid etc.For more details refer the foll link;

2.Work flow concepts are same as in R/3.So techincally you can create your custom workflows in the same way.
Do let me know if you need any further help.

  • DVD studio basic questions...

    HI!
I have mostly used FCP to make web videos, so making a DVD is new for me. I used iDVD in the past for family videos, but that's about it.
    Some basic questions...
    1) Does DVD Studio work from different FCP files? Meaning, can I create all the "chapter sections" in my dvd in different FCP files? Is that the best way to do it? Or does it all have to be done in one FCP file with some sort of chapter marker system?
    2) Does DVD Studio read from FCP direct or from exported .dv files?
    3) Do I have a choice of using FCP or exported .dv files?
I ask these so I know the right way to approach my FCP project.
Also, if it can use .dv files, then I can outsource the authoring of making the DVD to someone else to save me some time. This is harder to do with the FCP files.
    FINALLY...
    4) When I used iDVD in the past and dvds I buy in the store, all I could get was about 1 hour on a dvd.
With DVD studio, how can you make a longer DVD that can fit more than 1 hour, as I am making a professional product for duplication.
Thanks sooooooooo much for your wisdom..... john

    Hi John - in response:
    1) yes, it can certainly do so. However, you can also use a single timeline in FCP, set chapter markers and add the DVDSP meta data (click 'm' twice in the FCP timeline to get the chapter marker window, and add the data there). You might also add the markers when in DVDSP - all fairly easy to do. I often use lots of different FCP clips to make a single track in DVDSP - you have to think of a DVDSP timeline very differently to a FCP one... in DVDSP the timeline can hold completely different films and you use chapter markers to help delineate it all. You only need to use a new track in DVDSP if it helps with the overall structure for the disc, or if you've used 99 chapter markers in the first one already.
    2) yes, it can. Using a FCP reference file is possible, as is using an exported .dv file. The difference is a matter of preference, largely. I tend to export out of FCP as a QT self-contained file, encode it using compressor to be mpeg2, and then import into DVDSP. You can, of course, go from FCP directly to compressor without making the QT file. The output from compressor is what you are after for DVDSP - you can use QT or .dv files right into DVDSP, but they get compressed to MPEG2 as the disc is built. The encoder in DVDSP is not a particularly refined tool, and Compressor will give you so many more options, including encoding the audio to AC3 (dolby digital) which is a very important thing to do!
    3) yes again... see above? You can't use the FCP project files, you certainly can use other file types, but you really ought to use MPEG2 files from Compressor. You'll get a better looking result.
    4) yes... this all comes down to the way the footage is encoded (I'm labouring the point, but Compressor is your friend here again). There are lots of ways you can squeeze more onto a standard 4.37Gb disc - it is easy to get 2 hours on if you know what you are doing. This could be an entire thread of it's own, but the basics are that you need to use Dolby Digital audio (AC3) which has a tiny file size but a decent audio sound. This leaves you with more space on your disc for the video. The more you compress the video (use lower bitrates like 3Mbps) the smaller the file will be, and therefore the more footage you can fit onto the disc.
The problem is that lower bitrates can result in lower quality. This is especially true if your footage includes pans, zooms, shimmering water, leaves on trees, fades and so on. You tend to get blocky areas that look poor. Higher bitrates certainly help, but you get larger file sizes and thus can fit less on the disc... it's always a trade off between file size and quality. With iDVD the encoding decisions are taken for you, and you can't control it, but it fortunately does a pretty decent job.
There is no set or enciding rules that will work for every piece of video you have got, however you can go a long way using variable rate encodes (VBR) that have a range from 4 - 7.4Mbps. In order to know whether the resulting file will fit onto your disc you have to do some good old 'bit budgeting'. There are online tools to help you where you type in the length of your footage in minutes, and the size of your DVD capacity, and it tells you what the bitrate needs to be in order to fit the space available. Be careful though - it cannot tell what your footage is, and you have to preview the results yourself to judge if the quality is right.
A tip is to find the 'problem' areas in the footage, make a short (2mins) clip and encode that at different bit rates. When you find one that works well, use that for all of the footage. As long as you use 2 pass (VBR) encodes in Compressor, it will assign lower bitrates to the easier sections, and higher bitrates to the problem areas.
There are many other encoders out there which are better than Compressor - have a look at Cinemacraft on a PC for a start - but you pay a premium for them. They also take a while to learn, but the trick to making a great looking DVD is to use great looking source footage and encode it well before making the DVD. If you encode as part of making the DVD then you've missed the point and you'll get 'average' results at best!

