Network Mac & PC with External Hardrive??

I'm getting confused, so thought I would just go ahead and ask.
This is what I want to do. Can I?
Create a wireless network (maybe the new extreme)- connect a printer and External Hardrive. I would have a Mac & a PC running off it.
My question is about the Ex hardrive. I realize it would need to be Fat32 to run both, but I want a large drive. I want to 1. backup my mac 2. Save large files like movies 3. have an area to share with the PC.
I think Kappy mentioned that if I format it Fat32, the whole thing needs to be??? Is that the case? Any suggestions on what would be best for what I'm thinking? Am I thinking wrong?
I appreciate your comments!
Bill

Aim to meet the minimum system requirments CS4 needs in order to function properly.  Older machines are less likely to be capable.

  • Mac air with external hard drive - not being found on Finder, Time Machine, Migration Assistant

I have been using an external drive (Imation Apollo) to access only, old files from previous computer (PC) on a new Mac Air.  I had not transferred them across to new computer (didn't want to do that)  just accessing them from the HD.  It had been working fine until recently.  Each time the external drive had been connected Time Machine would come up and ask if i wanted to use this drive for back ups, and I always chose 'Decide later'.  So, as yetI hadn't as yet configured Time Machine to do back ups.
Recently I noticed that the extrnal HD was no longer showing up on Finder.  Slight panic as i have 5 or 6 yrs of work saved on that HD
Further investigations - it's also not showing up either on on Disk Utility, or on Migration Assistant.
    I've done the following:
Tried HD in each of different USB ports  - made no difference, HD still not showing up
Tested different Hubs in each port with HD attached - no difference HD not showing up
Tried USB flash drives in the USB ports - These are working fine and show up on finder
Tried the HD on other comptuters (a PC though, don't have access to another mac to do this test)- working fine, the HD is showing up and is accessable
Interrogated the Console logs to try to see if the act of attaching the HD creates a log entry - couldn't find anything
Rebooted computer via shut down, power disconnect - no difference
Reset PRAM - no difference still not showing up
Reset SMC - no differnce still not showing up
So I think I have established that all the USB ports are functioning correctly and able to access other external drive devices, using hubs with external powersource is not the issue, identified that the external hard drive is working OK, and it appears that the Mac itself is functioning normally.
What would be the reason the Mac now does not allow this specific external HD to be identified and accessed.  The only possible things I can think of are
if I had in fact pressed 'Do not use' when Time Machine asked 'do you want to use this drive for back ups'.  Would that mean that the Mac now totally rejects this HD from being a source of accessible files - I hope not!
I also think that my husband may have disconnected the hard drive from my computer to access some stuff and he just yanked it out rather than use the safe eject method.  Could this create an issue?  The Hard drive works fine on his PC.
Why is my Mac Air now rejecting this HD and what can I do to access my historical files now.
Any assistance anyone can provide would be very greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Anna

I can't answer why it isn't accessing it, but I have a slightly related issue w my back up drive starting to get noisy.
Realizing that redundancy is safety for critical data.  I talked to my brother about my situation the other day & he said he has 3 small Western Digital portable HDs that he rotates for backup. He even keeps 1 in the safe deposit box.
I have read for some time that we should have multiple back ups & also have our critical stuff backed up off site. Amazon HD reviews had a woman telling about how she was very backed up on multiple computers & hard drives, but they were robbed or burgeled & all of them were stolen including her thesis that was on the computers.
Hard drives aren't that expensive. I just bought a new Western Digital 1 TB drive for $89.99. I plan to use it to back up the Seagate that is getting noisy & then maybe alternate them.
Also, when I came back to Mac, I moved practially all of my documents to Mac. I think I just dragged & dropped or something. Photos, Office, & pdfs do fine that way. & then you could back them up to a couple of different external drives & remove from your MacBookAir.
Unfortunately I think most of us do not back up until crisis & then it may be too late.
Also use Time Machine. For the 1st time in my computer life, my computer is well backed up--although now realizing the need for redundancy so will start backing up to at least 2 different HDs alternatly.
So, not sure why it isn't working & hopefully you have come up w a solution by now.
I think what I would do in a situation like this, since you can access it on the Windows machine would be to transfer the data to the Windows machine & then transfer it back to a different back up.
I'm looking into backing up what I still have in Windows using a thumb flash drive. I think it should all fit ok now that they have the larger drives & I don't have very much left in Windows format.

