Netcfg 2.5 PRE_UP problem

Hi,
I'm recently observing a problem for connecting in ad-hoc mode with netcfg
I was using this configuration to connect
more /etc/network.d/hero
CONNECTION="wireless"
INTERFACE=wlan0
PRE_UP="ifconfig wlan0 down; iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc"
#QUIRKS=(prescan predown)
SCAN="yes"
SECURITY="none"
ESSID="hero"
IP="dhcp"
TIMEOUT=20
With new netcfg version, it fails to connect.
I though can connect manually to the unencrypted connection doing this:
ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc
iwconfig wlan0 essid hero
dhcpcd wlan0
ANy solution for that?

I have the same problem right now connecting to my android phone(i suggested essid hero comes from the hero phone ), did you find any solution on how to connect with netcfg?
my profiles for connecting to the phone looks the same, but still no result, getting
> WPA Authentication/Association Failed
error..
though connect with ifconfig/iwconfig works without problems.. reading the wiki and searching the forum didnt help much.
regards

  • Iputils issue, when connecting with netcfg.

    I hope what I will do is correct to put it here.
    I updated today iputils and suddenly I couldn't connect to my networks anymore.
    I'm not an expert and I don't know exactly what was going on.
    1) I tried to connect using netcfg to wireless with WPA security, and the result was dhcp lease attempt failed.
    2) I tried to connect using netcfg to ethernet, same problem as before.
    3) I used dhcp without netcfg and it connected correctly.
    then I downgraded iputils and netcfg worked again.

    Hi JimSmith,
    Thanks for reply.
    TNS entry as below:
    ORCL_DB =
    (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 91.198.252.83)(PORT = 1521)) )
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = orcl) (SERVER = DEDICATED) ) )
    It works fine if I choose TNS (Network Allias: ORCL_DB).
    For the Basic setting:
    Hostname = 91.198.252.83
    Port = 1521
    SID = orcl
    The error I received when connecting to db based on Basic option is Failure -Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection.
    Below are the entries of SQLnet.ora. Any entry should I add into sqlnet.ora?
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
    Appreciate your comment.
    Thanks.

  • Broadcom BCM4328 connection problem

    Hey,
    For days I've been struggling to get my wireless up and running. And I'm pretty close I think, I believe I've set up everything correctly. My wireless card connects to my local home network (WPA secured) using netcfg and everything seems well. However it disconnects within the hour. Sometimes after 15 mins and sometimes after 30 mins or so, it's kind of driving me nuts. Is anybody else experiencing the same problems with this card? The only way to regain my connection is to manually reconnect with netcfg.
    I'm using the driver from AUR for this card and the installation procedure I got from the corresponding Wiki. But like I said everything works except for this stupid glitch. And it isn't only netcfg that gives this problem, I've had the same issue with Wicd and NetworkManager.
    I hope somebody can clarify this for me,
    Ivan.

    Is there really nobody who can help me? I noticed that when this happens, I'm not really "disconnected" from the network since running "iwconfig" shows I'm still connected:
    eth0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"bistarac" Nickname:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:0C:F6:50:DB:CC
    Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power:24 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Encryption key:off
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=-52 dBm Noise level=-90 dBm
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:2 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    There is however 0 traffic, no webpage is loaded and the only thing I can do is disconnect and reconnect to get a connection for another short period of time until the problem happens again. Can this be some kind of WPA or netcfg issue? Or is this related to the broadcom-wl driver?
    Also here is my netcfg config file for this network in the hope that it may help:
    CONNECTION='wireless'
    INTERFACE='eth0'
    SECURITY='wpa-configsection'
    ESSID='bistarac'
    IP='dhcp'
    TIMEOUT=300
    CONFIGSECTION='
    ssid="bistarac"
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
    psk="..."
    proto=WPA'
    Thanks again !

