Netware 65sp7-edir8.8sp-GW8.0.2-91781 crashs now and then

Last year we had lot off crashes with our GW8.02 server on Netware 6.5sp7, mostly because the soap.nlm. The solution was patch GW8.0.2-91781 which was giving me from Novell-support.
In the meantime Novell bring out patch GW8.0.2sp2 HP1, but after reading that a lot of people have problems with HP1 and MobileSync we decide, to wait for HP2.
Till January 10 2011 the GroupWise server was stable, but on January 10 the processor is going to 98-100% cpu and we got our first ABEND this year. Strange, but can happen we thought.
On January 14 server ABEND and January 19 again ABEND.
The abend.log says something about cpu 0 (Thread .....) is on a NO SLEEP state or Address (0xF3AFF2AE) exceeds valid memory limit.
Here is short version of our ABEND.log

This is a classical Document Viewer Agent abend, which on Netware will
simply not be solveable without completely disabling it.
If you want to go that route, add /gwdvadisable to your webaccess .waa
file. This will disable all inline rendering of documents and
attachments in webaccess (users will have to download attachments and
view them locally, instead of having them rendered to HTML directly).
That abend can and will hit you any time, for all times, and as I said,
on Netware is not and will never be solved or solveable. It all depends
on which attachments your users will attempt to view, and how often they
do that.

  • Crashing Apps and Aqua corruption on 1.8SP

I have a G5 1.8 SP here which has gone mad (most succinct way of describing its behaviour!)
The two major symptoms are corruption in the Aqua interface (usually on type) and most applications unexpectedly quitting. Screenshots can be seen at http://web.mac.com/chrishands/iWeb/Temp/
I've tried Hardware Test and TechToolPro, but the hardware test passes everything and TTP either passes or unexpectedly quits. I strongly suspect a hardware problem as the problem persists no matter what volume is used to boot - internal, external or optical.

If that doesn't do the trick then, perhaps it is actually a motherboard gone mad since the CPU chip itself was what caused my G3 to have those display issues. Unless you know someone who has, or yourself have, a similar Mac that you can swap boards with you may have rely on service - but try the fresh OS 1st. Nothing worse than when a Mac goes mad...

  • SLP randomly not working

We are using DHCP to hand out SLP information at my school district. Here
is our current setup w/regards to SLP:
    2 SLP DAs
SLP Container object is directly underneath the organization and is its
    own partition
Both DAs hold R/W replicas of the SLP partition
SLP.CFG on every server in the district points to these two DAS
SLP.CFG on the two DAs point to eachother, but not themselves
SLPDA eDir objects are inside the SLP container, along with our scope
    'SLP_SCOPE'
DHCP configured with options 78 and 79 to hand out the IPs of the two DAs
and the name of the scope
About 75 Netware 6.5 SP6 servers spread over a school district roughly the
    size of West Virginia
SLP discovery options on the SA servers is set to 12
As for the problem...it only started recently (past few weeks) and as far
as I know we didn't make any major changes. Most people in the district
get their SLP just fine. But every now and then, on random computers we
get error messages that some login script program couldn't run, only to
find out that our script said 'run some program from
\serverNamedataprog.exe' and the client couldn't resolve the server name.
Typing 'slpinfo /d' on the client reveals that they have no DAs listed.
Restarting or release/renew of their IP fixes its most of the time. Some
times we have to restart multiple times. The computers with this problem
are all different models, different versions of the Novell Client, and at
different geographical sites. Also, entering in the slp scope name and DA
addresses in the client fixes the problem immediately.
The other odd thing with SLP that may/may not be related is that we
recently (4 months ago) changed our partitions around (we used to have one
partition for every school (40+), now we have 10 with schools grouped
geographically in them). But when I look at the SLP services listed under
SLP_SCOPE in ConsoleOne, there are ndap_novell services listed for all the
old school partitions. I've tried deleting them, but they reappear.
Timesync is running perfectly, none out in a long time. Replicas are
syncing fine, a few can lag by about 20 minutes (but not the SLP
partition). DSExpert claims everything is fine (although I don't believe
it when it says everything is wrong either...). Is there a way to figure
out how these old partitions are re-registering themselves? Also, every
server has been checked for external reference errors and obits, all clean.
Whew...if you've made it this far, thanks for reading and hopefully
someone knows much much more than me about SLP.
    Thanks,
    -Bill

The DHCP requests to get SLP information are done by the client. Therefore
it is important that the SLP configuration in the client is such that it
    actually uses DHCP

You should check the details of the "rogue" NDAP entries. They should
include the IP address of the machine advertising these services and you
will know why they are still there.

