Network Management over Long Distances

I've got a question for you experienced OS X Server Admins out there, as well as for more experienced Network Professionals than myself.
As my family increasingly moves to Mac, my tech support requests from them have dropped sharply (Hallelujah!), though the complexity of them when they do come in has increased to the point that I can't really troubleshoot them over the phone anymore.  So as I look into getting a Mac Mini, the idea occured that I could use Mac OS X Server and Apple Remote Desktop to manage these remotely in the event of something going wrong, and lock down accounts so they aren't installing apps outside the App Store or Gatekeeper rules.  My problem is the physical distance between the Macs involved, and bandwidth usage:
1) The Macs I'd manage are located in several states with different family members, all over different connections of varying quality.  A constant VPN option isn't viable, though I need a way to make sure the Mac retains its Security Settings in the event of network connectivity being lost.
2) For when the Macs can/do connect to the Management Server, I'd need a way to make sure they aren't tunneling all traffic over VPN or some other secure connection to the server. In other words, their Mac would need to be able to send traffic from Netflix or Hulu over their local net connection, without the packets being piped over VPN to travel over my line; they need to do this while being reachable by said server.
See my dilemma? I want to manage them as if they're all internal devices, yet also make sure they make use of their own network connections and can remain independent rather than depend on VPN/my network connection.
Is there a feasible solution to this problem, or am I living in a dreamland here?

Having used TeamViewer at home for my Windows box, I've become unimpressed with how it refuses to let me easily disable the service, eats random amounts of CPU and Memory when not in use, and randomly spins up my hard disks to page data.  I'm also not thrilled with solutions like LogMeIn or Join.Me, nor do they solve the problem at hand.
Ultimately, I want Domain Admin-like control over these machines at all times, so I can do the routine maintenance, software upgrades, etc that are needed, that way the users (family) can go about their business without trouble.  In essence, I want to be the proverbial man behind the curtain.

  • Monitor vibration over long distance ( 300m)

    Hi everyone,
    Currently, I have a project to monitor vibration (16 IEPE channels) from a station that is more than 300m away from monitoring station. Looking at NI's products, I have a few options:
    1. Using ENET-9234:
    - Only 4 channel/module. I need to use 4 modules in total, and need to connect to a router.
    - Ethernet distance is limited at 100m. To reach 300m, I need to use at least 2 repeaters, which are not suitable for my project (off-shore environment)
    2. Using MXI-4 with Fiber Optic: PXI-8336
    - Maximum allowed distance is 200m.NI recommend to add another segment (i.e. add another PXI chassis in between) to extend range to 400m. Or use optical converter to convert between multi-mode fiber to single-mode fiber to extend range
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/C86BF63CC73C6721862575F2005A246D
    These recommendations are not suitable either due to harsh contion in the sea and difficult maintenance.
    3. Last option is acquire and process data at the site. Then transfer only processed data back to monitoring station over GPIB or RS-485.
    I would like to seek your advices on these options. Is there any way to avoid the repeaters in between?
    If you have any other ideas, please kindly let me know.
    Thank you very much!
    Have a great week ahead!

  • How to speed up SQL*Plus over long distances

    We are using Oracle 10g on Solaris 10.
    We have a customer that is located several thousand miles and is accessing our database using SQL*Plus as well as a custom java app we developed. Any query our customer runs against our database is as much as 500 times slower than run locally. I ran some test queries to see just how much slower it was.
    If I run this query:
    SELECT id FROM test_data WHERE ROWNUM < 300000;
    (The test_data table contains about 1,000,000 rows of sample data and 31 columns)
    It takes about 8 seconds on our intranet. It takes about 1 – 1.3 hours for our customer.
    I chose this query because I wanted a query that took at least a few seconds locally. Most of our customer’s queries return less rows, and are more complicated, but this query is easily to work with and shows what I think is the problem.
    I also made a java test app the runs the same query and it also takes the same amount of time.
    If I spool the results of this query to a file, it creates a 4MB file. If I ftp this file to the customer, it takes only 30 seconds. So it seems like just moving the data is not the slow part; although I am not sure this is a fair comparison.
    When I run a ping between the customer and me, the average latency is 250ms. It seems like this high latency may be slowing down the transfer of query results.
    I need to make the results return faster in both SQL*Plus and Java. It is not necessary to see any of the results until they have all been transferred.
    Is there a way to speed this up, like sending the results all at once instead of a piece at a time? Would incressing the size of the buffers or the size of the Session Data Unit have any effect?
    I am not greatly experianced with Oracle, am I misunderstanding the way it transfers data to the client?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Tom

