Network connections on Mac Pro

Hi all, first post.
I've just successfully (in my opinion) installed the latest Arch distrib from CD onto my 2008 Mac Pro. So far so good (and very fast!)
I've come across two issues, one being more important than the other. I cannot seem to get my network connections sorted out.
I have 2x onboard Intel ethernet connections (eth0 & eth1) and a Airport Extreme card (Broadcom BCM4328 rev 03)

Network Manager does not report any of the network interfaces. When I boot the system, "Starting Network" takes for ages and then [FAILS] as the dhcpcd daemon times out. I can however get onto the net?!? If I exclude eth1 and wlan0 from rc.conf then it all goes OK.
For what it's worth, my setup is: ADSL router connected to Mac via ethernet (Only for setup purposes), Airport express base station  connected to ADSL router. (the later being my preffered setup...no wires!)
I'm trying to unplug the ethernet link and only make use of the wireless.
I have installed the wl Broadcom module and blacklisted the older modules.

ROUTES=(!gateway)
192.168.1.254 is my DNS server in the ADSL router and also the default gateway.
My Airport Express is 10.0.1.2.
I've also had to statically assign hardware addresses to the interfaces due to the broadcom driver...
/etc/rc.d/udev/rules.d/10-networks.rules
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="00:1d:4f:ff:c3:38", NAME="wlan0"
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="00:23:32:30:e9:c0", NAME="eth0"
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ATTR{address}=="00:23:32:30:e9:c1", NAME="eth1
So, the question is, how do I get shot of the wired connection and only use wireless...but still have the option of going wired if required. Should I be using netcfg??? I haven't done anything with WPA on the wireless side yet???
Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks!

No, thanks. I've wiped Arch but will install again soon. I'll give networkmanager a go. Thanks.

  • Very slow network connection on Mac Pro

I have a FiOS connection and good speeds on my Macbook Pro and iPad. However, my 2010 Mac Pro connects like a dog. I just connected to my yahoo page which gives typical results. On my Macbook Pro it took 3-4 seconds. On my Mac Pro it took 58 seconds for the initial page content to arrive on my screen and 1:40 for the page to be fully loaded. This is typical. It doesn't matter if I connect through ethernet or wireless - same results. It doesn't matter which browser I use.
I ran speedtest and the results were actually better on the Mac Pro - I have no ide why

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Questions about setting up my network with my Mac Pro?

I'm trying to set up my network with my Mac Pro. I have two other roommates that need internet and a printer that we all need to access. The modem is with my Mac Pro in room 1, the printer is with another PC in room 2, and another PC with wifi is in room 3. What is the best way to connect all these.
My idea was to install an Airport card in my Mac Pro, then add an Airport Express station w/airtunes to room 2, to connect the PC and printer. That way, room 3 can access with wifi, and room 2 can physically plug into the Airport Express station. Problem with that is that the Airport Express Card must be professionally installed in my Mac Pro and that $80+ charge on top of the Airport Express and Aiport Card itself, turns this into a $200+ endeavor.
I also have a wireless Linksys router and Linksys WiFi USB receiver. Anybody have any other ideas?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Your plan wouldn't work anyway. The Mac Pro can not create a WDS compatible wireless network. Therefore the AirPort Express (AX) can not use WDS to wirelessly join the network. Therefore the AX's Ethernet port will not be activated.
The best solution is to buy an inexpensive wireless router [or the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)]. Connect the Mac Pro via Ethernet to the router. Add a wireless adapter to the PC in room 2. Therefore the PCs will connect wirelessly while the Mac Pro connects via Ethernet.

  • Cannot connect from Mac Pro late 2013 to Macbook Pro

Cannot connect from Mac Pro late 2013 to Macbook Pro . I have tried via ethernet and wifi. I can connect from the MBP to the Mac Pro but not vice versa. I have tried to connect to other MBP's on the same network with no luck. I try and connect as a registered user, as I usually do, with no luck. When I enter the Username and then Password the box vibrates as if the details are incorrect, they are not however.
    Thanks in advance
    Jeff

It is 'just not working' again.
To answer you question. Other sharing services work. I can connect as a guest. I can share screens. I cannot air drop.
I cannot connect either way now i.e. from Mac Pro to MBP and vice versa.
I cannot connect to my wife MBP either. My wife cannot connect to my Mac Pro.
It neither works with wifi or ethernet cable.
I can connect to my Time Capsule directly and Time Machine backups are working.
    The passwords are 100% correct.
The Mac Pro is a late 2013. Does anyone else have a similar problem? I have never suffered this one before. Seriously effecting my workflow
    Thanks