    The other problem, which I guess is very common to linux users, is the wireless isn't waked up after resume from suspend. In my case, it can't be waked up even if I use the manual method. This is more important than to get it work on boot because I usually put my computer to sleep instead of power down when I am not using it.
    I am trying Arch Linux on my old laptop, if it works well, I'll put it into my work desktop.

  • [solved] ssh went down after recent binary update

    well i just did a binary update and ran into some problems apparently not knowing what i was doing, see last couple posts here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1300263.  So now i am trying to reinstall some of my apps, but when i go to ssh into it i get connection activily refused.  so i go to the console, and run
    # systemctl restart sshd
    no output message.  then i ran systemctl stop sshd, start sshd, etc... no output messages.   then  i get
    # ps aux | grep sshd
    root 202 0.0 0.0 39736 2684 ? Ss 09:20 0:00 /usr/bin/sshd -D
    then i run nmap on port 22 localhost and get port 22/tcp state closed, host is up.
    Note, pasting my conf file will be impossible without ssh.  catch 22.  I didnt make any edits to that ssh conf file in more than 6 months, all has been fine until the binary update.  Should i be looking at that as the cause or is there something deeper going on here?
    Edit;
    # journalctl -u sshd
    Starting OpenSSH Daemon
    Started OpenSSH Daemon
    Server listening on :: port 22.
    Server listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22
    doesnt look very secure but apart from that looks fine to me atleast.

  • Wireless *intermittently* fails to connect upon boot

    Hi folks,
    First post! After a few days of grinding away, I've got my first Arch Linux installation up and running alongside a Windows 7 partition. As a relatively inexperienced Linux user, it's been challenging at times, but I'm very happy with the new setup and I've resolved most problems encountered thus far.
    However, I've run into an irksome problem that I haven't yet been able to solve:
    Most of the time when I boot into Arch Linux, my wireless connection starts automatically via netctl. I can open up Chromium and browse straight away.
    However, perhaps every 2-3 boots, I start an Arch Linux session where I find that my wireless has not connected. I'll open up Chromium and receive errors, then I'll open up a terminal and find that 'iwconfig' isn't showing any active wireless connection.
    I've done my share of Googling on this, and browsed the Arch wiki to try and find an answer, but many of the solutions that I have found relate to the problem of a wireless connection refusing to connect at all. This doesn't apply to my case, so I thought I'd put this out to the panel of resident experts here!
    Here's my iwconfig when I boot into a 'good' session with working wireless:
    eno1      no wireless extensions.
    wlp4s0    IEEE 802.11bgn  ESSID:"ZyXEL7850rtg"
              Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.472 GHz  Access Point: 50:67:F0:E8:4E:00
              Bit Rate=150 Mb/s   Tx-Power=20 dBm
              Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr=2347 B   Fragment thr:off
              Power Management:off
              Link Quality=70/70  Signal level=-35 dBm
              Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:1   Missed beacon:0
    lo        no wireless extensions.
    Here's my iwconfig when I boot into a 'bad' session with no wireless:
    eno1      no wireless extensions.
    wlp4s0    IEEE 802.11bgn  ESSID:off/any
              Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=20 dBm
              Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr=2347 B   Fragment thr:off
              Power Management:off
    lo        no wireless extensions.
    Other relevant info:
    - I have recently migrated to netctl from netcfg, as instructed in the Arch wiki. I was hoping that this would resolve my problem, as the exact same issue previously occurred for me on netcfg. Unfortunately, the problem remains intact.
    - I see no such issues on my Windows 7 partition (the wireless connection always works upon boot), so it would appear that hardware issues can be ruled out.
    - When wireless fails to start upon boot, I can still connect by entering 'sudo wifi-menu wlp4s0' and specifying the desired connection manually. So I don't have to reboot to get my connection working, but nonetheless, this is a nuisance.
    I'm not sure what other data (logs etc.) might be useful in diagnosing this issue, but I'd be grateful for any pointers.
    Thanks in advance for any assistance or newbie-bashing rendered!

