Network management methods

I have a problem with choosing the most suitable network management method in Arch for my laptop. The question itself may seem silly, but after reading some articles in ArchWiki I got a bit confused.
What I need is to be able to connect and disconnect reasonably quickly to different wireless networks (manually) and to be able to connect automatically to my home network during startup. KDE applets are welcome, but not necessary. As far as ethernet network card is concerned, I'd like it to connect automatically when the cable is plugged in.
Which method would be the most efficient solution (NetworkManager, netcfg, other)?

There are three main choices: NetworkManager, wicd and netcfg. All of them should work for you, but NM and wicd seem a better fit for KDE. Of those two, NM seems to have more features (e.g. connecting with usb modems/phones), but it not always wanted to play nice with my hardware, while wicd always did. With NM, you can use gnomish nm-applet (network-manager-applet package), which is most featureful and stable, or you can try using knetworkmanager or NM applet from the kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement package - those seem to be somewhat buggy. With wicd, you can use wicd-client-kde from AUR.

  • Network Manager Can't Connect Wirelessly

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to migrate from Connman to Network Manager for my network needs (as well as from e17 to xmonad) and I'm seeing some strange behavior. I can get the network manager applet running, but it won't connect to any wireless networks. I see a bunch of networks floating around in the connections list, but if I click on one, nothing happens. Furthermore, if I try to connect by command line, I get the following weirdness
    Input:
    nmcli con up uuid f767eb89-ccbc-4dbe-bf12-af216ab8f9ff ap A0:21:B7:72:A3:CE
    (the uuid is for my wlan0 interface and the ap is the BSSID of my network).
    Output:
    Active connection state: activating
    Active connection path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/0
    ** (process:2012): WARNING **: _nm_object_get_property: Error getting 'State' for /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/0: (19) Method "Get" with signature "ss" on interface "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties" doesn't exist
    state: unknown
    Error: Connection activation failed.
    I'm fairly sure that I have my policy kit working correctly. I have dbus and network manager as daemons and I logged in to an xmonad session using GDM, which should do my policy management for me, right?
    I think its the wrong error message for a policy kit error anyways.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    I switched to wicd, so this isn't an issue anymore, I guess... still not sure what was going wrong, though.

  • [SOLVED] Network Manager Applet

    One of the things I got used to from Ubuntu is the network manager applet, which allows managing connections with ease. As instructed in the Wiki, I tried installing it with the following commands:
    pacman -S networkmanager
    pacman -S network-manager-applet
    And then launched it by typing
    nm-applet
    But this comes up in the terminal:

    In the notification area the icon looked like it was going to show up, but it's removed immediately.
    I'm not even sure if I can connect to a wireless connection without this, can I? I wouldn't mind using a different method for connecting to my wireless connection, just as long as it works and it automatically connects when I login. So if anyone has got a better idea, please share it with me. In the mean time, what would I need to do to fix this and have the network manager applet working?

    It worked excellently! I also added networkmanager to the daemons array and it loads on boot now, which is great.
    No problem. Glad to help. As karol said the wiki has many tips and tricks for almost anything that you need to get your system up and running. Make sure to read through the rest of the networkmanager one in regards to  gnome-keyring, groups, etc.. Take care and welcome to Arch Linux Forums.

  • Wireless Network Management with Multiple SSIDs in one Wireless Profile

    Could anybody explain me about how Multiple SSIDs in one Wireless Network Name (Network Profile) ? Configuration will be pushed to Windows 7 Pro from Wins Server 2008 R2.
    Objective: Multiple office locations will have different SSIDs and when the laptop user travels one location to another, he/she could connect to wireless networks at any offices without any configuration change but utilizing "Automatically use my Windows
    logon name and password (and domain if any.)" setting in EAP MSCHAPv2 properties.
    Network Name: Enterprise
    SSIDS: SFO-WIFI, LAX-WIFI,CHI-WIFI,NYC-WIFI,
    Network Type:Access Point
    Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption Type: AES
    Network Authentication Method: Microsoft:Protect EAP(PEAP)
    My question is: (1) Will Windows try all the SSIDs in order to get connected to the Wireless Network at the office? (Let's say, user is in NYC, but will Windows try to find SFO-WIFI SSID first, wait until time out, retry?, and moves on to LAS-WIFI SSID,
    wait until time out, retry?, and moves on to CHI-WIFI and finally tries NYC-WIFI SSID and found the SSID in the beacon from Access Point and authenticates through RADIUS?
    (2) If the answer is YES, what is the waiting time/timeout setting for one SSID before moves on to another?
    (3) If the answer is NO, what is the process to get user connected to NYC-WIFI SSID when he/she is in NYC office within the range of that SSID?