  • OC4J 9.0.4 stand alone - basic questions

    Hi,
    I'm upgrading my web applications from OC4J (1.0.2.2) to OC4J 9.0.4.
I have a few basic questions. Since I asked these as part of another thread and didn't get a response, I thought starting a new thread might help...
    1. Does the JSP compiler in OC4J 9.0.4 (JSP container) work with the JDK version set in the path ? (I'm not using OJSP).
    2. I read that OC4J 9.0.4 is J2EE 1.3 compliant. With OC4J 1.0.2.2 , I used the j2ee.jar file (that was bundled with J2SDKEE 1.3) to compile my Servlets/Struts code. I copied it into the OC4J_HOME directory and set the Classpath to it, to build my classes.
With 9.0.4, can I still use this j2ee.jar file or do I need to use the jar files (Servlet.jar) in the OC4J_HOME/lib directory?
    3. Could somebody throw some light on why some jar files are placed in OC4J_HOME while others are in the OC4J_HOME/lib directory ? What is the difference?
Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Shyam

    Hi, shyam:
It is nice to raise different questions in different threads.
    1. Does the JSP compiler in OC4J 9.0.4 (JSP container) work with the JDK version set
in the path ? (I'm not using OJSP).I believe you are referring to the runtime JSP engine, which compiles your JSP when you first access it. The answer is yes.
To see the compilation setting when oracle jsp engine is compiling jsp files, start oc4j with the debug flag:
      java -Dbuild.debug=true -jar oc4j.jar
    2. I read that OC4J 9.0.4 is J2EE 1.3 compliant. With OC4J 1.0.2.2 , I used the
j2ee.jar file (that was bundled with J2SDKEE 1.3) to compile my Servlets/Struts code.
I copied it into the OC4J_HOME directory and set the Classpath to it, to build my
classes. With 9.0.4, can I still use this j2ee.jar file or do I need to use the jar files
(Servlet.jar) in the OC4J_HOME/lib directory? Not sure what to say about j2ee.jar of j2SDKEE1.3 since I have never used it. For Servlet code, they are pure java code as long as you use the right libraries. Use the one in OC4J_HOME/lib if possible, although it probably does not matter much. For JSP file, there is no problem of compilation if you do not want to precompile them. All you need is packaging them and deploying them.
    3. Could somebody throw some light on why some jar files are placed in OC4J_HOME
while others are in the OC4J_HOME/lib directory ? What is the difference? The executable jars are in OC4J_HOME directory. Besides that, I do not see see much difference.

  • MapViewer - A team of newbies and definitely basic questions...

    Dear All,
We are a team of programmers who are very new to MapViewer. We are an experienced team of GIS programmers, however, we find difficulty in applying known functions to MapViewer. It's a great application, but a lot of unknowns.
We have very basic questions, as well as advanced ones. I would like to summarize them as follows:
    1. How can I let the map to be zoomed into a specific feature?
    2. How can I execute a query to find a specific feature?
    3. How can I execute network analysis query to find the shortest path or paths between two or more nodes?
    4. How can I find out the nearest node to the location when user clicks on an arbitrary location on the map?
    5. How can I execute generic queries, without (this is important) need to send/receive XML queries?
    6. The bottomline is: we just want to use ready made functions to make it as easy as possible.
Anyhelp is greatly appreciated. We are stuck with the basics of MapViewer (Oracle Maps).
Please help us find the light :)
    Best regards.
    Desperate MapViewer Team!

Here are some quick answers, hopefully they are not too late.
    1. You will construct a theme (mostly a dynamic one) that contains the specific feature, then call the theme's setBoundingTheme(true). Typically what we see people do is: a) create a dynamic theme with a query that selects a set of features; b) create a FOI layer based on the theme (MVThemeBasedFOI); c) call the setBoundingTheme(true) on the FOI layer. The end result, is that MapViewer will process your query and return the FOI data to the Oracle Maps JavaScript client, which will zoom the map to include the set of features in the FOI layer. Check out Oracle Maps tutorial #35 for an example.
    2. This is partly answered above. Basically you will construct a theme with a dynamic query string. You may want to check out tutorial #37 which finds out and displays the buffers around a set of points; the buffers are constructed via a SQL query at run time.
    3. This is not really a MapViewer question; rather, you may need to consult the Oracle Spatial routing engine XML API; the gist is you send the XML route request to the routing server, which returns a set of coordinates for your directions, which you can construct (MapViewer) FOI objects out of and display them on the map.
    4. I'm not sure our routing engine or network data model API has such a function ready for use; what you can do is if you can formulate the SQL query string (with the current location represented as a binding variable), then you can create a theme out of this query condition, and simply supply the location at run time to get the set of nodes.
    5. Can you please elaborate on what do you mean by generic queries? A simple usage scenario will help.
    6. We understand; there are quite a lot of things that can be made easier out of the box and we are working towards that. in the mean time, just ask questions if you have them; and always check out the Oracle maps tutorials first (actually reading the MapViewer primer article should be the absolute first step :) ).
    thanks