  • TSAFS not communicating with NetBackup

Hi! I've got a NetWare 6.5 sp7 system, and Symantec NetBackup 6.5.3 software running on top of another system running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 update 5. I'm attempting to back up GroupWise off the NetWare system to the NetBackup/Red Hat system, and the backup fails with the following error:
"Error bpbrm from client BLAH: ERR - unable to connect to service: BLAH\BLAH.GroupWiseSystem\BLAH (SMS: FFFEFFF7: Unknown SMS error) none of the files in the file list exist (71)"
The NBU policy is a Standard policy, as it is using the Target method. The Backup Selections is correct (the target name preceded by a '/'), so it's not that. The NBU software on the backup server can query the Novell client (NetWare NBU Client 6.5) with no problem. On the NetWare server BLAH, if I go into the NetBackup console and then go into Target Configuration, the GroupWise target is already defined. However, if I attempt to List/Display Diagnostic Information, at the end, it says this:
    Target: GRPWISE
    Target SMDR: BLAH
    Target TSA: BLAH.GroupWise System
    Visible Target Services:
    BLAH
error - SMS: FFFDFFDD: Unknown SMS error
    Target Service: BLAH
    Target Username: .admin.mmc
No connection established - SMS: FFFDFFC5: Unknown SMS error
The SMDR, TSAFS, TSAFSGW and other required modules are up and running. I've upgraded the TSAFS related files on BLAH to the latest, TSA5UP23.ZIP, and carefully backed up the old TSAFS files before upgrading, and nothing changes. Has anyone seen an error like this before? Does anyone know how to resolve this SMS error, let alone what it means? Google gives almost no hits at all on those error codes, and these forums don't have anything on them that I can find (perhaps I'm not looking hard enough).

  • FTPS/Implicit SSL connections filter

BorderManager 3.8 on NetWare 5.1 - I have plenty of successful
ftp-port-pasv-st exceptions that I use, but now I need one for an
FTPS/Implicit SSL connection, which *should* user port 990. But when I
define an exception (creating a new packet type, TCP, All source ports to
990, stateful) I'm able to connect, but I cannot browse folders or transfer
files. For grins I even tried making an exception for ALL TCP ports from my
FTP PC to their server - oddly, that wouldn't allow me to connect at ALL.
Drop filters, and I can get it to work just fine. I would do a TCPIP DEBUG =
0, but when I do that, BorderManager usually crashes now, and last time it
crashed, it would immediately abend on reboot, and it took me 4 hours to
    crawl out of this hole.
I just recently got brave enough to make new filters again (it was making
them all disappear every time I made a change for the longest time).
Anyone have any experience with this form of FTP? I've done FTP of course,
SFTP, and other secure FTP transfers, but this is the first vendor who want
FTPS/Implicit SSL, which I understand is not nearly as prevalent as Explicit
    SSL.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

The problem here is that each time you do a directory listing or try
to upload/download a file in FTP protocol you are using a passive
client connection. With each passive connection the server assigns a
port that the client should connect to for initiating the transfer.
Unless you specify a port range to use within the FTP server software,
this is generally a random open port on the server > 1024. Naturally,
this can make configuring your firewall a bit more difficult :( The
solution to this is to configure your server to use a fixed port range
for passive FTP connections e.g. 1200-1300. Then in your firewall you
can configure it to allow inbound connections on these ports. Most
servers support passive port range configuration. see your server
docs for details on how to do this. One such platform-independent
server that supports this is jscape secure ftp server ...