  • File Transfers with External Hardrive

My computer's hardrive was filling up because it is the family computer, so i purchased a 320 gig external hardrive for my music. in the past when i have moved my music to different files i get a grey exclamation point in front of the song and i need to locate the song in order for this to work. i have many songs and would like to transfer them to the external hardrive without having to individually locate them all. is this possible?

Sure, first thing to do is make sure your exHD has a letter pretty far down in the alphabet so Windows won't do any funny stuff and change that drive letter on you when you plug in other USB devices.
(if the drive letter changes you'll get the ! all over again)
Then, follow the directions from this article to consolidate your library.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
I would hold off on steps 11 & 12 until you're sure it worked properly.

  • My macbook pro is having problems with external hardrive installation

I bought a seagate 2TB external hard drive and every time that I get to the part of the installation where it asks me to "activate" this product my computer tells me "not responding".  I called seagate tech support and they told me that I have something wrong with my operating system.  My macbook pro is still OS 10.4 version, so it's time to upgrade, which is what I'm trying to do by backing up all of my files before I install snow leapard, but I'm getting stuck at this seemingly simple step of activation.  Is there any ideas of where to go from here?

What sort of activation is this?  Sounds like something you really don't need unless the drive is somehow locked.
I think I would do the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.  If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • 1.42 Mac Mini with External Boot (HFS) will not Load Leopard

The Mac Mini will restart to start the loading from the DVD. The drive will spin up and will act like it is going to work then I get the wonderful "grey screen of death" telling me to power up the mac again. I have tried shutting down all other external drives but the one I need to install on. Even though I know the dive in the mini is bad I tried to run with only it and boot from the DVD and that didnt work either. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am not touching the MacBook till I see that this will work. Very dissappointed so far. Have never had an issue with upgrades from Apple before.
I have check my software update.. completely up to date. I have scoured the downloads for any firmware updates and the few I have found say I am not eligible for that update.

I disconnexted all drives and externals. Then tried again. That seemed to help. Have new issues which I am getting ready to post.

  • Networking Mac Pro with Windows 7

I have been trying to network my PC that has windows 7 home edition on it with my Mac Pro snow leopard. The mac can not see the windows machine, and the windows machine can not access the mac. They are on the same network (apple extreme wireless router.) Before I got the windows machine, I had a dell with windows XP on it and it worked fine, but as soon as I got this new windows machine with windows 7, it does not work. Has anyone run into this problem? anyone know of a fix?
    Thanks

    well...i have the same problem.
since my mac (running snow leopard) isn't able to see the windows 7 pc neither, i'm only able to connect to my pc thru "go" -> "connect to network" and then entering smb://"ip-adress" . not very elegant but at least it works....
    any better solutions??
    thanks!!

  • Networking Mac's with Time Capsule

I'm having trouble networking my two MacBook's using my Time Capsule as the server. Any tips?

I'm having a similar problem. My network worked fine for a long time. Recently, I went on to a couple of machines and deleted a number of files to try to regain hard disk space. I didn't think I deleted anything important, but afterward, machines were not recognizing each other. A couple of the files I deleted were Hewlett-Packard files from the Startup folder. I realized the need for tham afterward, and reinstalled the printer drivers.
However, while the printer is now working, it is only working with the machine attached to it. The other machines which accessed it over the network can not do so anymore.
The weirdest is, after resetting everything, I was able to log in to my Mac Book from my Mac Mini, but I couldn't do the reverse. When trying to connect to the Mini from the Book, it timed out. I tried directly using Go to...Server with the Mini's IP address, no luck. I made sure "File Sharing" was turned on both machines.
At one point I was in the sharing preferences and noted, on the Mini, that a "Permitted Users" list existed. One had a dim network icon with my name "Daniel", which is similar, but not same as, name of the Mac Book ("Daniel's Mac Book (2)"). As a test, I deleted it, and, sure enough, I could no longer log into the Book from the Mini. I hit the + sign to re-add "Daniel", but wasn't able to because the Mini would not recognize the Book anymore.
All the computers recognize the Time Capsule just fine, they all access the internet just fine, they all have File Sharing turned on, they just won't recognize each other.
This is an important problem because we have only one printer, hooked up directly to the Mini. All our printing is done over the network through the Mini.
I've done hard reset (unplugged Time Capsule), soft reset (through Airport Utility) and reset manually all Time Capsule settings - still no recognition computer to computer.
    Any ideas for next steps?