    Hello Ninjago_2224,
    About the multiple office location have different SSIDs, does the location A has the signal used in
    location D?
    Please go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center
    , and then click Manage wireless networks.
    The windows will try to connect to these networks in the order listed.
    Please check if the four SSID pushed by Windows Server 2008 is listed as mentioned above.
    If the location A have the location D SSID and the location D SSID has higher priority, the Windows will connect to
    location D SSID.
    So about the question 1, the Windows will try the SSID in order.
    About the question 2, I can’t find the accurate time that test one SSID and move to another. But based on my test, it is very fast.
    For more information, please take a look at the following article.

    I see that systemctl doesn't see wicd yet, so I'll reboot in a second and try to start wicd again.

  • Cisco application networking manager license file - unable copy to server

    Hi all
    We tried all the options like ftp, tftp, scp, etc., to copy cisco application networking manager license file from my pc to its server which has CISCO ADE OS .But unable to copy .can anybody know correct method to copy ??
    Thanks & Regards
    Sanjeevi

    Adrian,
    In order to install the license you must have a license file on the ANM server and install it through the command line:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/application_networking_manager/4.1/installation/guide/IG_config.html#wpmkr1120937
    No other way to do it.
    License file can either be copied to the ANM file system, or you can create a new empty license file on it and copy paste the license file content.
    If you have no access to the ANM server through CLI, then a workaround might be:
         - install a new VMWARE machine where you have CLI access.
         - install ANM on it
         - copy license (other you copy the file through any means or you create a file and edit by copy pasting the license file content)
         - install license with the command  /opt/CSCOanm/bin/anm-license install /path/ANMxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.lic as described in the link above
         - save the VMware image
         - deploy the same VMWare image to the ESX where it has to be installed and where you have no access to CLI neither you can copy a file.
    Hope this helps,
    Domenico.

  • Network Manager Dispatcher with NFS/Autofs

    I'm looking to see what is the most recommended method of starting automounted nfs shares after network manager has brought up a wireless connection.
    Currently, I'm using the network manager dispatcher and I have dispatch files for:
    netfs
    autofs
    In rc.conf DAEMONS I still have
    rpcbind
    nfs-common
    Should I make dispatcher files for rpcbind and nfs-common as well? What do people around here consider the proper way to do this?

    Thanks for tip about journalctl!! Made a big difference.
    Here is what the script is telling me:
    Apr 03 11:45:08 orphan nm-dispatcher.action[553]: Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/50-mount_sshfs_share_gohilton_2223.sh' took too long; killing it.
    I'm guessing the ssh part where it attempts to connect to the remote server and mount the remote ssh is taking to long however even using journalctl in verbose mode really doesn't confirm this assumption.
    I'm wondering if this would best be done with systemd unit files?

  • Network manager vpn kde

    I'm having trouble connecting to a VPN through network manager on KDE. I think my biggest problem is understanding the structure of Network Manager, can anyone help me out.
    I have Network Manager running and configuring my wireless client perfectly through networkmanager-plasmoid.
    I would like to setup a vpn through pptp.  I tried to set this up through the plasmiod but it doesn't really do anything.  I understand this is still alpha, so it may just not work.
    I have installed networkmanager-pptp through aur.  But what is this doing? It seems like in gnome this has a gui. Is this purely a gui or a backend as well.
    Should I be manually setting up a vpn with pptp? It seems like the point of networkmanager is to configure this for me (or is network manager only going to start this and tell me when it is running).
    Thanks for any help.

