Network file system

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how can I create a program that will allow me to share file between multiple operating systems like windows and linux in a network.Basically I want to create a network file system browser between heterogeneous file systems.

http://jcifs.samba.org/ May help with Window's shares.
http://j-ftp.sourceforge.net/ This is a client that supports lots of protocols and is GPL'ed so you can look at the source if you need but be sure you understand the license first.
I'm not sure if you can get something that works with java.io.File but across the network. I'm pretty sure you need to use something provided by your OS for that. It'd be great if someone proved me wrong on this.

    Installation of the File Service and Service for NFS in Windows 2008 R2 server fails. Following are the steps used to perform the install.
    Open Server Manager from Start> All Programs> Administrative Tools> Server Manager.
    Click on the Roles node in the left pane, and then click the
    Add Roles link.
    On the Add Roles Wizard welcome page, click Next to continue.
    From the list of roles to install, select File Services, and click
    Next to continue.
    On the Introduction to File Services page, click Next to continue.
    On the Select Role Services page, keep the File Server box checked and select
    Services for Network File System. Click Next to continue.
    On the Confirmation page, review the settings and click the Install button.
    Click Close when the wizard completes.

    In Windows Event long I can see the following events logged:
    Event 3002, Port Map:
      Windows(R) failed a request to register RPC Port Mapper on TCP port 111.  RPC Port Mapper cannot start.
      Network File System (NFS) clients use RPC Port Mapper (also known as Portmap and Rpcbind) to discover NFS protocols on remote servers.  Without RPC Port Mapper, Server for NFS
    cannot start and NFS clients cannot access files on this server.
      Verify that no other software is registered on TCP port 111, then start Server for NFS manually (which will also start RPC Port Mapper).
    Event 7000, Service Control Manager:
    The Server for NFS Open RPC (ONCRPC) Portmapper service failed to start due to the following error:
    A device attached to the system is not functioning.
    Event 7001, Service Control Manager:
    The Server for NFS Driver service depends on the Server for NFS Open RPC (ONCRPC) Portmapper service which failed to start because of the following error:
    A device attached to the system is not functioning.
    Event 7001, Service Control Manager:
    The Server for NFS service depends on the Server for NFS Driver service which failed to start because of the following error:
    The dependency service or group failed to start.
    Based on a technet forum I have already checked and made sure there is no other service running on port 111 (command used is netstat -a -b -o).
    Dependent Service Status:
    During the installation process “Client for NFS” seems to have gone well and the service started successfully. But the “Server for NFS” failed, when checked for the status of the dependent process “portmap” service failed to start with the WIN32_EXIT_CODE
    “31 (0x1f)”. Please find below the query result.

    As the EXIT CODE is 31 ( A device attached to the system is not functioning), I have checked device manager and made sure there is no yellow warning shown against any hardware device. Further I am not sure how to proceed and debug this issue.
    Please let me know if you have any suggestion on how debug this issue further.

    My solution was to run netstat -ano to identify what process was running on port TCP/UDP :111, then with the command tasklist I got PID matching with the task name. Once identified I stopped the process, rebooted and installed
    the NFS service. On top of that, before installing NFS services I disabled firewall and antivirus. It worked fine for me. I hope this will be usefull for you. By the way, don't forget to enable all process back!
    Have a good one!

    I want to access and display the drives of a network file system in the JFileChooser dialog. For example by specifying a machine name, I want to access the drives(C, E, F....) of that machine. Can anyone please guide me on how to go forward with this.
    Thanks in advance

  • Choosing a highly-available, networked file system for VM images

    What's the consensus here on highly-available, networked file systems for VM disk images?
    HA-NFS seems difficult and overly-complicated.
    GlusterFS doesn't seem to be well-suited for this task.
    Ceph/RADOS seems popular but there isn't much information available.
    OCFS2 seem to be suitable but there also isn't much information available.
    Eric P.
    Truckee, CA

