Network speed test under linux?

I've been experimenting with jumbo frames on my gigalan network.  Basically, I set the mtu size on the two test machine, then transfer some files to and from them measuring the throughput.  Is there a program to test throughput between two machines on a network that doesn't involve the user literally copying files?

I have used something in the past when I was also looking at jumbo frames until I realised my NIC doesn't support them. I think it was called lperf. IT was quite interesting to see the difference between TCP and UDP. There are a bunch of utilities for checking network throughput listed here.

  • Standard local network speed test?

I recently setup up a dual-band (dedicated n, dedicated g) wireless network, and I think I am having some issues with throughput (qualitative observation). So I started trying to find a good metric for performance of the wireless systems. Note, I am talking here about the local wireless (Airport devices between home computers), not the connected internet speed (cable, DSL, fiber).
I see a lot of people copying files and timing the transfer. Is this the best there is? From what I've read, ping isn't such a good metric for network throughput. You can watch the kb/s transfer report on copy, but that isn't exactly stable or indicative of general performance. Any other tools, programs, methods, etc.? Or should I just be timing file transfers?
    Thanks!

Yes, I know how to handle and suppress errors in LabView. I was mainly looking for a good example on a network speed test.
The test we have uses was written by one of our software guys, it uses two computers in a client-server arrangement and stops and displays an error message when the client computer loses connection to the server. Regardless of the reasoning I have given the programmer refuses to change it because he wrote the test for him and that's how he wants it.
I want a program that can use one computer with two network cards.
It will send a data stream out one NIC, through the UUT, and back in the other NIC.
Where it Will be checked for errors and dropped packets, and sent back through the UUT.
A continuous throughput speed measurment will also be logged along with errors, dropped packets, and retries.
I have never used any of the LV networking, tcp, etc  VI's and was hoping someone had done this before because I do not have time to start from scratch.

  • Network speed test in jsp

I would like to know which APIs are necessary to develop a network speed tester in jsp or which method to do this, knowing about which APIs it's necessary, I will study them. Here is a example of a network speed tester that I'm trying to do
    Examples:
    http://www.coiinc.com/speedtest/initialmeter.php
    http://www.pcativo.com.br/testes.asp?teste_tipo=velocidade
    http://www.navegante.com.br/medidor/initialmeter.php
    http://medidor.interair.com.br/
    http://www.rjnet.com.br/velocimetro/index2.htm

    Sir,
For at least a couple of these options it appears that the test is actually based on JavaScript.
What seems to happen is that at the beginning of the page there is a JavaScript variable that is set with the time.
Then there is a big amount of some sort of data. Which I would guess has been measured to be X big. Let's say 1 MB.
Finally there is another bit of Javascript which again takes the time and then finds out the difference and from that one can sort of conclude the time difference.
But I am not convinced this will always work perfectly but who knows... anyway your use of JSP wouldn't preclude you from just basically copying what these others are doing.
    Sincerely,
    Slappy

  • Network speed test throughput monitor

I am looking for a quick and dirty speed test to continously monitor the bidirectional throughput of a transponder and POE device while they are undergoing environmental testing.
Would be nice if it could log throughput, dropped packets, and bit error rates between two computers and did not crash when a fault causes one end to stop responding like the C program we have now.
Our C programmer looks at us like we are insane when we ask him to not stop display an errror if the client or server times out.

  • DR8-A (150D) Write speed problems under linux

    Hi all,
I would appreciate a response from MSI , perhaps a modification to the next fimware release.
Linux applications have difficulty changing the DVD +-R write speed due to an alleged incorrect response from the DR8-A firmware.  See example, from growisofs author; http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2004/05/msg00192.html

So-far I have been unable to select a speed for the unit other than the maximum speed of the media. Apparently, when the burning program asks for the current writer speed setting, the media speed  is returned.
While I am impressed with the advertised versatility of the unit, i am disappointed in the number of "hangups" when unsuitable media is inserted. The only way to return the unit to service is to completely turn off the power, a re-start is insufficient. (Linux or Windows)
    Thanks

    Post your computer's specification.
And what kind of Linux are u using, i.e. what OS? Also try other burning software in Linux.
Note: I know how to use Linux myself.

