  • Is there actually a way to back up attached drives and have it work?

    I have 2 identical 500GB drives attached to my Mac Mini (media computer). One of them contains nothing but my iTunes library (a little over 120GB) and I was just manually copying that to the other once a week or so. After reading up on Time Machine it sounded like the perfect way to keep my data backed up with little or no effort on my part so I committed to using it on the Mini, allowing TM to format (erase) the second drive and use it exclusively for TM.
    Now the problem; I went into TM preferences and found my iTunes drive in the exclude list. I unchecked it and my "Total included" went from 50GB to 170GB as I would have expected. The issue is, I've forced it to backup several times now and I've let it run for a couple of days, but it still just shows the 50GB while it is doing it's backup and if I browse TM and go to the iTunes drive, I can only see the current files, no historical at all (I can confirm there are no iTunes files on the actual backup drive as well). So now I have no backup of my iTunes library (actually I did a manual copy to a little FireLite drive) and I'm running out of guesses as to how to get this to work properly.
    I really like Time Machine and it works great on my MBP once I excluded all of my Parallels directories. It seems like what I'm trying to do with my iTunes should work based on what I've read and what the application is showing me, but it just doesn't. It doesn't even make an attempt from the progress dialog (always out of 50GB instead of the 170GB the preference panel is showing). I do have hostnames on all my Macs.
    Does anyone have any suggestions? I saw some similar issues but nothing exactly the same. Is this, in fact, a bug I'm seeing? Am I misunderstanding something in the, relatively simple, interface?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Just checking back in. There have been some software updates and I've played around some more, but I still can't make Time Machine (on one external USB drive) backup both the internal HD and another external USB drive.
    I guess I'm still a little vague on whether or not this is even supported. Is it? Based on the control panel it would seem I'm doing everything correctly (unchecking the skip this drive option) but it just never even starts to backup my iTunes drive.
    Anyone able to make this work or at least able to confirm that it doesn't / can't work?

  • WARNING with latest kernel: at net/mac80211/driver-ops.

    Hi. i'm running the latest kernel and having many kernel oops like the attached, any ideas? is this a problem already in upstream? should I open a bug report in archlinux? I'm thinking to switch to LTS.
    TIA.

  • Can u we take online redo log backups using RMAN......can any one guide me

    can u we take online redo log backups using RMAN.....in 1og

    'Backup' solution for online redo logs is multiplexing (members of a group on different independent drives).

  • Changing drive names and elimating unwanted drive backups

    This will be a little complicated:
    I recently changed my main drive's name from "Main HD" to "Mac Pro HD". I also added 2 internal drives: "Backup" and "Snow". 3 drives total. Plus my Time Machine internal drive. I just noticed that TM is no longer backing up "Mac Pro HD" and it started backing up "Backup" and "Snow".
    I don't need backups of Backup or Snow and want to save the older "Main HD" backups and have TM start backing up "Mac Pro HD"
    Can I delete all the folders via finder that have "Backup" and "Snow" in them?
    and there are a couple backups that have "Main HD" and "Snow" in them. Can I delete "Snow" in those folders via finder?
    This will delete folders back to 2009-10-19-111140.
    If I set TM to ignore "Backup" and "Snow" in Sys Prefs and include "Mac Pro HD" will TM start backing up my one drive as of now and have a space in time to 10/19?
    I bet I won't be able to access the old "Main HD" files via TM, but I'd at least be able to access them via finder if I ever find I need something and I'll do it manually.
    Or do I have to erase my entire TM drive and just start all over again?

    Yes, if you change the name of a drive, TM treats it as a new one.
    Can I delete all the folders via finder that have "Backup" and "Snow" in them?
    NO! Never move, change, or delete TM backups via the Finder. You can hopelessly corrupt your backups.
    But you can delete all backups of selected items, via Time Machine. See #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
    To delete all backups of a drive, especially one that is no longer attached, start from a Finder window and press ShiftCmdC (or select your computer name in the Finder Sidebar). Then +Enter Time Machine+ and navigate to a backup. It will show one folder for each drive/partition that was backed-up on that run.
    If I set TM to ignore "Backup" and "Snow" in Sys Prefs and include "Mac Pro HD" will TM start backing up my one drive as of now and have a space in time to 10/19?
    Probably, if that's when you did the renaming.
    I bet I won't be able to access the old "Main HD" files via TM, but I'd at least be able to access them via finder if I ever find I need something and I'll do it manually.
    Unless you delete them as above, sure. Use the same procedure as above to view, restore, or delete (except you can't use the normal "restore" button, since the drive they were saved from isn't present. Select what you want, click the "gear" icon in the toolbar, and choose +Restore <item> to ...+ and you'll get a prompt for the destination.)
    Message was edited by: Pondini -- you're on Leopard, so right-click won't work to restore to an alternate location; use the "gear" icon instead.

  • Login to Attached Drives

    How do I make this work properly?
    Computer A has accounts for User M as administrator and User N as standard user.
    Drive B is attached by FW to Computer A.
    User M on Computer X can connect to Computer A and connect to Drive B. Perfect.
    User N on Computer Y can connect to Computer A but cannot see or connect to the attached Drive B
    (User M can) connect to Computer A on Computer Y so the problem is not the specific workstation.)
    (User N cannot) be elevated to administrator status on Computer A)
    Any ideas or hints?

