Network working weird

Hello everyone.
I'm new in Arch, and I have a problem with my network. Yesterday I install Arch on my laptop, using Gnome as the desktop enviroment. I notice that I dont have the network managing icon on the bar, so I install it, activate NetworkManager and reboot. The nm-applet show the networks, but when i try to conect to any network he don't do it. I try with wicd, but he neither conect to any network. I try to connect to my wifi-menu and it works. Something weird is that with NetworkManager i can't connect the laptop to the internet via ethernet, like with the wifi.
I would like to use NetworkManager insthead of wifi-menu. How can I make NetworkManager works correctly? I think that I'm loading something that I don't have to load, but I don't know what.
Thanks for your answers.

Welcome to the forums.
You can actually use dhcpcd to assign a static address too with the "-S" option.
My first guess for your error would be that the interface is not "eth0" (though the error message seems odd for that, yes).
Whats the output when you bring the connection up manually (description right above the wiki .service file you link)?

  • Question about how wireless networks work

    Hello,
This is more of a general question rather than one that is specific to the airport. I have a network with an Airport Express with wireless n, a Macbook Pro with a wireless n card, and a printer that has a wireless g card. Someone told me that because I have a wireless g device on my network that I will never get wireless n speeds even when using my computer to do things besides printing because the network is only as fast as its slowest device. Based on this, if there is a computer on my network that has a wireless g card then everyone on the network can only get wireless g speeds even if the others have wireless n cards.
It was always my understanding that I could not get n speeds when using the printer but I thought that if I were using my computer to connect to the internet, download, upload, etc. (things that have nothing to do with printing and don't require the printer) then I should be able to get wireless n speeds.
I was wondering if someone could explain how wireless networks work. Thanks in advance.

The simple answer is that having 802.11g (i.e. 54 Mbit/s) clients on an 802.11n network will NOT slow down the 802.11n clients.
However, 802.11g works only in the 2.4 GHz band, whereas 802.11n also works in the 5 GHz band, which is potentially much faster. So if you require compatibility with g devices on an AirPort Express, it decreases the potential maximum speed of the n devices, because you have to operate in the 2.4 GHz band. But this slowdown occurs whether or not g devices are actually connected to the network.

  • The wi-fi button on my iPad 2 is not functioning.  I have tried resetting the network, worked for 5 minutes. Am not able to connect to internet to reset to factory.  What else can I do?

The wi-fi button on my iPad 2 is not functioning.  I have tried resetting the network, worked for 5 minutes. Am not able to connect to internet to reset to factory.  What else can I do?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Extend a network worked fine for 2 years, now it doesn't

Sorry I'm not at home so I've gotta go off bad memory...
My setup has worked fine for a number of years.  A non-simultaneous dual band Extreme is the main base station.  I have a Express ethernet-ed to the network working without issue.  There's also a newer Extreme farther away that has been wirelessly extending the network without too much issue until now.  Airport Utility pops up now saying the newer Extreme is unable to extend.  All I attempt to do is restart because all my settings seem to have been fine.  Original base set to create with extend checked, and the newer Extreme set to extend with the same ssid, password etc.
So what's changed if I haven't changed anything?  Newer versions of something?
    Thanks for any input.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

I got my new iPhone 5 Last Friday. However I can not activate facetime on the new iPhone 5. All other function work well.
I used my apple ID and always get the below message " Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again".
My network work well. I can access internet, apple store with no issue via wi-fi or AT&T 4G. No password issue as I can use the same apple ID register other access and apple store.
I noticed that many users are complaining the facetime after upgrading to iOS6. Not sure if this is the reason?
Any one here can help on this?
    Thanks

Facetime is accessed through Contacts or Messages. The only place you will find anything else in is Settings, where you would activate it. There is no stand alone app for Facetime like on the iPod or iPad.

If I remember right there "may" be a problem if you have a proxie settings enabled.
System Preferences/ Network/ Advanced/ Proxies. Can't remember which one or if it was an issue in 10.7 or 10.6. Just make sure their all unchecked and try again.
You might try a search in these forums for more information. Different fix's for different issue's.

  • Question on how networking works with new Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I have a question about how networking works with my new Macbook Pro. This is my first laptop so am new to mobile computing. I am about to configure it to replace my desktop which uses a wired DSL connection. Once I have my Macbook Pro configured to run off the DSL modem, what happens when I take this computer to a location that has ethernet? Will just plugging in the ethernet cable be enough to get on line? Or is there further configuration work that needs to be done?
I used a Windows laptop from work and all I had to do was plug it in to a hotel ethernet cable to get on line. However, this laptop was never configured to run on my DSL network so I am not certain if that makes things more complicated.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi
Your MacBook Pro should just work when plugged into an ethernet connection.
Just check something, Open Network Preferences, you can select it from the Airport icon in the menu bar.
In the left-hand pane click on Ethernet and just check that it is set to configure using DHCP in the right-hand pane, that's it.
So when you plug in the ethernet cable it will ask the router for an IP address and off you go.
I assume that any system you plug into will use DHCP rather than static IP addresses. If it is a static IP address, you will need to manually configure the ethernet settings by inputting the IP address and subnet mask info plus DNS servers.
Usually it is done with DHCP and you don't have to do a thing and likewise your home DSL is DHCP?
If not then you will have to change your settings, make a 'Hotel' setting which you can use when in hotels and keep your 'Home' set-up for when you are at home. In the pull down menu select Edit Locations to add new ones.

Hmm, let's ensure this is working as it should be! So what phone should be active on your account? Did you switch the devices online or how to did you activate the 5s? Please share details.

I have not done a factory reset, I was trying to find out if I had some setting configured wrong first.  I figured I'd just make things worse if went through a reset!

AP Express status light flashing amber for no apparent reason, network works fine, any ideas?

It flashes amber when there is some kind of conflict. If the internet is working but the amber light bothers you, airport utility ahould tell you why your airport is reporting a problem.
If airport utility thinks your airport is normal and the amber light bothers you, do a hard reset on the device

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!