    Thanks for the suggestion Aton. I reproduced the problem, and then sifted through journalctl to see what I could find.
    I dug up the following lines of interest:
    Apr 15 18:31:02 kevin-pc network[297]: Starting network profile 'wlp4s0-ZyXEL7850rtg'...
    Apr 15 18:31:15 kevin-pc dhcpcd[487]: timed out

    Apr 15 18:31:15 kevin-pc systemd[1]: Unit netctl@wlp4s0\x2dZyXEL7850rtg.service entered failed state
    I have no idea what to make of this, but it's good to get some new information.
    I'm going to Google around a bit with some of these error messages. In the meantime, I open the floor to suggestions if anyone discerns anything obvious in the output above...

  • Netcfg problems

    I read all the netcfg threads that I could find, the wiki, and I must be missing or forgeting something. I was using netcfg fine before I installed wicd. Wicd is working fine, but I found netcfgGUI so I wanted to go back to netcfg since all I was missing was a gui. No onto my problem. Now when I call netcfg I get:
    DHCP IP lease attempt failed
    I never use to get that. I tried a number of quirks and other things but still was working. Now if I
    /etc/rc.d/wicd start
    then
    /etc/rc.d/wicd stop
    and then run netcfg it works fine.
    I know that I am missing something, but I am not sure what.
    I am running Arch64 with intel 4965. As I said before I never needed to do anything different before I installed wicd, no pre_up or quirks or anything.
    Thanks

    I am assuming that the wicd daemon is calling something? I am not sure though because it working fine before.
    ##EDIT##
    is the config file for the profiles case sensative?

    I have been running into some baffling problems when connecting to wireless.  I regularly connect to an unsecured wireless with a hidden essid connection that then has some kind of ssl login.

    oftentimes i have to do dhclient multiple times (the same goes if i try and use dhcpcd)...can someone explain why this happens?

    I am having the same problem on a network with a signal Quality: 5/5.
    I used to use wicd without problems (pre 1.6.*).  About a month ago I started having problems with wicd.  At first I had trouble getting wicd to start, but after updating to 1.6.2 that problem went away.  I then starting having problems with connecting to the network.  It would show that it was connected and then disconnect after a few seconds (may have been a problem with dhcp).  When I started having problems with wicd I decided to wait for an update to fix it, so I don't know if something else changed during that time that might be causing this problem.
    Last night I decided to try netcfg.  I following the directions on the Arch wiki and it worked.  I connected to my WPA network with DHCP and was able to surf the net.  I then tried disconnecting and reconnecting, just to be sure that everything was working.  Ever since then I have been getting the same
    :: wireless up
    [BUSY] dhcpcd: timed out
    - DHCP IP lease attempt failed.
    [FAIL]
    that was mentioned earlier.
    Since this appears to be happening with both wicd and netcfg, is it possible that this is a problem with the driver?  I am using the broadcom-wl driver and the output from lspci  is
    0b:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 05)

  • Netcfg problem with wep shared key

    hello guys,
    I would like to connect to a wireless device with netcfg. The device has a WEP encryption with shared key authentication. I'm able to connect using the gnome nm-applet, but with netcfg i keep getting the "Wireless association failed" error.
    My config file for netcfg:
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    DESCRIPTION="A simple WEP encrypted wireless connection"
    INTERFACE="wlan0"
    SECURITY="wep"
    ESSID="[essid]"
    KEY="s:[password]"
    IP="dhcp"
    May the problem lie in the shared key authentication? I tried
    IWCONFIG="enc restricted"
    but it still  doesn't work. I have an intel  3945 wireless card.
    Any help is appreciated,
    thanks.

    what puzzles me is that
    1) i'm able to connect to the same device if I set the open authentication,
    2) I'm able to connect if I set the WPA protection, and
    3) I'm even able to connect (with WEP and shared key authentication) using gnome nm-applet.
    The only problem I have is with netcfg and iwconfig, so i'm asking if iwconfig has a specific problem with shared authentication and if there is a way to handle it.

