Network Adapter Security
Hello,
Some mysterious application shuts down the network adapter in my server. Does anyone know some way to secure the network adapter i.e. prevent applications from modifying network adapter settings.
Thanks
Hi,
Enabling and disabling network adapter require administrative privileges.
You may try to set UAC to high to see if the issue persists.
If it does, please locate the exact process which did this, you may use Process Monitor.
More information for you:

We seem to be having an issue recently after introducing new Windows Server 2012 R2 servers where they fail to register DNS correctly. The Windows Firewall is off and the servers are on the same VLAN with no firewalls between them.
When I do an ipconfig /registerdns or wait 24 hours for the system to try we get the following error:
The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:
Adapter Name : {4A0ECF05-193F-4BEA-AA46-BEC593BA752B}
Host Name : SRV-DATA
Primary Domain Suffix : internal.local
DNS server list :
192.168.0.50, 192.168.0.42
Sent update to server : <?>
IP Address(es) :
192.168.0.99
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS server contacted refused the update request. The reasons for this might be (a) you are not allowed to update the specified DNS domain name, or (b) because the DNS server authoritative
for this name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.
To register the DNS host (A or AAAA) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
On our DNS server we have set for the internal.local zone Secure Updates only so that looks good because it is Active Directory that should be handling this authentication to update the record I assume. Just to mention that when also doing an ipconfig /regsiterdns
the update fails within a few seconds.

This issue is only affecting Windows Server 2012 R2 clients and testing with Windows Server 2008 R2 clients works no issues. So is this a mis-configuration or a bug with Windows 2012 R2? I have checked all DNS settings on client / server which all look good
to me so reaching out now to see if anyone has any ideas?
Environment:
- Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controllers (Forest/Domain Levels 2012 R2)
- Windows Server 2012 R2 Client machines (Physical and Virtual)
- Windows Server 2008 R2 Client machines (Physical and Virtual)The zone is configured as "Secure Only"
The PDC is the SOA for the zone
I dont have a packet capture from the DC, only the client.
The query you asked me to run is too long to paste in here, however this is the DNS zone it cannot update:

SamirHi,
according to the message, the database is not accessible. This can be because the database is down or the database connect information points e.g. to a wrong port
Frank -
Jdbc. The Network Adapter could not establish the connection. Help Please!!
I've found several responses over this issue, but none works for me.
I'm trying to setup a simple jdbc connection from a simple program.
Platform:
Fedora Core 4 (FC4) on AMD 64 bits
Java 1.4.2_04 (64 bits)
ORacle 10g or Oracle 9.2.0.4 (none works);
Tips:
- I can't connect to a remote server, nor to a local server
- I can connect using SQLplus
- TNSPing works fine
- Listener it's up
- my connection string is jdbc:oracle:thin:user/name@host:port:sid
- Also try jdbc:oracle:thin:user/name@//host:port/sid
- I'v tryied with classes12.jar, odbj14.jar
- my hostname it's ok.
I've monitored ip traffic on remote computer. While using TNSPING I detect activity. While using jdbc, no.
Please, any idea??Thanks for your reply.
To your questions:
- I´v tried both IP, host, and even host.domain
- I can connect from remote workstation using toad, and from local using sqlplus.
- I can´t connect via jdbc.
Folowing:
A) my sample code
B) the stack trace
C) the listener status (from my 9i server. Also tryied another servr with 10g)
when I call this program, I´ve tried severl connection strings:
jdbc:oracle:thin:user/pass@sdd51:1521:ebf
jdbc:oracle:thin:user/pass@:sdd51.sdd.com.ar:1521:ebf
jdbc:oracle:thin:user/pass@:10.10.10.51:1521:ebf
also try the other sintax:
jdbc:oracle:thin:user/pass@//sdd51:1521/ebf
In the classpath, I´tryied:
clasess12.jar
ojdbc14.jar
nls_charset12.jar
thanks

I am not a DBA hence finding it hard to resolve the issue. Your help is highly appreciated.
Edited by: user3533384 on Jul 10, 2009 6:12 AMAre you talking about the Enterprise Manager Console provided by the oracle or some other enterprise software? If it is enterprise software then you need to the do the proper setting for network connection to database. Probably you will have to configure tnsname.ora and sqlnet.ora. Can you connect through SQL*Plus utility? Go to Run-->SQLPLUSW type in the username password and tnsnames entry for the database. See if you can connect. If not post us the error message.