  • Imaging from external DVD player or an external usb hard drive

    Hey,
At the High School i work at we are running Netware 6.0 SP5 and Zenworks
4.01 ir6. We have Zen Partitions installed on most computers to store a
local image in case the the computer needs to be re-imaged.
However, we have a dilemma. Every now and then a hard drive will go in a
    computer.
When we replace the hard drive with a new one, we install the Zen
Partition, do the config and then our last step is to bring down an image.
Unfortunately our only means of dropping down an image is from the network
either through normal imaging or through multicast sessions.
When we drop an image down from the network which takes up network
bandwidth, it causes slow downs on the users computers and they start
complaining. Our network is running at 100mb.
Is there any way possible to image from an external DVD player or an
external usb hard drive when dropping down an image to a new hard drive in
the computer? Currently I have all my Zen Images on the external USB
Maxtor 160gb hard drive and I also have Zen Images burnt to DVD's.
If so, how do I go about doing this and is there documents on doing this?
    Thanks!!!

  • Really persistent file lock

I've got a problem where connections with certain file locks do not seem to close for more then a day even on reboot / shutdown of the client.
We have a .net/C# based document processor that runs on every user session that requires it that manages to put some weird file lock on its log files that are located on users home directory's (unable to change that).
For some reason our OES11 server every now and then does not close the connection holding the log file open and users can not start the processor in the morning because it can not access its own log file.
This -occasionally- happens with normal workstations running XP but more frequently on Win2k8r2 with Xenapp although all our Xenapp servers get rebooted daily.
I would expect the OES server closing the connections upon reboot of the Xenapp servers or when the workstation is turned off for 10+ hours. It would appear it takes somewhere over 24 hours for the connection / lock to clear but I have nothing to back this up.
Can anybody explain this behaviour and/or come up with possible workarounds, I always assumed connections were actively checked to see if they were alive.
I also need to have a talk with the people where this amazing piece of .NET software came from about the way they lock files.
    Thanks

The default watchdog timeout process isn't as effective as it used to be
on NetWare, but there are things you can do. I had hit it with OES2 and
    mostly resolved with http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7004848

  • Problem with junkmail folders after moving gwia from netware to linux

Recently moved our gwia that handles internet email from Netware to Sles
11 GW8.0.3 hp3. Email is moving in and out ok, but I'm getting some
really weird strangeness with Junkmail settings. Just like the old
gwia, this gwia has it's own domain/mta. Postoffices are under
    different domains/mta's.
    1. Email flagged with "x-spam-flag: yes" is no longer automatically
being moved to the junkmail folder. Yes the box is checked for this
particular's gwia settings, and I've even uncommented it in the gwia.cfg
file to to be sure it's enabled.
    2. With the "view" column enabled in the client I can see that normal
email coming in gets set with the tag "internet" Email coming in with
"x-spam-flag: yes" in the header gets set with the tag "IPM.Novell.ND"
If I right click on one these to try to manually set it as junkmail, I
get a message that the message is "Not Eligible for Junk Mail Handling"
and when I click on that a window pops up saying "This is a POP message.
Only internet mail sent to your Groupwise account is eligible for Junk
    Mail Handling"
For whatever reason instead of moving the email to the junkmail folder
when the x-spam-flag is set, it changes it to type IPM.Novell.ND and
then the client thinks that it's some sort of POP message instead of an
internet email. If I redirect incoming email back through the old
Netware gwia instead, everything works fine.
What could possibly be going on?

Did you create a new Gateway ( gwia ) object? Or recycle the old one ( which is usually a huge no-no. ) I suspect you created a new one, as you refer to the old NetWare GWIA. But you never know.

Its only enabled if the run-time config says it is. ;-) Look at the settings listed in the HTTP console for the GWIA or the GWIA logs, which dumps the settings actually being used. You may find the setting is not really effective. Check for differences between the two GWIAs effective config.... something may stick out.
In the message properties there is a junk mail handling section, can you give us an example of working / non-working versions?

  • How to move GWIA 8 to new netware server

I have a server that I managed to get back up and running my GWIA 8 and a secondary MTA and POA. How do I transfer the GWIA/MTA/POA to the new Netware 6.5 server. I dont trust the current server.
While in panic mode, I tried installing it on the new server directly but it wouldn't accept the username / password during the Edirectory login age.