    Actually, I still would suggest taking a closer look at what I had mentioned in your other thread:
    [Use OCFS2 to Share Local Storage (DAS) Across OVM Compute Nodes|https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2438632&tstart=0]
    I still think that this would also solve thus thread. In the end, there is no how-to on how to build that up and you probably will need some help from some experts. I for myself, also didnÄt configure all of that on my own - i left ASM/Cluster part for some contractor to setup and focused on the iscsi-target/initiator setup along with the multipath setup on m VM servers.
    Maybe I will do a little write-up, once we get it all sorted out, since we do experience some strage behaviour of our storages boxes, while ASM hammers ob them quite hardly, but I suspect the raid controllers to blame and not the concept… ;)

  • Cloned volume gets stuck at boot "Waiting for Network File System"

    I've used "Carbon Copy Cloner" many times with success and no problems (v 2.3 , default settings, make destination bootable) as I migrated to larger drives or make backups in advance of a major OS upgrade.
    Last time I was successful, I was at OS 10.3.5. I use 3rd drive to boot my Mac, then clone the one non-boot drive to the other. I do the disk repairs & permission repairs as the normal course of this process, before & after. I am now at 10.3.9. I am do this clone in prep to go to 10.4 so I have a good back in the event of later problems.
    When I attempt to boot from the newly cloned partition, it goes fine on the boot process until it hangs at the "Waiting for Network File System" step and never gets past there. I've never had this happen before. I retired all the steps, even ran "Diskwarrier", but no change.
    I am not trying to run from a remote or network drive, just a 2nd drive in my
    G4 from which I have previously been able to boot (until this last clone attempt that is).
    I googled the symptoms ""Waiting for Network File System"", found it to be common, but no real answers. Is this one of those annoying UNIX things? Any ideas how to fix / turn-off whatever is hanging the boot up? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Kool,
    So there seems to be a "speed-bump" around 10.3.9. No wonder I have had the same results with a different tint. I went to Drive Genius to clone this one. Results with that were interesting.
    If I did a [Device] clone, it would take and show at start with 'option' key... and work just like my internal with 3 accounts on it... login and proceed like it was internal. If I did a [Volume] clone, it would not show up at start with the 'option' key... I'd have to boot it from System Preferences > Start-up Drive. Once booted, it had no login screen so all the files were accessible. I took the clone of this 3 account PB and tried it on an iBook. Had to boot from System Preferences too, also, all the account were accessible from that machine... implying that anyone who had that drive could get past/into my files that would be secure on my computer, but not on the clone. If I took the [Device] clone and booted from the ibook at start with the option key, it would not get past the login screen... altho the mouse worked and I could click on the name, that was as far as it got, Froze.
    So, I have figured, for safety, a [Device] clone is it, as long as the original computer lives. The safety features for login seem to be hardwired in the chip that the clone was made from (The iBook had 2 accounts but not my 3). If safety is not an issue, the [Volume] clone is fine... like moving to a newer OS on the same computer. It would seem from your experimentations that the situations with this 10.3.9 is just a hick-up and is solved in 10.4.3 with CCC v3...
    Thanks for your info... I am thinking of going to Tiger, but I am so fond of this Panther...

  • How to create a network file system on a small ethernet lan?

    Hi there,
    Have been wondering about creating a network file system on a small ethernet based lan. i don't know anything about how you do this but figure you need more than a normal external hardrive Many thanks for any responses

    Hi there,
    As far as I understand, you would like to be able to have a central location that all your computers can access and store files?
    If this is the case, and you want to use your lan router, there are many products that do such a thing. These devices are known as "Network Attached Storages" or NAS. They plug into your router like your computers do, and then allow your computers to access hard drives stored in the devices.
    The following link shows some NAS units on the tech shopping site Newegg.
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=124&name=Network-Storag e-NAS
    Hope that helps, and let me know if you have any more questions!