  • Permissions problem with External Hardrive

Sorry to drag up this old topic, but I have a situation on a friends iMac that I cannot correct following the steps here.
It has an external drive connected that is data only, no MacOS. I have followed step #3 by typing the following chmod 775/Volumes/G-DRIVE/
I get a reply in the Terminal Window that shows:
    usage: chmod [-fv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] [-a | +a | =a [# [ n]]] mode |entry file... static-72-67-xxx-xxx :~accountname
(the x's represent the static I.P.)
but I still cannot see the drive.
Does this have to be done from the account that caused this issue, or can it be done with any account that has Admin privileges?
Sorry about dual posting. I picked up a thread that shows as solved earlier and can't delete my post there.

Thank you, it worked. I missed the space after 775.
He was trying to keep people from having access to the external drive when signed into that account.

  • 3 x Mac minis, with external superdrives, incapable of importing a CD cleanly. ***?

I have three mac minis, each without internal drive, rack mounted in sonnet rack mac enclosures. Each one is directly connected to macbook air superdrives - as sold to me by the mac dealer.
None of these units is capable of importing a CD of any kind cleanly. They all skip the first couple of seconds of a track or play it a few times. I have tested all systems by swapping out the superdrives but always the same thing. Currently the only way to import music on these machines is to import the CD on the desktop mac then put the tracks on to a USB drive.
    What do I do?
The minis are only about 4 months old, as are the superdrives. They all have Lion installed.
It's important that they have CD drives as they are primarily used for audio playback.

    Hi Woodmeister
They are 2.3GHz Intel i5 machines with no internal CD drive. They have 2Gb ram and are running OSX 10.7.2.
The Macbook air superdrive is plugged in directly to to the back of the mini.
I thought it might just be a bad import but for each disk the errors seem to be fairly consistent across all the computers even using different disks, different drives and different minis. I haven't yet got a successful full import of a CD. It usually messes up the beginning of the first track (by going backwards and forwards over the same bit over and over), and then again about 5-6 tracks in of a normal CD (same thing). It doesn't seem to make a difference whether it's a bought or burned CD.
I have used iTunes, QLab, and Finder to import the CDs and it's always the same.
    Thanks

  • When using time machine with external hardrive to backup, some music items from iTunes and some photos from iPhoto do not transfer to backup hardrive.  What am I ding wrong?  Using latest version of mountain lion.

When I use time machine with my external harddrive to back up computer, some music from iTunes library, and some photos from iPhoto library are missing when I check backup disk.  I am using latest version of mountain lion.  Am I doing something wrong?

First, Time Machine doesn't completely back up the iPhoto library while iPhoto is running. Make sure you quit iPhoto after making any changes to allow a backup to take place.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including both overt and hidden exclusions. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • Is it possible to network Mac laptop with PC's. have three pc's wired to my network and can not see them on my laptop.

Looking to see if it is possible to view my PC's on my MacPro. Have 3 PC's networked and was hoping to link laptop also, but can not seem to do it. Have WIFI and that is working. I am a novice at this. Please help.

    Hi Larry,
    It should be easy.
I assume Sharing is setup on the PCs?
    Find IP on computers...
    http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/communication/ethernet/office/winxp/2882/
On the Mac In finder, select Go menu>Connect to Servers, use the Browse button there, or..., type in the IP of a computer, like...
    smb://10.0.1.5
    smb://192.168.1.3

  • Problem importing from 64 GB Lexar USB card in LR4 on Mac Mini with external hard drive.