  • AppleTV connected to Mac Pro by 802.11n,  G5 on Ethernet can't see AppleTV

I hope someone can answer this one... In my house, I have an Apple Airport Extreme base station set up and broadcasting an open 802.11n (b and g compatible) wireless network. Connected to that network is my Mac Pro, which can see my AppleTV, and is set as its main source. Just to be clear, the AppleTV is connecting to the Airport Extreme base station, and NOT directly to my Mac Pro, by some kind of ad-hoc network.
My wife has a Power Mac G5, which is connected to the same Airport Extreme base station, via Ethernet, and it cannot see the AppleTV. I have iTunes 7.1.1 and Quicktime 7.1.5 installed, and I have iTunes set to search for AppleTV units, but no Apple TV is ever displayed by her iTunes.
I have the firewall on the PowerMac shut off, and have even tried messing with the Ethernet connection speed settings in Network System Prefs.
Has anybody else experienced anything like this? Does anybody have any good advice on how to fix it? I have done everything short of reset my AppleTV and Airport Extreme, and I really don't want to have to do that, then set my network back up.
    Thanx!
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Several other Macs, iPods, AppleTV
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Several other Macs, iPods, AppleTV

So, you're saying that the AppleTV will only ever appear in the list of available AppleTV devices on the initial host copy of iTunes?!Yes, once the "host" is selected. However, according to another poster, it should appear in the list of all LAN connected platforms when you initiate the "Connect to New Itunes" action and then disappear from non-selected iTunes lists once a selection is made.
If so, how do you add additional sources.Normally as explained previously. However, this assumes your wife's connection to the LAN was properly made. Can, for instance, the TV device see her computer as a "streaming" source?
I go through the 'Connect to New iTunes' option, and the authentication number appears on my TV screen, but nothing ever indicates that my wife's Power Mac has recognized the AppleTV, or vice versa. If the device doesn't show up in her iTunes at this point, I would likely try turning off the Airport card in your Mac Pro and see if this makes a difference. (I assume here that when you say the TV is connected to your mac Pro via the Airport Extreme, you mean wirelessly and not via an ether connection between extreme and TV since anything plugged into the TV ether connector would override any wireless connection attempts. (As a double check, you can look at your Settings > Network page on the TV.) Since I only have one computer/TV combination and it is such a pain switching back and forth between wired and wireless connections, I just leave mine connected by a Cat 6 cable I already had. Basically, everyone on your LAN needs to connect wirelessly or everyone nees to connect wired since you can't mix connections to the TV. In any case, if you cannot see/connect her computer with TV when yours is "disconnected," then would concentrate efforts here as it would appear she has a network problem.

  • How to connect 2 Mac Pro together ?

    Hey,
Im working on Adobe's programs. Dose anyone know if/how I can connect one mac pro to another one so the one that I'm working on will use the power of the other (memory, processor,  GPU) ? while rendering projects for example. Thanks

  • ESATA: connecting 2 mac pro's via esata to each other

has anyone tried to connect 2 mac pro's via esata directly to each other (instead of the slower ethernet connection)? i was hoping to install esata cards into the pci-express slots into 2 mac pros and instead of the usual ethernet connection between the 2 so they can file share, i was hoping for a faster estata connection if that is possible. would i see the computers in the usual finder window under "shared?" note: the mac pro's would be physically close to each other, so cable length connection is a non issue.

Hopefully no one would try this.

  • How can I connect older Mac Pro (2006) to my network wirelessly?

I just got a new (2012) MacPro that I can connect wirelessly to my network. I'm moving the old Mac Pro (2006) running OS 10.7.5 that had been connect via ethernet cable to the other end of the house. What do I need to get to connect it wirelessly?
    Thanks,
    Carmen