  • How to test network speed

How do I test the speed of my network to determine if Time Capsule or my Internet provider is behind a real slowdown in my internet access. I ran the java test at DSLReports.com and got the following results:
Compared to the average of 971 tests from comcast.net: download is 98% worse, upload is 98% worse.
I'm unsure where to look or what to look for in trying to find a cause for the problem but wanted to at least try and make a stab at finding out before I called Comcast.

You could try connecting a computer directly to your broadband modem and run the test again.  That would remove the Time Capsule from the configuration.  You may need to reset the modem to convince it to connect to a "new" device.
Are you connecting to the Time Capsule via Ethernet or Wi-Fi?  If by Wi-Fi, the quality of your Wi-Fi connection could have a big affect on the network speed.  In that case, use the advice in the second message of this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that your Mac sees:

  • Network speed affected by large file copy operations. Also, why intermittent network outages?

    Hi
I have a couple of issues on our company network.
The first is thate a single large file copy imapcts the entire network and dramatically reduces network speed and the second is that there are periodic outages where file open/close/save operations may appear to hang, and also where programs that rely on
network connectivity e.g. email, appear to hang. It is as though the PC loses it's connection to the network, but the status of the network icon does not change. For the second issue if we wait the program will respond but the wait period can be up to 1min.
The downside of this is that this affects Access databases on our server so that when an 'outage' occurs the Access client cannot recover and hangs permamnently.
We have a Windows Active Directory domain that comprises Windows 2003 R2 (soon to be decommissioned), Windows Server 2008 Standard and Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard domain controllers. There are two member servers: A file server running Windows 2008 Storage
Server and a remote access server (which also runs WSUS) running Windows Server 2012 Standard. The clients comprise about 35 Win7 PC's and 1 Vista PC.
When I copy or move a large file from the 2008 Storage Server to my Win7 client other staff experience massive slowdowns when accessing the network. Recently I was moving several files from the Storage Server to my local drive. The files comprised pairs
(e.g. folo76t5.pmm and folo76t5.pmi), one of which is less than 1MB and the other varies between 1.5 - 1.9GB. I was moving two files at a time so the total file size for each operation was just under 2GB.
While the file move operation was taking place a colleague was trying to open a 36k Excel file. After waiting 3mins he asked me for help. I did some tests and noticed that when I was not copying large files he could open the Excel file immediately. When
I started copying more data from the Storage Server to my local drive it took several minutes before his PC could open the Excel file.
I also noticed on my Win7 client that our email client (Pegasus Mail), which was the only application I had open at the time would hang when the move operation was started and it would take at least a minute for it to start responding.
Ordinarlily we work with many files
Anyone have any suggestions, please? This is something that is affecting all clients. I can't carry out file maintenance on large files during normal work hours if network speed is going to be so badly impacted.
I'm still working on the intermittent network outages (the second issue), but if anyone has any suggestions about what may be causing this I would be grateful if you could share them.
    Thanks

What have you checked for resource usage during one of these copies of a large file?
At a minimum I would check Task Manager>Resource Monitor.  In particular check the disk and network usage.  Also, look at RAM and CPU while the copy is taking place.
What RAID level is there on the file server?
There are many possible areas that could be causing your problem(s).  And it could be more than one thing.  Start by checking these things.  And go from there.
    Hi, JohnB352
Thanks for the suggestions. I have monitored the server and can see that the memory is nearly maxed out with a lot of hard faults (varies between several hundred to several thousand), recorded during normal usage. The Disk and CPU seem normal.
I'm going to replace the RAM and double it up to 12GB.
Thanks! This may help with some other issues we are having. I'll post back after it has been done.
    [Edit]
Forgot to mention: there are 6 drives in the server. 2 for the OS (Mirrored RAID 1) and 4 for the data (Striped RAID 5).