Initiated import after deselecting some images. Import was super quick and I was suspicious as the stick had over 40GB of images. Progress bar indicated completed import. Later when I went to process images the Library module indicated that the files were "missing". Eventually I noted that the images were still listed as on the USB stick and had not been imported - though it seems they were imported into the catalogue and listed there with the thumbnails. Luckily I had not erased the USB stick. How do I avoid a repetition of this scenario? What should I do to complete the import? Should I delete the original and delete from Catalogue and start over again? This happened once before and I lost some good images when the progress bar erroneously (?) indicated completed import. Obviously I did something wrong.

As Rikk Flohr has already suggested, you must have selected <Add> (in the top center of the Import Dialog - although in Lr 4.3 this option is not any more available when importing from card).
<Add> is for importing images that are already on the hard drive and you do not want to change their location.
<Move> is for importing images that are already on the hard drive and you do want to change their location.
<Copy> is for importing images from camera / memory card.
You saw the progress bar when you imported. But that does not necessarily mean that your images have been copied to the hard drive.
Importing from memory card / stick / camera involves a two-step process:
    a) the images are copied to the hard drive;
    b) the images are referenced in the catalog.
In your case it seems that only (b) happened. Thus you get the message  that the images (i.e. the image files) are missing once you removed the memory stick.
To correct this: Move the images via your OS (Mac Finder / Win Explorer) to a location where you want your images to be.
Then in Lr re-link the catalog reference with the images files. You  do this by right-clicking the folder in question in the folders panel (it should have a question mark in front of the folder name) and selecting <Update folder location> or <Find missing folder>. Navigate to the location of the folder and select it.
For more on re-linking missing images / folders see here:
    http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/creative-suite-podcast-photographers/lightroom-dude-where-are-my -photos/
Important:Do not re-import the photos. Re-importing photos that are already in the Lr catalog creates problems.

  • USB loses connection with external hardrive

    Hi,
i still having problems  with losing connection to my external disk.
i have a new HP pavilion touchsmart 15 notebook PC 15-n058ed with some problems on the USB 3.0 in combibation with the Toshiba external harddisk.
And windows 8.1 With KB2919355 installed (and all the other updates installed)
It is an 64 b system.
Sometimes the connection is lost. So backup refuses to go on. And gives the message to reformat the disk to use it again.
I have tryed to disable the USB selective suspend setting. But that did not work either.
    i tryed : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/usbcoreblog/archive/2013/11/01/help-after-installing-windows-8-1-my-usb-driv...
I cannot use it because of the different screenddumps. They are completly different from my screens.
    So i am lost.
    Regards Jan.

    Hi,
Thank you for answering those questions.
As you're answer was " no" to the questions on testing the hardware in any way. Then we'll go another avenue.
Based on the fact that the article you've found on the issue has failed this would indicate your issue is not the exact same.
Next steps, make sure all Windows updates are complete and that all drivers are up to date.
Do a Clean boot on the notebook .
    Update the BIOS.
If the issue remains after that, do a system recovery:
Overview of Recovering the OS or Reinstalling the Operating System
If that all fails, then you probably have a hardware problem. I wouldn't know if it was the ports or the drive. The questions asked previously would help identify which.
You may also want to contact the hard drives manufacture for any suggestions on the issue.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Mac Pro with External Camera use FaceTime for Mac?

Any ideas what cameras will work with a Mac Pro that does not have Isight camera? Can I use a Camcorder or still camera that takes videos?

I use a LogiTech C910 1080 HD Video webcam on my MacPro 8 core and it works great. BestBuy sells them for $79.95 and on sale this week for $10.00 off.. great camera for the price. Also works with iMovie for short clips.
I just downloaded FaceTime for the Mac and installed it.. called myself using my iPhone 4 and works like a champ.
It has built in stereo microphone but I use a separate Plantronics USB headset for better sound and listening when talking with someone on Skype or any other video chat.
CAUTION..If you do test it using your iPhone (in the same room) watch out for the FEEDBACK through the speakers.. be ready to hit the MUTE button on your iPhone or you will get reverb loud and real fast. And it even mutes iTunes when a call comes in.. and when you hang up iTunes comes back up..pretty cool.
The Logitech C910 doesn't say it will work on a Mac (on the box, it only says Windows) but it does and works just fine. Plus there are other drivers on their web site for the Mac and other cameras.
    Hope this helps..