  • Problems with netcfg when booting

    I read the netcfg article in the wiki and did everything it told me to. MY wireless does work but I have to netcfg mynetwork after boot in order to get it working.
    /etc/network.d/mynetwork
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    DESCRIPTION="A simple WEP encrypted wireless connection"
    INTERFACE="wlan0"
    SECURITY="wep"
    ESSID="******"
    KEY="*********************"
    IP="dhcp"
    I have added the net-profiles daemon to rc.conf
    I set my "NETWORKS=( mynetwork )"
    I have copied the file to /etc/network.d/mynetwork
    I done chmod 600 /etc/network.d./mynetwork
    I am running netcfg v2.2.1.
    What seems to be the problem?
    *note,my wireless does work it just won't start on boot.

    Hi,
    I actually tried something stupid. Maybe I did not realise it while i did it but later on knew that both phones are now useless. I tried factory resetting my 7970 phones without a power brick. Now i just have 2 phones which just wont boot up. I tried everything I found on teh internet. tired using uploading load files using cme4.3 and cucm 4.3. tried upgrading firmware with the latest firware but it is just stuck and after about 3 months i now feel that i've lost my phones for good. all that happens is the line buttons keep blinking and the headset button is green and the mute button is red. When i tried using call manager express, i used a debug on the router and i can see phone asking for an ip address and also for teh firmware and my tftp providing it. after all that is finished i see no outputs and the phone still wont start. the screen is blank and i cant see anything on it. tried teh factory reset and all other possible things but still stuck. COULD SOMEONE PLEEASE HELP ME OUT.!!!

  • [Solved]Strange problem with netcfg

    I broke netcfg, and I'm not really sure what's wrong.  Here's what happened.  I installed netcfg, then installed archassistant.  I started by setting up a profile in archassistant, then decided that I wanted the profile to startup at boot.  So, I added the profile to rc.conf, ran /etc/rc.d/network start, and noticed that it was looking for the profile in /etc/net-profiles, instead of /etc/network.d (which is where archassistant was looking).  So, I copied over the file, ran network start again, and up it went.  Then I opened up archassistant, which had been set to autoconnect.  But instead of saying "wlan0 is already in use" (like it had been saying when I tired to reconnect before), is connected again.  Somehow, both the network deamon and archassistant managed to connect at the same time, both using wlan0. Not thinking much of it,  I rebooted, hopping it would connect properly at startup, but... now neither one will connect.  The network deamon times out, and archassistant just says it can't connect.
    I know that was a long winded explanation, and i"m not really posting any real info, but I have no idea where to start with this one.  So, anyone have any idea what happened?

    Ahah!  I figured it out.  Unfortunately this error occurred because of a chronic condition that I have. It's called I-can-do-it-without-the-manual syndrome.  If I had actually read the wiki completely, and followed it's carefully and clearly laid out directions, none of this would have happened.
    As it turned out this is what happened:  I set up a profile with archassistant, then proceeded to set the profile to startup at boot.  The problem is that the netcfg 2.0.6-1 package comes with both v1 and v2.  So, being the dunce I am, I actually set up a v1 profile, (which did work at first), and up it went.  I then attempted to run archassistant, which was using v2; this somehow broke v1 (I'm still not sure how, not that it matters), and then when I tried to use archassistant (in another stroke of genius), I forgot to run it as root or at least sudo.  Thus, archassistant wouldn't connect, either.
    So, what did we learn?  READ THE WIKI!  Oh... and run archassistant as root, or it won't connect (they really should do something about that).

  • Netcfg problem

    When I suspend my macbook, is breaks netcfg.  When before I had a perfectly good connection, it is now gone.  If I run netcfg home, the dhcp output just waits for the carrier.  And when I run dhcpcd manually, I get the same results, I then reboot, and it will work until the next suspend.
    I am using pm-suspend (not hibernate) and a macbook 2,1
    Here is the output of the pm-suspend log:

    Check in the wiki to setup the suspend options.  You may also need to make sure your session saves.  Every time I suspend, it quits my session.