    I have tried running a few qurys from the remote computer both with FLUSH ON and FLUSH OFF. The querys execute in the same amount of time either way.

  • Measuring temperature with RTDs over a long distance

    I have created an application using the FP-RTD-122 to take RTD mearurements from multiple locations in a plant. The measurments are correct when the RTD leads are connected directly to the module (about 6ft). However when we wire the RTDs in the plant to the module, the measuremtns are incorrect. For instance the temerature is 79C at one location, but shows as between -193C and 19C in Measurment and Automation Explorer. The distance is about 150 ft. I have found a reference in the internet that suggests using a temperature transmitter that converts the RTD signal to a 4 to 20 mA signal. Does anyone have any experience with measuring RTD over long distances? Do I really need a temperature transitter? If so, do I need to use the FP-AI-111 module instead?

    Nate,
    RTDs allow temperature measurement by reading the resistance of a sensor. This is normally done by exciting the sensor with a known current and measuring the resulting voltage. There are three general types of RTDs; two-wire, three-wire, and four-wire. Two wire RTDs are less accurate because the wire resistance is indistinguishable from the sensor resistance. Three wire RTDs use two wires on one leg (one to carry the known current and one to measure the voltage) allowing one portion of the wire resistance to be nullified. 4 Wire RTDs use two wires on each leg (one for the excitation current) to nullify the wire resistance. As a result, 4 Wire RTDs are the best ones to use for high precision or long distance measurements. To measure 4 Wire RTDs with FieldPoint, you will need to use the [c]FP-RTD-124 module instead of the [c]FP-RTD-122. With that said, I do not know how well 4 wire RTDs will do at 150 feet. 4-20 mA transmitters will easily handle 150 feet so they will probably be your best option. To measure the 4-20 mA signal, you can use the [c]FP-AI-100, [c]FP-AI-110, [c]FP-AI-111, [c]FP-AIO-600, or [c]FP-AIO-610 modules.

  • Long Distance Calling & Voice-over IP

    If I am running my blackberry thru my wireless router, can I make long distance calls for free? I heard that if you're in a foreign country and you hook into wifi that your calls are free as well...true?

    UMA = Unlimited Mobile Access.
    Yes, if you have UMA on your device, if you are in, say Germany, and you have a WiFi connection and UMA on the screen, when you make a call to anywhere, in this case pretend you are calling back to the USA.
    The call is made via WiFi/UMA, and the call is connected to a router for the WiFi network you are on, and then direct back to a Tmobile network center in the USA. Then the call is connected to your party via the normal phone network. Because the call now "originates" from the Tmobile service center in the USA, the call is a local in-nation call.
    Say you are in Germany, and you call Japan. Same story, the call orginiates from the Tmo service center in the US, and you are charged for a US --> Japan call, rather than Germany > Japan, which in most cases can be advantageous for your rates.

    I use WPA2 with network manager without a problem.  It should "just work", im not sure why you have issues, can you switch your router to a different security protocol to test?