    Currently, the plasmoid is in heavy development, so I recommend to remove it with pacman -R, and use the gnome networkmanager frontend. Use the connection editor, enter the gateway, username, password, domain, use the special button to choose the authentication method (pap, chap, mschap, mschapv2, choose only one, if the login fails, try another). On the ipv4 tab, use the routing button, and enter the routing info, e.g. 192.168.1.0, 255.255.255.0, and disable automatic routing.
    Hope that helps.

  • Network Manager - wired connection

    Hello.
    At my dormitory I'm trying to automatize connecting to a local network. So far I've been
    connecting to the network using this sequnce of commands:
    $ sudo ifconfig eth0 up
    $ sudo wpa_supplicant -Dwired -ieth0 -c /etc/kolejnet.conf -B
    $ sudo dhcpcd eth0 up
    It's kind of anoying.
    I'm trying to get my Network Manager working but it seems that somewhere is a problem
    but I don't know what it is. This is how is my file "/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
    /kolejnet" supposed to look like:
    [802-3-ethernet]
    duplex=full
    mac-address=f0:de:f1:8:1a:a1
    [connection]
    id=kolejnet
    uuid=3146f80e-9643-4de3-a037-6ef7e8adc888
    type=802-3-ethernet
    timestamp=1317798337
    [ipv6]
    method=auto
    [802-1x]
    eap=ttls;
    identity="my username"
    anonymous-identity=pizet
    ca-cert=/etc/ssl/certs/vpn-sisal.pem
    phase2-auth=pap
    password="my password"
    [ipv4]
    method=auto
    If everything is in here correct, what could the problem be?

    The title says "have internet until ...", so apparently you have something else running to handle the connection. You can hope that NetworkManager will somehow find and kill this other network management tool, but a saner approach is to stop/kill it yourself before you start NM.
    Note that I don't know much about steam, so there might be a better solution that allows you to continue to use your current tool (instead of NM).
    And you should turn to the journal if you want to see log messages for NM.

    Can anyone offer some suggestion on how to get network manager going, I would like to use it. In the past
    I have used Wicd, but it has some limitations.
    Cheers,

    Ok, I found the issue. I was missing the firmware for the card. I downloaded firmware from the intel site as per the wiki on wireless and
    my interface comes up (shown with ifconfig) and I can see all the networks.
    However, I cannot seem to connect to my network with WPA. When I go to connect I get network manager thinking the access point is WEP and asking for pass phrase.
    If I select WPA(personal) and fill in a password, nothing happens .... just says unavailable.
    Can anyone give some idea's here. I have not used network manager before for WPA.

    I use WPA2 with network manager without a problem.  It should "just work", im not sure why you have issues, can you switch your router to a different security protocol to test?

  • How do I install individual driver of Killer LAN without its Network Management application?

    I found sometimes the Network Management application would conflict with other online application, and in other forum an user provided a pure driver package that can solve the problem.
    Here is the steps:
    First you can download MSI pure Killer LAN driver from this link:
    http://pan.baidu.com/s/1mgwZs96
    Please uninstall old Killer LAN driver package from control panel if you already have the driver in OS.
    Download and extract the RAR file to windows desktop.  Double click “dpinst.exe” to install the killer driver.
    It is normal if you see the message of “No device for update present” in the last step, that’ s because the driver package includes all kinds of killer LAN chip drivers, some don’t exist in your system.
    Just click “Finish” to complete the driver installation.  Restart system and you can start to enjoy the web surfing.
    And if you encounter problem when you uninstall Killer LAN driver, you can use Killer official uninstall utility to completely remove the driver.
    32 bit:
    https://www.qca.qualcomm.com/drivers/KillerCleaner_32bit.exe
    64 bit:
    https://www.qca.qualcomm.com/drivers/KillerCleaner_64bit.exe

    Just install the Killer LAN driver from MSI website, the manager is always installed with the driver.