    Carmen,
Since the Wireless card was optional back then, you may not have gotten it in your original config?
You can verify if the hardware is installed several places, as Bob mentioned, do you have the option to enable wireless under your System Prefs \ Network (I would imagine not, since your asking). However, while very unlikely, it may be installed but your not able to see/select it for some reason?
So, just to make sure, you can also verify via looking under "System Information" (you'll want some info from there anyway).
"Apple Menu : About This Mac : More Info : System Report : Network : (look for Wi-Fi etc.)" if it exist you'll see the card and info about it.
If you don't have the option nor see a card was installed you can go about this a few ways.
    1. The absolute easiest route (to NOT have to deal with 3rd party drivers or possible 3rd party issues when you upgrade your OS etc) is check out places like Macsales and see if they have any of the original Air Port extreme cards available and install yourself. - http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/BCM94322MC/
    2. You could talk with Macsales and ask which external USB wireless card works best with your rig (least fussy) and go that route. While several brands work just fine, you just never know when something changes in an update and then your faced with the old pointing fingers thing. Rare, but still....
Also, while your in the System Information area you'll want to note your model, if it's 2006, I think that's Mac Pro 1,1 ?
    Hope that helps.

  • I am unable to connect my Mac Pro to Internet even though rest other devices are working in a Wifi network

Please help me find a solution to my problem. I am unable to connect to Wifi network at home using my Mac Pro which was working perfectly all right till yesterday. I have checked my Wifi connections and have other devices which are working fine. I tried resetting my network but still the problem exists. I am unable to figure out what next I can do to fix this? Does anyone know a solution or do you think my networking Card is not working? PLease advise?

Okay have you tried preferences>Network  then click diagnostics?
to verify if you are communicating at all go to application>Utilities>Terminal
in terminal type ping google.com should get over and over (send what you get)
    64 bytes from 173.194.34.164: icmp_seq=99 ttl=52 time=31.586 ms
if you get the above, then go to safari and re-set safari, then close safari, re-open and try google.

  • Unable to connect to Mac Pro with 2 network interfaces

The Mac Pro has 2 network interfaces. The first one is connected to a local network and the other interface has an external IP address (connected directly to the internet).
What we want to be able to do is to connect to the computer from home through the external interface and then be able to run applications on it that access a server on the local network. But, from home it is showing "Offline" in the "Current Status" column. If we try to connect it fails.
The thing I can't figure out is why I can access it from work on a different local network, using the external IP address. It works fine that way. There are no hardware firewalls that could be causing it. So either way, it is coming into the computer through the external adapter.
I'm stumped... Maybe it's something simple that I'm just missing. If you have any idea how I can access the computer from home please let me know so I can try it.
    Thanks.

Just installed TeamViewer and we're using that. Works great.

  • Third party network software to connect SnowLeopard Mac Pro to OS 9 G4?

Since Apple pulled AppleTalk from Snow Leopard, I'm wondering if there is a third party bit of software out there that would allow me to connect a MacPro running Snow Leopard to a G4 running OS 9.
In the meantime I will be going back to 10.5, but I'd much prefer to have my MacPro running the latest greatest...

It doesn't work. From what I can gather, Snow Leopard requires AFP 3.0 to connect. Mac OS 9 only went to AFP 2.2. This has nothing to to with AppleTalk, which hasn't been used for file sharing in some time. It's just an incompatible version of AFP.

  • Can't connect to Mac Pro from Macbook Pro on finder

Hi there was wondering if someone can help me out with this?
I used to be able to connect through the side panel on the finder with my macbook to my mac pro and vice versa.  I had not used this function in a few months and tried the other day and it would not work.
Ive been doing a bit of troubleshooting so far heres a oflist what ive tried so far.
Ive tried messing around with the side bar preferences.
When I click on the shift+Command+K Network I cant see the mac.
When i go command+K and connect to server at the old address that is stored it doesnt work.
Ive tried adjusting the settings in the firewall and just turning them off.
Ive tried setting the IP address manually under "DHCP with manual address" in the network preferences.
Ive tried turning off and resetting the modems and routers and toggling the air ports.
Ive made sure file sharing and screen sharing are enabled on both computers in the sharing preferences.
Tried repairing disk permissions with the "disk utility".  There were a few errors that it said could not be fixed, although it has been like that before these issues....however maybe theres a new permission issue im not sure.
I was able to see one of my neighbors computers under shared on both computers this morning.
The last time I used this function was a few months ago.  I have similar software setups on both macs and have probably done a software update or two recently I cant remember.  Also, if I installed some sort of problematic software on one, I probablly did it to the other.
Also around the last time i successfuly connected the macs I was trying some different software for networking.  I installed "team viewer".  I might have installed another similar app at the time although im not sure and if I did I probablly uninstalled it.  Im wondering if maybe I messed up some setting in the process of doing that?
If you have any ideas please help!
    Thanks!