  • [SOLVED] Network manager only works as root

    Hello everyone,
    I am brand new to arch and have been quite impressed over the past few days over all it has to offer.  Everything has been running quite smoothly and I am now in the process of setting up wireless.  I installed network manager and was able to connect to a wireless network as root.  For my regular user, however, I am running into some issues.  First one was that the nm-applet could not be opened in fluxbox.  I received the following error:
    ** (nm-applet:1576): WARNING **: <WARN> request_name(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service.
    Error: (9) Connection ":1.27" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file
    I "fixed" this by adding the following to /etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-applet.conf.  Original credit goes to the user in this thread (I only slightly modified his code): https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=63576
    <!-- hack -->
    <policy user="myusername">
    <allow own="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings"/>
    <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings"/>
    <deny send_interface="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerSetting.Secrets"/>
    </policy>
    <!-- end of hack -->
    Now the applet shows up for my regular user, the problem being that it doesn't connect to the wireless networks (only wired).  Whenever I try to connect to wireless, nothing happens (the symbol doesn't change in any way, i.e. the green spheres should start circling); I am still able to succesfully connect to wireless using root.  Does anyone know what the source of this issue may be?  Thank you very much in advance.

    Solved: Had to install consolekit and add "ck-launch-session" to my .xinitrc file when starting fluxbox.
    Edit: Please note that this also allowed me to remove the previous change to nm-applet.conf (no longer necessary)!

  • How to create a persistent network manager profile with openvpn?

    After installing networkmanager and openvpn everything works fine except that the networkmanager profile is not persistent and nm creates and selects a new profile with every boot. I followed Persistent configuration on boot using systemd which creates a persistent profile and cuts out the creation of a new profile, but when I build a openvpn connection it won't change the i.p. any longer. I've been searching for a week, read and learned a lot, but without a solution.
    My main question is what's creating and selecting a new network profile after booting? I've 2 fresh installations of Arch and Archbang on 2 pc's and with both the same issue/problem.

  • ASA upgrade to 8.4.3 now branh office cant make long distance calls

    We deployed 8.4.2 over the weekend and now a branch office that connects  to our core via ASA to ASA VPN tunnel is no longer able to make long  distance calls.  We are using Callmanager 4.1 and it is connected to our  core, the phones at the branch register fine and are abe to call  internal extensions, but when dialing 800 numbers and longdistance they  are not being directed to their PRI.

    Hello Stuart:
    Answers:
    1) If you have the command "NAMES" on and "NAT CONTROL" on the ASA will start creating a huge amount of object networks so they can perform the same thing that they did on 8.2 . So before doing the upgrade remove the names and the nat control feature
    no names
    no nat-control
    2) Twice nat or as you said (nat command outside of an object network) it is listed on the command reference and actually it has the highest priority when the ASA checks the NAT rules. So do NOT delete them as they are more than fine.
         A) Twice NAT
         B) Auto nat
         C) After-Auto nat
    3) That is correct but if they are from the NAT 0 with acl from 8.2 versions should be:
         nat (inside,outside) source static A A destination static B B
    4) You are right, you do not need to use a NAT 0 with ACL in order to configure the VPN, instead you need a TWICE nat as I configured on answer 3.
    Any other question..Sure.. Just remember to rate all of the answers.

  • Ghost wireless network in network manager

    Hello everyone, I've been having a weird issue on my laptop recently; it may have coincided with the recent network manager upgrade, but I'm not sure, I haven't been in classes this month, so I haven't used wireless much. Anyways, now, when ever wireless is enabled, I see a hidden network all the time. At first I thought it might be a new network on the block, but no, there's no actual signal tied to it. I've tried searching here and on google, but sifting through the results proved to be very difficult because it brought up people having problems trying to connect to a hidden network.
    Any thoughts on the issue would be most appropriated.