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6 has downgraded networking speed

I have 3 computers on my 100% wired Gigabit network at home. All 3 computers are connected to the same router.
1 is a linux machine, 1 is a Macbook (C2D 2.4GHz 4MB RAM) running Leopard 10.5.8, and 1 is my iMac (C2D 2.4GHz 4MB RAM) running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. Both iMac and Macbook have identical specs and RAM, only difference is one is running 10.5.8 and one is running 10.6.1.
Prior to upgrading my iMac to SL, I'd consistently get between 10-20Mbps download result using dslreport.com speedtests. I'm on Comcast. Now after upgrading to SL on the iMac, I can only achieve around 2.5Mbps maximum speed test results. I performed this test 5x over several days to make sure there wasn't some coincidental anomaly. As a test I performed the same speed test on the Macbook and it indeed hit above 15Mbps speed result consistently 5x in a row and over several days. My linux machine also achieves the same 15+Mbps speed result.
I've tried tweaking the iMac's SL network settings, but nothing helps. What has happened in SL to degrade network throughput? I can clearly and consistently reproduce this issue.

Aha! I've found the problem. Its the Flash 8 speed test that is the problem on SL. When performing the same speed test using the Java speed test, I achieve the 15+Mbps download speeds.
    Flash 8 speedtest
    Sun Java plugin speedtest
I've done the test 5 times in a row and I get the same results form each respective speedtest type.
So the problem is what is wrong with Flash on Snow Leopard?

  • Poor SSD disk IO speed in Oracle Linux 6.3 (Windows migration)

    Hello,
I am trying to migrate from Windows to Oracle Linux, but I'm seeing very poor disk IO speeds. It's probably a tuning thing, but I'm relatively new to Oracle Linux and could use some detailed advice.
I took one physical server and migrated it from Windows 2008R2 to Oracle Linux 6.3 while maintaing the same Oracle version (11.2.0.3 Enterprise with ASM) and the same hardware (quad CPU 48 core HP DL585 G7 with 128GB RAM, 7 LSI 9200-8e HBAs, 28 Samsung SSD Drives). Disk IO performance, as measured using Oracle IO Calibration, was ~7,800MB/Second and 440K IOPS under windows but fell to ~2,400MB/Second and 250K IOPS under Linux.
Oracle Linux and the DB were installed using default values. The Oracle tools seem to have done a great job setting all of the obvious IO tuning parameters like the scheduler, but I figure that there are other important IO-related OS or DB parameters and that I have failed to configure the system properly.
My goal for the migration is sequential read IO speed and I would have bet money that Linux would provide better performance than Windows. I still think that it should. What basic IO tuning should I do for Oracle Linux using ASM and SSD drives?
    Thank you!
    Some details:
Oracle DB 11.2.0.3 enterprise installed via the GUI with the "Data Warehousing" template
ASM - single disk group, 28 SSD disks, AU=4MB
Oracle memory: Automatic memory management, 64GB allocated
    Non-default Oracle params: filesystemio_options=setall, disk_asynch_io=true
    Edited by: 975524 on Dec 7, 2012 8:56 AM

Thanks "dude" for the advice. Unfortunately, I am still seeing low IO speeds.
The default scheduler for OEL 6.3 with the DB pre-install package is deadline, which seemed like a far better choice than CFS. Based on your advice, I tried noop this morning and got the same results. I also tested with and without hugepages and saw only a small difference - at least in IO speed - I did not test overall DB performance. Lastly, I understand the /dev/shm issue, but even with the default configuration I'm getting 64MB allocated to Oracle, which is far more than is needed to test sequential IO - in fact I can get better results by using less RAM.
To answer your questions, I am testing using Oracle IO Calibration, which is an IO testing feature of the Oracle DB that is similar to the standalone Oracle Orion tool. I also performed a few tests using IOMeter, but found that the Linux version of that product was not giving me consistent data. The overall trend was the same however - IO on the Linux version far lower than the same hardware running Windows. The system is functioning very well, so I assume that everything has been installed correctly, but I do not think that it was installed optimally - thus my cry for help.
I am so surprised that Linux is showing slow IO!