  • Client for NFS fails to restart - Event ID: 16387 - Windows(R) failed a request to initialize the Network File System (NFS) redirector

    I have seen this issue out there in a few threads but a definitive solution has not been posted by Microsoft that I can find. So here is the simple answer. The long answer why this doesn't work on a default install of MSNFS is going to have to come from
    Microsoft and should be in the form of a hotfix.
    Problem Description
    On boot, Client for NFS starts and remains running. If an attempt is made to restart the service from the MMC or nfsadmin, an error occurs and nfsclnt fails to start.
    Event log error:

      Client for NFS cannot start.
      Windows may be low on system resources.  Try increasing available system resources by closing programs, then start Client for NFS manually.
    ==================================================================
    PROBLEM CAUSED BY: When shutting down Client for NFS using the Services GUI, Client for NFS Redirector is not shut down
    SOLUTION: Stop NFS Redirector - 'sc stop NfsRdr' - Then start NFS client service - 'nfsadmin start client'
    Use 'nfsadmin client stop' to correctly shut down both the Client for NFS service and the Client for NFS Redirector.
    'Network File System (NFS) redirector' is actually "Client for NFS Redirector" and not listed as a service even though "Client for NFS" requires it.
    Using 'sc', details on the hidden NfsRdr system component can be queried and then used to stop the redirector so that nfsclnt.exe can reload it on start up using the Services GUI.

  • EMac won't start up, only gets to "Starting Network File System"

    Would appreciate any help. I'm a novice. Have a 4-year-old eMac that offered updates for Quicktime and iTunes. I let it go ahead. Got to a point where it said to close iTunes before continuing update. I did close iTunes and OK'd to continue update. Right away the monitor became shaded it and said to restart. Now when I turn it off and try to restart, it makes the start-up sound and the circle clicks around and then suddenly stops. Then the blue line fills in until it gets to "Starting Network File System" and then becomes shaded again saying to restart. I did some research and tried holding down the option key while powering on. Now I have a Macintosh HD icon with a blue X, as well as a 3/4 circle w/arrow and a straight line arrow. Any help would be very, very much appreciated. Thank you. kcorbett

    bjadk,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    If Apple Hardware test is reporting RAM memory errors, no amount of reinstalling, or Disk Warrior, or anything else, will help. The install and repair attempts, sabotaged by bad RAM, would actually corrupt the hard drive worse on each attempt.
    Do you recall how much RAM was in the eMac? Did you get RAM size reports from AHT? Check the RAM slots on the eMac by opening the access door on the bottom (see eMac - Do-It-Yourself). If there are two DIMMS, pull the one in DIMM slot 1 (that'll be the one on the top if I recall correctly). Removing the bad RAM may leave you with too little RAM to actually run the eMac; you can check your eMac model and use that info to order good RAM from Crucial.
    Yet another potential problem comes to mind. If the Mac is three years old and hasn't been used much, has it been largely turned off and either unplugged, or plugged into a surge protector that was itself turned off? It the Mac hasn't been able to draw a trickle current while nominally turned off, the PRAM battery could be drained, which can also interfere with starting up and using the computer. You can use a voltmeter to check the battery while in the battery holder and replace it if it's more than 0.1v below the nominal 3.6v value.
    When AHT gives the RAM a clean bill, use your OS X Install disc to boot the computer and again try Repair Disk and/or use single-use rmode to run fsck (per Using Disk Utility and fsck). IF Repair Disk/fsck report making repairs, repeat that step until it either reports no problems found or unable to repair, since one directory error can mask other errors. As already mentioned, DiskWarrior has an excellent track record of making repairs where Disk Utility could not.
    If Disk Utility or Disk Warrior repair the disk, you can proceed to an Archive and Install (you'll need 5 GB or so free space on the hard drive to do an A&I; if space is tight, use the Installer options to select language support for only the language(s) you actually use).
    If no utility can repair the disk, an Erase & Install with the one-pass write zeros option selected could recover use of the drive, by forcing the drive to update it's record of bad disk sectors to avoid. This would lose any data and programs for which you don't have a backup or install discs, through.

