NetRestore sometimes sets computer name correctly, sometimes doesn't

I'm creating a number of NetRestore images using SIU. The images themselves apply correctly, but something is broken in the naming of the machines. I've had intermittent success getting the workflow component to work that is supposed to name machines based on Ethernet MAC address. I found the format of the .txt file, but I can't figure out why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
To be clear, if an image "works," every Mac that is imaged by it gets named correctly (I'm filtering MAC addresses using NetBoot service in Server Admin). But if an image doesn't work, it never works on any of the Macs that it is supposed to name. Everything else seems to work fine.
Does anyone have any tips for how to make this work more consistently? Is there something finicky about the .txt files that I missed? I created them in TextWrangler, if that makes any difference.

Hi Benjamin,
You may find clues in the system log on your target machines.

  • Set Computer name by computers serial number ?

    Hi guys!
    I need a simple script or something to set computer name(serial number) and add computer to our domain. Computer name should be for laptop, LT-"serialno" and for Desktop it should be DT-"serialno"
    Is there a simple way to fix this? I have tried WSname, but no luck there. My scripting skills are equal with zero.
    Thx for all help and tips!

  • Setting computer name on a VM created from template (SCSM, SCVMM and SCORCH)

    We've set up some basic server provisioning automation to see how it works. It's a fairly simple setup so far:
    1. User submits ticket via the SCSM portal; the ticket includes the desired machine name.
    2. Ticket requires our team's approval before the workflow continues into Orchestrator.
    3. If approved, an Orchestrator runbook is kicked off, using SCVMM to create the server from a template.
    The resulting server has the correct machine name in SCVMM, but the machine name inside the OS is randomly generated (the template currently has * in OS Configuraiton -> Identity Information in the VM Template properties).
    What's the best way to make the computer name inside the OS reflect the desired machine name? I can think of a number of ways we could accomplish this, but I don't know SCORCH/VMM that well yet. I'm wondering if I have overlooked something simple inside
    the existing process we're using. I suspect that, if there is an easy solution, it would lie in VMM.
    Many thanks for your time and consideration.

    I've got the Guest OS Profile partially working, but frustratingly, it doesn't seem to be applying all of the settings.
    Here is what I have done so far:
    1. A Guest OS Profile has been set up which includes all of the settings I am currently trying to test: domain join, feature installation (nothing fancy for now, just Powershell and Telnet Client), and a KMS key for Server 2012.,
    2. Orchestrator Runbook gets the existing OS Profile, creates a new one based on the VM, and uses the parameter -ComputerName to pass the name of the VM to the Guest OS Profile. The new Guest OS PRofile is showing up correctly in VMM, with the right settings.
    3. The runbook then deploys the new VM from template, using the newly set up Guest OS Profile. The machine is set up correctly, and will boot. Not all of the settings from the Guest OS Profile transfer over, however. The Domain Join and KMS portions work
    without a problem. The features I have tried to add are not installed, though, and the computer name remains randomly generated.
    I know the Guest OS Profile must be getting used, since the machine gets domain joined; the template does not include domain join credentials. What I can't work out is why some of the settings are being applied while others are not.

  • [SOLVED] Set computer name (?)

    Hey,
    whenever I start Arch I get the message 'Arch Linux x.x.x-x-Arch ((none)) (ttyx). Thus, logging in I get username@(none).
    How do I get rid of the (none)? Isn't that suppose to be my computer name? If so, how do I rename my computer?
    Sorry for bugging with newbie questions, but can't seem to find a useful answer, probably due to me not understanding where the problem lies.
    Thanks!

  • Create a TS Variable in MDT 2013 to set Computer Name to Wifi Mac Address

    Hello,
    I'm currently using the following rule to pick up the MAC address of the computer:
    OSDComputername=#Right(Replace("X%macaddress001%",":",""),15)#
    I have created an image for the Linx Tablets, which don't have an ethernet MAC Address, so I'd like to use the Wifi address instead (which would also help with network registration in our environment).  Does anybody have a solution?
    Thank you,
    Garin

    Hi,
    I highly recommend asking this question in the MDT forum, since this question is very MDT-specific:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=mdt&filter=alltypes&sort=lastpostdesc
    Perhaps someone who is familiar with MDT will see this, but I still think you stand a much better chance at getting a good answer over in the MDT forum.
    Good luck.

  • Computer Name Keeps Changing

    In the system preferences sharing where you go to set  "Computer name" I am noticing that mine says "iMac (3)" I have changed it back but keeps renaming the name "iMac (1),iMac (2), iMac (3) and so on,,, ".   My network hasn't changed, haven't added or removed anything. This Only happens when System goes to sleep. Any Help on this???

    I had the same problem. I solved it. I use an Apple Airport Extreme. I had connected my computer to the Airport Extreme using an ethernet cable and I also activated WiFi on my computer.  My computer kept changing names. To correct this i deactivated WiFi on my computer, connecting to the internet only through the ethernet cable attached to the Airport Extreme. No more name changing.