  • My problems with netcfg

    I have arch running on a samsung nc10 netbook, usually using xfce.
    The last few days I have been trying out openbox as a standalone window manager/ de replacement in a quest to get the computer running even quicker.
    For networking ,first of all I tried using netcfg to set up my wireless and ethernet connections. Managed to do this after a good deal of searching in the forums and wiki - I am using static ip here at home. Found out you need IFOPTS= ... in your wireless profile if using static ip (but this isn't mentioned in the wiki or the man, or in the example profiles that are provided.) I then wanted the wireless to be disconnected if ethernet was present, did a bit more reading and discovered netcfg is not designed to do this. I installed ifplugd.  Didn't have much success and gave up last night after several hours of fiddling. I hadn't even started on trying to set up wpa encryption. Felt quite frustrated
    This evening I installed wicd, and within a minute I had everything set up the way I wanted without having to search forums and wikis. It scans for wireless networks, connects automatically (after initial configuration), easy to set up wireless encryption, disconnects the wireless when ethernet is available, and has an icon it the tray.
    Lots of people on the forums seem to be happily using netcfg, and heartily recommend it. Is it worth me persevering with netcfg? Is netcfg "better"? Why would you use it instead of some other network manager? Wicd just seems to be so much easier and quicker to set up.
    Re-reading this, it sounds like a rant about netcfg. It's not meant to be, it's just my observation. Quite likely I am being incompetent.

    Is netcfg "better"?
    It's your system.  I say do what works for you.  I use netcfg on my main laptop, which usually just connects to my home wireless, wicd with my netbook, which travels more, and wicd with my crap laptop that acts as a music server.

  • Netcfg laptop wireless - "DHCP ip lease attempt failed"??

    hey folks. just loaded arch onto a toshiba laptop. in the process of configuring wireless, i followed the netcfg config instructions in the wiki. It worked fine the first time, but when I rebooted every subsequent time i tried to connect I get the "DHCP IP lease attempt failed" error. IN my logs i get absolutely nothing helpful - just "wlan0: rebinding lease of 172.16.0.138" and "wlan0: timed out". Of course, when I had Windows XP on the laptop it had zero problems connecting to the network, and it makes no damn sense why I was able to connect intially but each time after that it times out. My router has no problems.
    I did a forum search and someone suggested that this was because of a "bug" and to delete the file "/var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-wlan0.lease" file. I did this, and was able to connect successfully. But this is not a solution; am I really supposed to delete the lease EVERY time I reconnect/reboot the machine? Doesn't make any sense at all.
    Can ANYONE please help on this? I can post whatever config file/log info you need. This seems like it should be a simple setup, but I've come to realize nothing's ever simple in the linux world.... btw my network uses WPA2. There wasn't anything in the wiki about WPA2 (must be really really old, huh?); could this be part of the problem?

    Alternatively, try adding
    PRE_UP=' [ -e /var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-wlan0.lease ] && rm /var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-wlan0.lease '
    to the profile with the problem.
    Edit: I misspelled "dhcpcd" in the code above.

  • WIFI problem on Treo Pro

    I have a Treo Pro without the data plan on At&t.  I have been able to use the internet fine using wifi connections.  I noticed today that At&t has been charging me for data I have been using.  I must have accidently been using their data plan also so I put a block on data on the phone.  Now I can't access the interent when I am connected to wifi.  I am connected to an open network, but when I open the interent I get the message, "The pate cannot be found.  Check the name and try again"
    Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Thanks, but when I asked the question I didn't setup a dual boot, I only could start on arch.
    I've found where the problem is. Fortunately it's not a hardware issue, it's a issue with NetworkManager. Disabling network manager and replacing it with netcfg solved the problem. Now I have to investigate why network manager is faulty in the machine (not only on arch, it randomly failed on ubuntu 14.04; maybe it's a driver problem as you suggest). Nevermind, as this issue is not related with the hardware this post has nosense in this subforum. I'll mark it as 'solved'