    I received some help on a different forum. The problem is that OSX will not allow a Standard User logged in from another computer on the LAN to see or connect to FW attached drives.
    In my case, the goal was to connect to the FW attached drive for the purpose of using it as the target for a remote wireless Time Machine backup.
    The solution was:
    • Connect to Computer A from Computer Y using a Administrator account name and password.
    • Connect to FW attached Drive B.
    • Open System Preferences - Time Machine
    • Use "Select Disk..." to connect to the remote FW Drive B
    • Enable Time Machine
    • Open Finder and Eject attached Drive B
    Once TM has been set up using the Administrator account, TM will locate and connect to remote attached Drive B automatically for all backups.

    ...for 0x81080101:
    "ERROR - The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101)
    The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation."
    If you receive the above error in your report, we have recently found a registry key which
    contains the timeout value set by Microsoft for VSS and found that you can edit this to extend it.
    To get to the registry key, open Regedit (Start > Run > Regedit) and browse to:
    "HKLM\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\SPP\\CreateTimeout".
    Change value to 1200000 (2*10*60*1000 = 20 mins).
    The default for the timeout period is 10 mins so hopefully doubling this will give enough time to
    complete the snapshot.
    If this isn't present, you'll need to manually enter the registry key. It's a DWORD 32-bit key.
    --> NOTE: HAve not done this yet.

    Scot Pichelman

    Hi Scot,
    Sometimes a third party backup application will change the default VSS provider adding VSS writers which causes Windows Server Backup using an incorrect component in doing backup, that's why I suggest to delete it for a test. Anyway you can reinstall it
    after testing.
    And as you said a high-load CPU could also be the cause of the issue so you may need to first rule hardware effective out.
    If issue still exists, please try the steps below as well:
    1. Please check DCOM Server Process Launcher service is started.
    2. If not, try to change RPC service to run as SYSTEM account. To do this please modify the following key:
    Note: Backup the key before edit incase it cause any issue.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs\
    Find "ObjectName" and change the value to LocalSystem.
    Reboot to see if DCOM back to work and if Windows Server Backup starts working. If not, please provide the result if there is any new error occurs.
    If DCOM still not work, please compare the content of the following key with a working server:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
    Edit if there is any difference and make sure you created a backup of the key before editing.

  • Hard Drive Backup Utility - Question

    I have a P67A-GD55 and everything is working wonderfully. I would like more information concerning the Hard Disk Drive Backup Utility in the BIOS.  The BIOS Version is 1.9 and that came on the board from the time of purchase.
    I can get to the HARD DRIVE BACKUP option in BIOS and it seems like it times out waiting for something...which I have yet to figure out.
    My intention is to do a complete backup to an another drive LETTER: which is currently the identical sized partition on the same physical drive. I was able to use CLONEZILLA x64 but would prefer to use the built in Utility.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    My System;
    MSI P67A-GD55 B3 Stepping (Bios version 1.9)
    I7 2600K
    G.SKILL 8Gb DDR3 1600   F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
    MSI N5500GTX-Ti Video card
    Hitachi 2Tb 7200 6Gb SATA Hardrive
    Win 7 Home Prem x64

    i dont recommend windows backup utility, not comprehensive enough.
    if u are a home user, there are many free utilities out there.
    drive backup, true image and todo backup are all good backup tools.
    they are all can help you.
    personally, i use todo backup.

  • Restore from external hard drive backup

    How do I restore from an external hard drive backup of my old system. How do you import into iTunes 8?

    Hello,
    Sorry to tap into this thread but it was the only one that made sense.
    I have been trying to restore my kid's libraries from an external HD. I assumed I needed to be logged into their Windows profile to launch each of their own itunes applications. As I tried to launch with the Shift key held down, I got the appropriate request about choosing a library. But when I navigated to the HD and found their .itl file, it said it was locked or I had inadequate permissions and would not proceed.
    I then logged in as myself (admin) & then dragged & dropped the files into their respective folders. When I went back to open itunes, the songlist was where it should be but nothing played when I tried them.
    Is this where "consolodating" comes in and what is it and how do you do it?
    Thanks for your patience.

  • 10g Physical Standby to be used for Backup through RMAN

    Dear All,
    I have 10g Database Primary and Standby Server which is operating in Maximum Performance Mode. I want to use Standby Database for performing Weekly Full and Daily Incremental Backups through RMAN. Kindly inform me is it possible, if yes how should I configure it. I will also be using Compression and Encryption while performing backups.
    Best Regards,
    Asif

    Yes, that is possible.
    Because the standby databases are in mount mode, they can be accessed through the SYS account .
    I use the following RMAN script for the same purpose. Please note that we have configure the flashback area, so we are not letting RMAN delete the archive files:
    run {
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    allocate channel ch1 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    backup
    incremental level 0
    tag full_bk_db_webshop
    format 'df_%d_t%t_s%s_p%p'
    (database include current controlfile);
    backup archivelog all;
    This script is for a FULL backup ( level 0 ). You could also use the "backup full" command
    You can easily change the level of the Backup for incremental purposes.
    Starting RMAN - if configured correctly - is the same as with an open database
    export ORACLE_SID=<STDBYSID>
    rman target / rcvcat <rman/rman>@<catalogsid>
    the user for, and the catalogsid are merely examples

    hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

    brigdool wrote:

    HI Brigdool,
    It depends how you made the backup.
    If you copied your entire iTunes folder onto the flash drive, just copy it back to the appropriate place on the computer.
    If you copied individual folders or files, add them back to iTunes by inserting the flash drive in your computer, and then dragging the files into your "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
    The first method recreates your library as it was, with all playcounts, playlists, etc.  The second method builds a new library with the same content.

    Am I Correct if not please any one answer me why the online redologs are not copied.No. They are not needed because the only valid backup for a cold (or noarchivelog mode database) backup is a consistent backup. Since the backup is already consistent there are no changes to apply.
    The online redo logs are (re)created/reset by the "resetlogs" clause when the database is opened.