  • InetAddress.getHostName under Linux

    Hello,
anyone here know why InetAddress.getHostName sometimes returns <Computer-Name> only and sometimes <Computer-Name>.<Domain-Name>? I just migrated a java project to linux, and on my computer InetAddress.getHostName returns <Computer-Name>.<Domain-Name>. A colleague of mine is already running under Linux and he gets <Computer-Name>. We both have the same Domain-Name, and we have compared network settings and haven't found any differences.
I have tried to google, but I haven't found anything. Any know the reason for this behaviour?

After juggling around a bit with the network settings, turning IPv6 on and off, switching between static IP and DHCP (computer-name and domain name remained untouched), the InetAddress.getHostName suddenly returned <computer-name> only. I tried to retrace my configuration changes, and tested InetAddress.getHostName and it only returned <computer-name> without the <domain-name> extension. Did I miss something? Do anyone know when InetAddress.getHostName returns <computer-name> and when it returns <computer-name>.<domain-name>?

  • Speed Tester refuses connection

For about the last three or four days when I try and run the speed tester it goes through the usual motions, asks for my phone number, then BThomehub etc,
appears to run the test but the final message is connection refused.
    Anyone know what's going on?
    George
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

i have recently had this. on my one computer, it just hung for over 30 mins, on the other, it came up with an error.
on checking the speed on other services, it is because my speed has droped to under 349kb - the 5th reduction in as many days - i should be on 4mb to 7mb, with an upto 20mb connection.
Bt say it is because btwholesale are doing work on the lines, for infinity, and they will/cannot do further investigations until they have finished.
i am in the wednesbury area, with a 0121 dialing code.
n.b. at this 'speed', my wireless network is not working.
welcome to the world of last wednesday week.
there's now't wrong with 2 cans and a piece of string. at certain times, it is often faster.

  • Cool'n'Quiet under Linux: Fan won't spin down

    Hi,
    first off my configuration:
    MSI K8T Neo
Athlon 64 3000+ (Newcastle) with packaged AMD fan
    Linux 2.6.8-gentoo-r3 (Gentoo)
The powernow-k8 module works for me and I am able to clock the cpu to 1000 MHz. The problem is that the fan won't slow down, or at least not as far as under Windows. Under Windows I usually have around 3000 or less rpm, under Linux it's *at least* 4000 (and I hear the difference). Are there any BIOS settings I need to change so that the fan slows down? Or is it even possible under Linux? The temperature is 32 C right now which is quite low, so the fan should slow down.
    Thanks in advance.

guys, how is fan speed regulated? apply a certain voltage depending on the temperature of the CPU. how so? how does it know how hot your cpu can get / how hot it is supposed to get (because it differs alot as far as i know)
i think the ansewr to this question will help the fan speed problem.
    Quote
Point 2: Idling at 1000Mhz with C'n'Q enabled in core center the fan speed oscillates between 2860 & 3180 while the CPU temp stays pretty constant at 45C, case temp is 31C.
the temperature sensor (in my case at least) gets rather large jumps when my proc goes from 990mhz to 2.2k. could it just be that the fan speed is changing accordingly? just the act of right clicking system to check properties moves it to 1.75ghz for a second.
edit: one more thing, try running prime95 with fan at 2k rpm and 3k rpm. Perhaps the temps dont change because you have enough airflow w/ both settings to take away the heat from 1000mhz, whereas if it was getting hotter the fan speed would affect temps? (like you said) BUT, in response to "So why on earth is core center trying to drive the fan at top revs when obviously minimum revs idoes just as good a job (and is much quieter!)???" the thing is, the computer doesent test a low rpm and realize that its doing the same job, its just programmed to run w/ certain variables =P ie, set variables. it doesent get to reason it out and feel it is obvious that the same rpms are cooling it to 45c =P
unless its programmed to do that. . .