  • Change repository from Network File System to SharePoint

    I have a brand new instance of Unifier 10.1, and have configured it to use the "Network File System" as the repository. I have 3 documents added to the library. I would now like to change the repository to point to an instance of SharePoint. The instructions in the Connecting the Content Repository to Primavera Unifier document were followed, using the SharePoint Connector. It was not setup up by me, but I am fairly confident it is setup correctly.
    When I attempt to upload a document, a very generic error message is displayed, suggesting I try logging out and back in again. Not very useful. In the logs however, I am getting the following error:
    java.lang.Exception: Base path is not set
      at com.skire.dm.utils.FileUtils.createTodaysFilePath(FileUtils.java:869)
      at com.skire.dm.utils.FileUtils.getTodaysFilePath(FileUtils.java:858)
      at com.skire.common.taskdefs.DiskFile.doUpload(DiskFile.java:411)
      at com.skire.common.taskdefs.DiskFile.execute(DiskFile.java:168)
      at com.skire.webant.WebTask.perform(WebTask.java:93)
    Does anyone know what else may need to be configured to switch to using SharePoint as my repository type?
    Has anyone attempted to switch repository types after the initial configuration and addition of documents?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can a BIP report be deliveredto local or network file system

    We have OBIEE 10.1.3.4 installed on Linux Redhat 5.2. We have some reports on BI Publisher and want to save the report to a local or network file system. Not sure if it is possible as save to file system is no list as an option in BIP Admin Delivery list.
    Please help!

    Thank you for help. But is it a way to save the whole report to one file instead split it according to a key.
    One way I can think of is to create a dummy key of a single value. Is there a BIP built-in way doing this?

  • How to configure SunCluster 3.1 8/05 with Network File System

    Hi Gurus,
    does anyone has experience to configure SC3.1 8/05 using nas as cluster filesystems?
    I've found this document in docs.sun.com:

    This document explain how to use scnas and scnasdir commands, how to use netapp as quorum device.
    It seems incomplete, after I configure netapp in cluster what I need to do to register netapp filesystems in the resource group?

  • Networked File System

    I'm working on a proposed lab installation of linux, and I've been asked to make a working prototype.
    When I say "lab" I mean a high school computer science lab, which is currently running Windows XP and a Windows 2003 Server in a domain/Active Directory setup.
    I need to get centralized logon, centralized user information, networked home directories, and some sort of client control system (think "remote control pacman").
    So far I have a working Kerberos (Heimdal) and OpenLDAP setup that lets a user log in and get a shell, I'm working on home directories.
    What would be the best way to go about this? This is a computer science lab - there are some (unsophisticated) hacker types in there that do use linux and would try to break security. For this reason, I believe NFS is not a valid solution, but I may be completely incorrect.
    I've read up on AFS, and it looks like it would do what I want in an efficient manner, but I've read some negative comments on here about it.
    Can anyone recommend a network home directory solution?

    See, the trick is that this solution will start out with one server and ~25 clients, but it could very well expand to multiple servers and 150-200 clients, so I'm looking for something more scalable than NFS, which works perfectly well, but only with one server.
    I'm hoping for a system that's very scalable, and while AFS (Andrew File System) seems to be what I want, it seems to be a beast to configure and very heavy (~10 different servers to manage it? hrmmm?). I'm really wondering if I should try to get AFS working or explore an alternative.

  • Problem of Network File System repository

    Hi all:
    I want to set up a File system repository on a remote server.
    The steps are here:
    1.Define a Network Path.
    2.Set up a File system repository.
    Things done when the file system and the portal server are in the same zone of address,like  10.XXX.5.XX and 10.XXX.5.XXX,  but when reference to another file system, which IP is 10.XXX.10.XX, the repository can never start up!
    The message in Component Monitoring is "The localroot does not exist:
    10.XXX.10.XX"
    How can I solve this problem?

