Netscape Messaging Server 4.1 timeouts in WebMail at LOGIN

Netscape Messaging Server 4.1 times out users in WebMail at LOGIN, but from
seemingly random sites.
<P>
Use configutil, found in the <server-root>/msg-<identifier>/ directory as follows:
<P>
./configutil -o service.http.ipsecurity -v no

My SMTP log is already in debug mode, yet it doesnt show any information from the filter. The only area where I was able to find any reference to the UBE filters was in the log that I posted in my original post.
I've tried changing the COPY commands to DROP, yet it stll doesn't work.
I even tried:
$ALL DROP deadmail
and
$ALL DROP [email protected]
I'm starting to think that the UBE filters for 4.15 just don't work as the above should have worked fine.
Unfortunately, upgrading isn't an option right now, so I'm stuck with what I have.... So, any help would be great.
Thanks,
Arron

  • Netscape Messaging Server & iPlanet Web Server question

The netscape messaging server (v 4.1) is receiving emails which are html-only formatted. Through webmail, the body appears to be empty. When checking the message store, the message is not empty. When accessing through webmail, we are able to view the emails that arrive in the html and plain text formats (both together) or plain text, but not those that arrive html-only. The webserver is iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition.
Is there any workaround for that, or is it a limitation of the web server?

    WEll, um,
    1. Netscape Messaging Server 4.xx, all versions have been End Of Support life for over 2 years.
    2. There is no web server involved, here. Messaging itself serves the http interface.
    3. Yes, there is a workaround. Upgrade. You're using very old bits, and the only real answer is for you to use a current product, if you need current features.
Messaging Server 5.2p2 is considered "mature", though still under support. No new features are getting added.
Messaging Server 6.2 is the current product. It's part of the Sun Java Enterprise System, and may be downloaded.

  • Is there a possibility by which i can configure Netscape Messaging server as a POP server.

I'm running Netscape Messaging server on Solaris 8 is there a provision to configure the NMS as a POP server.SO user's could download the mail through mail clients like Outlook express.

Which version is it? Netscape 4.x or Iplanet 5.x? In both cases the information to configure your mailrelay server as a pop3-server is contained in the administration guide. There you can find everything there is to know about pop3. And it is a lot...
The manuals can be found on the internet: www.iplanet.com.
    Good luck.

  • Migrating from Netscape Messaging Server 4.15 Plug-in to iPlanet Messaging Server 5.1 Channel

    Hi, there.
I wrote a custom plug-in for Netscape Messaging Server 4.15. The client for
whom I did this is now upgrading to iPlanet Messaging Server 5.1 and has
requested that I update the custom plug-in accordingly. Unfortunately, as
specified in the iPlanet migration documents, you have to re-code the
plug-in as a channel to get it to work under iPlanet Messaging Server...
I've scoured the documentation about how to go about doing this, but I don't
know how to get started as I don't know anything about writing a channel.
The plug-in processes incoming messages to see if they were sent from a
specific domain. It then adds an arbitrary signature to each appropriate
MIME part in the message before letting the messaging server relay it.
    1. Can anyone direct me to some explicit directions about how to write a
channel for iPlanet Messaging Server? The documentation for Netscape
Messaging Server was extremely helpful; I haven't found anything equivalent
    for iPlanet channels.
    2. Channels run as daemons? Do you have to start them when the machine
boots, or are they started for you by the MTA as a result of the channel
    configuration file?
    3. Do channels listen with sockets on a particular port for communication?
Do I have to parse incoming data and encode outgoing data as if it was an
    SMTP communication?
    4. Can an SMTP channel co-exist with other SMTP channels on the same
machine? Do the channels have to listen on unique ports? (Sorry, my socket
    programming is a little rusty.)
    Anxiously awaiting your reply...
    Sean Dockery
    [email protected]

What is the expected result of the plug-in?
Also, if you set the smtp log level to debug do you see it initializing the plugin at startup time and also entering the plugin during the smtp-accepts?

  • Mail.app and Netscape Messaging Server v3.6

We are trying to track down performance issues with Mail.app in both Tiger and Panther. Issues include how long it takes to download large attachments (PDFs upwards of 10MB), how long it takes to synchronize and cache, and other things that appear in Mail's activity window and never go away. Downloading large attachments puts a large CPU load on our mail server. We are looking at all variables -- switches, network configs, local client settings, etc. We are on a switched network with a mix of Gig and 100BT to the desktops. But my question here is: What might be the advantage of upgrading to a newer mail server? Our Netscape 3.6 software is very old, but the Sun hardware it lives on had a CPU upgrade last year. Even though the IMAP protocol itself has been pretty stable for years, would we find newer platforms more efficient with modern needs such as large attachments and inboxes that receive dozens of messages a day?

Wow, this is dusting off the cobwebs. NS 3.X has a different format for mail message, the IMAP data is contained in the first 400 bytes (or so) of the message file. So sending them through the deliver program is not an option, unless you strip the bytes off.
When you ran upgrade on an individual user, did you first remove the 4.15 mailbox with mboxutil -d?

  • Netscape Messaging Server 4.15 patch 6

This is probably not the right newsgroup for this, but I can't find any for
    this product.
Anyway, we experience that our smtpd daemon uses approx. 100% of the CPU and
after a while (some hours) it stops handling anymore smtp requests. The
only solution is to restart the service and it will work for yet some more
    hours.
Anyone have an idea on what this problem might be, or a more suitable
    newsgroup to post it on?

    Hi,
Please check if you have disabled the autodisconnect feature of the Server service. On Windows servers it can be configured through the Autodisconnect registry key.

CIFS and SMB Timeouts in Windows
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/openspecification/archive/2013/03/19/cifs-and-smb-timeouts-in-windows.aspx
Based on the research, as the open shared folder is in a SMB session, the default timeout for SMB session is 15 minutes. If the SMB session is inactive for 15 minutes the server will send a TCP reset to close the SMB connection. Until the
Autodisconnect timer is reached, the server will send an NBT keep-alive packet every two minutes. If a client or server application is not written to properly handle network delays, it may terminate the session prior to the default timeout
    period.

If you wanted to get the GOST cipher suite implemented the best place to start would be to ask on the mozilla newsgroup (mozilla.dev.tech.crypto) although as was pointed our by a Messaging Server developer, implementing the GOST suite is far from straight-forward which may explain why nobody has implemented it till now.
I did however find the following RFC which may help your endeavours:

  • Question about active queue and related msg of Nets.Messaging server 4.15

I have Netscape Messaging Server 4.15 Patch 7 (buil
t Sep 11 2001). I see that the number of messages in active queue viewed as number of file (ls -l queue/messages | wc -l) doesn't matches with the number of messages that I see in Mailbox-deliver as showed by sendmail -bp command.
    Why?
Very often number of file are few hundred, when the emulator of sendmail shows only twenty-thirty messages.
And I see that the messages in active queue (if I open them with commands like more, view...) are all for local domains on server, so mailbox-deliver.
There are sometimes a lot of messages of months ago...
    Thank you very much