  • Netware 6.0 SP5 Apache/Tomcat

I am setting up a New install Netware 6.0 server and have netware all patched up with sp5, & BM 3.7 patched up. This server will not be located in my office so I wanted to try to get the web app side up to date. I want to use Imanager to remotely check the health etc... I know this is an older version of Netware but this is a temporary replacement server and we should only be using this server for a year or 18 months max and we will no longer have a need for it. I say all that to ask how to upgrade Apache & Tomcat so I manager will work. I have EDIR 8.7.3 and the Novell JVM is at 1.4.2.04. The additional requirements for Imanager 2.01 are Tomcat 3.3, Tomcat 4 and Apache 1.3. Currently the server has Tomcat 3.3 installed and Apache 1.03. I can find a TID (10071533) on upgrading Tomcat 3.3 to Tomcat 4 on Netware 6.0 but cannot find the install file "Tomcat4.04b2", or any other variant. So do I need to get a newer version or what? I also need to update the Apache and cannot seem to find the correct files for that either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Certainly with Apache it's a case of extracting the NLMs from the
archive and then copying over the old ones.
    Personally I
    * download the update
    * extract to a directory on my local machine
    * rename the configuration files in the local copy to prevent actual
configuration files on server being overwritten
    * make a copy of sys:\apache or sys:\apache2 (depending on which I'm
    updating)
    * copy the local copy over to the server, overwriting existing files
(remember we've just renamed the config files)
    * restart Apache
    Hope this helps.

  • Restoring eDirectory info from Netware 5.1 to 6.5.

What are the chances of restoring eDirectory info from a Netware 5.1 server to a NetWare6.5SP8 server?
My network is a mixture of NW6.5SP8 and OES 11SP2 servers, with a single exception.
Due to organizational politics, we have a department that has kept an old NetWare 5.1 server running.
That server crashed yesterday (finally!), and has been removed from eDirectory.
Amidst my joy, however, there is a problem:
My server backup software had never had any ACL-related problems when I've used it to restore data to my NW6.5 or OES11 servers.
That includes restoring data to a different server.
I had no problems restoring the data from this 5.1 server to another location, but no ACL information was included in the restoration.
My only desire at this point is to find a way to discover the ACL information with regard to that data. There were a LOT of group-related access rights on this server.
Even though it wouldn't be my responsibility to recreate those rights, I'd like to see if I can recover it somehow.
What would be the expected result of attempting to restore both the data and the eDirectory info from tape backup of the NetWare 5.1 server to a newly created NW6.5SP8 server?
I don't care how much the server complains about not seeing the rest of the network, as long as I can log into it and look at the file rights information.
If I were to create a new server in its own tree, isolated from the production network, and attempt to restore both data and eDirectory to the server, would it be logical to expect the ACl information to be restored?
I may still have a NW5.1 server CD around somewhere, but if I can accomplish my goal with a NW6.5 server, it'd be faster.
    Any thoughts are welcome.

Thank you for your response, Anders
Yes, I'm referring to file rights.
    I'm confused, then.
I have always thought that trustee rights involved both eDirectory and the file system; that without eDirectory the file system wouldn't be able to correlate the trustee rights to eDirectory objects (users, groups, etc...).
For instance, I have an OES 11 server that does not use the NSS file system.
I set it up as an NCP server and used the Migration utility to copy files from an NW6.5 server to its ext3 volume
The trustee rights were retained for those files.
I assumed that this was due to the eDirectory information.
If trustee rights are contained in the file system, this becomes even more mysterious to me.
I know for a fact that the data NSS volume on the crashed server had a LOT of trustee rights assignments; this group has a lot of programs that can't be allowed to see each others' data.
Their IT person also backs up the same data, although with a different backup program.
Restoration from his backup had the same result; no trustee rights.
The crashed server still exists, although its SYS volume is corrupted.
Both its SYS volume and it's data volume reside on the same drive, which is mirrored within NetWare.
My next thought was to mount those drives in another computer and see if the data volume remains un-corrupted.