Introduction to Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) version 9.x (Context Aware Security and VPN Features): FAQ from live webcastHello Namit and Rahul,
Here are few questions that came in directly during your live webcast hence posting them here so that users can benifit:
1) How is ASA CX different from other UTM solutions ?
2) How is dynamic application inspection of CX better than other inspection engines ?
3) What features or functionalities on the CX are available by default ?
4) what are the different ways we can run or install CX on the ASA platform ?
5) What VPN features are supported with multi context ASA in the 9.x release ?
6) What are the IPv6 Enhancements in the ASA version 9.x ?
Request you to please provide your responses to them individually.

Network Adapter randomly disconnects
I have a Thinkpad T60p with a 3945abg network adapter. The adapter works fine when I'm connected to a non-secured router, but randomly disconnects when connected to a WPA-2 protected router. Is there an updated driver to prevent this from happening. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. rjoeng1
Yes, it is normal. A lot of times, routers security is not compatible with wireless card. You have to keep changing setttings in router firmware until you find the best settings. Good luck.

Setup restrictions to the printer through the embaded network adapter
I've recently prochesed an HP Officejet Pro K8600dn printer.
I've connected the printer to the internet through the embaded network adapter and it worked perfectly. Howerver, the printer can be freely used by anyone in my network so i'm wondering if there's a way to block certain ip's or to configure any of that in the printer?
Also, the EWS server that came with the printer works perfectly and i can access it through my web browser. I cannot find anything about configuring allowed or blocked ip's.
Thanks in advance for any help. Not likely this printer is going to have that kind of security features. You'd be looking at something like a logon feature or Kerberos Authentication (which requires a dedicated server). This is just a simple open port that allows anything on the network to access the printer as long as it talks the right printer language.
That being said, the router configuration is a whole different animal. With the printer set up with a static IP, your router might allow you to restrict traffic to that address. You would need to check your router configuration or contact their support staff for assistance.

OnPlus 100 scan, shutting down Broadcom network adapter
I have recently installed an onPlus 100 in my network. During the scanning process, the system seems to cause the network adapters on a few of my servers to shut down for 3-5 seconds at a time.
This was not an issue with the server either before the onPlus was connected or after I shut it down.
Has anyone seen this?
Thanks,
Switch:
The server is plugged into a Cisco SG 300-52
One Server:
Dell PowerEdge R710
Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition SP2 (32 bit)
MS SQL Server 2000
Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (x4 - only one in use)
Repeating Errors:
Broadcom BCM5709C: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected.
Broadcom BCM5709C: Network controller configured for 1Gb full-duplex link.
The system detected that network adapter Broadcom...NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client) #4 was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.I have not seen that issue before however I have had an issue in the past where OnPlus was triggering failed login attempts to Windows Servers in the Security Logs. It's possible that the interface may be shutting down as some sort of protection mechanism though I would find that surprising. To address this issue, I would recommend entering admin domain credentials in the Device Options tab of the ON100 in the OnPlus portal for that client site.
The only other thing I could think of is if something in the SG 300-52 is shutting down the port the server is plugged into because of OnPlus scanning. One possible solution, if it's an option, is to change the port the ON100 is plugged into to a Trunk Port instead of an Access port and Trunk all the VLANs down to it. That will allow the ON100 to take a little more of a passive approach to collecting data about the network. All of our installs including Trunking the port. -

What should I do? And when the server starts and I run the application, I get the following error:

If the server does not wish to make this information available to the client, the status code 403 (Forbidden) can be used instead. The 410 (Gone) status code SHOULD be used if the server knows, through some internally configurable mechanism, that an old resource is permanently unavailable and has no forwarding address.
Can anybody help me...?????Can you try writing a testcase that allows you to connect to the database by going through JDBC ?