    Hi Rani,
    1.I think I have done all the steps setting up a File system repository. And when the server and File system are in the same segment of IP address, the repository works.
    Security Manager:AclSecurityManager
    ACL Manager Cache: not set
    Windows Landscape System: not set
    2.when use servername as the path, the message on monitoring is still on IP address.
    3.I can't see the folder
    4. I can open the path from the server on exploer.

  • Access denied when jsp writes to a`network  file system

    Hi
    Can anyone help. Im having big problems with my web application which was working fine when it was hosted on a tomcat windows NT machine. The application was recently upgraded to a Windows 2000 machine. My jsp page which has to write to a network drive can no longer do so. I keep getting ACCESS DENIED.
    My jsp page is as follows:
    <html>
    <head><title>test</title></head>
    <body>This is a test page
    <jsp:useBean
    id="sendSMS"
    scope="page"
    class="podsystembeans.phonetrackbeans.FileWrite"
    />
    <%
    String sms = sendSMS.testIO();
    out.println(sms);
    %>
    </body></html>My javabean is as follows:
    package podsystembeans.phonetrackbeans;
    import java.io.*;
    public class FileWrite
         public String testIO(){
              try{
                       // Create file
                  FileWriter fstream = new FileWriter("R:/outt.txt");
                 BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(fstream);
                  out.write("Hello Java");
                  //Close the output stream
                  out.close();
              }catch (Exception e){//Catch exception if any
                System.out.println("Error testing : " + e.getMessage());
         return "success";
    }OBSERVATION
    If i try and write the file to the local machine for example C and D drives then it works. If i try and write the file to R drive which is another windows 2000 machine then i get access denied. Also if i try and write to a L drive which is a windows NT machine then i get the same message too.
    If i run the above bean as a stand alone application with
    public static void main
    and I run it then it will work and write to any drive on the network.
    Everytime my application fails to write to the network drive my windows machine shows the mapped drives with a red cross on it. I have applied the latest service packs and i have followed microsofts suggestions editing the registry autodisconnect keys. But i am still having problems and it is my java app which is causing it.
    SETTINGS
    Windows 2000 service pack 4
    Tomcat 5 installed on d drive
    java 5 installed on c drive
    mapped network drives to other machines , the network is a 192.168.1.x network
    regards
    antek

    Hi
    Thanks for the pointer, I am trying to follow the suggestion and I want to know is the server.policy same as catalina.policy in tomcat under the conf folder. Also in this policy do i write the ip addresses of the machines i want to access?
    Thanks

  • Open library from AFP share - Unsupported File System - Aperture 3

    Testing Aperture 3 - Exported a project as a library to an AFP (10.5) share.
    I then tried to reopen the library and got an error Unsupported File System ?
    Is there possibly a network file system that will support Aperture 3 libraries ?

    Temp solution in this thread - tested it and it works
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2330306&tstart=30
    I have found an workaround for this issue. Do the following:
    First, upgrade the library to version 3 using Aperture on the computer where you have the disk containing the library; if this is not possible, copy the library on the computer running Aperture and do the update there, then copy the updated library back;
    Then navigate to the network disk where you have the updated library and double-click it: a dialog box will come out saying something like <There was an error opening the database for the library "/Volumes/Media/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported> Click OK.
    A new dialog box will appear asking "Which library do you want Aperture to use?" and a list with all libraries; among them, the library situated on the network disk. Select it and click "Choose".
    Voila, after a delay depending on the speed of your network and remote disk, the library will open.
    Note that this "show" will repeat each time you will start-up Aperture. Anyway, it's better than nothing. I hope that Apple will correct this soon.
    And yes, I am using the Trial Version, I will buy a license only after Apple solves this issue! "