  • Mock RFP for SUN network management tool, desperate 4 help, just need specs

    OK, I have a project that in essence is a mock Request for Proposal (RFP), I play as an intern, & our instructor roleplays the manager we need to convince. The different network management tools that were available were for example; HP Openview, Cisco Works, Sniffer....& I of course chose SunNet. We need to gather information on the tool, then turn around & design a relatively simple network from the specs that were given, & finally discuss how the management tool's abilities could benefit the (mock) company...power point presentation & all.
    Here it is from the homework sheet given to us...."These products will need to be useful in a 5000 node network that has four main locations that are primarily Ethernet. There is a legacy 100 nodes of Token Ring attached to a mainframe. Cisco or Foundry routers connect the Four main locations, with swiches employed. Other connections to these sites are done via DSL or ISDN. Additional considerations are wireless communications, VOIP & Content delivery systems.
    I know this is a lot & I'm not asking for someone to do all this for me, just simply provide any information you know about Enterprise management tools 2.0 or 3.0,or anything you may feel better suits my needs, as the links I have surfed about them give little to nothing about specifics that I need to make any argument. If you have any links send them...if you have anyting in hard copy I will pay for postage... I need to get this done & have little time as I go to school & work full time at Motorola (but only as a contractor), so I'm starting to choke & need help....any u can give is so very appreciated....& sorry to make this request a publishable novel here on the board, but thats what it is. Thanks again......Mark

    A good solution. Liked it very much. Can you please make it a technet blog for others.

  • ORACLE NETWORK MANAGER 기본적인 사용방법

    제품 : SQL*NET
    작성날짜 : 2002-04-12
    ORACLE NETWORK MANAGER 기본적인 사용방법
    ========================================
    I. TERMINOLOGY TO KNOW BEFORE USING THIS GUIDE
    A. community - a set of nodes that use the same network protocol.
    B. listener - a service that waits for incoming requests from client
    and server nodes.
    C. system identifier - (SID) name of the Oracle database instance,
    which is usually the same as the database name
    II. NETWORK CONFIGURATION STEPS
    A. Develop a pictorial representation of the network.
    B. Provide configuration data to Network Manager.
    C. Save the network configuration data and generate the configuration files.
    Step A. Develop a pictorial representation of the network.
    The sample network is a single protocol TCP/IP network with two
    databases. Each node has one listener.
    Step B. Provide configuration data to Network Manager.
    Network Manager requires information about the objects in the
    network before it creates the configuration files. There is an
    on-line walk-through which leads you through the creation of a
    network definition from the beginning (specification of definitions)
    to the end (generation of the configuration files). The walk-through
    provides information in pop-up boxes before each step. During the
    walk through, a series of object property sheets, which gather the
    data about network objects, appear with values which you may need
    to alter.
    ** Tasks **
    1. Launch Network Manager and click OK to store the network definition
    in a file. In the Open window click Cancel.
    2. Choose New from the File pull-down menu to start a new network
    definition. Use the on-line walk through and click OK in the Network
    Description dialog box.
    3. In the Community property sheet, enter TCP as the name of the
    community and choose TCP/IP from the protocol list box. Close the
    community property sheet by clicking OK.
    4. a. To define a node, enter the node name, TCP_node1, in the Node
    property sheet.
    b. Specify UNIX as the type of operating system in the drop-down
    list.
    c. Click on the community folder tab. Add TCP.WORLD to the node
    community list (Note:WORLD is a default suffix) and close the
    node property sheet by clicking OK.
    5. Click OK to close the Node property sheet. To create the node,
    TCP_node2, repeat step 4 and specify the type to be OS/2.
    6. Create a listener in the Listener property sheet, by entering
    TCP_listener1 as the name and choosing TCP_node1 in the node
    pull-down menu to indicate what node TCP_listener1 will listen to.
    Select the addresses folder tab and click Create. This defines the
    address of the listener. A service address property sheet appears
    with the address information as default values. Click OK.
    7. Click the database folder tab to define a database for the listener.
    In the Database property sheet, click Create to specify information
    about the Oracle database that will be included in the network.
    Enter TCP_DB1 as the name of the database. Click TCP_node1 as the
    node. Enter the SID: db1. In the Operating System Specific Details
    field, enter the directory path of the Oracle executables, i.e.
    /usr/oracle for Unix or c:\oraos2\ for OS/2. Click OK to close the
    Database property sheet.
    8. Click OK to close the listener property sheet. To create
    TCP_listener2, repeat steps 6-7 and substitute TCP_node2, TCP_DB2,
    and db2 for the node, database, and SID, respectively.
    Note: The on-line walk-through automatically validates the network configuration.
    Step C. Save the network configuration data and generate configuration files.
    1. Save the network definition.
    2. Click File System in the Export Network Definition dialog box and
    click OK. Choose the directory and click OK. The network definition
    is now complete and the configuration files are generated.
    III. OTHER INFORMATION
    A. About the configuration files
    If the network definition is saved to the file system,
    Network Manager creates two types of subdirectories within the
    directory chosen to store the network definition.
    These are: a node specific directory, which has the same name as the
    node and contact configuration files for the service the node provides,
    and a client profile directory, which has the same name as the client
    community and contains configuration files for each client.
    B. Hardware and Software Requirements
    PC with 6Mb disk, IBM or 100% compatible with an 80386 processor
    or higher one CD-ROM drive
    MS-DOS Version 5.0 or later and Windows 3.1