  • Netboot computers and netbooted computer name problems

    i have 14 imacs that i netboot. prior to tiger the netbooted computer names would be assigned noramlly say netboot001, netboot002 up to 14.
    with tiger and the system image utility when i run a new netboot image sometimes the computer name is netboot001 etc and sometimes it replicates out say frederick charrons computer(1), frederick charrons computer(2).
    i assume that there is a problem in the way the computer names are dished out to the netbooted imaces and there fore i assume there may be a potential for prblems with information back and forth to the server. can anyone help me with this and offer a solution that i may be missing.
    i have been netbooting imaces since imacs and server were made available and this is the only time that i hav experienced this problem, ile with tiger server.
    osx server   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    There is not a problem with having identical usernames on two different computers. You also suggested the "Computer name" was the same. Is this the computer name at the top of the "Sharing" preference panel? If so, those need to be different.

  • Make a Mac's Computer Name the Same as it's OD  Computer Record Name?

    I heard someone mention that its possible (at least in 10.5 server) to make a Mac's Computer name become exactly as its OD Computer Record name is (at the time of binding). I assume this would be a setting in Server Admin/OD or in WGM perhaps. I cant find the setting. Can you locate it for me?
    Im running a test Leopard OD master in Advanced mode on an Xserve Xeon.

    OK, let me give you a similar scenario regarding computer record names.
    I had previously setup OD to set computer names based the computer record name once the Macs were bound to OD.
    I decided later that that naming scheme will not work (I need the computer (host) name and the OD computer record name to be different for logisitical reasons - long story). I unbound my OD clients and trash all LDAP settings to start over from scratch. One problem:
    I cant for the life of me find that checkbox on my OD server to disable that setting. I have looked everywhere. I check WGM and Server Admin too. The post you made earlier doesn't look like the steps I took to setup the option to force the computer name from the record name. I simply checked a box. I also did enable authenticated binding either.
    I have a test OD lab right now. None of the servers and clients are in production, so I have the luxury of experimenting a little before we go live in Q1 2008.

  • Computer name changed secretly

    I found that sometimes the computer name had been changed ...
    For example, from ABC to ABC (1). And if ABC (1) exists then the name changed to ABC (2).
    I don't know when it had been changed and it sometimes give me trouble. When time machine is used a new folder with new computer name will be created.
    How to fix the computer name?

    Here I also have an iMac that since installing Snow Leopard, approx. once a week, changes it's name to add a (2) at the end.
    There is definitely no machine on the network that has the same name - but I can see that the mdnsresponder thinks so - and the duplicate appears to be my Time Capsule.
    My suspicion is that this might be caused by the Bonjour Sleep Proxy functionality introduced with Snow Leopard, since for that, the iMac delegates it's identity to the Time Capsule to handle incoming requests while it's sleeping.
    Here's what I saw in the console log:

  • Command to Open "Computer Name/Domain Changes" window

    Running the commands SystemPropertiesComputerName or "sysdm.cpl" in command line will open the System Properties window. I still have to click on the "Change" button to
    get to the Computer Name/Domain Changes window. Is there a command to get to the
    Computer Name/Domain Changes window directly? I have been searching the internet for several days. I've also tried using SendKeys (batch file, VBScript, and in PowerShell) and to send two TABS
    and an ENTER key but I can't get it to work. The command doesn't seem to work on the
    System Properties window.

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
    I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
    I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
    Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
    Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
    The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
    I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
    As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
    The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

    Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • What happened to forcing Computer Name of managed clients?

    In the 10.4 Version of WGM you can edit a computer inside a computer group and get "Use this name as the Computer Name for managed clients". This has since disappeared as far as I can see in the Leopard version of WGM. So far I've been lucky with just using the older version after I add the computer in but it's a pain to use two instances of WGM to add stuff. In inspector I could also just add the follwing MCXFlags:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>usecomp_name_for_machinename</key>
    <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Am I looking in the wrong place or was this removed?

    It's moved to Computer / Preferences / Login / Options. The checkbox says "Set computer name to computer record name".

  • OSD Computer Name

    I have seen quite a few posts here about setting the computer name by prompting the user and/or using the MDT.  My goal is to do bare-metal, "unknown" builds that assign the computer name to be the serial number from the BIOS.  All our machines are Dell.  I would like to not have to integrate the MDT if possible, but if the MDT is the only way to do it, so be it.
    Thanks in advance.

    I created the Set Task Sequence Variable step before Apply Windows Settings step... I wouldn't know how to "inject" the %SERIALNUMBER% into the Apply Windows Settings step if I wanted to...

  • Why does the "Computer Name" sometimes change?

                    Not a big deal, just curious, why does the "computer name" sometimes change?
                     The name will be the same, but it will add a number....2,3,4...I always change it back so it doesn't have a numeric value next to it, but just wondering why it happens.
                                            Thanks.

    Can also occur after your computer is put to sleep and then wakes back up or after your computer is force quit and immediately restarted. Sometimes the router 'believes' the computer is still connected when it actually isn't. When that computer re-establishes a connection the router 'tells' the computer that a computer with that name already exists so it has to change its name. By default a computer running MacOS adds a number (or increments its number) when this happens.