Network Adapter could not establish connection during installation
Hi,
I'm trying to install html db v10.2.0.1 and http server on the Fedora Core 4 platform and am getting a "Network Adapter could not establish connection during installation" error. This occurs after pressing Next at on the Specify HTML DB Database Details dialog box. Note that I'm not new to oracle databases or html db. I can't seem to find a similar thread on this forum related to the html db v2 install and I've read the FAQ related to the installation, making sure that I unset the TNS_ADMIN and ORACLE_HOME environment variables before launching the installer. I also checked that I can connect to the database via the listener, sqlplus sys@database as sysdba. I checked the listener status:

JDeveloper Oracle XE The Network Adapter could not establish the connectio
I installed JDeveloper 10.1.2 and oracle express on Fedora.
Now I cannot create a database connection from jdeveloper using the connection navigator
The hostname, port etc is correct.
Sqlplus and everything else regarding the database on the command line works fine.
Did I miss something ?
Maybe an environment setting ?
I did the following installation (all on the same host):
Java runtime
JDeveloper
XE Database
Testing a connection I used the Oracele Database Express Edition 2 Day PLus Java Developer Guide.
Is this documentation complete ?
Can someone also explain to me what the error message
Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection EXACTLY means ??
Where does it go wrong ?
Is there a checklist for thsi kind of thin-java connection problems ?Here some extra info, as I just said I did a default installation.
The listener is up on port 1521, see ouput:

Is the driver used by JDeveloper correct ?
There is a note on XE that the use of oracle.jdbc.driver.* classes is deprecated but still supported. -
Network Gurus: How to create a "virtual" network adapter?
We have an older Xserve (G4) with dual ethernet ports, running OS X Server 10.4 and FileMaker Server 5.5. One of the ethernet ports is connected to an internal network (behind the firewall), the other to an external network (in front of the firewall). There are appropriate IP addresses on each port. Thing is, I need FileMaker Server to be able to serve databases on BOTH network ports and it doesn’t seem to be capable. There’s a “preferred IP address” setting which lets me select the internal or external addresses, but not both.
Is there a way to create a "virtual" network adapter that I can point FileMaker Server to, but have all traffic from both ethernet ports go through this "virtual" adapter? Sort of like a 'software router'?IMHO, a far, far better solution would be to turn on the VPN server built-into your Mac OS X Server.
That way remote users can connect to the VPN (automatically, even) and get assigned an IP address in the internal network. You gain a high degree of security knowing that only known, trusted external users can access your database. If you do configure Filemaker to listed on your public interface you have no practical way of preventing rogue users from accessing your data.
Since your server already has the VPN server installed, and any modern (or even semi-modern) client should be able to connect to it, I wouldn't look any further. -

at weblogic.Server.main(Server.java:35)Hi. This is definitely an oracle-only problem, so you should simplify the problem
down to a small standalone program using the oracle thin driver to make a connection.
Once you get this to work, weblogic will also be able to do it. Make sure that
when you try to have weblogic succeed after you can do it with oracle code only,
that the driver you used to succeed with, is ahead of any weblogic jars in
the server classpath. Note that we ship a classes12.zip in our packaging, but
Oracle has since released a newer one (with the same name!) that has some bugs
fixed. Make sure the later one is the one the JVM will pick up.

WRT54GX4 Wireless Router and Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter
I just got an Xbox 360 with a Wireless Networking Adapter. The adapter will recognize the network, but won't connect to it. Even if I remove the security, the Xbox 360 won't connect. Is there something else via the router I'm supposed to be doing? I called Microsoft and they said to open the port settings, but I don't know if that's really the issue and I don't know how to do that if I need to.
The ports they gave me were:
TCP 80
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
UDP 53
TCP 53
Thanks for any help if you can.Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...
1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in 88 and End box type in 88, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box...
2) On the second line in Application box type in PQR, in the start box type in 3074 and End box type in 3074, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box...
3) On the third line in Application box type in XYZ, in the start box type in 53 and End box type in 53, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box and click on Save Settings...
3) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
4) Click on set-up and change the MTU Size to 1452 and click Save Settings...
5) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox
IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...
6) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Primary dns :- 4.2.2.2...Secondary dns :- 192.168.1.1
7) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
8) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...