    Hi Steve,
    1) PL/SQL API for Network Analysis is coming in Oracle 10g Release 2.
    2) In Oracle 10g Release 1 it is a requirement to load the entire network. Loading the entire street network of new york city on my 1 Ghz laptop requires about 1 minute. In Oracle 10g Release 2 you can specify a predicate on the load network so you do not have to load the entire network.
    3) Source code for elocation will be available as an Oracle 10g Release 2 feature (I'm not sure what the "name" of the feature is, but it is a bundling of geocoding and routing, and when combined with MapViewer is a complete "elocation in a box" type of feature.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trying to use wireless N with iwlwifi & network manager

    Have all the h/w necessary to use wireless N:
    Intel Centrino-N 1030
    Linksys E3200 running Tomato 1.28
    Linksys E4200 running dd-wrt 21286
    Also updated everything today (pacman -Syu):
    >uname -a
    Linux hostname 3.12.9-2-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jan 31 10:22:54 CET 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    So, with either router set up with as an AP at 2.4GHz and N-Only (the centrino 1030 doesn't support 5GHz), and the module defaults loaded, I see odd behavior.  First, once connected to either AP, Network Manager still reports the connection to be at B/G.
    I checked the module config, and this part is relevant:
    >modinfo iwlwifi | grep 11n
    parm: 11n_disable:disable 11n functionality, bitmap: 1: full, 2: agg TX, 4: agg RX (uint)
    There's a lot of chatter on the forums about earlier kernels not supporting N w/ iwlwifi, and recommending to disable it with '11n_disable=1' in /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf.  So I tried explicitly enabling it, and assuming it's a binary value:
    >cat /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
    options iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
    After reloading the module(s) (and restarting wpa_supplicant & networkmanager), the thing I'm finding confusing is that I can see evidence of this change take effect:
    >cat /sys/module/iwlwifi/parameters/11n_disable
    0
    ...but it doesn't affect the output of modinfo (same as above), nor am I able to connect to either router at N (NM still reports B/G).  Also confused how it connects at all when the routers are set to N-Only?

    modinfo iwlwifi
    That is not supposed to change. It just shows you the parameters and their valid configurations.
    options iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
    >cat /sys/module/iwlwifi/parameters/11n_disable
    0
    Did you check that it was not already 0?
    ...but it doesn't affect the output of modinfo (same as above), nor am I able to connect to either router at N (NM still reports B/G).  Also confused how it connects at all when the routers are set to N-Only?
    If the card connects with the routers set to n only, then the card is capable of working with n. I usually check with nm-tools and look at the speed indicated.
    Here is the thing: Routers and cards sometimes negotiate a lower speed to prevent intereference with other devices. I usually 'get' N-speed only once I start to saturate the link.