    Hi Stephen,
    Of course without doing a Site Survey these recommendations are purely speculative :) The choice of Antenna type would likely be to go with a Directional for this type of coverage.
    With the directional antennas, you can divert the RF energy in a particular direction to farther distances. Therefore, you can cover long ranges, but the effective beamwidth decreases. This type of antenna is helpful in near LOS coverage, such as covering hallways, long corridors, isle structures with spaces in between, etc. However, as the angular coverage is less, you cannot cover large areas. This is a disadvantage for general indoor coverage because you would like to cover a wider angular area around the AP.
    Antenna arrays should face in the direction where the coverage is desired, which can sometimes make mounting a challenge.
    From this excellent doc;
    Omni Antenna vs. Directional Antenna

  • BB Desktop Manager no longer works with Mac Maverick - Need Help Urgently

    I have been a loyal Blackberry user since the Government of Canada officially began using these cell phones. I feel, however, abandoned by Blackberry (they obviously don't believe that it is easier to retain an existing customer than acquire a new one). I'm using a Blackberry Bold (9900) with a Macbook Pro. Everything was fine until I upgraded my Mac operating system to Maverick; my Blackberry Desktop Manager no longer works, so I cannot sync the content (contacts, calendar) of my phone with my Mac, but that's not the worst of it.
    I recently had a momentary lapse and exceeded the 10 password attempts to access my phone... this accidentally wiped my phone clean... and because Desktop Manager does not work with Mac, I do not have a way to recover my data. Rogers was of no help and had Blackberry updated its desktop software months ago, as it should have, this issue would have been moot. I do not know how or why, but I was able to recover most of my data, but I'm not sure just how up-to-date tha data is and am still going through it, but I'm having issues with some functionality.
    I'm in the US for several months and have suspended my Canadian services. Prior to the wipe, I was able to use wifi on my phone to send and receive emails with no problem.  After the wipe, I can't send emails or bbms.  I checked my blackberry internet service and all email accounts are good to go. BBMs are another issue.  I need help.  Suggestions please.

    Apple has ceased synchronization with Mavericks. The issue lies with Apple, not with the desktop software. To mitigate the lack of sync capabilities in Mavericks you can sync your contacts and calender on your Mac with the usual suspects (Yahoo, Google). Create a backup (archive) for Contacts and Calender on your Mac first, then create one of those email accouonts that allow syncing. On your 9900 and with BlackBerry provisioning enabled create the new or existing email account. See which email accounts can sync with BB, I know Yahoo is working fine. For Yahoo, get the Yahoo Calender sync (a few bucks one-off payment required), Contacts sync works off the shelf within BB. If you reset the 9900 you should be able to restore all data with BB DTM. Please note that emails you received during the 9900 reset and the date of restore will not be available on the device. You will still not be able to sync contacts/calender over BB DTM. I hope that helps.

  • [SOLVED] Network Manager cannot connect to wifi after suspend

    Hi,
    There appears to be similar threads recently, but they relate to no wifi at all. I did some updates today, and now if I suspend or hibernate, network manager cannot reconnect to my wifi. It will (after a while) ask me to authenticate, but still fails. Nothing works except a reboot where it connects without issue.
    It was fine yesterday, has only started today. Here is my pacman log for today's updates:

    For those using the arch repo kernel the next release will solve this issue. So I suggest waiting for this (no more than a few days) and use the LTS kernel in the meantime (or using a fixed ath9k module if already built).
    Thanks for that heiko. I thought that would be the case, hence I just waited.
    Will mark this as solved.
    Cheers.

  • Connman - network manager

    Hello,
    I am using E17 windows manager and would like to use connman network manager, but unfortunately it does not work for me. Has anybody some tips?
    PS: I do have working networkamanger (disabled now) and did had wicd (in previous install).
    System boots without any errors (although it is just a bit longer in udev section, but still no errors), I can load connman module, but it is always in offline mode.
    All other networking managers are disabled. My rc.conf has these daemons:
    syslog-ng dbus !networkmanager crond connmand iptables slim
    Recently discovered that there is connman applet, which after adding to start-up starts, takes ones icon place (white) and disappears after few second.
    I tried install it from yaourt simple connman, connman git, connman-gnome-git ... they all had some results, susses-full install, but after reboot there are no internet.

    I switched to wicd, so this isn't an issue anymore, I guess... still not sure what was going wrong, though.