  • ARIAL FONT IN REPORTS(WINDOWS), NOT SHOWN CORRECTLY UNDER LINUX

Our Reports are developed under Windows (Report Builder 9.0.4.0.33 and Windows 2000/Windows XP) and generated under Linux (IAS 10.1.2.0.2 with Red Hat Advanced Server). The Report Output is a PDF, that will be downloaded by the user with WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT. This works fine, but fonts are not shown correctly in the PDF, especially ARIAL, which is the font we use.
I have run the Fontsolution Configuration Script from Metalink, but we still have a problem.
When you look at the font.pdf, wich is the testreport from fontsolutions, some sizes and styles of Arial are printed correctly others not.
Arial 8 is ok, but Arial 10 and Arial 12 are something like Times New Roman.
Arial 12 Bolded is correct, but Arial 12 italic and Arial 12 bold italic are also not
    the Arial Font.
How can we correct this problem?

    # <Face>.<Size>.<Style>.<Weight>.<Width>.<CharSet>
    # The <Face> must be the name (string/identifier) of a font face. The
    # <Style>, <Weight>, <Width>, and <CharSet> may either be a numeric
    # value or a predefined identifier/string. For example, both US7ASCII
    # and 1 are valid <CharSet> values, and refer to the same character set.
    # The <Size> dimension must be an explicit size, in points.

    # Styles may be combined; you can use plus ("+") to delimit parts of a
    # style. For example,
    # Arial..Italic+Overstrike = Helvetica.12.Italic.Bold
    # are equivalent, and either one will map any Arial that has both Italic
    # and Overstrike styles to a 12-point, bold, italic Helvetica font.
    # All strings are case-insensitive in mapping. Font faces are likely to
    # be case-sensitive on lookup, depending on the platform and surface, so
    # care should be taken with names used on the right-hand side; but they
    # will be mapped case-insensitively.
    # See your platform documentation for a list of all supported character
    # sets, and available fonts.
    # BUGS:
    # o Should accept a RHS ratio (e.g., "Helv = Arial.2/3").

    # NOTES ON PRECEDENCE OF PDF SECTIONS:
    # If you have entries for a same font in many PDF sections, then Font
    # Aliasing entry will take precedence over Font Embedding entry. Entries
    # in Font Embedding will take precedence over the entries in Font Subsetting
    # section.
    # Generic entries for a font must follow more specific entries for the same
    # font. For instance, if you want to subset helvetica Plain, helvetica Bold,
    # helvetica Italic and helvetica Bold-Italic fonts, your entries must be:
    # [ PDF:Subset ]
    # helvetica..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
    # helvetica...Bold.. = "Arialb.ttf"
    # helvetica..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
    # helvetica..... = "Arial.ttf"
    # If helvetica..... entry appears in the top of the list, all the styles of
    # helvetica font in the layout will be subset as helvetica Plain font.
    uiprint.txt
    # This is the printer configuration file.
    # The format for entries in this file is:
    # <OSName>:<Type>:<Version>:<Long Name>:<Description File>:
    # The first field is the name of the printer. It is the name you give
    # to lpq.
    # The second field is the type of driver to be used for the printer.
    # Currently, "PostScript" and "ASCII" are the only types of driver for
    # printers supported for now. But in future we may be supporting
    # drivers for other printer types.
    # The third field is the version of the type of printer driver. It's 1
    # or 2 for all PostScript printers; or 1 for ASCII printers.
    # The fourth field is a long description of the printer. This will be
    # presented to the user in the "Choose Printer" dialog window.
    # The fifth field is the printer description file to be used. For
    # PostScript printers it is the PPD file of the printer. (This field is
    # currently unused for ASCII printers.)
    # You can use default.ppd for the description file if you don't have a
    # PPD file for the printer, but it's best to use the correct PPD file
    # for the printer.
    # You must fill in at least the first two fields (printer name and
    # type). If the version is empty, it defaults to "1"; if the long name
    # or description are empty, they will default to empty strings. A
    # version of 1 or an empty long name is fine, but, for PostScript
    # printers, you must fill in the description file name.
    # You don't have to update this file to use any printer. The printer
    # chooser interface let's you select a printer and driver at run time,
    # as well as associate a printer description file to the printer. You
    # should list all printers accessible to users here, however, to
    # simplify selecting a printer.
    # The first entry in this file will be used as the default printer, if
    # no printer was selected in the operating system. (For Unix, the
    # following environment variables will be used in turn to get the
    # default printer's name:
    # TK2_PRINTER
    # ORACLE_PRINTER
    # PRINTER
    # For other platforms, see the Installation and User's Guide for your OS
    # for information on setting the default printer.)
    # WARNING: Do not define multiple entries for the same printer by the
    # same name. Selecting a printer with multiple entries will always result
    # in the first entry being selected. Instead, see if your OS allows you
    # to create an alias for the printer, and use an alias for the second type.