  • Problem instaling Subscriber in netware cluster

    Hello.
I am using ZSM 7.0.1 installation program and trying to install only
subscriber functinality on a cluster OES Netware with Sp5.
The installation says it goes successful in the 2 logfiles that comes up
after the installation but when I try to offline and then online the
cluster-volume with the ZSM7 installed on it it goes into comatose because
the zfs.ncf is missing in the zenworks folder on the volume. I can not find
the file on any other volume on the server. I also have the ZDM701 installed
on the server before I install ZSM701 on it. The ZDM701 install was totaly
fine and it works great. The only ZDM701 services installed on the server on
the same volume is WOL, Import and Removal.
So my question is, how am I supose to get the right files and folders into
the cluster and to get it work. It should not be a problem.
Does anyone no what to do.
    Thanks
    Best regards Jonas Rydstrom

ZSM is supported on a cluster, you have to choose though to have either a
single cluster resource installed with ZSM or installing in on the
individual nodes. In this case it looks like Jonas installed ZSM on a
cluster resource, that's supposed to work, not sure why zfs.ncf isn't there.

  • ZfD3.2, NetWare 6.0, XPsp2, will it work?

I have a mixed TCP/IPX network. The servers are running NetWare 6.0SP4,
    ZfD3.2sp2.
The workstations are Win2k and WinXP, client 4.83sp2, soon to be 4.90sp2
Expirements with the ZfD remote control show that we cannot make it work
at all with Windows XP SP2's firewall (even allowing an exception on
port 1761 udp/tcp). Disabling the XP firewall lets it work (sometimes)
    but negates the firewall.
Connection is incredibly unreliable, for any given pair of
source/destination workstations sometimes it works, sometimes it
doesn't, sometimes it asks the dest. for permission, mostly it just
silently does nothing. Are there any logs written anywhere to tell me
    what is failing?
Sometimes we find that we can ping the agents, see remote diagnostics,
chat, but no view and no remote control. Reliablity doesn't seem
affected by network, two workstations on the same 100M FD switch are
just as "reliable" as two on seperate campuses.
Remote update clients have been manually removed and re-added with no
    observable difference.
The "Remote management" service sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't.
"controlled' workstations that are dual screen will display on the
"controlling" workstation, but the display is never updated (if the
remote control software does connect, authenticate and then run).
    * we don't believe there are any problems with the DS
    * we don't beleive there are any problems with the network
Is anyone _reliably_ using ZfD 3.2 to remote control workstations in a
    production system? If so, how?
Where do we start looking (for log files, etc) to tell us why the remote
control software is so flaky and unreliable?
Or do people use VNC or PCanywhere in reality?
    Adrian

  • Migrating from Netware to Linux - faster "sync" ?

    Hey all,
Planning on doing a TransferID migration from netware 6.5 to linux this weekend and have done some trial data copies.. Main copy is already done, but the "sync" is still taking a large number of hours that I need to try and fit into a smaller window. Any tips on getting sync to go faster? I'm currently using the miggui but wondering if you do the commands manually, leaving things out like displaying progress bar, etc.. if it'll get to it quicker.

So, we have 6-year old HP DL-385 (no G, that's old they are) that are slower than you know what.
We're migrating to HP DL385 G6 or G7, but we're using VMware ESXi, so the target OES11 server is a Guest VM.
Both servers are on a gigabit switch.
We average approx. 15-20 GB/hour (it's not the AMOUNT of data, it's how many small files that affects things).
We're able to get the sync to fit in a small window (even our large ones, maybe 2-4 hours).
Is that not fast enough (although you may have LOTS more small files that change daily).
Basically we cart the server down, run the sync during the day until it finishes. Obviously it skips things that were in use. Then we kick everyone off the server at 3:00 and start the sync.
Since you're on NetWare to OES, I would NOT recommend rsync. The rsync on NetWare is very touchy/finicky and I don't think you can migrate trustees either.
From OES2 to OES11, you could use rsync, although I'm having mixed results with the trustees at the moment.
One thing we DO have is a "static" set of read-only data on the server, that we do NOT migrate over. We have a central office server that contains the "master" data and the clients run rsync to pull the data. So we don't even back it up either (other than the main office).
I can't remember the EXACT numbers we got when we did NetWare to OES2, but I still think we were averaging somewhere around 12-17GB/hour depending on. The key point was to make sure you were gigabit and didn't have a mis-match because someone in your datacom unit set the **** switch to 100-full or something other than auto-auto.
Oh, and if you have disk quotas, make sure that you either clear them or keep compression enabled. THAT will slow things down because if it tries to copy something, and there's not enough space, it'll retry like X times and then continue on and you find out like 10 hours later it was slow because you didn't have enough directory quota space.