If you want to make platform independent use of fonts, you have to use the family, such as sans serif.
Arial is owned by monotype (http://monotype.com/). You have to contact them if you wish to redistribute it with your application. They also might have a suitable version that renders nicely under linux.

  • I am desperate!! slow choppy network speeds (not actual inability to cnnct)

I have a 13" macbook air that has the following problem: I can connect to wifi networks (including at home WPA and also tried WPA2 settings) but even though I may get proper speed at first, I soon lose that and it becomes much slower and choppy (if I open activity monitor I can see the speed going up and down like crazy...). My internet speed at home is 12mpbs set by my provider. When I perform speed tests (vis speedtest.net or downloading files from other speed test sites) on my windows PC that is also on this network I get the full download speed. However with this MAC while I initially did get the full speed, it is now down to an average of 3-5mbps and the activity monitor, again, shows choppy behavior so it will be at 8 then at zero almost and then up and down again but never near the full speed. I tried to connect to other networks and I have the same problem - once this happens it stays. I tried removing the airport connection in network preferences and adding it again it does not help.
I TALKED TO APPLE AND HAD MY COMPUTER TESTED BY THEM - they didn't find any hardware issues (they said it was fine - but it isn't) but they still replaced the airport hardware in the computer - both the chip and the antenna (which meant replacing the entire screen). I brought the computer home, ran a speed test and everything was fine. I thought GREAT but then something happened and the problem returned. What I did (which I think was unrelated) was connect via SMB to a PC at home and I tried to stream a movie file. I noticed it kept 'pausing' so I opened up activity monitor again and to my HORROR I saw the choppy wave with network speed very inconsistent going up and down like crazy... I tried connecting to my slingox using the sling web access after disconnecting from my home PC but got partial speed and lots of drops too. I tried the speed test again multiple times, nothing seems to work.
SO I don't know what to do at this point. I have 10.6.6 running. I heard something about a firmware update but I am new to mac so not sure how to even do that or what else I can do to solve this problem or what is causing it. BTW - logging in now from the guest account still does not fix the issues and they remain the same.
I am desperately looking for help!!
    Thanks a lot!

Have you been able to reproduce your problems on other wireless networks other than at your house? It appears you are saying that this occurs on all wireless, but I'm not sure from your comment. If it's only at home, it would appear to be a compatibility issue between your wireless access point and the Macbook Air, which isn't uncommon. Sometimes a firmware upgrade to the access point can fix it, sometimes it might require switching to a different brand of access point. It would be great if you could borrow (or buy and return) a different access point/router to test. An Apple airport would be the best to use of course. Not the easiest solution, but lets you help rule out a hardware issue with your air.
My isp provides 15mbps but my wireless devices such as my iphone, ipad, laptop usually only get 6.5-8 mbps when testing speeds to the internet. I don't expect it to be as good as the wired due to interference, signal, etc. I don't get the choppy behavior however. Firware updates from Apple will appear in the same manner as standard software updates. If there is one available for your system it should appear when you check for software updates. That being said, I believe you can also manually download them from the Apple site.
